Questions about Tiger
I've been running Tiger for some time on my PowerBook 17 and have a few questions for people that are also running it. First, I have the iChat menu extra. Under Panther, when I would be available, the menu extra would display my available buddies, would play sounds when someone would become available or unavailable. Now, under Tiger, I need to keep iChat (the application) running if I want to get the same feedback. Checking in Activity Monitor shows me that a process called iChatAgent is not responding. Has anybody else noticed this? Another annoying thing I did notice is when I have a Stuffit archive with the '.sit' extension. I have Stuffit Deluxe installed with the Stuffit Archive Via Rename running. Under Panther, if I would delete the extension, Stuffit would expand the archive. Now, under Tiger, when I delete the extension, nothing happens. If I do an info on the archive file, I see that the extension is hidden in the name section of the info window. If I uncheck the Hide extension checkbox in the info window, the extension comes back in the Finder. Keeping the Info window for that file opened, if I then proceed again to delete the extension, nothing happens but the Hide extension checkbox turns itself on automatically! The only way I can really remove it is by deleting the extension in the info window. Did anybody notice some similar behavior with extensions in Tiger? I don't think that the Stuffit AVR is involve because when I delete the extension in the info window, it just promptly proceeds to uncompress the archive. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Pismo w/Tiger - battery time reduced and not calculated
All - I had been running Jaguar and Panther (for a short time) and was getting 3+ hours of runtime with AirPort enabled. After upgrading to Tiger, I've noticed a couple things. First, it doesn't calculate how much time is left on the battery. It will show percent, but not time. This has always been very accurate, but now is stuck 'calculating'. Second, it seems that my runtime is significantly reduced - probably around 50%. I remember seeing a similar thread, but I remember seeing quite a bit of confirmation both ways. I ran the cells down completely, hoping it was just some software/calibration thing - didn't help. I tried resetting the PMU... no different. Re: Upgrade my Wallstreet?
I have a G3 wallstreet and I would like to bring it more update. I would like to get it a faster processor (make it as fast as a G4), a bigger hard I don't want to do this myself. I would like to ship it out and have all this done. What do these kind of upgrades cost? I know it is cheaper to buy all the different bits needed and do it myself, but I don't have the patience. This is the point! patience. UYpgrading a Mac is a hobby, it's fun. Personally I have upgraded almost all the Macs I have owned (have a look at http://homepage.mac.com/bengi) and I can guarantee... it is an hobby. I use a G5 2 x 2 (soon replaced by a 2.7 x 2) everyday, but still type some stuff on the Classic accelerated to 68030 at 40 MHz and the Wallstreet with the BlueChip with 20 GB HD, 512 MB RAM, FW, USB, wireless, OS X 10.2.8 was a delight to take apart and upgrade. So if your idea is to ship the unit to someone to do the dirty job, well you better buy a new laptop. Ben -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Opinion wanted
I'd like to have opinions on what I should do with my daughter's iBook. Back in September 2004, I purchased a 12, 1GHz iBook for my daughter. All was well and she was very happy. About a month ago, she called me and said that her iBook was suddenly acting strangely. I went over and noticed that the display would only show vertical, narrow colored lines on a black background. I think I posted to the list about what the problem could be. In anycase, I asked her what happened and she said nothing. I was a little suspicious because after having used a PowerBook for more than 3 years, I know that things cannot get wrong all of a sudden for no reason. I took the iBook, still under warranty, to the closest Apple store. The genius looked at it and said there was obviously something wrong with the main logic board and said they would have to send it to the Apple's repair facility. 3 days later, I've got an email from the Apple repair facility asking me to call them because they had discovered a problem. I knew that this wouldn't be good so I called my daughter immediately and told her what was happening and that before calling Apple, I wanted to have the truth. Sure enough, something wrong happened. She actually spilled water over the keyboard and since she didn't know what to do and didn't want to tell me, you can imagine the consequences. So, I called Apple and they confirmed what I had just found out. There was still liquid residues on the motherboard and this had shorted the display circuit. It seems that the computer is still working fine because I was able to boot it in target disk mode just fine. Anyway, Apple quoted me at over $750 to replace the motherboard of the iBook who was purchased for $1000. So, what are my options here? I thought I could maybe find a replacement for less and replace it myself, since I have disassembled various PowerBooks and was able to put them back together and they still worked. However, that would probably void her warranty. OTOH, my experience is that the warranty might not be that helpful and will be running out anyway in a few months. So, what are you people suggesting? Thanks for any opinion! -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Opinion wanted
