Re: iBook question again

2005-01-02 Thread Matt Halter
Aase,
My advice is to buy one with the faster processor. My G4 800 is a dog
compared to my wife's 1 gig mhz. The 30 gig HD is too small. You'll
run out of space fast especially if you have lots of music or photos.
Built in bluetooth is nice but I would trade it off to get a faster
processor and larger HD. Just my 2 cents.

Actually you can buy new iBooks from MCE with superdrives installed for
about $200 extra. Usually includes upgraded hard drive and ram as
well. Not a bad deal.

Matt

The iBooks do not have the Superdrive option either so that was
another draw to the PB.

Funny, my tray loading iMac has worked from day one. Guess you are
lying to make a point since all tray loaders don't have this problem.

The standard CD drive that came in my PC that was manufactured around
the same time as the iMac had a much sturdier design. The system
worked without it but it had to be sent in to an AARS to be fixed. If
the design had been similar to most desktop PCs or Power Macs the
drive could have been taken out and sent in to be replaced instead of
the whole computer.
The standard drive that was in your PC wouldn't have fit. Secondly, in
less than 10 minutes you can pull those drives, you didn't have to send
the whole computer. But if you did I bet you got the whole computer
checked out not only the drive.

That's because it really isn't any better. That's just a myth.
The fact that you personally can't discern a difference doesn't mean
it's a myth. It's only your opinion.

I'm not sure where you put those two ideas together. I still maintain
it was a design flaw, and the Extension Program supports this.
Regarding it being an issue had to do with Apple being dishonest
about the issue.

Again, simply because it's your belief that it's a design flaw doesn't
mean it actually is one. You have offered no technical evidence, only
anecdotal evidence. My son has owned one of the effected iBooks
without problems. Secondly, if Apple had not yet determined what the
issue was I don't think you can call them liars for saying there was no
known issue, unless you have specific evidence when they determined the
problem.

Me and 2000 other people. You can go ahead and call each one of them
out on the issue if you like.

2000 out of almost a million iBooks sold. 2 tenths of one percent.
How bout you call the almost 998,000 folks who haven't had a problem.
That'll give you a different perspective, eh?

That doesn't change the fact that users of iBooks that aren't covered
are left out in the cold.
Sorry, life isn't fair sometimes.

Re: Any way to import video into a Wall Street Powerbook?

2003-12-15 Thread Matt Halter
I can vouch for the Capsure, but it will only import analog video. It
doesn't digitize it. Your best bet is to use something like the ADS
Pyro Pro (which will digitize your analog video and import and export
in multiple ways) and you could import via firewire PC card (which I
think would be fastest way to transfer video to the hard drive). I
don't know of any PC card that will import and digitize at the same
time. There are some digital video cameras that allow you to run
analog video into them and they digitize it for you. Some of those
export in USB as well as Firewire.

Re: Wallstreet Woes -- Commiserators welcome

I would suggest 1) resetting the pram 3 times. 2) Reset Power manager.
 3) Reseat ram chips and processor. 4) Pull one ram chip at a time and
try the computer with the other chip to test them. 5) Sometimes a
failing keyboard can cause strange symptoms on the Wallstreet. These
steps have all cured similar problems on my Wallstreet II.

John,

My understanding when I bought my Powerlogix upgrade was the card would
not officially support more than 128mb ram in either slot (256 total)
Although I believe a few folks were able to have more recognized, it
seemed to be hit or miss. The Sonnet upgrades recognize 512mb.

How much do you want for them. I might be able to use them in my

Re: Which Powerbook?

