Re: WiFi ISP
Kristina, I, of course, do not know where out here in a soon to be cornfield is. The sort of WiFi connection I have called Airlink tends to be, I think, a kind mom-pop operation. Airlink doesn't advertise. Making it gradually on word of mouth in a mountainous area with pockets of residences unreachable by cable or dsl. I suggest you call your local or most local computer store or service center/vendor or your electronics supply shop. They would know if anyone is hacking a wifi system. I was thinking of selling the G3 Pismo and put the funds towards the Mac Mini, but before I put the thing on eBay, I was wondering how much I should expect for it. The machine itself is in great condition, with no scratches on the screen or the case, it has a BlueChip G3/900MHz upgrade CPU, 1Gb RAM, AirPort. The only things that are up with it are the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, and the DVD/CDRW drive is broken. Re: Wallstreet Hard Drive Recommendations
Very interesting recommendations re: Wallstreet HD. Thank you Ben. I didn't know about the buffer and wonder if bigger than 8MB are available. Also, any reason not to go to 7200rpm? You'll need an ATA-5 drive, which limits things a bit -- I'd go for a relatively low-capacity drive (say 40GB) at 5400rpm, preferably with an 8MB buffer. A large buffer is good, because it reduces the amount of mechanical work a drive has to do, so you'll get higher access speeds and a longer battery life, and a 5400rpm drive is good (even though it reduces battery life) because it is noticeably faster than the 4200rpm drives that come standard with most laptops. Due to the age of the machine, you probably won't be using it for video editing, gaming, or anything else that's too space-hungry (unless you have a large music collection), so the 40GB should be ample. HotRod ing Wallstreet
I'm getting to appreciate the Wallstreet II OS 9.1 and some of the upgrade options. It occurs to me that upgrading really needs to be guided by what what wants to do. Basically, my 3400 is find for almost everything I want to do, except receiving real time video streaming via RealPlayer. My church broadcasts regularly and the Wallstreet is way better for this. So, I'm wondering if there are specific suggestions for upgrading the key elements that will enhance this function. The motherboard upgrade? More RAM? I wonder if I could get a scaled down 9.1 and RealPlayer on a RAMdisk? All suggestions are appreciated. Cliff -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... WS upgrades (was CD-RW for Wallstreet?)
Really interesting stuff in reference to the CD-RW ? Raised more questions. I cannot seem to connect to PowerLogix have they folded? If not, what is the relative difference between the PowerLogix and Sonnet Tech ugrade boards? Sonnet offers their 500MHz upgrades in G4 and G3 units: Does this mean you can upgrade a G3 WS to a G4? What would be the advantage to that? The MCE stuff also looks interesting. I'll have to dig a little deeper there. As always. Thanks. Cliff -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet no-longer-dead Final
Thanks for everyone's help. Basically I have a working 233 MHz Wallstreet with 288M RAM when I get and install replacement PCMCIA cage from Ebay and a replacement CD module from LEM Swap I should be in pretty good shape. I think I'll consider upgrading the HD as well Turning on AppleTalk Ethernet solved the connection problem (though I haven't tried at home yet). Running OS 9.1 Any reason to go to 9.2? All in all potentially a neat machine, but at first blush I like my 3400 better. Thanks again to everyone. What a remarkable resource these lists are! Walstreet not-so-dead update 2
OK, I managed to get 9.1 installed. The power adapter definitely seems finicky. sometimes the battery lights come on, sometimes not. The CD drive seems faulty, very noisy in any case. Now running 9.1 it seems to boot and while I haven't tried to run very many apps, it seems to work. I must say though in general this Wallstreet seems a little doggey in comparison to my 3400 The PCMCIA cage seems faulty. Quite difficult to get a card to seat properly. this might be the reason that even though DHCP gives me all the numbers browsers and e-mail clients do not connect. Wallstreet not-so-dead update
I think I initially had two problems. 1. the HD was so hopelessly fragmented that it was seriously bogging, stalling freezing. 2. the battery is essentially dead and the power adapter plug dirty. I may not have been getting a good connections so eventually I was losing power and would have to wait. I don't know. Anyway, I'm now getting consistent boots from disk and was able to initialize the HD from Disk Set Up. Start up, however, is slow and noisy. I'm thinking maybe the CD drive is cranky. I see DVD drives on E-bay. Presumably they run CDs too. but are they worth the premium? or is DVD standard Wallstreet. So, I boot from a 9.2 install disk but cannot install because I get a dialogue telling me Instaler cannot be found or Disk Error depending on which icon I click. Hmmm. Guess I'll have to try my 9.1 installer. I did zap the PRAM as suggested but was unable to rest NVRAM as directed since the PB goes directly to disk with nothing on the HD. Maybe that shouldn't matter but Cmd-Opt-O-F didn't seem to do anything (did I hold it long enough?) I didn't know where or was never prompted to type reset-nvram and reset-all Any experience with PowerBook Medic.com Service Manuals. Reasonable at $9.95 Thanks for all the help. Re: Wallstreet Dead
Very interesting and useful advise. The first pattern I've noticed is that I can boot from an installer disc or Tech Tools but if something goes wrong and it freezes or I shut down to switch CDs then I cannot reboot again until after the PB has rested unplugged for a number of hours, say overnight. So I booted from Tech Tools and ran the Analysis. It reported only minor repairs required. Then I tried to Optimize (HD was very fragmented) but received dialog informing me of insufficient free space to Optimize a file. Close TT, delete a folder from the HD Try to Optimize again. Another dialog same information for an index file Close TT and try to open Sherlock to find index file Computer freezes. The only way I could get out of the freeze was to unplug and pull the battery. Then, unable boot from CD. Hear Start Up chime and then nothing. Command + Control +Power. Press C and hold it down. Is ineffective. If the PB boots it boots only from the CD without prompting shift | fn | ctrl | power key Works to shut down. At least it does the humm -whirr then when I press the power button I get the start up chime but that's all (when it is in it's uncoooperative mood) Reset is standard three fingered salute, Apple-Control-Power. Sometimes gives me a chime , but that's all. I'd start with booting off the OS 9 CD, formatting the HD then do an install. I think I'll try this next time it boots. I have 9.2 and 9.1 options. Is one preferred on the Wallstreet over the other? Thank you. Cliff -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet Dead
Greetings. I'm new to this list migrating from the PowerBooks list. I've been given a Wallstreet Family M4753 1998 233MHz-512K/32MB/2GB HD/4MB vieo/CD/Modem It's dead. First I wonder if the above numbers verify that it is the VersionII? Secondly, I'll describe it's symptoms in solicitation of advise. When I received the PB it contained a OS9 disc in the CD drive and it booted from the CD without my prompting. I was able to Trash the previous owners files but not run any programs. I got a dialog box that said some program was missing. I was and have never been able to shut it down (unable to find a reset button as on my 3400) I have to pull out the battery and unplug it. I tried booting from my PCMCIA drive but it froze in mid boot. I tried booting from a Tech Tools Disc and I get the start up sound but now the screen stays black and nothing. Once I hear the CD spinning. BAck to the OS9 disc trying the C key or OpenA-Option-Shift-Delete . Nothing The one time I did get it booted the HD rattled some but not terribly. Any and all advise is appreciated. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
