iBook in Nat'l Geographic

2002-12-14 Thread Ross Cottrell
Just got the latest copy of National Geographic. On page 25, in a
story about Hawaiian culture, there is a teacher and a child sitting
at a table in the dark using an iBook. The Apple logo is shining and
they have candles on the table. Apple couldn't ask for better
advertising.

Re: Firewire2Go ??

2002-10-30 Thread ross cottrell

Hi, All.

Undergoing a frantic effort to get my Cardbus Firewire2Go card to
work with my Lombard Powerbook. In both OS 9.2 and X.2 my card is
'seen' by Apple System Profiler, but I can't mount my LaCie
pocketdrive through it, even though it's independently powered. The
same drive works fine hooked up to my G4's built-in firewire port.
I've applied Newer's special 'enabler' patch (v1.01) for OS 9 (and
removed Apple's cardbus enabler extension, as indicated by NewerTech
faq), but it still doesn't want to mount in 9.2 Likewise, wondering
if anyone's gotten the card to work in OS X Jaguar. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. TIA.

Rick
--
Rick,

I've heard nothing specific regarding problems with the card in OS X.2 from
any site, this one included. My firewire to go card works if I'm
importing/exporting DV, but does not see my firewire hard drive-which is new
and has the latest firmware. I'm using a Wallstreet II 300.

I'm going to buy a new firewire card and ebay the Newer card. I need a
multiport card anyway.

Travelstar 40 gnx

2002-10-27 Thread Ross Cottrell
I posted this to Apple's forums today:

I just put a Travelstar 40 gnx in my 300 mhz 'book. Installed
Jaguar.1 and OS 9.1 without incident.
Put the replaced 20 gb Hitachi in an OWC Firewire Express enclosure.
I have a Newer Firewire to go pc card that has always worked.

The FW drive only mounts in OS 9.1. It does not mount OS X.2.1.

When I try to boot into X with the FW drive connected, X hangs while
waiting for local drives. If I unplug the drive, X finishes booting.

If I try to connect the FW drive after X is booted, I get an error:
You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can
read. To use the unreadable volumes, click Initialize. To continue
with the disk inserted, click Ignore. I've been ignoring it.

I should mention that I can import DV into iMovie X without problem.
So the Firewire card works in X.
I've been able to read and write to the FW drive when booted into 9,
so the FW drive definitely works. I installed the latest firmware
from OWC too.

Any ideas anyone? Should I wipe the drive and start over? (I posted
a version of this issue here about a week ago.)

Thanks,

Ross Cottrell

While under warrenty I replaced the power manager once, and the previous
owner also did once. At least that is the diagnosis on the repair slip both
times.

Now its doing it again. Won't wake from sleep. Have to pull the battery, the
other drive drive bay, and unplug from AC.

I do the pwer reset key combination ( shift, fn, cntrl, power on) and then
lock in the battery and whatever is in the other bay and it will power back
up Sometimes I have to do it a several times, but it eventually powers
up.

Most times when powered off I just get a buzzing when I hit the power on
button, and have to go through the same routine I just destribed for
failure to wake from sleep.

What I want to know is:
Power Manager, What is it, Is it user replaceable, How much for the parts,

And are Wallstreets famous for burning out power managers, like they are
famous for weak hinges on the monitor lid?

Had the same problem once on my 300 mhz Wallstreet. The guy at
pbparts.com had me disconnect the keyboard. I did, and the machine
started right up. Diagnosis: bad keyboard.

Strange thing was, pbparts sent me a bad keyboard which I returned
after much whining--they didn't want to give me my money back, they
wanted me to take a credit. But I had put my original keyboard back
on and the startup problem was no longer present. Strange, but I
haven't had a problem since. I've never replaced the power manager
either. But disconnecting the keyboard definitely allowed my
Wallstreet to startup when I thought it was dead.

Prior to disconnecting the keyboard, I tried resetting the open
firmware per Apple support. This did not solve my problem though.

It may not be worth it. If you pick up a 400 mhz Pismo for

Re: [PB]Entourage

2002-09-19 Thread Ross Cottrell

Just a question. Is this easily corrupted in your own experience, or via
word-of-mouth from others? I've been using Entourage for about a year and a
half, and I've never lost and email, and any corruption I've had was
easily fixed with a database rebuild. I haven't counted recently, but I have
well within 5 digits of email in all my trays combinde. (well over 10,000
emails). I've never had a corrupted database--only bloated. I've certainly
never been forced to rebuild the database because I was unable to open it,
and I've never lost an email.

