Re: Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-18 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
You are spending money like buying a Ti to repair a Lombard - WHY ?
There is no PMU board on a Lombard - so what is being replaced/repaired ?
Even if you are sending it away, take yer HD out - really easy in a Lombard

A: I like the Lombard/Pismo form factor much better than the TiBook
form factor. Also, the Lombard, if I spread the upgrades out over a
long enough time, it'll pay for itself in productivity. Plus, the
Lombard is much easier to upgrade...

Sorry in my attempt at brevity I managed to lose all coherence - blame the
ale !

I was trying to say, why pay that much for a repair - you could buy a couple
of complete ones for that price ?!!

B: I had no clue that there was no PMU on the Lombard. Thanks for telling me.

Well, there is no PMU board, there is a power board under the trackpad, so I
guess it is that one, a pretty cheap and easy to replace part.

C: I know how easy it is to remove a HD on a Lombard, and I've
rebuilt a PB 190 from parts, so I know how to do that stuff.

You were concerned about sending the machine away with all your stuff on it,
I was pointing out that it is a 10 second job to remove it on a Lombard,
probably easier than any other Powerbook, so there is no need for that
worry.

Re: accessing mpeg video files on OS X ?

2006-02-17 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
A relative in England has sent me two MPEG files but Quicktime does
 not recognize or play them.
Are there any 3rd party programs that would allow me to view these
videos and be able to convert them to Quicktime or to some format
that I can import into iDVD ?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated,

 Amber

PS - this is the error message I received:

QuickTime cannot open the file: AV02152006_101558-1.mpg
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)

Try VLC ?

Re: Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-17 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I dont know why, but I have had _zero_ luck bringing any third party
WS or lombard batteries back to life. BTI or Newertech.

Well, I called NewerTech and they think it's a bad PMU, but I still
want a second opinion. They did say that they could get approval for
another replacement, if I wanted to, however.

So, are there any other symptoms of a bad PMU other than fried
batteries? I really don't want to ship my machine off, because it's
got all my stuff on it, and it's got a couple of cracks in the lower
case, and one to the left of the LCD on the inside of the lid that I
don't want to stress any more than I have to.

Also, before I forget, does anyone know the keyboard combination to
force the fans to come on, because I suspect that mine has a bad fan,
 as well.

*sighs as he's planning on spending the price of a used TiBook to get
 the Lombard fixed*

Mate

Re: Subscribing to Google Groups *without* a Google Mail account

2006-02-16 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Once you subscribe to the list, you'll have to create an account on
Google with your current email address.

I am considering not moving to Google... I'm starting to resist this
constant request to create new accounts everywhere... I have a two page
list of them now and just keeping track of them all is getting to be a
 pain...
I realize that to a large extent the spammers make this necessary, but
it's also a marketing ploy akin to put your business card in the bowl
and win a prize so we can target you for advertising.

I'm not directing this specifically at the last poster but rather the
barrage of emails about this change.

I really can't see what the issue is.

Any and all google groups you want to join, on any subject are managed from
one place just the same way that any and all yahoo groups or topica groups
etc. are managed.

You log on once and fill in a very short form and give whatever details you
choose to, truthful or not, all you need is ANY email address, a nickname,
and a location and that's it as far as I can see.

You then get an email to verify that you exist and that's it.

That's all it takes.

Then with each list that moves or you want to join, you send the subscribe
email from that email address, you get back an email asking you to confirm
that you really do want to subscribe and you are away ...

At least that's how it all works for me.

Re: Pismo Power Jack

2006-02-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
In addition to have physically incompatible connectors and jacks, the power
requirements for the new PowerBooks are different than the old PowerBook so,
unless you would heavily modify the Audio/Power board, that wouldn't work,
methinks, and could potentially be harmful to your old PowerBook.

Laurent is correct on this one. The G4 PowerBooks use a 65W power
supply, compared to the 45W supply of the G3 series. The voltage is
the same 24V, though. I'd advise keeping on with the YoYo, but that's
 just me.

The early G4s were 45W, as are all the iBooks AFAIK.

Wattage isn't critical here, the adapter which can supply 65W will work fine
with a 45W machine.

Re: on line privacy

2006-02-14 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I'm no expert (and don't work at or for an ISP) but I haven's seen
any kind of ISP-level spam filtering that's acceptable to me. I don't
want even one false positive a day, let alone a week, and I don't
want to have to frequently check for them at an ISP (or domain
 host's) web interface.

I'd rather sort through Mail's Junk folder many times a day and catch
the almost daily legit mail that gets put there.

I agree completely and I've struggled time after time to convince my ISP
that I want the right to opt out of their filtering.

