If you don't think the scratch is biggie, perhaps you can talk them
into giving you some cash for the damage and you can go on your merry
way... That would be something I would look into.

Re: Pismo w/Tiger - battery time reduced and not calculated

It's interesting. I experienced the same issue at the beginning but
then I got to exercise my battery by draining and charging it several

much time is left on the battery. It will show percent, but not time.
This has always been very accurate, but now is stuck 'calculating'.
Second, it seems that my runtime is significantly reduced - probably
around 50%. I remember seeing a similar thread, but I remember seeing
quite a bit of confirmation both ways.
I ran the cells down completely, hoping it was just some
software/calibration thing - didn't help.
I tried resetting the PMU... no different.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Login issues with Safari

2005-05-11 Thread Nima
I have noticed that with my Safari each time I go to a page to which
only subscribers have access, e.g., nytimes.com, blogger.com etc...,
Safari does not allow me to automatically log in and proceed. Rather
it takes me to the log-in page where my user ID and password appear
(they have been saved) and I have to press on the enter button. If
I close Safari, I will have to do this again. Cookies are enabled for
all pages.

Any ideas? It gets irritating after a few times.

Re: Put the Cat in the Book

2005-05-10 Thread Nima
Update on Dashboard.
I installed Amnesty ( http://www.mesadynamics.com/amnesty.htm ) and now
I am a completely happy camper. I am replacing Konfabulator with
Dashboard. You can configure Dashboard with Amnesty to have specific
widgets to remain on the desktop. This should have been an embedded
preference into Dashboard to begin with.

Brian wrote:
I re routed Dashboard to F8, so I wouldn't have to use the fn key to
activate it. Been happy with it. I've used the converter,
dictionary, calculator and weather reports quite a bit.

I have been using Spotlight--quite a bit.
So far, this has been the winning feature for me.

Safari is way faster--I mean that thing rocks. Although I am still
using Firefox because it is more intuitive and allows for more user
control.

I've always used Safari. I've personally had no issues with it.
Although I'm still irritated that there is no per domain allow/
deny popups feature. That's the one feature that I miss from using
Firefox

Mail is fine--I just wished there was next and previous buttons
AND some sort of an indication when it is checking the mail (I know
I can get the Activity Viewer but then I wished the window would
appear and then would disappear when finished).

I'm getting used to the new mail. I don't like how it looks compared
to the old one (looks too much like an add on application). I would
prefer to have my choice of where the folder list appears like I did
with Mail 1.0. There were times I wanted the folder bar to
disappear. I can't do that now.

Dashboard IS a toy. I have nixed it and went back to Konfabulator.
Why should I use two hands and press two buttons in order to get
the information that can easily be ready for viewing on the desktop
using Konfabulator?

I use the F12 key to activate my Dashboard. I'm not sure that I like
the implementation yet. I would like the desktop apps to pop up, but
not gray out everything else that I have going on. It's almost TOO
separate from my workspace, instead of being an addition.

I did an archive and install on my machine, after making a bootable
backup to an external drive with CCC. However, if I get some time,
I'll probably clear everything out backup my home directory, and
format my drive and do a clean install. I know there are some things
on here that I'm not using any more and that should be cleaned out.

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-04 Thread Nima
Well... On the date of the release of Tiger, at 6:00 p.m. I found
myself in line waiting for the Apple Store to re-open. They opened up
the store's door and about 200 or so of us faithfuls were in line and
under a general applause we entered the Store. The Apple personnel
were distributing some sort of scratch and win game... I won an iTune!

Upon entry, I proceeded to go straight to the counter and purchased
my fresh copy of Tiger. I came home soon thereafter, and installed on
my TiG4, 15, 1Ghz. I figured, bugs or no bugs, I will deal with it.
I did the same when 10 came out. Then the same when 10.2 came out.
The same with 10.3. Never had any issues (major ones) to deal with.

Some of us are crazy that way.