For the record, Claris Emailer 2 also used the single database approach,
which is where Entourage gets its scheme. The same people who wrote Emailer
wrote Entourage and OE.

As I mentioned, I'm a long time Eudora user; I'd never trust my
personal data to the clowns in redmond (personal agitation), and I
too have 5 digits worth of emails, but who's counting. So yes, I
learned of the corrupt database problems from others who have posted
on lists and newsgroups. Why do you find it acceptable to have to
routinely rebuild a bloated database file? I don't see why I should
have to put up with that nonsense. It just seems illogical to put
all of your eggs in one bloated basket. I've used Lookout, Lookout
Express and Entrailage and they have nice UIs I suppose, but the data
storage scheme is not simple enough.

And yes, I know that the lead Emailer developer now works for the
evil empire, that's common knowledge. I never liked Emailer much
either.

I've worked in the software industry in Seattle as a test engineer
and systems analyst so I do have some experience with most email
apps. For IMAP, Netscape is better than Eudora, but I am talking
about POP3 since that is what I use at home. At work we use Netscape
Messenger on XP, NT, 95 and OS/2 boxes and it seems to work well
enough. But Eudora's filtering is far superior to Netscape's, and
that is another reason I've stuck with Eudora. I like Powermail's
UI and filtering the best, and would switch to it in a flash, but no
way am I using an app that puts my mail in a database file.

Mozilla? Yeah, it's the best browser I've ever used. I've trashed
Omniweb, IE, Netscape, Opera and iCab since Mozilla got stable enough
to use. But I don't have a need for Mozilla mail.

Eudora stores my email in plain text files, easily backed up, easily
moved and easily read with TextEdit. Simple and elegant, no rebuilds
necessary and no un-sightly bloating. It's a design that I
appreciate more and more with each passing, trouble and
maintenance-free year.

The problem lies not with the Entourage Conduit, but with the Palm=20
Desktop 4. That is only supported with real Palm branded palm=20
devices. There is a work around, but not having a Handspring, I don't=20
remember what it was.

I've been syncing my Visor Plat with Palm DT4 on OSX for a couple of months
now. It is slow, but it works. Handspring does not support this, but that
doesn't mean it doesn't work. Sometimes it is so slow that I have to kill it
though.

Of course, I don't use Entrailage, which is bloated and stores all of your
mail on one database file, which is easily corrupted. Powermail does the same
thing- dumb.

I've used Eudora for years and never lost a single byte after transfering
mailbox files from one hard drive to another several times over the years. It
never crashes. It may not be the most user friendly, but it is the most
reliable email client ever made, IMHO. I gladly paid the $40 to register it.

Palm desktop sucks, but it works, and I've never lost data with it either.
Anyway, just ranting I guess. Can't wait for iSync and a usable iCal build.

Re: OS Question for Wallstreet

2002-09-08 Thread Ross Cottrell

You're going to like the Wallstreet 300. It runs Jaguar acceptably
IMHO. First thing you should do is lose the 8 gb factory drive. It
is a loser. You can't rip MP3s with it due to a longstanding and
never fixed bug. New 40 gb IBM drives are around $165 these days.
I've got a 300 mhz Wallstreet and I've been running OS X since the
public beta was released. I have a 20 gig Hitachi drive partitioned
into 5 parts with OS X on the first. It's 2.55 gigs in size and I
have 423 mb free. I easily installed Jaguar with no troubles
whatsoever. Mind you, the next time I partition, I'm giving X a
lot more space. At least 4 gb. But for now, all is fine.

I've got 9.2.2 on the second part and it's 1.5 gigs in size, with
790 mbs free.
You are right about 9.1, never had sleep of death with it.
Never have sleep of death with OS X ever, and I had it constantly with 9.2x.
But with Jaguar, who cares.

The key to a lean OS X install is to not install all of the
localization (foreign lang.) packages and irrelevant printer drivers.
That was the difference between installing Jaguar for me, and having
to format the drive and start over from scratch.

The reason I can have a relatively small X partition is because I
keep all of my applications and data files (Word proc/sprd sheet,
email, digital photos, mp3, DV etc) on the other 3 partitions.

It can be done. You won't damage it. The directions with photos are at

I'm confused. Is it possible to install a UIJDA330 CDRW drive into a

There are no reports at xlr8yourmac about Wallstreet mods, only

Has anyone here actually put one in a Wallstreet? Any first hand
