Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-17 Thread Karen Thompson
My Mom, who has been using computers since the TRS 80 (Trash 80 as they were
affectionately called) turned 82 last week. I finally convinced her last
November to buy a Mac. She got a 20" iMac and LOVES it! No viruses, no
worms, no FDSIK, installing/reinstalling and general malaise of the Windoze
computer.

I get so tired of PC people being so negative and against Macs. They haven't
even tried them. I started out on a Commodore 64, then on to a Tandy SX 1000
and from there a Gateway Pentium. Then I discovered Macs and don't plan to
ever go back.

Maybe a bumper sticker or something.

Stamp out crime in education. Open your mind!

Re: $50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-16 Thread Karen Thompson
I think it is disgusting when students are not given the opportunity to
explore different operating systems. And yes, it is the IT staff that have
no imagination or inclination to learn another OS. They are biased and just
plain lazy. I'm sure there are some out there who would jump at the
opportunity to learn something other than Windoze.

What is definitely puzzling to me is the Mac systems were taken out of
graphic design labs. The college offers an AA in communication arts. In the
real world about 85% of design studios and print shops use Mac systems. How
does that prepare the student for the industry? It doesn't. Of course, when
I went to college, there were no computers. We did everything by hand,
including lettering. The good old days of paste-up with mylar, wax and Xacto
knives. And then there were the Vari-typer machines that preceeded our
modern computers for typesetting. I much prefer our technology of today but
wish those who don't do the work, don't make the decisions of the tools
professionals use.

As for that B&W computer, talk to the lab personnel. Maybe you can make a
deal and free up that space for yet another Windoze machine.

I wish I could say I was a dumpster diver and got some of those Macs, but
alas, it hit the local news before we knew what was happening. But now I'm
keeping a sharp eye as I understand the Windoze systems have won out and
next fiscal year the Macs will be history. (They have already replaced the

Up until recently, the systems were changed out every two years so we were

Not even OS upgrades.

Only in America! It's a sad commentary on money, greed and conspicuous
consumption in this country. I think you are right Michelle, some of these
will definitely end up on eBay. Why didn't they just donate to the Christina
Foundation or another charitable org and take the write off? Sometimes I
wonder about the administrative brains (or not) in education after years
working for a community college with no fiscal responsibility. Of course at
the college I worked for, they just put Macs in the dumpster. Go figure!

$50 iBooks @ UVA

2005-08-16 Thread Karen Thompson
I heard on the news this afternoon there was a stampede at UVA and people
got hurt waiting in line to buy a $50 iBook. Police had to be brought in to
quiet the crowd. Other people were talking around me so couldn't hear why it
started. Anyone know? Anyone out there actually go?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Re: real estate situation

2005-07-06 Thread Karen Thompson
Claire,

I got to thinking again about your dilemma and did a search and came up with
the following:

Virtual PC for Real Estate Use?
Can I use an Apple 14 iBook 1.33 GHz with 768MB RAM as my Real Estate
Platform? In my case (California) I needed to work with two key Windows
based programs. Let me call them WinForms and Paragon, the MLS search
capability via Internet Explorer. I knew I would need Virtual PC to handle
WinForms and it turned out to be mandatory for Paragon, too. WinForms
provided no problems from the beginning, but Paragon was a long struggle.
Yesterday was a break-through and it is working like a champ. I get instant
results from even the most complicated search. The major things I had to do
were, upgrade to VPC 7.0.1 and get the "exact" configuration of IE
instructions from Paragon. The results are spectacular.

You might want to read the bio for Peggy Madsen at the following url and
possibly contact her and get advice.
http://www.real-estate-rockies.com/profiles.html

Another thing you could try is contacting your local and state board of
Realtors and the MLS in your area. They may know of a Realtor who does use a
Mac.

Re: real estate situation

2005-07-05 Thread Karen Thompson
Claire,

Having been a Realtor in a former life, I think you may be hitting a brick
wall. I think the IT person is trying to nicely tell you he/she doesn't want
any parts of your Mac, Virtual PC or anything Steve Jobs. Most states and
individual counties can use varying brands of software and they may or may
not work with VPC.

If there is a Windoze network involved the process gets uglier. I just
recently left an institution of higher learner where I was a graphic
designer. The design studio consisted of all macs and when IT had to come
over to do something to resolve server issues all they did was moan and
graon. They HATE Mac users. I have just learned that in the coming FY06 all
Macs will be removed from the campus. They even have a communication arts
program and they won't be serving the students for entry into the "real
world."

You might want to look for one of those Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco or
Sam's Club laptops and make your life easier because you won't need computer
headaches starting out as a Realtor. My hat is off to you as it is one hard
profession.

Good Luck!

Re: Automatic Network Connection.

2005-06-20 Thread Karen Thompson
Laurent,

Your post didn't get unnoticed. I was busy yesterday with a design job and
didn't get back to the network connection issue.

Per the OSX Hint

"10.4: Reclaim 'Automatic' AirPort network selection
Thu, Jun 16 '05 at 09:07AM
from: mikerose

For those of us (foolhardily?) brave enough to upgrade to Tiger via Archive
& Install, one of the annoying consequences can be the inability to select
anything other than "A specific network" in the Network settings panel to
join by default. The new "Preferred Networks" setting is also AWOL. (Another
annoying consequence of an Archive & Install: Volume Logic doesn't move to
the new installation ... drat!)

While this hint discusses general tips for cleaning out the Airport
known/preferred network list, the solution for this problem is much simpler:
delete and recreate the network locations that use Airport (Location menu ->
Edit Locations... -> Delete). Voila! The Automatic & Preferred Network
choices now show up."

The only airport location I could find was Automatic and I couldn't delete
it. I ended up going to Library/Preferences/ and deleted the file
com.apple.networkconfig.plist. So far, I still have a connection.

Thanks to all with suggestion.

Re: Automatic Network Connection.

2005-06-17 Thread Karen Thompson
Hello all,

I'm having the very same problem on my PowerBook G4 17". I either have to
log out, shut down or go to Network preferences and do diagnostics to get it
working again. It's really wonky and I'm never sure which of these methods
will fix the problem. A real annoyance. The G3 iBook and the G4 Sawtooth are
both running OX 10.3.9 on the same Apple Airport network with no problem.
Maybe this is a bug in Tiger.

Can someone help us?

Thanks.

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-07 Thread Karen Thompson
Hello,

I have finally had a successful install on my PowerBook 17" 1GHz with 1 Gig
of ram. I initially tried the update and when I rebooted everything was
slower than molasses trying to go uphill. System Profiler and Safari would
not even launch. I then did a reinstall, same problem. I then reinstalled OS
10.3.9 (not a good idea according to Apple) and still problems.

Today I decided to bite the bullet and erase and install and now everything
is fine. I had backed up all data and software so should not be a problem
now.
