accessing mpeg video files on OS X ?

2006-02-17 Thread Amber Robey

Hello,

A relative in England has sent me two MPEG files but Quicktime does
not recognize or play them.
Are there any 3rd party programs that would allow me to view these
videos and be able to convert them to Quicktime or to some format
that I can import into iDVD ?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated,

Amber

PS - this is the error message I received:

QuickTime cannot open the file: AV02152006_101558-1.mpg
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)

Yes, I did that. I think I've found the problem. I have another 60g

Hi Amber,

If you're looking to burn to DVD, I've found Toast 7 to be pretty

You can try burning it to DVD and reimporting.

Apple wants another $20? $30? for the mpeg-2 codec for QT.

Re: accessing mpeg video files on OS X ?

2006-02-17 Thread Amber Robey

Hi,

Basically, what I am trying to do is link several different video
files together to make one custom iDVD for my Dad's 65th Birthday. I
am getting film clips from several family members and friends (some
in England, some in Canada here). I need to edit all these different
film clips and merge them together to create an iDVD presentation
that I can burn to a DVD for him.

So, I need to find a way that I can access these files and convert
them to Quicktime.

Hello Amanda,

Yes...Toast would normally be great just for burning to DVD but I
need to link all these videos together in iDVD.

I am trying to put together a DVD for my dad's 65th Birthday and
have relatives and friends in England and Canada sending me video,
sound clips and photos. It's turning out to be quite a big job now

etc into iMovie and/or iDVD to create a DVD for him of everybody
wishing him Happy Birthday.

You can get VLC to output separate audio and video streams in a format
that quicktime would understand. If you have QT Pro you can then combine
the audio and video and output it as a DV stream which iMovie would
understand, at a cost of about 6G/hour of video.

Or you can output them into something more useful and mux them together
and burn them all using free tools. Its complicated and time consuming.
You'll need a few tools and need to learn about how a video stream is
put together, the basics, to use the tools.

Or, buy/upgrade to Toast 7, its rather good about taking stuff like
you've got and making a watchable DVD from it, albeit without fancy
iMovie type eye candy.

If you have at least a G4, it should be fast enough for you to

I guess my other option is to try and get them to send it a format

format for video

2006-02-17 Thread Amber Robey

Hello again,

Thanks for all your help with this everybody !!!
I have tried the FFMPEGFX application but running into trouble as it
cannot seem to convert the video into anything I can use in iDVD.

It is the relatives in England whose clips are giving me trouble.
Both of them have PC's and seem to be sending in MPEG format.

Are there other formats that might be easier to convert and import
into iMovie or to open and run in Quicktime ?

Is there a way to convert the clips into Quicktime format ? If I can
get them into Quicktime format, I can use them in iMovie and iDVD.

I would have thought that ffMPEGfx would have been able to provide you with
different output formats, like DV. Isn't what you are seeing? iDVD, if I
remember correctly, will only accept DV format.

The most flexible way will cost you $20 - that' s the price of
Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component.
With that installed, you can use the wonder - and free - program MPEG
Stream Clip to export the video to dv.

Or, if you just want to produce a dvd, you can do it for free. Just
use MovieGate to make a dvd. You can create a menu and chapters for it.
(this way, of course, you don't get to edit the video, but you get a
dvd ready in under a half hour :-))

You can get both MPEG Stream Clip and MovieGate from the excellent
french site www.macetvideo.com

rant I fail to see why iDVD does not support mpeg2 files, even if
the qt mpeg2 component is installed /rant
That's one more point in favor of MovieGate: if the video files are
already mpeg2, they do not need to be reencoded to produce a dvd.

Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-17 Thread calebcupplessocialism

Dear listers,

This is the second time I've had to email NewerTech support about
replacing a battery, in the past month, but I'm starting to wonder if
it's not my Lombard that's causing my battery problems, instead of
the batteries themselves. I know the charging board is good on it,
AFAIK, and the batteries did quit showing up as charged, with a
corresponding light on the LED indicators on the side of the battery.
Still, it's curious as to how a good company can send me two bad
batteries in a row, without the possibility of a machine problem..

Well, hopefully you'll all have some good advice for me,
Caleb

P.S. Is it wrong to send messages to both the Google Groups and the
old Maclaunch list, or is it acceptable?

Hi Caleb,

Thank you for your input on this query. I was able to convert/
transcode the file into MPEG4 and then open it up in Quicktime and in
iMovie.

However, the quality is not greatlots of tiny blocks and a lot
of video/audio stuttering that was not present when I played the
original mpeg video file in VLC.

If I purchase this upgrade, would it allow me to import the original
video into iMovie without the loss of video quality that I described
above ? i.e. with the MPEG-2 Playback Component upgrade, will I be
able to open the original file directly into Quicktime or import into
iMovie and get close to the original quality of video (which was very
clean/sharp) ?

If so, I'll go ahead and buy it.

Re: G-Books Google List

It does seem improper to cull e-mail addresses for mass messages.
One thing about the MacLaunch system that seems to work better for me

These do not seem real options in the Google list.