Re: on line privacy

2006-02-14 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Why are you staying with them if they don't give you the choice?

I wouldn't stay with an ISP that forced me to use their filtering any
more than I would with one that forced me to use MSN.

Earthlink is my ISP, and PowWeb.com is my domain host (and it is a
snap to simply turn off all their protection schemes). Otherwise,
 I'd go elsewhere.

Because that is just one part of a package ?

Price, support, reliability etc.

You will struggle to find one in UK that even gives you a choice to opt out,
in my experience many don't even let you sift thru a spam folder.

Re: WallStreet upgrade: enquiries and ruminations

2006-02-08 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Wallstreets and similar machines (Beige G3, for example) have problems
with high density chips, and more particularly high density chips on one
or both sides of the stick. Even low density chips on both sides of the
 stick can be a problem.

Later machines, say, BW and Lombard/Pismos do not have these same issues.

Sorry to be picky, but I think that Lombards do have the same problem but
Pismos are fine.

Re: Powerbook battery

2006-02-08 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I'm trying to help a friend get a powerbook going. it is a 867 mgz 15 inch
that we can't get the battery out of. how does the latch work on the
 battery.

Use a small coin to twist the latch to point the little dot to the
open-padlock position, then you can lift the battery out.

This is not that kind of battery latch. it has a bar that is supposed to
slide to one side and let the battery go but it doesnt work right.

IRRC when you have the machine flipped over it slides fully left to be open,
the battery should pop up a little, if not flip the machine back and it
should drop out.

Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?

2006-02-02 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Should have got me a Pismo, by the look of it. But, well, I have this
WallStreet and it's here to stay, and I intend to use the living hell
out of it. So, yeah . . .

Any idea about how to procure a budget-conscious bootable DVDROM drive
for the WallStreet? I'm being offered one for 80 USD, which somehow
strikes as a ripoff, especially considering that the postage will eat
 up another 30 . . . I don't think I'm ready to spend that much for a
 mere DVDROM; ideas, anyone?

If you already have a (presumably faulty) dvd/cd drive for the
machine, you can remove the drive unit from the carrier (remove the
2 #0 screws on either side of the chassis, apparantly not the two on
the 'top' of the unit, and slide the drive out of the carrier, then
just slide in a new one. i found a compatible laptop ide drive on
 pricewatch.com or on computergeeks.com for around $50.

A friend had a spare slot loading drive that he gave to me... i
swapped the drive with my original DVD-ROM, and now i have a bootable
CD/DVD drive, and CD-R capability. Whoo!

Not on a Wallstreet, which I think is what the OP was asking.

The drive mechanism in a Wallstreet isn't removable from it's casing in the
same way as Lombard/Pismo ones.

DVD drive failure is common for the LG model DVD drives used in
 Pismos.

I get many enquiries for replacement DVD drives, and often they
show the symptom of reading CDs but not DVDs or vice versa.

How do you know the LG model from any of the others?

It tells you in Apple System Profiler, or on the drive caddy it says
DRN-8080.

I saw the connector on the back, and it seemed to be the same

Yup.

Should be a drive set to Master, and if you use a different drive the front

I just finally found my 10.4 DVD-R, and was about to install that
over 10.2, to find out that for some reason, the DVD-ROM drive (the
stock apple one) doesn't seem to read DVD-R discs... or at least, it
 doesn't read DVD-R discs that I've burnt.

Is this a common problem, or am I doing something wrong on my end?

Re: Pismo battery revival?

2006-01-29 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hello,
I had a Pismo battery that showed four green lights when the button
 on the side was pushed.
I let it sit for a few weeks without power and now only one battery
 light blinks green.
Is the battery dead and can I revive it somehow?

The blinking light means it is flat.

Getting to 4 lights doesn't mean that the battery is A1, I have seen many
that claim to fully charge but only last ten minutes under load.

Re: more Lombard display and DVD issues

2006-01-21 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 1) Display is dark (image is there, but no back illumination; also S-video
out works fine to TV). I have ruled out the backlight (replaced a know-good
display assemblywith good backlight) and the inverter. This leaves a
possible fault on the motherboard, as the cables are part of the display
assembly. Does anyone know whereabouts on the motherboard to look for
possible damage (hoping to find visible damage, such a blown capacitor or
so). Or what other bits could be responsible for such behaviour?

Had exactly this on a machine on Friday, bad logic board, weird thing was it
would pop back when the machine warmed.

