Well, it was more ignorance on my part of the entire issue, rather than just
being passive or apathetic. But I am sure MS and Apple would be just as
anxious to protect YOUR property rights as well(?).

(THAT was cheap!)

Anyway, I hear you; thanks for the info!

Software piracy

I don't know about it being an indicator of anyone's honesty or not; what
about situations where individuals are selling their personal laptops after
being
upgraded? Doesn't the act of piracy require some requisite mental state?

Also, doesn't the frequently seen "Buyer must erase drive after reviewing OS"

G3 iBook LCD question

2005-12-09 Thread GalBros
Hi, what is the exchange matrix for LCDs for iBooks, starting with the 500mhz
dual USB on up?

I recently obtained an iBook 500mhz with a busted screen. I was told all of
the non-clamshell G3 iBook LCDs could be used with it, but the 800mhz and
900mhz LCDs would be a slightly different color.

Thank you for the help!

Yes, unfortunately we all have similar stories to share.

Often, while traveling for work, I visit little ($99 complete Pentium
systems!) computer places around AL, TN and MS, I will find Mac stuff at PC
refurbishers, seperated and stored away from the PC stuff in the back of the
store. In
some of the smaller towns, even pre-pentium PC stuff would be displayed
proudly, and G3-G4 Mac stuff is stored away just because the tech there does
not
know how to startup the thing, or the flashing question-mark disk spooks them.

The PC guys will usually say "I know nothing about Macs, just get it out of
here!" I think that, as experts in the PC world, it must frustrate them to no
end that Macs are beyond their realm of comprehension.

Kinda like Dr. McCoy used to react when he attemped to treat Mr. Spock (or

I use IE 5.1 on my classic-laden Wallstreet, and I have no problem with Ebay,

I remember once I had a problem listing an item I was going to sell, but that

Yes, some wireless cards, like Orinoco, that are "Airport compatible" under
Classic are not Airport compatible under OSX. When a friend obtained an OSX
10.2 Wallstreet awhile ago, it would not use my Lucent Orinoco wifi card as an
Airport card, like my 9.2 Wallstreet could.

Also, some cards that are Airport'able under OSX are not under Classic (most
recently I discovered that the Sony/Ericsson GPRS card is one of these).

Any card with the Broadcom chipset (SOME of the cards/adapters by Belkin,
Buffalo [what my friend now uses in his 10.2 WS], Linksys, Sonnet, among
others)
will be seen as an Airport card in OSX 10.2 and up.

Well, a Belkin 802.11b wireless card, f5d6020 will work with Mac OS9 and
10.2-10.4 using (either?) an IOxperts or MacSense driver. If the IOxperts
driver
is the same as what comes with Orinoco cards for Macs (correct me, list?) I
think I have the OS9 version available.

However, isn't the 6020 a non-cardbus card? Sometimes some entities use
"cardbus" and "PCMCIA" interchangeably.

Say, another question: What screen are you using with your Wallstreet? I
think I remember surmizing awhile back that the brightness issue may be because
my
friend has a 12.1" active matrix (not the more common 12.1" passive matrix)

Replacement cd-rom drives can be had for about $20-$30 on Ebay, shipped. You
could opt for a DVD-rom drive for about $10-$20 dollars more, but you'll need
the DVD PC card for the Wallstreet to show DVD movies.

The Wallstreet's design on the cd/dvd module makes swapping in 3rd party
media drives impossible. VST, I think, used to make a cd-rw module for the
Wallstreet, but they are rare and priced accordingly. The last one I saw went
for
$100+ on Ebay.

Forgot to mention: The 1400 has a good keyboard also (I do not THINK it is

solution. Their batteries are expensive and getting hard to find in good

>I have been trying out some various apple laptops,

Hello, I would like to opine on this. I am a writer (legal) as well, and I
surf endlessly on legal sites to research.

While I do have an iBook, I prefer using my ancient Powerbook 5300c or 3400c
for my daily writing, especially when I am out and about. First of all, the
keyboard on these two machines (identical keyboards) are in my opinion the very
best Apple keyboard for typing. The keys have a nice feel to them, and take a
dedicated finger-punch to register, and the spring feel seems just right, for
me at least.

