powerbook/ibook reccomendation?

2004-06-18 Thread Andrew King
Hello list
I've been commissioned to find a MAC powerbook or ibook for my sister.
She's an artist and needs a little more power than the 520 powerbook
for word processing, spread sheets, photo editing and e-mail/web browsing.
I had been thinking an ibook might provide more horsepower per doller.
She's not inclined to poke around inside so i figured that if I got a
decent ibook she wouldn't need to upgrade it.
However a little looking around Low End Mac suggests that most (all?)
ibooks come without PC card slots which I am very fond of.
So I'm back to considering an older powerbook.
I'd like to be able boot to OS 9, I think that's what's on her
computers at work (she's not sure).
CD drive is required, CD burner would be nice but could be external.
Floppy drive would be nice, could be external.
Battery life is not a huge issue, this will be used as a desktop
computer most of the time.
She has a dial up ISP so built in ethernet or wireless is not
particularly useful.
Reliability is probably more important than performance, she's in Santa
Barbara CA and I'm in Michigan so I can't easily pop over and swap out
parts.
Any thoughts? Recomended vendors?

Thanks
Andrew in Ann Arbor

Re: Lombard cache failure symptoms?

2003-09-05 Thread Andrew King
I have a Lombard 400 and have been following the thread on Lombard cache
failures.
I checked the URL http://www.pbzone.com/archive/1002_1thru7.shtml
but still have 2 questions:

Does the failure always produce the message that reads The built-in memory
test has detected a problem with cache memory?
What percentage of Lombards has had this problem to date (is it a case
of if or when?).

VCD player for Lombard 400 MHz OS 9.2.2 ??

2003-09-01 Thread Andrew King
A friend just scanned some old home movies into his computer and made
some VCDs for me.
I can play them on my Lombard (400 MHz OS 9.2.2 ) with Apple Video
Player (version 1.7.3) but Quicktime (version 5.0.2) and Apple DVD
player (version 1.3) don't seem to see them.
Is there a better VCD player out there?
If not is there something I should be doing differently?
I should also be investigating player software for my Mom's Wallstreet
(255 Mhz OS 9.2.2) and my brother's Beige desktop (OS 8.6).
I'm also going to try and connect to the TV, my set has S-video inputs
so I'm guessing I need an S-video cable to the TV and a sound cable to
my stereo.

Re: loc-tite

2003-08-31 Thread Andrew King
Re;if you move your book around very much, you may also want a tube of
(loc-tite blue) so as to secure the screws from loss,do not use the
red for this.
Be careful with loctite around plastic, I was a little too generous with
a screw going into a metal insert in a plastic mirror.
After about a month the plastic turned to powder and the insert pulled out.
Apply it very sparingly (use a toothpick) and only use it for metal to
metal connections.

Re: netscape options, streamlined installation

2003-08-24 Thread Andrew King

Subject: Re: Update Netscape for Pismo?
From: Steve Kidd sjkidd(at)cablelan.net
Netscape 7 is not bad when it's running, but I find it really slow to
load up. By far, I prefer Mozilla - I think 1.2.1 is the last available
build for OS 9. It's fast, has tabbed browsing, and doesn't go through
all that Netscape/AOL gobbledygook on first load.

I'm a big fan of Sillydog's streamline netscape installers.
They are required to include all the AOL and Netscape gobbledygook but
the default is off so the junk doesn't install unless you request it.
Regrettably they only have version 6.2.2 streamline for MAC.
I'm using version 7.02 streamline on an obsolete (WIN98 233 Mhz) PC and
it's much better than the full Netscape install.
Check out http://sillydog.org/narchive/ for more options, they have
all the way back to 4.08 for system 7.5.

reccomendation, replacement for 1400?

2003-08-18 Thread Andrew King
Hello all
My Dad's talking about replacing his 1400 (he's actually got 2 of them).
He does E-mail (prefers Eudora), web browsing, text editing and light
calculations (circuit design, kalidograph).
He travels a lot so small/light is good.
He's contemplating a I-book, I'm inclined to recommend a powerbook.
I've introduced him to using PC cards to transfer data, does the I-book
have a card slot?
I'd point him towards a Lombard (SCSSI port would let him connect to the
1400s) or Pismo. He could also get a super disk to read and write
floppy disks.
What about the 12 powerbook? I'm assuming it's smaller/lighter than the
 Pismo/Lombard.
Any thoughts?
Any suggestions for vendors?
I'm recommending OS 9.2.2, any reason for a beginner non-power user to
go to OS X?

Thanks

Yes, but that is MacOS X only. I'm running 9.1 on my Wallstreet.
Michelle
I had a Lucent Wavelan Silver card working in my Wallstreet under OS
9.2.2 using Airport PC Card extension 1.3.2.
I also have Airport AP 1.3.2 and Airport AP Support 1.3.2 extensions
enabled.
The card is part number PC24E-H-FC serial number 00UT28442879.
The Wallstreet was a 266 Mhz model.