Couldn't see nay damage on the board so suspected broken track nor connector

 2) This is a 400 MHz with DVD drive. Booting in OS9, system profiler informs
me that DVD decoder is present. However, when I try to play a DVD, I get the
message saying that this computer can't play DVDs. As anyone seen and/or
 solved this?

Playing the DVD in 9 or X ?

Re: Two PBs, one problem...

2006-01-20 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I have two G3 Pbooks: One Lombard, one Pismo. Both have the dreaded won't
start up anymore problem, which appears to be an issue with the mini board
containing the AC plug (female end).

I've seen quite a few vendors selling replacement cards (a little under $40
for the Lombard, nearly $70 for the Pismo), and from the pages at
PBFixit.com it doesn't look to tough for me to hack.

My question is, has anyone else done this kind of surgery on their old
Pbook, and is there anything you'd advise to someone who hasn't done it
 before?

Are you sure the cards are the faulty e.g. obviously damaged or by checking
them against a known good machine ?

Have you tried removing the PRAM battery and the keyboards to see if they'll
boot ?

Re: My Pismo is dead

2006-01-19 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I'll second the suggestion to leave the 'Book plugged in for a week or so
and then see if it'll fire up. I've had several PowerBooks fail to boot
after sitting unused for months. A good long soak in the electron pool
appears to be just the ticket. FYI, I've seen this with Pismo _and_ with

Re: Lombard display lines

2006-01-17 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
There is a thin, magenta (on a white background) line running
vertically through my display, about three inches in from the right
side. It's really annoying, but not critical. However, I'd like to know
what could cause this. The line showed up first when I was watching a
DVD under OS 9, and it hasn't gone away since I rebooted into OS X. I
cleaned the display about two minutes prior to the line showing up, and
a second line has appeared of a red hue, as I type this email. I really
hope the display isn't failing on this machine, but you never can tell.

Sounds like a line of bad pixels. Can be caused by bad cable or VRAM IIRC
but is usually an LCD problem.

Re: Pink Hue on Pismo display

2006-01-16 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Mad Dog Tom and Lisa Peters [EMAIL PROTECTED] have suggested
 that it's a failing backlight.

It is the backlight, you really don't need to worry until it fails,
but when it does you will have serious trouble seeing anything on the
screen. It's sort of like a florescent lamp going bad. Just takes
 longer to warm up.

It is, I've been using one with this symptom in my test rig for about 18
months and it has gradually got worse but is still fine when warmed up.

Replacement second hand LCDs aren't stupidly expensive these days, so
personally I'd hold out until you can't bare it any more and replace it with
one from eBay or wherever.

Re: Airport problem with 10.4.3

I noticed that shortly after the release of 10.4.3, there was an
update for Airport and installed it, but it made no difference.

Also, like other people, I received a message about airport needing
access to my keychain. I thought nothing of it, because it seemed
quite normal, since there was a new version of the Airport software,
 and authorized it.

I believe there is something wrong with the new Airport software and
would like to know if more people are having the same problem.

Re: Wallstreet and Duo

2005-10-28 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hi

Yes the duo adapter will power the wallstreet but i may not charge
the battery at the same time. you might need to sleep the wallstreet
 to charge the battery.

Completely correct.

The same connector is used on 1400, 3400, Wallstreets, Lombards, Pismos,
Clamshells.

It's the same connector but a lower wattage adapter.

Personally I'd advise getting the correct adapter - but the DUO adapter will
tide you over.

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

Does the DVD decoder on the lombard motherboard work under X ?

If you mean the built-in decoder on the 400 MHz models, absolutely. (I
cannot comment on the 300 MHz models).

You may need to use PatchBurn if you have updated your media bay to
 include a CD/DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive.

With the super drives which are in the distributor inventory right now,
mainly the Pioneer DVR-K05 and Panasonic UJ-845S, you will probably have
to use PatchBurn in order to cover all variations of DVD media.

 The built-in decoder works well.

DVD writing is reliable at 2X, usually reliably at 4X, and fails at
greater than 4X, and that failure is on account of the poor grounding
provided within the media bay itself. These same drives will not fail at
any speed if installed as directed, using an 80-wire/40-pin cable.

I thought the DVD DECODER was for reading movies ?

Why does a DVD DECODER impact writing DVDs ?

Re: Wallstreet max HO size?

2005-10-07 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

I've never seen an issue with any drive in any of these machines - what
 problems have you seen ?

Specifically, failure of the drives to properly negotiate down to the
lower AT specification expected, and required by the Lombard and the
 Pismo.

Again, which means what ? It runs slow ? It doesn't work ?

I've changed tens of drives and not seen any problems - is there a symptom
of this problem, does it affect just one or two makes of drives ?

