Re: 12.1 in. 1.5ghz powerbook
Sorry for the late response. I love my 1.5ghz 12 inch. I had the original 12 inch. The one I have now has the built in SuperDrive. I love the size, the portability. I put in a 1gig memory chip. I find the speed just fine. I helped my housemate set up her new IBM Thinkpad tonight. It's about 15 inches. It's way to big in my opinion. I've done photo editing on the 12 inch with no problems. Some people want a larger screen but for me, the increased weight wouldn't be worth it. Connect the video cable and hit detect displays in the display control panel. If the PB desktop (or part of it) appears on the TV screen then you are all set (you might still need to adjust the resolution - in my case it comes up 90% of the times at the right resolution, but in NTSC mode so that it displays in bw, so I adjust it to PAL). 12 Powerbook as external DVD player for Television
Hi, It seems as if this ought to be easy but I'm confused. What specific parts/cables to I need to hook my Powerbook up to a television so that I can play DVDs (commercial) and see/hear them on the television? The KB articles I've dug up are vague. I have an Apple Video Adapter but I don't know if it's the right one. I don't know if I originally bought it for my iBook. I found the following in a KB article: With the release of the PowerBook G4 (12-inch), Apple has revised the Apple Video Adapter. This Apple Video Adapter looks similar to the earlier Apple Video Adapter. The later Apple Video Adapter model number is M9109, while the earlier Apple Video Adapter model number is M8734. Apple will no longer sell the earlier Apple Video Adapter. However, there is no model number on the one I have. I don't know what the difference is. Given that I have the right one, what do I do next? What is a composite video port? If I use and S-Video cable, do I still need to do something else to get the sound to the television? 12 Powerbook 1.5gHz, SuperDrive Thanks, Meg -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... It's easy to get confused by this. I don't know if the 12 has the same stuff as the 15, but here's what I do: Video: s-video from Powerbook to TV if your TV lacks s-video there is a little white wire that comes with the Powerbook that attaches to the s-video and gives a video RCA plug similar to the ones below (usually there's a little yellow circle on the end) Audio: you need a cord that will plug into the headphone jack or line-out on the Powerbook on one side, and has two RCA plugs on the other (usually one red and one white, by convention). You ought to be able to get one cheap at a Radio Shack or equivalent. What I am calling RCA plugs are the ones that normally are used to connect a consumer level VCR to a TV (back in the days before s- video especially). of course you can just listen to it from the Powerbook, but that does leave something to be desired. If this isn't clear email me and I can post pictures of the wires connectors. TjL -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Opinion wanted
Why on earth should Apple be responsible for this? The equipment was in no way defective. They didn't spill water in it. And, Laurent had tried to teach his daughter not to take food and beverages near the computer. I believe that the kind of action your suggesting actually decreases the quality of customer service for everyone. Companies would cater only to those who scream. This is hard on the customer service people, who are more likely to give short shrift to those who don't scream. It's bad for Apple's bottom line. If Apple replace the iBook of every kid who did something stupid, the rest of us would pay the price in higher equipment costs. If Apple no longer wants your family's business I would start looking for another similar iBook with other failed parts like a display. Given that a new 1.2 gig iBook goes for $900 at amazon.com I wouldn't spend more that $700 for a working 1.0 gig one and half that for one that needs repairs. After your done swapping parts you'll have a working iBook and lots of bits left over for future repairs... and the satisfaction of denying Apple the opportunity to gouge you again! BTW, my problem Pismo is sorta working after I put some fresh heat sink paste on the processor- it managed a whole day without freezing! 12 inch seems crippled
