Re: hidden files ?
Here's an example- the ipod. Every mp3 is stored on the ipod in a hidden, or 'invisible' folder named ipod_control (or controller, i cant remember) and then in a folder named music, then in a series of folders starting with F0#. In mac os 6 through 9.2.2, get yourself a copy of resedit2.1.3. Open it up, then from the file menu select 'get info for...' and navigate around until you select the invisible folder or file you dont want to have hidden anymore. Then it's information will appear. One checkbox will read 'invisible' so uncheck it, close the window, and save the changes. Back out on the finder, the file or folder will now be visible. Here's a word of caution- if you make something visible, chances are that there was a reason why it was invisible to begin with. So make a copy of the file/folder, and re-hide the original. That way, you have a backup to screw around with. Thats always been the rule of thumb- when working with Resedit, always make a copy of what you're working on first and work with the copy. This is especially true with system resources. (ie. change the trash can's icon, the startup picture, put sunglasses on the apple menu (thanks mac addict) or add shortcuts to any menu item.) write me off list with any more questions about resedit and i'll be glad to answer them. -Dylan PS- for those of you who use X, whats the resedit equiv. if there is one? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lombard Options?
Hey all. I have a 333 Bronze (lombard), with 320 ram. What are my options, if any, to upgrade it to a faster processor? A story that makes me want to buy apple stock
In a message dated 10/9/02 7:11:35 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Some of the early Bronze Lombard machines had a faulty processor or processor card that causes freezing under OSX with certain RAM configurations. This has been often discussed here and elsewhere. Try a search on MacFixit or MacInTouch message boards. I have heard that Apple will still replace these processor cards even though the machine is past warranty if you plead, rant, rave, etc. enough. I did indeed stay up until 6 am reading post upon post from lombard users that could not get X to work on their machines- and their machines all had the same symptoms that mine did. I continued to read on, as each of them told of their calls into apple to get their processor cards replaced, that some were being charged 350$ (and as a poor college student, that was out of the question) and some were NOT being charged. Because I am such a late adopter to mac os X, I would be calling into apple nearly a year later, which worried me a bit. The problem is, if anyone else is having it, is that the processors made in march of 1999 (serial number QT935--, even if that doesn't signify date) all have a problem with their MPU. replacing this errant version 2.2 with a refurbished 2.2, 3.0, or 3.1 card is supposed to make os X work like a dream. I called apple, and within 50 minutes, they had bounced me to a service rep and agreed to send out a box for me to send in my bronze, replace the card, and send it back within a week at no cost to me- keep in mind that I have no apple care nor limited warranty. Good shit. Keep in mind that although I've done my fair share of complaining about X, I decided to still go through this to give it my best shot, the main reasons being an off-list discussion with Laurent, and the fact that I felt that apple was going beyond its duties for me so I should owe them another shot. I hope this card replacement will do the trick. Oh yeah, on another important note- lots of people on the lists I read talked about apple replacing their hinges without being asked to nor charging the users, usually as a side note. Is there some reason for this? If there is, will apple be doing likewise to my hinges? Thanks guys, for pointing me in the right direction once again!! -Dylan (= -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... ARGH! Please help me.... sob sob
Hey there, I think its fair to say that I went into this process of installing mac os X, which I've had nothing but problems with in the past, in a positive mind set. But after installing it on my laptop, I have officially lost faith in Apple's ability to make a functional operating system (its just gone down hill from os 8...) This is my last hope- that you guys can help me- and I'm willing to bet that you can ( = This is what I am working on: A 333 bronze powerbook, 4.5gig hd 320mb ram 24x CD no additional cards, no airport I installed mac os 9.2.1 and X.04 first. Well, sort of. it took freezing twice before I got it on my hard drive. Then, I upgraded to 10.1. This time, I got the most non-mac-like error of my life: at the end of the install, a few lines of dos style text dropped over the pristine interface, reading roughly that something 'failed, operations halted, panic, awaiting remote debugger.' I dont think that this is a kernel panic, as I thought it was a bit more graphic than some text. Nonetheless, it froze. I restarted and began to install again. This time it worked just fine, and I was greeted with a new mac os X desktop. I really like the look and feel of X, and people keep telling me that jag is the way to go, and it really speeds things up. So then came the next part- jag. I inserted CD 1, checked for firmware updates, of which there were none, and proceeded to install. Wow, what a cool start up! I love the apple and spinning line design! truly simple and elegant. Well, mid install, it froze and I got to see the start up again as i went to install a second time. woo hoo! This time it worked like a charm, getting through both CDs and to the desktop. Very cool, I have to admit that it IS much more responsive. I clicked on sherlock to see what apple did that was new in 3, and it said it needed an internet connection. I was a bit confused, so I hit apple-f and was rewarded by a system 7.6-esque find function- I was very happy to see that, as I wasn't really crazy about sherlock to begin with. I went back to sherlock- and the computer froze. I restarted, then went into system control panels to change my clock style- and it froze. I restarted, and this time it lasted more than 30 seconds, nearly 4 minutes. That ended once I clicked on the apple menu. Froze again. I dont get it. What am I missing? is there some sort of 'dont freeze randomly' option I have to find in the control panel? I think there should be. Also important to note, I formatted the hd before starting this whole X fiasco, even taking the time to zero all data. Aside from my complaint that it should NOT take an assembly language programer's level of computer expertise to get an operating system on a clean computer, it obviously does and I sadly lack that expertise. I can write hello world. I need to use this computer for classes soon and would *like* to use 10.2 because it actually can sleep and wake up, unlike 9.2. I would appreciate any help- I'm just really stressed out over this. Thanks guys, I owe you a million! -Dylan ps- meanwhile i will d/l 10.2.1 update and see if that helps. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I need massive amounts of information