This has been confirmed, and ... except for the most recent Hitachi/IBM
drives, and the Samsung drives, neither of which OWC sell ...
specifically documented in OWC's 2.5 ATA drives for PowerBook site.

Cheers, I'll check that out.

Re: Wallstreet max HO size?

2005-10-07 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Again, which means what ? It runs slow ? It doesn't work ?

The machine will lock up, and fail to get past the flashing icon.

Initializing the drive in another machine (BW, for example) and then
putting that drive in an affected PowerBook won't work as the affected
PowerBook will not auto-negotiate and, therefore, cannot read the boot
code off of the drive and into the FLASH ROM on the motherboard.

This affects certain new world PowerBooks (Lombard, Pismo, and possibly
others), which read the boot code off of the drive and into a FLASH ROM
before proceeding to do the actual Mac OS boot.

The last old world PowerBook (Wallstreet) appears to be OK. I presume
the first G3 (Kanga) is OK, too.

Strangely, the first new world desktop (BW) is OK, but the first few
new world PowerBooks (Lombard and Pismo) are not OK.

Interesting, I'm astonished that in about 50 HD upgrades to Lombards, Pismos
and later with drives 20GB and larger that I've never seen this issue.

Both makes of drives and model within make.

OW has documented those which they sell which won't work with Lombard and
 Pismo machines.

I've documented those which are not sold by OW, but which I have
specifically tested for compatibility with Lombard and Pismo machines.

I wasn't able to find anything on OWC, can you provide links to these lists
for us all to benefit ?

In general, stay away from all Samsungs, and also from the latest
Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba drives for these machines.

Not yet used a Samsung, usually WD, Fujitsu and Toshiba.

Thanks for the useful information.

Here's the exact text contained in the OWC warning ...
This is found on their web page ...

Ah, ok, I didn't drill down on individual drives, I was looking for an
overview that listed which didn't work.

Thanks, I'll look to avoid newer models with large caches.

Re: Magnet used in iBook latch?

2005-09-25 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
If this is a g4 ibook the magnet goes on the right hand side of the
ibook near the edge close to the slot loading drive, it was glued
there originally but mine came off too when i pulled my book apart,
there is a mold line in the plastic that shows you where it was, you
need to put it back correctly or it will eventually crack the case
like it did mine. If you can't figure it out send me an email and i
will send you a picture of my crack so you know where the magnet goes.

Same on a G3.

There is a second magnet for the latch.

Re: ?: iBook G3 500 has10.3.9: Is HD wipeout needed to install OS 9.2.2 / 10.3.9?

2005-09-20 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
But, I need to use OS 9.2.2/Classic on this machine as well!
Is it necessary to wipe the HD clean to install both operating systems?

Nope.

What is the best procedure for me to follow?

IIRC OS 9 install is completely separate from OS X, so long as you don't
reformat the HD !

Will I then be able to upgrade the OS X 10.3.9 to OS X 10.4x?

Yup, but you'll lose 10.3.x unless your disc is partitioned.

Sign of a LCD backlight problem - isn't it ?

Re: Lombard problem

2005-08-20 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Since the logic board swap failed, I feel that leaves me with one of
two choices: The sound board or the power board. Which would be the
  most likely suspect?

Well the machine won't run with out the power or sound board, I was
suggesting swapping for a known good one.

The machine is powering up (green light and fan running), so its
 probably not the sound/AC board.

Bad Sound board on a Wallstreet can cause that symptom.

Re: Pismo and dead CD/DVD

2005-08-17 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

We have two Pismo 400 power books that the CD/DVD drives are dead in.
What is the cheapest and effective way to try and get some more use
from them? Once in a while it will recognize a disk.

Is this a common problem with these computers.

Neither one of us have had any luck find a suggestion as to what
would be a simple and good solution.

Replace the mechanism.

I'd wager it is a DRN-8080 - they are very unreliable.

Buy another mechanism and slot it in place and you are away.

You can fit any other drive in the module (just about) but the bezel won't
fit unless you match the mechanism.

 Nope.

The battery connector on the 12in is soldered on the logic board whereas on
the 14in they are on a cable off the board IIRC.

it is for the larger size of the 14. there is no way to modify the boards?

Didn't seem easy when I looked at it - I didn't even consider it an option
when trying to repair a 14in

btw. i guess that the 12 g3 and g4 are indeed interchangeable.

No idea, I've never looked at a G4 board.

Even within the G3 12in, there are a number of different board sizes and you
may need the metal frame as well as the logic board to do swap.

New world had the first USB.

pismo was the first with firewire.