Hello everyone. Twice, I have received personal email (blasted to
individuals signed up for the google group I think) about issues with
the google groups list.

List nannies - get your act together - some people seem to be having
trouble signing up and once signed up they have no clue as to how to
unsubscribe.

I had to figure it out myself, since we are given very little
instruction.

I wanted to use the same email as on the maclaunch server so I used
the email signup option (send an email to: g-books-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). That worked fine, except that when I
went to the google group page:

http://groups.google.com/group/g-books
I was told I was not a member. So, I scratched my head and sent a
message about this to the list (maclaunch), but got no useful response.

The light bulb went off and I realized that I had to sign in online
to get into the google group (even though I was already
subscribed!!! - got the confirmation email), so I created an
account (duh!). All is well now.

BUT I would like that people not cull our individual email
addresses for their own uses!!!

Cliff,

Have you tried the digest from Google Groups? I'm asking because I haven't
used it. Since it's called a digest, I would imagine that you should be able
to do what you do now in Eudora, unless the Google Groups digest is really
different.

BTW, just a friendly reminder from your friendly G-Books List Nanny to,

I use a 15 Powerbook with iCurve and an external Dell LCD.

There is a hack out there which will allow some iBooks to use monitor
spanning (2 separate screens) as opposed to mirroring (2 identical screens).

You will love the extra workspace when you are home.

I use a 21 at home which lets me watch TV using picture in picture.

At work I have a 17... No TV though :-/

I also have an external keyboard for both (Apple Wired at work and Wireless
at home) and mouse.

I dont know why, but I have had _zero_ luck bringing any third party
WS or lombard batteries back to life. BTI or Newertech.

Well, I called NewerTech and they think it's a bad PMU, but I still
want a second opinion. They did say that they could get approval for
another replacement, if I wanted to, however.

So, are there any other symptoms of a bad PMU other than fried
batteries? I really don't want to ship my machine off, because it's
got all my stuff on it, and it's got a couple of cracks in the lower
case, and one to the left of the LCD on the inside of the lid that I
don't want to stress any more than I have to.

Also, before I forget, does anyone know the keyboard combination to
force the fans to come on, because I suspect that mine has a bad fan,
as well.

*sighs as he's planning on spending the price of a used TiBook to get
the Lombard fixed*

Does this mean I *must* have a Google account just to be able to get a
digest to the list? Or is there a way to email in a request for a digest
like there is to email in a request to get the listings individually?

Did you notice any odd behavior ? For example my primary lombard
will charge my one good battery even though the battery reads 100%.
This worries me.

You can always try swapping out the PMU - if I knew where it was.

Not sure what you are saying here ...

You are spending money like buying a Ti to repair a Lombard - WHY ?

There is no PMU board on a Lombard - so what is being replaced/repaired ?

Even if you are sending it away, take yer HD out - really easy in a Lombard
!

A: I like the Lombard/Pismo form factor much better than the TiBook
form factor. Also, the Lombard, if I spread the upgrades out over a
long enough time, it'll pay for itself in productivity. Plus, the
Lombard is much easier to upgrade...

B: I had no clue that there was no PMU on the Lombard. Thanks for telling me.

C: I know how easy it is to remove a HD on a Lombard, and I've
rebuilt a PB 190 from parts, so I know how to do that stuff.

Thanks for the info,

Amber

Amber, there is no guarantee that the MPEG-2 Component will playback
your relatives' videos. Is the video your relatives sent to you
indeed MPEG-2? It could very well be MPEG-1. As Caleb incorrectly
posted, MPEG-1 playback is and has been built-in to Quicktime for
many versions. The problem is either the files your relatives sent
were not mastered correctly, so Quicktime is not opening them, or
they are in a format Quicktime doesn't handle, like MPEG-2, or they
are not really MPEG at all and are just mislabeled as such (they may
be some Windows Media codec).

How long are the videos? If they are only a few minutes long and you
have lots of disk space to use temporarily, try to use ffmpegX or VLC
to transcode the video to DV. Or try H.264 instead, as I too have
seen the ffmpeg MPEG4 encoder to be buggy. Going the DV route will
produce a better end result, since you will only be transcoding once,
not twice.

If you are still having problems, can you drop the relatives MPEG
files onto the window in ffmpegX? In the status boxes on the left
side, it should tell you what format, resolution, bitrate, etc the
Video and Audio are. The GUI uses mplayer to read out this
info. What does it say about those files?

As Caleb incorrectly posted, MPEG-1 playback is and has been

Eh, I got it halfway right, at least. I've never had reason to work
with MPEG-1, so I was playing the guessing game there. The MPEG-4
stuff is all correct, though.

Amber, I'd try opening them with Windows Media Player, if you've got
it. It's a miserable piece of horribly buggy code, but it does work,
some of the time. As Phil said, VLC usually does a pretty decent job,
or it has on my Linux box with plenty of horsepower and disk space..

I've upgraded my BW (G4/450) and iBook (G3/500) from 4.3 to 4.4 to

Hey, all, thanks
I received a couple of posts encouraging me to go ahead and upgrade

So I'm going to take the plunge... Thanks for giving me courage...