I purchased Tiger right away but did not install it right away.
The reason I did this was in order to ensure that I received a low-
price for a retail box version of the system. As there were
multiple dealers selling Tiger at ~$100 without requiring an
update, this was ideal for me.

My thinking is that I should grab this good price and then install
it later after a few bugs work themselves out.

Cheers!

from 9 to Puma (10.1) I ended up going back to 9 until Jaguar
(10.2.) came out; and I didn't go to Jaguar until about 7 months
after it was released. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that
people these days just can't wait to run down to the Apple Store

Obviously because you ask a hardware list something you should be

If this
list is turning a general software discussion list I shall be
unsubscribing. How come hardware has gotten such a low profile

this list?

Because no one is *asking* hardware questions. Nor is this list
exclusively hardware...look at the description on LEM:

iBooks.

What topics may be discussed?
Anything relating to portable Macs.
No mention of hardware-only limitations...

Do the current subsribers lack experience or what?
Oh, yes, less blame the list members for not meeting *your*
expectations.

Anyone know about a list with more focus on portable mac hardware?

So ask hardware questions if you want a discussion of some hardware
issue. What are you expecting here?

This isn't a recommendation at Stout, you must rent the computer from them
and the fee is hidden in your book fees which you have to pay as part of

The first year they had this policy, they had the laptop fee out in the open
as a separate charge, but they got so many complaints, that they hide the

persuaded by the film and music companies to more or less ban p2p

trade barriers. My friends are marketing their music trough these

The music industry as of now will wither and it's only time before the

Yes. You are right. Sharing music has a potential, although slim, to
hurt independent do-it-yourself artists. Although there are many
artists who have benefited from sharing by having been able to bypass
the monopoly the music industry exercises on distribution.

Many artists in all genres are producing and releasing CDs
independently. It can cost an independent artist tens of thousands of
dollars (or Euros, etc) to record and master their album. Thus the
artist needs to sell 1000-5000 CDs simply to break even. We're not
talking profit, just recouping costs. If someone copies a CD instead
of buying it, the potential that the big bad greedy music company
that is being ripped off is actually an artist with boxes of CDs
collecting dust in the basement.

battery and see the machine recognize it and use the charge, but it
won't recharge the battery.

When I turn off the computer, it remembers all the settings and what
not, so long as either it is plugged in or a charged battery is
installed. Otherwise, it is as if I have reset the PRAM.

Anyone know what part I need to change to solve the problem? Thanks!

Display weirdness!

2005-03-24 Thread Nima
Hello all,
I have what used to be a Wallstreet 233mhz 12.1 display.
I have upgraded it as follows
- 20 mb HD;
- 14.1 monitor;
- Sonnet W3-G3 500mhz board installed;
- 288 Ram;
I was using the Book with OS 9.2.2 and all was perfect.
I then upgraded to OS 10.2 and there is a weird thing happening which is
as follows:
When I turn on the computer, I get to see the gray apple logo with gray
background, and then the monitor goes all black. It remains black until
everything is loaded and then I have to MANUALLY, press the monitor
brightness button in order to get the monitor to come on. If I try hard
enough, I can see the shadow of what goes on on the monitor when it is
black.

Does anyone have a clue? The monitor functioned perfectly well under OS
9.2.2. Even now, if I start up using 9.2. this issue does not happen.

Weird... Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Well... that did fix it!!
Thanks.

This is a known issue with Wallstreet PBs under 10.2. The partial fix,
which seems to work for most people, is to restart under OS 9, put it
to sleep, wake it up again, and then restart again under X.

Cheers,
Ben

Souped up G3 Wallstreet

2005-03-08 Thread Nima
Hell everyone:
I have a G3 Wallstreet (the roadkill) which I have upgraded with a 20
gig HD, a Crescendo WS/G3 550 mghz board, 288 Ram, and have changed the
screen from the bogus 12 inch to the decent 14.1...

I am running OS 10.1.5... Does anyone think I will have any issues
installing 10.2.8? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