Re: PB G3 power prob

2005-07-20 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

I have a 292 and 233, but the one that isn't labeled is this:
ck8241xxbkeaw (kinda hard to read so I may have messed a few)

BKE would be a 250, BKF would be a 233/0

Re: Wallstreet probs

2005-07-20 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Just to clarify:

Wallstreet II motherboards had a Rage LT chip on the bottom? That's how I
 tell the difference?

My CPU's are labeled, one is a 233MHz, no cache, found some pics on the web,
and the other is a 292MHz. ALL the mobo's I have have the LT chip on the
bottom. What's weird is a couple of the powerbooks had these CPU's in them
with the mobo with the LT chip. Maybe they were replaced with the wrong ones
 or something.

So how do I know for sure if it is a Wallstreet II mobo or not? Or CPU for
that matter if its not labeled? Is there a website? Thanks!

What's the serial number by the PCMCIA slot.

Many of the later Wallstreet logic boards had PDQ on that s/n, otherwise
just list the s/n and we can look it up.

Re: upgraded Lombard RAM - 256 MB only recognised as 128 MB

2005-07-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hi all,

I recently bought a G3 Lombard 333 MHz for sofa surfing etc; it was
originally equipped with 128 MB RAM (2x64) which I exchanged by 2x256
 MB/PC133/CL-3 modules.
Unfortunately, the Lombard only recognises each of the modules as 128
 MB.

I would have expected that, if the modules are incompatible, they
wouldn't be recognised at all, cause instability or whatever. But in
fact, the PB is running fine.

Is there any trick to force the PB to recognise the full capacity?

You need a low density module - the one you have probably has 8 chips on it,
you need one with 16.

Re: clamshell keyboard in a Lombard???

2005-06-22 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Fairly certain -- the pbfixit.com lists all the G3 keyboards as being able
 to fit in one another.

Keyboard or keytops ?

Pismo, Wallstreet and Lombard are all different connectors.

The Clam keyboard uses the same connector as the Lombard but is mounted at a
90 degree angle.

Re: question about PowerBook model names

2005-06-19 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I've never memorized the names and characteristics of the last several
models of G3 PowerBooks. I know the last two, the G3 400 and 500 circa
1999 and 2000, have (and may be called) Bronze Keyboards, but what is
 their official name?

The 400/500 was the Powerbook (Firewire) or better known as the Pismo.

The 333/400 was the Powerbook G3 (Bronze Keyboard) or Lombard.

And what about the model prior to that, the 1998? That model looks much
like the 400 and 500 but the battery shape is different and the logo
placement on the screen frame is: a small rainbow Apple logo at the
bottom center of the screen frame, the word logo PowerPC at the top
center of screen frame, and the word logo PowerBookG3 near the lower
left corner of the screen frame. (The 400/500 has a white Apple logo at
top center of the screen frame, and PowerBook at bottom center of
 screen frame.)

Powerbook G3 series or Wallstreet.

(Note: I'm asking because I recently received several new VST battery
and charger sets for these models and I want to post them with proper
naming convention to the LowEndMac list.)

Lombard and Pismo use the same battery and external battery charger.

 I know the WallStreet, Lombard and Pizmo all use the same CHARGER;
the WallStreet had different sized battery/CD-DVD/floppy. {I know

I said external battery charger, I made no mention of mains adapter.

The 3500 or Kanga uses a different battery and external battery charger to
the other G3 Powerbooks but can use the same mains adapter as the other G3
Powerbooks.

Re: Lombard snags, L2 cache failure message

There were also cases reported where the Lombard processor was
 turning bad at some point.

true, the dreaded L2 cache failure, I suppose... That's why
I sort of cross my fingers every time something weird happens!

Oh boy, a question I can answer!
You'll know it if the L2 cache goes.
In 9.2.2 after the 9.2 splash screen you get a error message that says
the built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance
Maybe it should be updated to say please contact Daystar for assistance

I must have missed something - any reason why we are advertising a company
here when all you need to do is spend 50 USD on a processor ?

Re: Lombard meets Pismo in the operating room...

2005-06-11 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hello All,

 I have a Lombard 366

333 ?

with a bad key board and a Pismo 500 that will not power up at all.

Pull the PRAM battery and main battery and try again.

I want to swap out the KBs if possible. Does any one
have any idea if it is, or know that it is not possible?

They are identical on the keys BUT the plugs to the logic board are
completely different.

Also pc66 RAM vs. pc100 RAM; are they interchangable?

Well you can run 100 in a machine that needs 66, in general. Some machines
like Wallstreet and Lombard can only address low density chips so a 256 may
show as a 128.