Well, the part will be hard to find on places like eBay, and pbparts.com doesn't even have anything that new listed yet. They have the 800Mhz logic board for about 650$, which means that the price being quoted by Apple is pretty close to what the part would cost through repair shops that will sell you the part by itself. My guess is that the cost without labor would be around 700$ for your particular model. Buying a used/refurbished one would cost about 800-900$, making it more expensive than Apple's repairs. All-in-all, you are in the worst possible position. The unit is too new to even reliably get parts for without scrapping another unit with a dead screen or something. Unfortunately, I only have three suggestions: 1) Pay Apple to get it to be repaired, since it will be cheaper than buying a used/new replacement. 2) Buy a used replacement unit, or a refurbished unit. A refurb 1.2Ghz iBook is 800$ from Apple right now (I just checked their website). 3) Don't get her another laptop for awhile, and then pick option #2. Rather harsh, but an option. I am sorry for your situation, as it quite honestly is grim, since the cost to get the parts is quite high. I have been in that boat before, dropping a Lombard that I had sunk 800$ into over a period of 8 months to have it dropped and the screen crack (while going to college on a shoestring budget!). Re: Opinion wanted
I had a surprising experience with a Fluke digital multimeter; I spilled Transmission fluid on it, and it quit working. I had to buy another one. Several months later I put batteries in it and it works like the other one. Certainly your mileage may vary. Maybe put it on ebay in one piece or part it out; I need a slot-loading combo drive myself, and the HD, memory and screen should fetch a bit. --- Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'd like to have opinions on what I should do with my daughter's iBook. Re: Opinion wanted
Laurent, Since Apple now has found out that liquid was spilled inside the iBook, I would expect that any future issues would be attributed to the liquid also. Therefore I would bite the bullet and find a new display and see if you can fix it yourself. I know that the iBooks are a real pain to work on, although not as bad as the Al Powerbooks, but it seems to be doable. Just get the directions to take it apart and give it a go. Apple markets the iBook to schools with the implied assurance that it is capable of withstanding the abuse school kids can deliver. I would thusly raise unholy hell with Apple and remind them that your family will personally lobby against any purchase of Apples by your school district, etc.. Hopefully Apple will realize that keeping your family as long term customers is more important than making a quick profit gouging you on repairs. If Apple no longer wants your family's business I would start looking for another similar iBook with other failed parts like a display. Given that a new 1.2 gig iBook goes for $900 at amazon.com I wouldn't spend more that $700 for a working 1.0 gig one and half that for one that needs repairs. After your done swapping parts you'll have a working iBook and lots of bits left over for future repairs... and the satisfaction of denying Apple the opportunity to gouge you again! BTW, my problem Pismo is sorta working after I put some fresh heat sink paste on the processor- it managed a whole day without freezing! I'm also in the market for another Pismo, dead or alive, within a day's drive of Minneapolis. Dyna -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Opinion wanted
If the ibook still works in all other areas besides the display, this is what I would do. Get an external monitor, hook it up and use it as an ibook mini with built-in keyboard. :) Have your daughter start saving her pennies for a new laptop if she really needs to be portable. When she gets a new laptop, take the HD out of the ibook mini, put it in a firewire case and either sell the ibook mini as parts to part collectors or sell the parts yourself. Oh yeah, if the RAM is compatible put that in the new laptop also. .nick On Thu, 19 May 2005, Laurent Daudelin wrote: I'd like to have opinions on what I should do with my daughter's iBook. Re: Opinion wanted
Why on earth should Apple be responsible for this? The equipment was in no way defective. They didn't spill water in it. And, Laurent had tried to teach his daughter not to take food and beverages near the computer. I believe that the kind of action your suggesting actually decreases the quality of customer service for everyone. Companies would cater only to those who scream. This is hard on the customer service people, who are more likely to give short shrift to those who don't scream. It's bad for Apple's bottom line. If Apple replace the iBook of every kid who did something stupid, the rest of us would pay the price in higher equipment costs.