2003-09-03 Thread Matt Halter
The speed tests I've seen put the iBook even or faster than the little
Al Book, except when using software that uses the G4's altivec. IBooks
get more run time when on battery power, especially the 14. What you
describe your wife will be doing the iBook will handle no sweat.
Worked as computer tech in High School this past year. We had approx.
120 ibooks in use, around 40 used by teachers. Never heard one
complaint about speed and most of them were using 600mhz/700mhz ibooks
doing exactly what you say your wife will do. We used iBooks to do all
our presentations. Very easy. Bought my son a 800mhz 12 iBook for
Christmas, we haven't been disappointed. That said, the practical
advantages to the Al book are it has airport extreme, they're now
making Gig ram chips for it (doubles ibook)(in the OS X era that can be
important), and it has the way cool aluminum exterior. If I were you
I'd buy an ibook and spend what I saved not getting the al book on an
ipod.(Apple had special deal on ibook/ipod purchase). In a year, if
it's not fast enough, sell it and buy a new G5 laptop. Just my 2 cents.

and the iBook even older with a G3 processor. It also is very small
and light--a plus.
Still, it would be nice to have a bigger screen than the 12. If that
were so, how would the 14 iBook go versus the 867mhz TiBook.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: DVD on Wallstreet

2003-09-01 Thread Matt Halter
I don't have my OS X handbook with me but I remember reading about a
problem with OS 9 not being able to boot. I don't remember the
solution but I know there was one. If I can get to my book tomorrow
I'll send you the info. In the meantime, I've had several computers
with OS X not want to boot off the 9 disk. A re-install(not a clean
install) of X took care of the problem sometimes. Also, try resetting
the power manager and pram. A couple weeks ago my wife's Wallstreet
wouldn't boot from anything and out of desperation I reset the PM and
pram and got it to at least begin booting off a CD. Can't explain why
that worked, but may be worth a try if you haven't already.

As an aside--Most of my mac using friends feel it is asking for trouble
installing X over 9. They all recommend wiping the disk and starting
fresh. I was a doubter, but the more I see, the more I think they may
be right.

Or did you use a separate CD? The thing is, if you cannot boot using

It does sound like your HD is going south though... the best way to

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Matt Halter
I don't have any firsthand knowledge with the Pismo but from everything
I've seen they are rock solid. If you want something that is
upgradeable the Pismo is your ticket. I had the opportunity to work in
my local High School for the last 7 wks of school as the Computer Lab
assistant and all the hardware problems were funneled through me to the
district tech. We averaged one iBook being sent out for warranty work
a week while I was there, (we had 110 in the building you do the
math-None of them were the newer 800 or 900mhz models.), all because of
the well documented screen/cable problem. I would be wary of buying an
older iBook used/out of warranty/Applecare. That being said, they were
loved by the teachers who used them and everything else seemed to work
great. We bought my son a new 800mhz combo ibook last Christmas and he
won't give it up for anything. It simply rocks. If you shop hard you
can find new/refurbished iBooks very reasonable. SmallDog had their
refurbished 14 700Mhz combo's on sale for $1065 this past weekend.
New 700mhz CD only under $800. If it were up to me I'd pony up for a
new iBook- its the first new mac I've bought in the last 13 years.
And I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Matt Halter
Your assumptions are not entirely accurate. I bought my son's ibook
for $1200. Used average on ebay at the time, for combo drive older
model only about $130 less with slower processor, smaller hard drive,
slower combo drive, and weaker video card, out of warranty. SmallDog
selling Apple refurbed 800mhz combo drives for under $1000 for next 3
days. I'm willing to bet doesn't lose anymore value in next couple of
years vs. pismo at $800 used which is what I was comparing value to on
my post. For this price why wait? The performance/value/$$ ratio is
as good or better than used.

New 700mhz CD only under $800. If it were up to me I'd pony up for a

Ummm.. not meaning any offense, but why? The last time I bought a new
computer was in 1990. That was a high-end 386 IIRC, close to being
cutting-edge (for the time), and the reason I bought it new was because
there were few on the secondhand market.
An iBook is by definition not cutting-edge - it is value-priced. Much
better plan, IMHO, to let someone else take the computer off the shelf
and incur the resultant devaluation whack. I simply don't see the
percentage in buying a new (new) computer unless either:
a) a specific model is required for something, e.g. college course, or
b) it's a gift for someone else, or
c) you simply must have the BEST and LATEST now.
Simple economics: the same money that will buy you a new mediocre
computer will buy you a couple-of-years-old-cutting-edge model.