Help!!! Two days ago, my 12 inch PB suddenly slowed to a crawl. I ran disk first aid. I did an archive and install and updated everything. It's a little better. It only takes 20-30 minutes to get to the log on screen after a restart as opposed to an hour. Lots of spinning beach balls. If I have Activity Monitor running, I see that lots of things keep showing up as Hung, especially WindowServer. It seemed to run fine from the install disk so I don't think it's hardware. I haven't run the hardware disk yet, will do that tonight. I know I haven't given all the information probably required to diagnose. Then I re-inserted the 512 Mb memory module, re-ran the tests, and once again everything was OK. Next step was a boot into single-user mode to run fsck, which also came up OK - no problems revealed. Finally a full reboot into normal mode was successful, and it's been OK since then, with a couple of reboots, and at least one 'wake from sleep'. It's possible that the ram became loose. I periodically have a problem with kernel panics when I pick my 12 pb by the left front. Turns out that, over time and with the jostling that comes of carry it everywhere, the Airport card comes every so slightly unseated. It's not enough to interfere with the Airport functions but it causes the panics. So, I take the card out, put it back and then everything is fine for several months. Cloning to a new computer
I admit that I didn't pay attention to this discussion the last time it came around (don't recall if it was this list or another). I think I will be getting a different Powerbook 12 inch, on with a Superdrive. I want to clone my current information to the new one. I have Carbon Copy Cloner. Do I just need to clone my User files? Should I clone the main Library file? There will be some differences in the files that are included on the new computer because of the DVD burner so I don't want to overwrite those. The last time I did this, from the iBook to the Powerbook, it seemed as if I really needed to have copied some things from the main Library folder. Would there be any harm in copying that as well? That should be enough to cover your move to a new computer. Copying the main Library folder shouldn't harm things...but I might make a disk image (with carbon copy cloner) of all the things in it, then drag them over only when you need them. Rob Good suggestion. I don't use disk images much so I tend to forget about them. Feel free to add programs, and games, thank you Jean-Marc First, you should go to Preferences and check your system date and time. Your email claims to have been sent 12/31/69! From the Apple Menu, choose System Preferences. Fix the date and time. Then, run Software Update. If you don't have Bluetooth (which Powerbook did you get, BTW?) or an iPod you can un-select those updates if you wish. After all of the updates are downloaded, you will be prompted to restart. Many folks recommend repairing permissions at this point. Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility. Click on the First Aid tab, then select Repair Permissions. Safari is a great browser. Other programs that I use every day include Launch Bar, a keyboard based app launcher, Watson, which is front end for a lot of information on the web which is often faster than using Safari (crucial for TV listings). Sticky Brain for storing all those bits of information and finding them quickly. Games I'm playing these days include Super Mah Jongg from www.gamehouse.com and Uplink which you can get from Ambrosia Software (www.ambrosiaSW.com) www.versiontracker.com is a great resource for finding software. This list is great. I've also learned a lot by reading the discussions in the Support section of the Apple.com. One of my favorite sources for Apple news is www.macminute.com. Has it happened to one of you? (by you, i mean 12 PB owners) i just wanted to know... i will call Apple tomorrow anyway (late here in France) Thanks Benoit I've had one fall off. I haven't gotten around to sending it back to Apple to have it fixed, though. Yes, that's what you have to do. They won't send you new little feet. Same thing if the screws at the bottom corners (when open) of the lid/screen fall out. I suppose that you could try rubber cement if you still have the feet. Little rubber feet
One of the little rubber feet fell off of my PB 12. I have the piece. How should I stick it back on? I really don't want to send the whole thing back to Apple (which is what they wanted me to do when I had lost one of the little screws in the lid, which luckily, I found again). The rubber piece appears to have a little nub on it which fits into a little indentation in the computer. That doesn't seem very secure. Would krazy glue be a really bad idea? I used rubber cement on my PB G3 Bronze. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that to be what was originally used. Seems to work pretty well for me. Hamlin Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. For some reason, it appeals to me more than krazy glue. Don't know why. There is no visible evidence of adhesive on either the foot or the computer itself. Kernel panics when moving
I can't remember if it was on this list or another one that I read about this problem. Someone reported correlating their kernel panics with picking up the open Powerbook by the left side. I don't remember exactly what they decided the problem was or how they fixed it. Well, my PB 12 is now doing just that. Loose RAM? Aircard? Fatal flaw? Anyone remember?
