Hi I have a G4 ibook with airport extreme fitted and i connect through

Unless you are doing heavy file up-down loads a b router shold be fine.

I don't see any reason for the issue he reported (b router, g on the
powerbook, really slow connections).

It was a linksys wireless router I don't know the exact model though.

Makes no sense to me. I'll see what happens to me next week (Netgear

iBook trackpad

2005-06-04 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
The iBook trackpad has become so weird: after a few months of use the
surface has lost the usual matt appearance (especially the central
area where the finger goes more frequently) and the finger does not
move smoothly as usual.

I have had several PowerBooks with trackpads: the central glossy area
after a few months of use is normal, but I have never experienced
this problem. Is there any way to fix it?

Heat issue

2005-06-04 Thread Brian
I'm having a heat issue with my iBook G4. I'm aware of the official
list from apple on what to do when running 10.4.1, however, much of
this does not apply to me, and what does apply does not help.
A while back I read of a means to reset the vid ram, or something
similar that seemed to help this problem a while back. Does anyone
know what I'm talking about and know what the procedure is to do this?

Pismo Upgrades and PowerLogix....

2005-06-04 Thread Pacer

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

In researching my Pismo upgrade options I came across the following site:

I recommend this site for anyone thinking of an upgrade.

In regards to PowerLogix, you can find reviews of their service here:

Choose - PowerBook G3 2000 Rage128 Mobility
Choose - PowerLogix

The reviews there make me hesitate in deciding on PowerLogix regardless
of whether I can find a place that sells their stuff.

Further, the reviews might indicate the reason why PowerLogix is having
a problem.

I think I will stick to DayStar and/or Fastmac and their G4 550
upgrades. (Someone mailed me and said they were told by DayStar that
the iSight should work with the G4 550 Upgrade without any additional
software but that she could not confirm it herself.)

Now off to try and find out what is wrong with my Upgraded Wallstreet.
Would have helped if I had not packed up the documentation on the
upgrade board. Oops.

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon

Nancy Lawrence wrote:

I've been trying unsuccessfully to find out or actually purchase a
Powerlogix 900 G3 upgrade for at least 6 months, maybe longer, and I
always get that the store is not available at this time, and no other
places seem to be carrying it. So if you want an upgrade soon, then
you might abandon hope of getting a Powerlogix upgrade. If I
remember correctly, the store became permanently unavailable right
around the time of some big lawsuit in which Powerlogix is involved,
so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Please post or e-mail me directly if you find anything else out,
because I would really like to get this upgrade.

Good luck,
Nancy

Re: Wallstreet Dual-Boot Issues ..... OS 9 not working ... sigh

2005-06-04 Thread Pacer

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

Well, I wrassled, and then wrestled, with my PowerBook Wallstreet with
the processor upgrade (466 mhz CPU, probably from NewerTech) and have
come to the following conclusion:

My processor upgrade is incompatible with OS 9.

It does work with OS X.2, however.

OSX.2 has the screen backlight going dark, though.

So the thought is maybe trying to install OS X.3, but then I have an
issue with no OS X.3 disks.

I need to recoup all costs on this machine plus some profit to make up
for some of the loss on another machine (a PowerBook Wallstreet, 1gig
HD, 233mhz) which I will inevitable have.

I don't see being able to do this without getting the screen problem
fixed, so I will probably have to try and find some OS X.3 CDs for cheap.

(I tried doing an install of OS X.4 on a Pismo, then switching the drive
like I heard you could do for a Lombard, but no dice )

I sure wish I knew why my CPU won't work with OS 9, though.

If anyone has had a similar experience, let me know. I am not sure if
the CPU upgrade is a NewerTech one or some other company (it IS a 466mhz
G3, that much I DO know).

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon.

James Sanderson wrote:

I have a WS I that had the same issues only in in X.2.x. When I
upgraded to X.3.x, the backlighting and display sleep went away
problems and never came back. I will admit that I have never tried
putting the hard drive to sieep because I used to have an old
Travelstar 20 GB that would lock up if it did. I never changed the
setting after I changed the hard drive.

