Pismo start up problem

2005-09-13 Thread kaldav

Hello,
I have a Pismo 400 mhz, 576 mb ram, 48 GB hard drive running 10.3.8.
When I start up it frequently begins and then shows the screen with
the 'you will need to restart by holding down the power key'- which I
think is kernel panic.

What should I do to fix this start up problem?
Thanks.

Dead screen on dual USB iBook

2005-09-13 Thread dads

Hey all,

My screen appears to have died. I can still access the HD in firewire
target mode, and when I power up it makes all the appropriate sounds
while the screen stays dark. If I hit power again and then return,
the system appears to shut down.

Can anybody shed any further light on diagnostics or direct me to
other resources? I'm game to replace the screen, but would like to
make sure that's the problem before proceeding.

Regards,

Erik Ness

12.1 in. 1.5ghz powerbook

2005-09-13 Thread Matthew Dudek
Hey guys and girls,

My old Pismo seems just about ready to be put out to pasture... or at least
used as my media PC, and I am trying to figure out the best deal for the
money, and something that will also stick around for at least as long as my
Pismo has. Any opinions on the 1.5ghz 12 inch? vs. the 1.33ghz? and also, does
anyone have an idea of when the product line should be revised again? If it
will be revised in January I can put up with my Pismo until then.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

I'd be surprised if the line was revised early next year, except for maybe a
slight speed bump, I can't see any major revision until Apple starts using
processors from Intel and that won't happen probably until the end of next
year.

Re: OS X on G3 Series PowerBook

2005-09-13 Thread Art Richard

Paul,

There are no stupid questions, just questions that failed to be
asked. I had looked at XPostFacto before and it states that it is not
for the G3 Series PowerBook. Just this morning, I said what the heck
and I tried using XPostFacto to see if that would help. When i ran it,
it indicated a problem with my install (OS 10.2) CD. I then ran Tech
Tools Pro and found that there were some bundle bits bad on that CD.
It is possible that this has been my problem all along, although I
thought that the system verified the install CD before starting
installation. I am in the process of obtaining a replacement OS 10.2
install disk. I hope the new disk solves the problem.

Re: OS X on G3 Series PowerBook

2005-09-13 Thread Luis Sequeira

I appreciate your input. I don't know if waiting and trying to Load

OS X later will do much good. I have been trying to load OS X for
almost a year, trying every few months. Recently, I upgraded my disk
drive from 4 Gigs to 12 Gigs, and formatted the disk into two
partitions, the lower one being 8 Gigs. Of course, I will keep trying,
but I don't have much confidence that it will ever work. The only OS X
system disks I have are OS 10.2. These disks loaded OK on my G3 Blue

White 400 Mhz Mac, so I think that the disks are OK.

Just a thought... it may be wiser to set the first partition to be a
little UNDER 8 Gigs...

I suppose this is a stupid question, but, are you using XPostFacto?

 Have you tried using it?

I don't think it is stupid at all. However, the Wallstreet is
supposed to allow 10.2 WITHOUT XPostFacto; it should be needed for
10.3 and newer, though.

Device control is integrated into the system. The device is always ready.
You put a disk in and it should appear on the desktop. I am assuming here
that we are talking about an internal CD/DVD drive. If it suddenly stopped
reading any disk, then I guess there is a problem with it. If you have
another CD/DVD drive in another Mac, you can try those disks there just to
be sure.

Re: Dead screen on dual USB iBook

2005-09-13 Thread Henry Taylor
One might also mention that the Dual USB iBooks have a history of
this. If I remember correctly, it stems from the hinge eating away at
the wires that run through it. Unfortunately, I don't remember if
Apple covers this as they do the iBook logic board problems. You
might call Apple and see if covered, or email them (free).

Good luck,
Henry

Dead Lombard

2005-09-13 Thread Henry Taylor

I apologize for the length of this in advance.
My Lombard was running fine, I was multitasking (iTunes, Excell.
Safari, Knofabulator, and mail) when the machine froze. I tried
C-C-Esc to no avail. I then used O-C-Power. The machine shut down,
and thats where it still is. I do not get the start up chimes, just
nothing. I tried the reset in the back, nothing. I have replaced the
charge card, the sound/power card, and tried a different a/c charger,
nothing. All the modules are plugged in snugly, I tried with keyboard
out, HD out, and processor out, in all combinations, nothing. The
only odd thing is when I plug in the adapter, the green sleep light
remains on, untill I do the reset button in the rear, or if I press
the reset button twice, the green sleep light remains on, every other
push cycle will light it up, same with the power cord, plug it in,
light on. Unplug and plug back in, off.

My next stop will be the Logic board, though I replaced it a few months back.

Any ideas or comments?

Henry

That sounds a bit like a processor failure, whether the processor
daughterboard is not firmly in place, although you mention that all modules
are plugged in snugly, or the processor has failed altogether. I would
probably try to find another Lombard processor daughterboard before
replacing the main logicboard.

the reset button twice, the green sleep light remains on, every other
push cycle will light it up, same with the power cord, plug it in,
light on. Unplug and plug back in, off.
My next stop will be the Logic board, though I replaced it a few
months back.

