I bought a firewire/usb ports external case at CompUSA for $39 or so.
A Maxtor internal IDE CD-R 52x52x32 , at Staples (on sale)39 to 49
bucks. There are internal DVD burners also on sale at Staples, Compusa,
Sam Club, etc. Keep an eye out for sales. Put either the CD-R or DVD or
HD in the case to make a wonderful firewire external CD burner, DVD
burner or HD. I also bought a 2.5 profile 40GB HD and an 2.5 usb
external case
(for my G3 pismo) both at Compusa for a small profile external HD. Try
www.headgap.com for any
equipment and mac needs. They are one of the best places for deals also.

Re: Recommended external DVD burner?

2005-11-07 Thread David Brostoff
MacWorld had reviews of 16X drives earlier this
year (you can google it or search directly on
macworld.com). The LaCie D2 16X DVD±RW was their
pick for value (Plextor had a faster, though much
more expensive drive).

Based on MacWorld and other sources, I bought the
LaCie and have been very satisfied. The unit is
very solidly built. I used Pricegrabber.com as a
convenient way of finding a low price.

For media, I recommend Taiyo Yuden 8X (or 16X,
but only for non-critical data; and remember that
8X DVD is about 6 times faster than 8X CD) on
Rima.com.

Re: Mail.app and Keychain

2005-11-07 Thread John McGibney
Its a mail server problem. If mail can't connect to the server it
asks for your email password again. It assumes that you entered it
incorrectly or it has changed since the last connection. Ignore it
and it will reuse the original one on the next mail check.

I've run into the same problem, but only with e-mail accounts from a

tweak the

Happens very occasionally, mail download via POP, can be to either my

I've run into a similar issue with a free aim.com email address I got
a few weeks ago. There would be periods where the saved passwords in
mail.app in Panther, as well as in Thunderbird mail on WinXP would not
be accepted. My guess is that the mail server was undergoing some
sort of maintenance or heavy load at the time, and the timeouts were
failing. This was the only account I was having the problem with, and
it was ocurring from two different platforms, so it definitely wasn't
an OSX mail.app-specific problem.

So is everyone who suffers from this mailzheimers syndrome running on

Try running repair Keychain from keychain utility.

You can also delete the login keychain and start a new one. I had to
do that once. (Though you'll likely want to make sure you know all
