Re: Wallstreet and Duo

2005-10-28 Thread Mike McGinnis
Yes, I have run Duos, Wallstreets, and Lombards from
the Duo power adapter. The only problem I have found
is the Duo P/S does not have as high a current
output, so it may not charge your battery while the
computer is awake. It will take longer to charge but
other than that there is no problem.

Re: 802.11g on a lombard

2005-02-05 Thread Mike McGinnis
Not necessarily, the Belkin card in the red/gray box
should have the broadcom chipset and will work with
airport drivers. However the Belkin card in the
white/gray box was in my case, a Ralink Technologies
chipset. If you go to their website you will find
drivers, however airport drivers will not work.

Been there tried that, Mike

I had previously posted this problem and it appears
Belkin did change chipsets. You can go to Ralink's
website and get drivers for it, however it will not
work with airport drivers. Unfortunatley Belkins
support techs know nothing about this and were rude in
trying to help me solve this problem, they claim they
are still Broadcom chipsets.

After a nights sleep and a cup of coffee I decided to
Google Ralink Technologies RT2500. What do you know
Belkin changed the chipset unbeknown to the tech I
talked to at Belkin. I now have new drivers which
work, however my first objective was to be able to use
airport drivers and support programs. I guess I call
Belkin again as they claim airport compatibility.

Airport problems

2004-11-15 Thread Mike McGinnis
Hi All,
I have been learning from this list for a while and I
now have a problem I haven't been able to solve on my
own. I have a Lombard with OS 10.3.6 which I have
recently decided to change to a Belkin G pcmcia card
from an Orinoco Silver B card, I uninstalled the
sourceforge drivers I was using with the Belkin card,
in case they were causing a conflict. I understood the
Belkin should be recognized under airport extreme as a
compatible card, it shows on the tool bar as a Ralink
Technology RT2500 card. When I try to start airport
setup it says there is no airport card installed. It
acts like it doesn't have the proper drivers loaded.
What am I missing? After 4 hours on Google I give up I
need some expert help.

Thanks Mike

Under Network ( System Preferences) -Ethernet adapter
Under TC/IP Setup, Configure-Using DCHP (do not put in ip address let
Server do that)
Under System Preferences, Wireless Config - Put in name of network ,
then hit Apply Now to activate. You should see a signal strength on
the display.

Re: cooling down Lombard?

2004-02-19 Thread Mike McGinnis
Andrew,
 I use Thermograph on OS9. http://www.kezer.net/thermograph.html . I
have also tone the thermal paste, I don't know for sure how much good
it did as my processor had already lost its L2 cache, it did seem to
drop the temperature about 10-15 degrees F.

However all the temperature monitors are OSX and I am running OS 9.2.2.
Is there any reason not to just go ahead and add the thermal paste to
my CPU? It doesn't seem to difficult and it has to help.
Any recommendation for the paste itself?

Thanks

Re: Lombard ram again

2004-02-14 Thread Mike McGinnis
Hi Vicky,
I finally fired up my Lombards to check the temperature. It runs about
63'c for light work to 75'c for processor intensive work. With mine I
removed the heat-sink from the top of the processor and put on new
thermal grease. It had already fried the L2 Cache so I felt I couldn't
do any more harm. It had been running as high as 87c prior to the new
thermal grease. My second Lombard Ran 59'c with processor intensive
work. It's L2 is still working fine and I haven't felt the need to put
thermal grease on it.

Also I asked the other day but only seen one reply, after checking for

Is this too hot?
is it ok?

Have you tried re-booting with the option key held down?
This is not working on my Lombard. I've seen this mentioned also on the
PowerBook list to be working for pre G3 Macs, but it does not work on
my
540 either. It does on the Ti Book. Are you sure that G3 PowerBooks do
that?

Re: Lombard L2 failure, was Re: Lombard cooling fan

2004-01-17 Thread Mike McGinnis
I also recently had a Lombard 400 CPU having L2 failures. I decided it
was toast anyhow so I popped off the heat-sink on the CPU, cleaned off
the chip, reapplied a small amount of thermal grease and reinstalled
the heat-sink. The temperature of the CPU dropped 10-15 degrees. I
wonder if I had done this prior to the computer having problems would
it have saved my CPU.

I also can use a 400 CPU if anyone has one laying around.

Thanks, Mike

Does anyone know what the determining factors are for the cooling fan
in a Lombard to run? What controls it? How to test it?
The reason I'm asking is that my Lombard 333 (O/C'd to 433) with 512
MB
running X.3.2 has been running at 100% CPU and heavy disk and CD
activity for about an hour now and the fan has yet to come on even for
a second. I lifted out the keyboard and the heat sink is
uncomfortable
to touch, especially over the CPU. I realize that this suggests that
the heat is being removed from the CPU, hopefully effectively, but I'm
concerned that it is getting too warm.

Now that I've had the keyboard open for a few minutes while writing
this (I have an external keyboard connected), the heat sink is
noticeably cooler. This really makes me wonder if my fan should be
running...
I wonder if that might be what leads to the failure of the L2 cache
in the processor, as is the problem with mine (According to Gauge Pro,
mine
runs at 55-65 Celcius). Is a fix possible of something like this, or
am I
stuck with replacement of the processor? Anyone have a spare 333 or
other
replacement processor on hand? TIA.

Property Management software / WTB DVD drive

2004-01-14 Thread Mike McGinnis
Hi Listers,
I'm in need of a DVD drive for my Lombard if you have one to sell
please contact me.

My current problem is the Property Management software I have been
using was not Y2K compliant. I was still using it even tho it had
reverted to 1900 instead of 2000. My problem came when 2004 started it
became confused and wouldn't work properly. I have looked around and
have found very little PM software available for Macs. If you are
currently using or know of a good program please contact me. Please
reply off list as this topic will probably have no interest for the
majority of listers.

TIA,
Mike McGinnis

Lombard Memory

2003-10-12 Thread Mike McGinnis
Hi All,

Will the memory from a Pismo work in a Lombard? The specs seem to be the
same except the Pismo is pc100 and the Lombard is pc66. Usually you can use
a higher speed dimm with no problem. I ask because there is a difference in
price with the slower memory being more expensive and somewhat harder to
find.

A follow up to a question I posed a week ago regarding orinoco gold
cards sold by Dell, it is working with my lombard however I had to use the
Orinoco drivers not the airport drivers to get it to work. I thought the
airport drivers were supposed to work on Orinoco cards.

Thanks for the help,

Mike Mac

Orinoco Gold

2003-09-29 Thread Mike McGinnis

Hi all,
As a new Lombard owner I have had no experience with Wi-Fi cards.
The preferred card seem to be the Orinoco Gold for those of us running
os 9.x. On ebay I see a plethora of Orinoco cards most are however
branded with another name, are these the same cards with someone else's
name on them or a different card entirely?

E.g.: Dell TrueMobile 1150 ORiNOCO Gold Card!NEW!

Thanks for helping out a newbie, Mike