Re: Dead screen on dual USB iBook

2005-09-13 Thread John Siple
You might have the old worn video cable problem, which can take a
couple of forms. There are two functions of the cable that goes from
the motherboard to the video section. One is to connect a reed switch
that sleeps the computer when you close the cover. With some cable
failures this switch sleeps the display when the cover is opened
fully, but allows the display to light when the cover is only opened
10-30 degrees or so. There are other failures that just won't allow
the main video voltage to get to the backlight, or won't allow the
video signal through.

If you can attach an external monitor to the iBook and it works, then
you probably have a cable failure (your MB is sending out a good
video signal).

There's a good take-apart site for instructions and I can send you
docs on the problem offlist if you want. I've done the replacement.
It's tricky.

Could be the LCD screen, the inverter board or simply the ribbon

Re: Does AL powerbook read DVD+R disks?

2005-09-13 Thread csean

Quick question. I have a G4/1.33 12 with Superdrive. Would it read
DVD+R disks with movies burnt using DVD Recorder connected to TV?

Apple spec'd its drives before + media became popular, or perhaps even
available.

After I replaced my OEM DVD-CD-ROM drive with a generic DVD-CD-ROM-
R-R/W
drive which included two-layer capability, I was surprised that
none of

the Apple products would support + media, so for a while I was stuck
burning two disks: a + one for recorder/player playing, and a - one
for

laptop playing.

Okay, thanks for all the info, but maybe I wasn't clear with my
question, as a few people responded about internal superdrives in
powerbooks. But I was asking about a DVD Recorder you hook up to your
TV and, in my case, also to our satellite TV decoder box. I've found
a great deal on a DVD recorder that burns to DVD+R and DVD+RW disks
only (not to DVD-R). I know Macs tended to prefer DVD-R disks in the
past, and I know my 12 G4/1.33 Al Book with Superdrive reads movies
copied on DVD-R disks just fine.
I wanted to know if movies I recorded from the TV to DVD+R disks
could be read okay on the Al Book. Oddly, I can't find the specs
anywhere, so I was hoping to find someone who has actually done this
and can provide the info from personal experience.

Thanks.
Chris

I changed the drive to a +/- superdrive (Pioneer DVR-K05) *and* installed
PatchBurn, and it will read + disks.

Without PatchBurn, it would only read - disks.

I believe it is more related to the system software's view of the drive's
capabilities than it is of the drive's capabilities themselves.

Before PatchBurn, the drive was not supported; after PatchBurn, it was
supported by vendor (but not by Apple), but nevertheless, it now will
read + disks, whereas before it wouldn't.

Put it back together the next day and it started.. and is still

The SuperDrive installed in your powerbook will only read or write
DVD-R or DVD-RW media. It will not read DVD+R or DVD+RW disks, no
matter what type of device they were recorded on.

If you want to read +R or +RW disks on your powerbook, you will need
to purchase an external drive that is capable of reading those disks,

Re: Replacing hard drive in PowerBook under extended AppleCare?

Yes, I agree that it is kind of a stupid policy. When you get extended
AppleCare, that means that you are locked to your drive for 3 years. Sure,
there are portable FireWire enclosures, but it's not as convenient as having
the hard disk space internally...

padded cell: n. Where you put lusers so they can't hurt anything. A program
that limits a luser to a carefully restricted subset of the capabilities of
the host system (for example, the `rsh(1)' utility on USG Unix). Note that
this is different from an iron box because it is overt and not aimed at
enforcing security so much as protecting others (and the luser) from the
consequences of the luser's boundless naivete (see naive). Also `padded cell
environment'.

Re: Does AL powerbook read DVD+R disks?

Quick question. I have a G4/1.33 12 with Superdrive. Would it read

I've checked the specs online and all it says is reads DVDs at up
to 8x. Only the recent PBs mention reads DVD+R.
I was thinking of getting a Philips DVD Recorder that burns to DVD
+R and +RW only. Great deal, but only if it works!

FYI my 1.5Ghz will play a DVD+RW that was burned on an RCA set-top.

That's interesting. I could understand them not covering the drive,
but to not cover the rest of the warranty seems a bit odd. I wonder
if that could be challenged under the Magnuson-Moss act. That one
comes up a lot when a car dealer will try and invalidate a car
warranty claim based on the fact that an aftermarket part is
installed on the car (one that does not have anything to do with
problem being covered under warranty). For example, I replace the
shifter in my car myself, the water pump fails, and the dealer won't
cover the water pump failure even though it's covered under warranty.

External FW drives problems and Tiger?

2005-09-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm ready to install Tiger on my PB G4 and will first backup critical files
to a Smartdisk Firelite 20GB firewire drive. I understand there were
problems with fw drives not being recognized in 10.3. Does anyone know if
that problem has been fixed with Tiger or should I be concerned?

Thanks,

Don

I've been using 3 or 4 different FireWire drives under 10.4.2 without any

Re: External FW drives problems and Tiger?

2005-09-13 Thread Harry Corsover
There are two things to watch out for. One is whether the disk will
be recognized (or mount). The other is whether the disk is bootable.
The first is much less likely to be a problem, but I ran into the
second when I bought two FireWire 80GB disks from IOGear. They were
not bootable. I went several rounds with them claiming we never
advertised them as bootable (which IMO is like selling a car without
a fuel system, saying we never advertised that it had a fuel
system) before they agreed to replace them with bootable models.

The only way I know (short of trial and error) is to get direct
information from the drive manufacturer about this.

Regards,

Harry Corsover
