time (best to spray it on the cloth first rather than on the screen).

I even still have one of the two supplied cotton cloths. I would
still have the other one but I used it to clean a TV (CRT) screen and
it picked up a huge amount of very fine blackish dirt (kind of like
what gets deposited on or near a negative ion generator).

Re: Recommended external DVD burner?

2005-11-07 Thread David Brostoff
MacWorld had reviews of 16X drives earlier this
year (you can google it or search directly on
macworld.com). The LaCie D2 16X DVD±RW was their
pick for value (Plextor had a faster, though much
more expensive drive).

Based on MacWorld and other sources, I bought the
LaCie and have been very satisfied. The unit is
very solidly built. I used Pricegrabber.com as a
convenient way of finding a low price.

For media, I recommend Taiyo Yuden 8X (or 16X,
but only for non-critical data; and remember that
8X DVD is about 6 times faster than 8X CD) on
Rima.com.

What I should have said was that RBrowser allows simultaneous

After some research, I tried RBrowser. The only downside to the free

will do FTP only (not Secure FTP, etc.), although for most users this
is probably sufficient.

The upside is that it is troublefree, much faster than Fetch

That's interesting. I could understand them not covering the drive,

if that could be challenged under the Magnuson-Moss act. That one

warranty claim based on the fact that an aftermarket part is
installed on the car (one that does not have anything to do with
problem being covered under warranty). For example, I replace the
shifter in my car myself, the water pump fails, and the dealer won't
cover the water pump failure even though it's covered under warranty.

I agree with you, Counselor, but the court (Apple) told me that if
they saw the drive was replaced, they would assume that was the cause
of any other problem. That was their rule and there was no reasoning
with them about it.

understand voiding applecare if I replace the drive, but not if an

true if you were to buy your hard drive from Apple? My guess is
probably not.

In my case, Apple told me I could not upgrade the drive, even by an

Thank you for your explanation, although I must say that if I am any
example, unless 6 and 7 are vastly different from 5, I think most
users would have an easy time learning the program: File/New Catalog
(or Command+N) to open a new catalog; drag photos to catalog window;
File>Open Catalog (or Command+O) to open and view a catalog;
double-click an image for an enlarged view. I don't think I have
found a reason to use any other functions.

Of course, I understand that my needs may be very different from
yours. In my business (industrial advertising), we receive photos on
CDs or via FTP. The photos are already labeled. Cataloging them in
Portfolio gives us a convenient way to quickly look over the photos
and see what is available for a particular job without opening each
photo.

When you had a problem creating a new catalog, what did the cause
turn out to be? Did it have anything to do with Portfolio itself?

So far, no new updates from the folks who make it. I'm

I am also a long-time CCC user but have now switched to SuperDuper.

It's as easy (or easier) to use as CCC and has the added advantage of
being much faster when "smart updating" (synching) an already cloned
drive (maybe also when doing the initial clone, but I haven't timed
it). With CCC, it used to take me about 45-50 minutes to synch
roughly 22 GB; with SD it's about 15-20. Support via the online