If you don't have Panther or you don't want to go through the trouble
of upgrading (the upgrade requires you to use Xpostfacto 3), let the
buyer put it on the machine. Take X off. The machine is upgradeable
and runs X.3 competently even with only 160 MB's, which is all I have
on mine. It's not blazing fast; it's useable if all the buyer wants
is to do word processing, reading mail, and surfing the internet. I
know that the more memory there is the better the machine operates; I
simply haven't put it on this one.

Forget all this other stuff. It doesn't sound like it's worth the
hassle, especially if you want to sell it.

Does anyone have or know where to find the pinout for a TiBook/DVI

I don't have that (but I'd love to have it as well), Apple certainly has

maybe we can offer some (other) useful help.

FYI, TiBooks use an LVDS interface to drive the LCD, and the interface

Re: Pismo Porcessor Upgrades ... G3 or G4?

2005-06-04 Thread sacear3

Pacer the Loon,

I recently upgraded my Pismo to the FastMac G4 550. I am extremely
pleased with the upgrade and the service FastMac provided.
FastMac was very helpful and professional, being courteous, helpful,
and informative throughout.
I did some research before choosing FastMac. I read all I could on the
internet. The best two sites I found for information about Pismo
upgrades are XLR8 (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/cpucards.html) and
MacOpinion Road Warrior
(http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/04/02/10/). The Road
Warrior site is in depth with many articles and user comments can be
found at the bottom of each article. I was researching DayStar and
PowerLogix when I learned about FastMac.

*** Warning: PowerLogix for all intent and purpose is out of business
and has been since last year. There are many reviews and statements on
the internet of them taking people's money and not delivering anything.
I don't know why their website is still up. Hence, I chose not to go
with PowerLogix.

Like I said, I am very happy with my FastMac upgrade. Also I have read
only positive reviews about the DayStar upgrades. I chose FastMac
because they are very close to where I live and the price was a little
less. FastMac requires you take the processor out and send only that to
them. DayStar asks that you send in your whole PowerBook.

That is my report.

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

Speaking of processor upgrades: G4 500/550 Mhz or G3 900 Mhz for my
GF's PowerBook Pismo?

Theoretically the G3 900 from PowerLogix will allow iSight to run, but
I

can't find a way to purchase it. (PowerLogix's site is not allowing me
to buy from them and no one else is listing it.)

FastMac seems to have a good G4 550 upgrade price which includes the
shipping et al, but would it maybe be better to just get the faster G3?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon

Converting music tapes to the computer

2005-06-04 Thread Brian
I have an iBook G4 which I am attempting to use to record some audio
tapes to the computer. I'm using the stereo headphone jack, since my
stereo system does not have a line out, a griffin iMic and Sound Studio.
Everything seems to be going fine, except that the audio seems to be
recording in mono instead of stereo, and I'm not quite sure how to
fix that. Can anyone help me out?

international travel-charging issues?

2005-06-04 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have the good fortune to be traveling to the UK in a couple of weeks.
It seems to me that I read somewhere that I don't need a converter to
charge my laptop--I only need an adaptor plug. Does anyone know if this
is correct? If so, would this hold true for iPod shuffles as well? (I
have the usb charger for the Shuffle.) One more thing--Apple sells a
world adaptor pack; would there be any reason I couldn't just use the
plugs I already have?

Thanks for any advice,

anyone know if this is correct? If so, would this hold true for iPod
shuffles as well? (I have the usb charger for the Shuffle.) One more
thing--Apple sells a world adaptor pack; would there be any reason I
couldn't just use the plugs I already have?

Thanks for any advice,
Kate

I have an iBook G4 which I am attempting to use to record some audio

recording in mono instead of stereo, and I'm not quite sure how to
fix that. Can anyone help me out?

I don't know Sound Studio, but did you start off with a stereo file? Do you
have the correct adapter or cable for the iMic? You might have a mono 1/8
connector. A stereo adapter has a second band below the tip.