(or if anyone has gotten it to work for OS X). Any information would be
 appreciated.

I'd like to know as well, but I'm not holding my breath, since the iRez
 has
been discontinued for quite some time and wasn't widely distributed,
 since
it was specifically for the PowerBook G3 Series line of laptops...

My understanding is it is OS 9 only. No intention to develope OS 10
drivers.
I don't know of any 3rd party drivers.

Re: Powerbook G3

2002-11-11 Thread Matt Halter
I don't use Office but my wife does at work and she says its slow. I
have that same printer and it only slows way down when you print a photo
at the best setting. For normal documents it is pretty spiffy, much
faster than my newer photosmart 1115. I've used it with my Wallstreet
II (266mhz/192mb) and it worked fine, spitting out almost 8 pages of
double spaced text in a minute.

Have you updated the drivers? The latest versions are available for
download at hp.com. Does it print just as slow when printing from other
programs? If you're running OS9 or earlier increase the memory
allocated to Office 98. Turn off virtual memory if you are using it,
especially if her hard drive is full, that may make a difference.

Sometmes it takes literaly 10 to 15 minutes to print a simple 1 page
 letter from Word 98.
We have defraged the hardrive, rebuilt the desk top, and installed a
total of 192 MB RAM. She uses an HP 935c printer that was new. We
have tried reinstalling the software, but still is really slow.
According to the lowendmac site we can install up to 384 MN RAM,
when we had the ram installed for us we were told it was maxed at
 192. So this is why I wonder about what machine we really have.
Would appreciate some simple help here.

I understand that their is a number of models of this computer.
Here are the numbers on what we ordered from Apple.

 PBG3 14.1T/333/64/4G/CD/E/56K
 Serial No. QT92818XEXW

I believe that this is called the Lombard. According to a printout
 off the Lowendmac. site.

Can anyone tell from the numbers above if this is a true Lombard Model?

trouble free performance or some trouble in two years?

Oh no I have gone cross-eyed.

Re: Wallstreet firewire pc card q?

2002-07-19 Thread Matt Halter

Firewire works fine on Wallstreet. The MHZ limit is really what you
need to process digital video adequately. Now the speeds you get moving
data will not be as good as say the new iBooks, but it will certainly
connect you no problem. It will only limit the burn speed of a burner
you hook up or drop some frames of video compared to the newest chipsets.

300MHz [Belkin]; Swann recommends 400MHz which I think means yuo'd
need a Firewire equiped PowerBook in the first place.

I don't have the bottle or cash to have a punt but if you get one to
 work I'd like to know.

Re: Comments on the Jaguar (OS 10.2) upgrade policy (there is NONE)?

2002-07-17 Thread Matt Halter

Jaguar sounds fantastic, but, unless I upgrade from my wallstreet II and
older iMacs I can't really make use of all its speed and power. If I do
upgrade my hardware I won't have to shell out the big bucks just for
Jaguar. I really expected to get a price break on the upgrade since I
bought my newest iMac only 7 months ago and it came with 10.1 Maybe
the pricing is to motivate us older hardware owners to upgrade.
That's how I'm looking at it.

Re: Upgrade

2002-07-17 Thread Matt Halter

I can't argue with your reasoning. I'm not asking for a freebie ,but, I
feel like if I was their guinea pig, working through the beta version on
up, they ought to give me a break. Jaguar wouldn't be here without some
of us willing to take the time and $$$ to work through the teething of
OS X. As I listened to the keynote this morning I reacted negatively to
the pricing of Jaguar (although I'm amazed at what's in it, and can't
argue with the value you're getting). I did react positively to paying
for .mac. I think .mac is the first thing on the internet I really
won't mind paying for directly. Go figure.