Re: Lombard 333/400 processor cards

2005-06-06 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I assume the Lombard 333 and 400 MHz cards are interchangable, is this
correct? (I know Pismo processor cards are not swappable with Lombard's).

Yes.

Also, for those Lombards with DVD playback facilities, is this part of the
processor card or of the motherboard?

It's a chip on the motherboard.

Re: Wallstreet charge probs

2005-04-27 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
My new-to-me Series II Wallstreet 266 definitely has battery issues -
won't charge a new battery in either bay. Got it to see the battery in
both bays, briefly with lightning charge indicator, then nada...back to
red X through the icon on restart, etc. PMU reset ineffective.

I'm thinking probably needs new PMU, but that's just a guess. Anybody
here had (and fixed) similar problems with their G3 'Book?

You need to be sure that those batteries will charge in another known good
 machine, then fault find yours.
 --

I'm reasonably sure that a *brand new* battery should charge in its
intended PowerBook without any major glitches in the process.

Missed that.

I have had 3rd party batteries that were bad on arrival and never charged,
an external charger is useful for that.

The more I Google and read up on the subject
the more I begin to suspect a faulty Power Charge Inverter. Can anyone
tell me if they think I'm homing in on the problem and its probable fix?

Not sure which board you are talking about here.

I'd strip the machine, check that all the boards are correctly seated - the
Charge Board can become detached from the Power Board.

Check also that the EMI shielding near the DC socket isn't shorting to the
metal plug.

Beyond that, you really need a good machine to test with, other wise you are
buying parts at random - there are 5 or 6 boards that could be at fault
here.

I've several times found a bad Sound Board can stop batteries charging,
after that I'd suspect the Charge, PMU, Power in that order, but that's just
my experiences.

Re: Pismo AC adapter shape, type?

2005-04-23 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hello,
Can a Pismo 400 mhz run on the 45w square white power supply from a
dual usb ibook, or does it need a yo-yo style ac adapter?

The snow iBook adapters - the G4 yo-yo and the square white adapter both
have a smaller plug than that used in the Pismo.

The Pismo needs the black slim G3 adapter or the G3 yo-yo.

Re: New iBook now or wait until after Tiger is launched?

2005-04-22 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 Hi all,
I am contemplating purchasing a new 12 iBook G4 for my wife, who needs
it for her work, as she's using my old Pismo G3, which is just too big
and heavy for her to carry around.

I understand that OSX Tiger will be released soon. Does that mean that
Apple will be upgrading it's iBooks to accommodate the increased memory
 and CPU requirements of Tiger?

Having said all that, should I wait until after Tiger is released to
see if Apple bumps up the specs of the iBook? I'm not in a rush - my
time frame is about 1 month...

Wait.

There are rumours of a speed bump.

Re: Wallstreet battery probs?

2005-04-21 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
  but I think
that the main batteries have to be in working order for the PRAM battery to
 recharge.

Why - I would have thought it was more likely to recharge if there were no
batteries in taking current ?

Re: is my iBook screwed

2005-04-14 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 So the part that says:

The program is available for certain iBook G3 models (see below for
a complete list) with serial numbers in the following range:

   UV117XX to UV342XX

 Means what???

My understanding is that now, it means very little, except that maybe it'll
exclude boards that have already been replaced.

That range of serial numbers have gradually been increased as they have
added earlier and earlier models to the list of those cover by the REP.

 Mine is UV4466X (I

and the problem does not apply to mine. If you in the range below, then you
 are covered.what could be simpler?

Ooer, apologies then I have been misled.

Re: Tiger Release

2005-04-13 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
But they list clamshell iBooks which had 4MB of Video RAM and up to what,
466MHz processors with a max of what 768MB RAM?

The Pismo came with 8MB Video RAM, up to 500MHz processors and a max of 1GB
RAM. Doesn't make sense...what could be the limiting factor?

The later clamshell iBooks had 8MB VRAM and an ATI Rage Mobility 128 (AGP
2x) graphics card.

The Pismo had 8MB and ATI Rage Mobility 128.

I think it is a mistake on the website as others have pointed out, it will
run on a Pismo.

Re: Mainstreet/Lombard conundrum

2005-04-13 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I have a Mainstreet and a Lombard, both in good shape. I want to
upgrade one of them for everyday use until I can afford a new laptop.

I have 2 uses other than normal stuff:

 1. I have an ap that uses a 2nd monitor (or TV) for general use by an
audience. If you *must* know, it's a karaoke ap. Say what you will ;)
It also uses an external firewire hard drive. I have a Newer Firewire
 cardbus card.