The card also works in my new Lombard 400 Mhz with the same extensions.
Good luck

AOL taking over PPP?I

2003-07-11 Thread Andrew King
Invoking the one removed principal...
My dad is having trouble with PPP on his powerbook 1400 OS 8.1).
PPP keeps resetting itself to AOL (and he doesn't have an AOL account).
It won't let him create a new configuration or
I'm trying to trouble shoot it from 800 miles away and I just wanted to
ask if there is any possibility that AOL is surreptitiously re-setting
PPP to AOL? I've heard of AOL inhibiting the installation of competing
software on Windows machines but never on Macs.
More likely it's something more basic, we just had a short discussion
about the functions of control panels, extensions and preferences so
maybe that will do it.

Thanks...

transferring files to Wintel over home network?

2003-06-27 Thread Andrew King
Hello all
I want to transfer some files from my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) to my Thinkpad
560X (WIN98) via my home network (Linksys BEFW11SF wireless).
I can plug both machines into ethernet ports so I don't have to get a
second wireless card.
I've had to tinker with the wintel boxes to get them to see each other
on the network, how can I make them visible to the Lombard (or vice-versa)?

Thanks

Teardown PDF for Lombard?

2003-06-25 Thread Andrew King
From: Jim Eddy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The I/O door on my Lombard has detached from its springs so that it
is loose and does not completely close.

I had the same problem. I couldn't work out any way short of
disassembling the machine, which is what I did. Fortunately I had the
teardown pdf to follow.

Jim
Could I trouble you for a copy of the Lombard teardown PDF?
I haven't had any reason to get inside my new Lombard but I expect it'll
happen someday, most likely when I can't get to any of the disassembly
sites I've got bookmarked.

Thanks

printing from USB (Lombard, OS 9.2.2) to serial (CanonBJC4550)

2003-06-24 Thread Andrew King
Hello all
I'm just settling in with my new Lombard (400 Mhz, OS 9.2.2) and am
starting to think about printing.
Is there a USB to Serial converter that I can plug into the back?
Would such a converter cost more than a new USB printer?

I've also got a internal VST superdisk for floppy disks but have noticed
that the drive clicks and whirs when I start up the computer (with no
floppy inside). Is this normal?
Was there ever an Apple internal floppy or was the Wallstreet the last
powerbook to have that option?

MacAlly USB 1.0 card in Powerbook 1400?

2003-06-22 Thread Andrew King
Hello all.
I'm headed out to my Dad's cabin in Maine in about a week and was
thinking of giving him my old MacAlly USB 1.0 card (part number UH276) to
plug into his 1400 (OS 8.6).
The MaCally USB adapter card support V 1.4.1 readme says the card
works with a PowerPC based Macintosh computer with PCI or Cardbus slots
I checked the LowEndMac site and found that the 1400 is not Cardbus
compliant but am not sure if it is PCI compatible.
Will the card work with the 1400?
Can I use the same extensions as my old Wallstreet (USB adapter card
support V 1.4.1) or do I need different ones for the 1400?

Thanks

Re: disassembly tip, egg cartons hold screws

2003-06-12 Thread Andrew King
lots of techs also use paper cups in mostly the same way, but they
stack the paper cups as they go.
Gearheads like egg cartons, screws go in the little cups, larger parts
go in the lid. I start at one end and fill the cups in order then
reverse the sequence on reassembly.
The cardboard cartons are preferred since the cardboard soaks up the oil
(only significant if you have one of the early steam powered powerbooks).

Got my Lombard 400 Mhz, need IR port cover and floppy drive

2003-06-06 Thread Andrew King
Glad tidings!
I just got a 400 Mhz Lombard with DVD yet.
I needed the sellers guidance but I found the Apple DVD player and was
able to see a little of a Bond DVD. Now to hunt up a S-video cable and
see what it looks like on the larger screen.
The DVD drive is a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8171 rev 080E , is this the
troublesome one? I have noticed that sometimes it won't recognize a CD
or DVD. It also seems to start up periodically and move the heads. Is it
supposed to be doing this?
It's got 128 MB RAM, I'm thinking it would be worth upping that for OS
9.2, how much makes sense? Any preferred vendors?
I need to get a expansion bay floppy, is the VST superdisk the best option?
I'm also moving up the the keyprints on the screen problem, I can't see
them when the screen is on, should I worry about them? Are they going to
get worse?
Lastly this machine came without the rubber feet and the IR port window.
Any tips on sources? I've located a bottom case on E-bay that I could
get the parts off, we'll see how cheap it goes.

Thanks to all for sage advice...
