I didn't find any Wallstreet upgrades at Daystar. Wegener's prices
seem quite for a G3 upgrade to 400 MHz.

Pismo Panasonic LCD

2005-08-30 Thread Stuart Saunders

There I was with my brilliant Keynote presentation and eager audience.

Could not get contact between Pismo and the Panasonic LCD. Cable was
the the same at each end, fitted the 15 pin D connector on the back of
the Pismo. I tried shutting down each, restarting each simultaneously,
and then each one first, etc, etc, per help instructions, but could
not get a hint of connection apart from the led on the LCD blinking
briefly when I clicked on 'detect displays' in System Preferences
Displays.

Only gave a precis of my talk, unaided, hopefully can connect
present another day.

Luckily crowd was very polite, only heard one muttering of must be
Apple computers. Could not find the book for the LCD, not sure it
would have been in English if I had found it!

Anybody know what I was doing wrong?

TIA,
Stuart.

Re: Pismo Panasonic LCD

2005-08-30 Thread Robert Eye
Sometimes projectors seem to be particular about the
resolution they are trying to project; the laptop and
the projector have to match. We've had some
difficulties at monthly meetings getting the
presenter's personal laptops to connect to our
projector (a Dell labeled projector - not sure if it's
LCD or DLS). All encounters here are with
Windows-based laptops.

I assume your Pismo works with other projectors and
external monitors?

P.S. You wrote: Luckily crowd was very polite, only

I remember Apple's commercial where a Windows laptop
can't do the job during a presentation, and the
members of the audience are calling out various
suggestions to fix the problem. The last suggestion
was Get a Macintosh.

To tell you the truth, I don't really remember what I tried - this
was 6 months ago and a one-time thing. But it definitely shook my
confidence that I could handle anything Mac! (Well, I did handle it,
but if I hadn't brought my 17 with its extra port, I don't think I
would have succeeded, since I'd already tried everything I could
think of with the speaker's 12.)

Re: upgrading my WallStreet

2005-08-30 Thread Gary Goldberg
From: david [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: upgrading my wallstreet

I've been meaning to fix my 250 wallstreet for some time now, i've got the
sound card/power supply part to replace, i'm getting more ram to install
(2 x 256), and now i'm thinking... is it worth it to buy one of those
sonnet crescendo upgrades?

I can't say it's been especially worthile in the 3 years I've had the
G4/500 upgrade. Perhaps burning CD's is faster, but not much
anything else. And I had to upgrade from OS 8.1 to 9.1 or
the CPU upgrade wouldn't work (but not a bad idea anyway :-)
I also found out that I had to put a . before my Iomega extension
or I'd get shutdown freezes. something neither Sonnet nor
Iomega knew or admitted to.

Pismo DVD/CD drive ???

2005-08-30 Thread K

Good evening Lista's,
My 3rd LG (POS!!!) CD/DVD drive has gone south.. Does anyone know if
the Mat unit (drive and sled) is a perfect match for the Pismo as a
replacement? I am really tired of screwing around with the LG to get it
working...It hast to be ejected and smacked on the table in order to get
it to recognize that there is a dvd or cd in it...Once it recognizes
that something is there, it works fine..but it it's a real pain to do
that every time and the rest of the family is really PO'd about it...
If anyone on list happens to have or knows someone that has a working
complete unit, please respond off line...
My son has now installed Tiger on this Pismo and it seems to be runing
like a raped ape!! Pismo 400..1gb ram 10gb Toshiba hd 10.42

Regards and thanks in advance,
Mike K

Re: Wallstreet pcmcia card

2005-08-30 Thread del.mary.stubbs
I just acquired a used ADS USB 2 port USB pcmcia card ( got it to enable a
USB mouse, and smart media card adapter) It came without instructions.
I plugged it in to the top slot, and a little empty box showed up on the
screen. I tried both an apple usb mouse and a usb card reader, but neither
showed up.. Then I pushed the tiny button over it and it ejected.
An hour later the Wallstreet crashed for the first time (seperate email
concerning)
Any help? thanks much!, Del

You might have to install the USB software. I cant remember where to
find it but I think its USB Extensions 1.4.1 or something like that.

Thanks for the reply, I looked up Apple Support, was ready to download when
I read this on the 1.4.1 page

Important: Mac OS versions 9.1 and later include a later version of this
software. Installing USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 over Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 or
later could result in the USB adapter card not working.

Since I am running 9.2.2 on the Wallstreet, any different suggestions to
get the card working? thanks, Del
And thankyou to the 2 people who wrote helping me to get my Wallstreet
restarted!

I was told that the INSTALLER looks for USB devices, and if it didn't
see such; it skipped that code.

When I added a card to m\y WS; I ended up with a full OS install.

Defective iBook logicboard for trash or?

2005-08-30 Thread Laurent Daudelin
I just replaced the logicboard in my daughter's iBook. I was wondering if
the old board would have any value. It is a 1GHz G4 board. The only thing
that was wrong after she spilled water on it was the display. I was able to
boot it in FireWire disk mode so I would think that most components are
still working.

So, would it be worth to put it on eBay? I was thinking that some shop with
a surface mount machine might be able to do something with it.

Ideas?

-Laurent.

LISP: n. [from `LISt Processing language', but mythically from `Lots of
Irritating Superfluous Parentheses'] AI's mother tongue, a language based on
the ideas of (a) variable-length lists and trees as fundamental data types,
and (b) the interpretation of code as data and vice-versa. Invented by John
McCarthy at MIT in the late 1950s, it is actually older than any other HLL
still in use except FORTRAN. Accordingly, it has undergone considerable
adaptive radiation over the years; modern variants are quite different in
detail from the original LISP 1.5. The dominant HLL among hackers until the
early 1980s, LISP now shares the throne with C. Its partisans claim it is
the only language that is truly beautiful. See languages of choice.

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive ???

2005-08-30 Thread PeterH5322

In a message dated 8/30/05 9:11:21 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

The MATSHITA (Panasonic) drive in the machine is obsolete, and Panasonic is
not making any more tray loading drives.

Every one has been replaced by the UJ-845-B, which is a slot loader, is +/-
everything, and is two-layer DVD-R-R/W.

Sadly, this isn't on Apple's approved list, so you will have to use
PatchBurn to support it.

A perhaps better choice is the Pioneer DVR-K05, which IS supported by 10.4,
but is not by 10.3 without PatchBurn.

This Pioneer drive has a tray loading variant.

I have both of these drives in my Lombard and Pismo, and they are fine for
DVD playing and CD reading and writing, but I have yet to successfully burn a
DVD with these.

The fine print on these drives is they work best with an 80-wire/40-pin
cable, but that is NOT the way they can be installed in a laptop, although
there
ARE adapters which are intended for installing these drives in Shuttle type
PeeCees, and which DO support 80-wire/40-pin cables.

Perhaps this is the old multiword vs DMA issue with some of the PowerPCs?

Anyway, I know of no currently manufactured drive which will accept the
Lombard/Pismo bezel, and the same is true of the MCE drives for the Wallstreet.

The tray loading Pioneer drive (DVR-K15?) is just enough different in the
bezel attachment area that is is a NO-GO.