 2. I want to be able to watch DVDs when I take the train across country.

I can upgrade the Lombard's cpu by sending it in.

I can upgrade the Mainstreet's cpu by purchasing an upgrade and
 installing it myself.

I'm not even sure if you can upgrade a Mainstreet to watch DVDs, or if
they make an internal (slide-in) DVD drive for them.

 Suggestions, thoughts?

If I understood the question I could offer a suggestion.

Both machines run the FW HD without upgrade.

Both machines run DVD with the DVD drive and a hardware Decoder.

Both machines can be upgraded to be better.

What's the issue ?

 http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/

Mine did that. Very un-nerving experience. Find out if
your serial number matches the range in this kb
 article.

They all do.

It covers all G3s.

If so, call Apple and arrange a dispatch.
They will send you a box via DHL overnight. You box it
up and send it off. It'll be back inside three days.
And you'll get a new logic board to boot.

Only if they agree it is the video chip at fault and there is no other
issue.

AND you are not in UK.

We have to take ours to a dealer.

Who may 9 weeks later tell you that you have a non-repairable fault. Which
is in fact a screen fault they caused, fixed by reseating the data cable in
the LCD - or I could have accepted their 750 USD repair quote.

Re: Won't boot from DVD

2005-04-11 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I am having a problem booting from my DVD ROM drive. I am trying to
just wipe my machine and do a clean install from 10.3 DVD. The disk
reads fine in finder, but no matter what method I try (restart and
boot from, hold down c, or hold down alt) the DVD will not boot.

 1. I know it is not the DVD, tried it in my friend's G5, worked fine.
 2. I know my drive will boot from CD, my 10.2 CD's work fine.
 3. Have tried more then one DVD to boot and all fail.

I am on a Titanium 667 VGA w/ the DVD-ROM drive (not superdrive).
 Anyone have any ideas?

Is the drive correctly set to master/slave as required on that machine ?

Re: Replacement CDROM for clamshell

2005-04-05 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Does anyone know if the clamshell CDROM is specific to the iBook - or
is there a standard form factor that will work? Thanks for your help.

Modern standard drives will work, but you'll have problems making the bezel
fit unless you use the same make and model. IIRC they need to be set to
slave in a Clamshell.

Re: SV: iBook screen went black

2005-04-04 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

 This is the G4 iBook, 1.2 Ghz, 12 - new November 2004.

Take it into Apple for repair ?

the _screen_ itself that goes black or very dark, not the machine
that isn't powering up. It is on, the light on the screen is just out.
The book is on, and works correctly I think, only the light on the
screen does not work. I can see what is on the screen vaguely if I hold
it up against the light, just enough to see the cursor so I can manage
to turn it off, re-start or something like that

Backlight not working.

Could be the bulb, inverter board or most likely the cable which goes thru
the RH hinge.

BTW. Stay away from the 233 cacheless and from any 12 and 13 screen.

them.

I agree with the 12in FTSN, if you intend running X.

Re: Wallstreet-more confusion

2005-04-03 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

Is one with a 12 screen really the exact same size overall as
those with 13.3 and 14.1 screens, and even Lombards?

The display have the same amount of pixels in each model on a smaller
area, but the machines themselves are exactly as big as is the display
house, so there's only more plastics around the 12. I had a 13 and
upgraded it to 14 as I couldn't stand the size.

The 12in is lower res - 832 x 624 rather than the 1024 x 768 of the 13 14.

Re: Can I monitor my network?

2005-03-21 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 what I want to see is simply the traffic levels;
that is, to be able to look at this and determine that yes, there is
another computer connected to my network.

Does the ABS not tell you what devices are connected to it - I'm guessing
here as I use a Netgear router - which does.

Also can you restrict the network to certain MAC addresses, that and an
unguessable WEP password makes you pretty tight IMHO.

Re: Pink screen

2005-03-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
I have a Pismo 500. Everything works just hunk dory. But I
occasionally get the 'pink screen'. Starts in the lower left hand
corner and in its worse case it stretches up about 2 inches into the
screen. Sort of fans out from the corner.

Does not matter if the Pismo is running on batteries (a 6600mAh 10.8v
Li-Ion) or if it is plugged in. Doesn't matter if its on my desk at
home or somewhere else. Does not appear on a fresh start up. Only
appears after the Pismo has been awakened from sleep mode.

Screen is fine. No missing pixels. I do have a Belkin 54g wireless
card inserted into the pc slot.

So what's the diagnosis? Will it get worse? Can it be repaired?
Expensive? DIY or best left to an Apple tech person?

Backlight or inverter board.

