linux on a pismo
Hi All been playing around today with my spare pismo (back up mac) and deceided to load ubuntu linux on it and WOW!!! it is fast stable and very user friendly. The system specs before i started were 400cpu 384 ram 10gb hdd airport card fitted cdrw/dvd combo, running 10.4.2 now running linux I think i might just keep it on it because it synced with my wireless network straight away and the book is running perfect, I have the full install on there and i still have over 6 gb for files. My ipod is seen as a hdd and my external hdd (fire wire is seen also) the only thing that is not good is that it only supports 1 battery, But hey small price to pay for the rest of it all, What other linux will run on the pismo or even the 366 ibook clam as i have one of those sat doing nothing at the moment. Re: linux on a pismo
hey small price to pay for the rest of it all, What other linux will run on the pismo or even the 366 ibook clam as i have one of those sat doing nothing at the moment. The primary criterion is whether the Mac is OldWorld (Openfirmware version 3) or NewWorld (OpenFirmware version = 3) The pismo and all models of ibook are New World systems. Any PPC version of linux will boot and install on any New World system. It's possible that certain components of certain models may not be as well supported as under OSX, but you will be able to install Linux. Here's a list of different linux versions: http://www.penguinppc.org/about/dis tributions.php -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Question, MS Office or Open Office/Neo Office for G4 iBook OSX?
I'm looking for feedback about office suite packages for my Dad to use on his G4 iBook (running Jaguar). Right now he's using Office 97 in classic mode but he suspects that this may be causing instability and freezes (need to ask him if Office is crashing or the whole OS is crashing). I told him that those of us who toil on the Windows side frequently associate system instability with the addition of MS software but I'm not sure he is convinced. Also Office 97 is increasingly unable to read Office files he receives from others (presumably later versions). I'm inclined to recommend Open Office or Neo Office www.openoffice.org but that may not be right for him. He really doesn't like tinkering from his computer and he can get Office at academic pricing ($150?) so he might well be happier just buying Office and installing it. I'd like to here from more serious Open Office (or Neo Office) users concerning computability with other office programs. If it will read as wide a range of formats as MS Office then I might take a shot at downloading it and burning a CD for him. I like Neo Office but I don't do much more than simpltext with it so I know nothing about conversions. Thanks -- Andrew in Ann Arbor -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Question, MS Office or Open Office/Neo Office for G4 iBook OSX?
I've had a few Word documents that Open Office simply won't open properly--mostly those with graphics. For those few instances I use a mac at work that has Word:Mac version X (I'm covered by the site licence, just haven't gotten around to installing it on my own machine yet. As far as opening spreadsheets or databases, I'd say 90% of what I've tried to open works with Open Office--the few times that it wouldn't open properly, I've not figured out what was causing the program to balk. I've had no experience with NeoOffice. Any reason he couldn't also switch to AppleWorks? :) Later.Howard -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: A Sad Duty
I would exactly that too. Also, I might go ahead and update that OS to whatever latest x.x.x version is available for it at the Apple web site. And the security updates. For other updates from Apple on things like iTunes and AirPort, I'd let the new owner run them if he/she wants them. Re: scanning software?
A few days ago I asked about scanning software that would make one PDF file of multiple scans. Turns out there is a method to do this built into Tiger, according to macosxhints. It adds an additional step, but the price is right and it seems easy enough. You must first scan all the pages, getting a separate PDF file for each page. Then you can select the documents that you want to combine in the Finder and then Control-click on them to bring up the contextual menu. Choose Automator - Create Workflow. Once Automator opens, add three steps to your Untitled workflow: -Finder: Get Selected Finder Items. Actually, this one is automatically added if you had the files selected in the Finder. -PDF: Combine PDF Pages. -Finder: Open Finder Items (Open with Default Application). This will combine everything, then open up a Preview document with all the PDF pages nicely laid out in one document. You can save the workflow if you do this on a regular basis. Then Control-clicking on a group of PDFs will give you a contextual menu with your workflow ready to go. For anyone with too much money, I also found several programs that cost $49 to $499 that will do the same thing. Peter -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Ubuntu on PB rev2
Has anyone gotten Ubuntu on a Powerbook G3 233MHz (66MHz bus?) installed? I can't seem to boot off the cd. Thanks in advance! A G3-233 is an old-world machine. Old world machines are harder to get linux onto. I think Ubuntu doesn't support old-world machines. In general, you'll probably find a distro release that is 3 or more years old will install more smoothly on an oldworld machine. Also, you may need to make boot floppies. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Hard Drive Replacement
I saw a noticeable improvement in speed on my Pismo as I upgraded drives from the original to the current 7200 rpm travelstar. At least one intermediate between the original and current, maybe more. You should see the same unless bus speed is a factor? You've probably seen where, on this thread, mention was made that the faster drive will use more battery power and produce more heat. How, if at all, did these effect your Pismo? Thanks, bob Heat and battery life effects were not significant. No additional heat out of the HD or battery, battery life good. Faster drives don't necessarily use more power or generate more heat. Different manufacturers use different quality bearings and motors, and drive technology is improving all the time (today's 7200 rpm drives produce less heat/use less power than drives from only a few years ago). You really have to compare power consumption rates for the various drives (heat is mostly a function of power use). As a point of reference, I put an Hitachi 7K60 7200 rpm HD in my Pismo. It's cooler and quieter than the original 4200 rpm OEM drive. -Jeff[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You can't brew a premium lager with a Kool-aid mentality. --Harold Green in _The_Red_Green_Show_ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