Secondly, both have cheap, cheap ($5-$10) batteries out there that still hold
good charges; the 3400c more so. I can pack my two 3400c li-ion batteries, or
my four 5300c ni-cads, and have productivity at Starbucks or the Waffle House
for 4-5 hours. Also, both can be made to be wireless.

Most importantly, while neither is a lightweight compared to today's moden
Apple laptops, both are pretty ruggedly built, and neither is expensive enough
to worry about getting stolen or broken.

Aha, I see.

The Airport card I retreived from the Base Station (Snow/Dual USB, if that

But if it is somehow otherwise a different card than the ones that are for

Airport cards

2005-11-19 Thread GalBros
Hello, I think it was on this list recently where a lister blew two
motherboards from using a bad Airport card?

I obtained an airport card from a broken (per owner) Airport Base Station. I
installed the airport card in my iBook ; on startup in 10.3, I was given a
message saying I needed to restart the laptop, either by pressing the startup
button for a few seconds, or resetting the laptop. Tried it again, same result.
I
am as sure as can be that I installed it correctly...

Re-installed the Airport card that was already in the iBook, and everything
was fine again.

Do I have a faulty Airport card? Either that, or I'll bet I did something
wrong with the installation of the card...

Thanks,

It should; if you can find the original software -- online or on a disc --
see if a Mac version is offered.

If not, find out the chipset of the card. Most (if not all) 802.11b cards
that can be used by Airport are Orinoco chipset cards, so some maker's orinoco
software should work. I am not sure Airport can work on any OS prior to 9.x,
but
I may be mistaken.

slow startup on ibook G3 600mhz

2005-10-29 Thread GalBros
Hi, I am having an issue with my 600mhz iBook G3.

I week ago I installed OSX.1 on it, and had no problems with it.

Today I acquired a Airport card for it. I installed it, and started up the
ibook. All of a sudden, the startup process was s-l-o-w-e-r than I ever
remember; the little cartwheel would spin for what seemed like ages...

Finally, after about 10-15 minutes, all that appeared was (in the upper right
hand corner) the time/date display, the battery level and a little wireless
indicator; no desktop icons, no desktop background. Choosing any of the
mentioned items had no reponse. All I could do was to press the start button to
shut
the machine down.

Removed the Airport card, and the same thing occurred. long startup resulting
in just the three icons in the upper right hand corner.

What did I do wrong? I know the Airport card works, as I am using it right
now in a clamshell. And the machine started up perfectly several times last
week, after I installed 10.1.

Well that explains that. Now I only need to find out how to take apart my
ibook. I have exerience with G3 Powerbooks lombard, pismo and wallstreet, but
not
ibooks. Any offlist help would be appreciated.

Thanks to all for the help, Ivy

Basic iBook g3 questions

2005-10-22 Thread GalBros
Hi,

I recently acquired my first ibook, a "late 2001" 600mhz G3 model.

When I plug the laptop in, sometimes the lamp around the AC port is amber,
and sometimes it is green. Also, when I jiggle the portion of the adapter where
it plugs into the laptop, it goes from green to amber while still plugged in.

What do the colors mean, and is it supposed to change color when jiggled
while plugged in?

Also, I am interested in (someday) replacing the dvd drive in it with a
slot-loading cd-rw unit; can someone assist me with this offlist?

Thanks, Ivy F.

Yes. Any of the active matrix TFT LCDs -- the 12" TFT (not the passive 12"
FSTN) the 13" and the 14"-- can work with any Wallstreet.

The only LCD issue with Wallstreets I have ever noticed is that a 12" FSTN
screen cannot work with a Series II (233/512,266,300) mobo.

What size LCD screen do you have? The 13" LCDs have been known to have some
issues that sound similar.

Re: Lombard issues

2005-10-10 Thread GalBros
Sorry to hear about your problems with your Lombard.

>From my experiences with Lombards (I have a 400mhz) the feeezing and
non-booting could be from a faulty processor.

Is there some kind of pattern to the non-functioning? When it cannot boot at
all; is that only after it crashes after it starts up & freezes?

It sounds like you're thinking it could be the OS; I think it may be a faulty
processor card, and/or maybe an overheating one. Would you happen to have /
access to an extra Lombard processor?