Often gets better as it warms up - I have a screen which is like that on
power on and returns to normal after after 2 minutes.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Thanks Bruce--it's a Wallstreet (thanks VERY much for laying the options
 out, too).

If I was a betting man I'd guess you had the 13.3in screen and the screen
cable was loose - a very common problem.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-15 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

Re my distorted screen problem, and following on from your much
appreciated responses, it turns out my 1998 Wallstreet is a 14.1 inch
screen. (I understand the Wallstreet 13.3 inch screen model has
recognised problems with its cables but not usually the case with the
 14.1 inch screen.)

The symptoms are the same, so I'm going to stick to the diagnosis of a
bad cable or cable connection. Better than the alternative, which is
that the video ram is failing, in which case it's new logic board time
 for you.

Me too, never seen a machine with bad VRAM that was variable.

Get it opened up and check the cables.

Re: Lombard overheating?

2005-03-09 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Normally I hardly hear the fan on my 333mhz Lombard, but sometimes after
using it for awhile on my lap or bed the fan suddenly gets louder and warm
air is pushed out the left side. This has not yet happened while using it
on a desk. At first I'd panic and shut down as soon as possible. When I
grew tired of this I started keeping it on but moving it onto a desk.
Normally the exhaust fan then stops after a few minutes.

I suppose this is the computer's way of cooling itself when getting too
hot? My question is, is this a normal thing I can ignore, or is it a
warning to shut down for awhile?

Sounds like exactly what I'd expect it to do - if it gets warm, the fan
comes on - something like bedding isn't a cooling surface, so I'd expect it
to come on more often than on a desk.

Re: My Pismo is dead-nothing??

2005-03-08 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Thanks to Malcolm, Laurent and others who commented. Nothing has
worked-- I have another very basic Pismo on the way thanks to eBay and
I will start with the Pram go from there. I will let you know the
 results.

It'll run without the pram so I'd stat with the under trackpad powerboard
and the sound board at the back.

Best

I thought the pismo had some design quirk whereby it wouldn't start with
a dead PRAM battery, but would if you bypassed the battery altogether. Or
am I thinking of some other Mac?

Er, that's what I said, pull the pram as it'll work without one and might
not with.

Re: My Pismo is dead-nothing??

2005-03-07 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Now it is my turn to have my Pismo go dead. It is an upgraded G3 to
G4/550 with 1 Gb RAM and standard otherwise.

It does nothing--no chime no lights. I think it is getting power thru
the yo-yo since it gets warm on the back side--pretty much as normal.
The battery is minimal so i am sure it is exhausted by now and doesn't
seem to recharge when left overnight. I have tried a few things as
suggested by others--removed keyboard and all looks as normal,
disconnected Pram battery connector to clear battery, (reset switch had
not worked), and plugged in USB keyboard to see if that would bypass
on-off switch. I have not disassembled to check set of components--they
 appear OK.

It was operating as normal and a few days ago, I transferred some files
via the ethernet to my G4 and all was well. My grandson then used it on
the internet and all seemed OK. Thru this operation, I had noticed more
whirring noise from the computer that seemed unusual-- like a fan sound
or maybe the hard drive. It had always been relatively quiet so it made
me wonder but not too significant.

Then later when I went back--it had gone dark like asleep--but the
noise was still there--it would not restart and the LCD was off--no
lights at all. Since it was late and my granddaughter was ready to go
to bed in the room. I disconnected the computer and moved it to
different room-- the whirring noise would not stop. It was not real
loud but would have been annoying. I assume whatever was causing the
noise was now powered by the remaining battery charge. Next morning all
was quiet and nothing I tried made any difference.

I am looking for suggestions--one possibility that was mentioned in a
previous post was that a bad Pram battery could cause it to go dead. Is
this true? I always thought that a bad battery would just show up in
clock, etc. If it could just be the battery causing the entire problem,
that might be the place to start. I do not have components for swapping
so that option is not readily available.

 Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Remove the main battery, disconnect the PRAM battery, plug the mains in and

I assume from your response that Lombard compontents are
 interchangeable with Pismo-- any others?

Very few parts from the Lombard - HD, CD, battery, mains adapter.

Re: replacement CD drive for Wallstreet?

2005-03-02 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
Anyway I'm looking for a CD drive for him and was wondering if there were
different models to look for (or avoid).

Unlike many modules the Wallstreet one is a mechanism and casing combined,
there are no options apart from a DVD drive or an aftermarket CDRW drive.
as wondering if there

I know there is a good CD drive and a bad CD drive for the Lombard/Pismo

DVD drive - the DRN-8080 DVD drive seems more prone to failure ?