Hey there, As most of you know, I'm that guy who still claims apple had it right in OS 7.6... Having said that, I might be ready to take the plunge into mac OS X! A little history: When i bought my quicksilver last summer, it had 10 on it... but it never started up right and eventually took 4 complete wipes and the decision that X was evil before I could actually use my wonderful new computer. Granted, I hate 9, but i hate it less than X. Now, i wont even consider putting X on my QS, but I will try it on my bronze. As I have pretty much shunned X, I am somewhat (and it is hard to admit, being such a mac fan that I am) out of the loop as far as X is concerned. So, i am hoping that you guys can give me as much info as I need to keep my laptop from exploding, or me from taking a large magnet to my hard drive. Here's what I'm working with 10.1.5, not jag. a 333 bronze 216MB ram 4 gig HD, (I'll partition like so: 2gig for X, 500 for 9, and 1.5 for docs/music) I would appreciate personal experience, especially using photoshop (in classic.. grr). And finally, If I adopt X, I really want to exploit all of its features such as the terminal. I'm pretty much a power user (I must have 5 or 6 copies of resedit on this comp and MPW, code warrior, mac os bugs, etc.) So if you can send me some info on navigating with terminal, it would be much appreciated. if you would ratehr send me any terminal commands off list, that will work too. For all of you who didn't know- Battery reconditioning/restting
Hey guys, anyone with a reduced battery and doesn't know about resetting it might want to read this. Well, i was faced with a 7-12 minute battery for my 333 bronze and two 70 minute lectures to take notes... and the decision of buying a new M7318 for 127$. So as a last ditch attempt to save my poor battery (which was stored nearly empty for nearly two years before I bought the whole thing from someone), I looked up how to reset the power manager and how to recondition my battery. I know many of you out there know this already, in fact, thats how i knew what to look for. For those people who are new to the powerbook arena, such as myself, this is what I found. Apple Tech document 14449 contains specific information on resetting the power manger for every powerbook made. (100- Ti G4 DVI) For a bronze, there is a button between the s-vid out and modem. With the power adapter connected (I had the battery loaded also,) press the button. the power light blinks once. Wait no less than five seconds, then turn it on. DONT turn it on before 5 seconds! the reset will fail. (And if it does, just turn it off, press the button again and exercise more patience... geeze.. (= ) Download a software component called Battery Reset 2.0. Go to supportdownloads, then the complete list of current downloads (link at the bottom-ish), click you nationality (i click english north american) macintosh powerbooks PB_g3 series batteryreset.smi.bin. Connect the AC adapter and load the battery. Then turn on the laptop and install battery reset 2.0. It will restart and load Battery Rest automatically. Click what side you want to reset and it will do its thing. I think it is supposed to take awhile- mine took no more than .25 seconds to reset- maybe that should tell me how shot my battery is ( ; It will completely drain the battery and reset it's microprocessor (i believe) that reports to the bronze about its current capacity. Now the important step- LET THE BATTERY RECHARGE COMPLETELY. dont interrupt it. dont unplug the AC. dont take out the battery. not for a second. dont look at it funny and/or cross-eyed. Keep in mind that mine is actually still charging. I take this as a good thing, as it usually takes it an hour to charge to full (10 minutes of life) and it's been charging now for about 70 minutes and the first light has only stopped blinking. Which means it has a while to go. I have to go to sleep, as I have an 8 am class tomorrow. So I will update you all on if/how well this procedure works. Right now, i'm really hoping for the best. Thanks+A sleeping issue
Thank you for helping me out with the screen problem. Now the only issue my bronze has is a sleeping issue. Unlike the insomnia that I hear some other laptops have, mine is a sound sleeper- it wont wake up without a restart! When I close the lid or choose 'sleep', it goes to sleep just fine. But then when I wake it back up under 8.6, I get just a grey screen and nothing loads. I thought that maybe upgrading OS's would help, so I installed 9.2.1. Now it *partially* loads back up, but parts of the screen held back for windows remain grey and the machine is frozen. Once it actually woke up, but the finder had unexpectedly quit. Any and all help would be much appreciated. lombard battery
Hey, i'm buying a powerbook g3 lombard, which is the reason that I originally joined this list, and it turns out that the battery might not work too well. This is the situation: He hasn't used it too much, and just kept it stored for over a year. I assume that it wasn't fully charged. Therefore, it might hold 30 minutes max. Aside from conditioning it (completely charging and discharging it)and setting the energy saver settings lower, is there another way to get more time out of the battery? I plan on running Mac OS X, but I hear that batteries suffer on X. As a matter of fact, i don't know how well X would run on a 333 lombard. any comments? If I have to go and buy a new battery, what is the best way to get one (so I dont get one that dies in less than a year) and cheap, so that I can actually eat for the month? And finally, just from the experience from those on the list, is there anything else I need to know about buying a used powerbook? OOf
Hey guys. I just decided to check my mailbox and I have over thirty messages. I was good though, I read all of them before answering. And cause I'm new to the list, I had to ask something... DO YOU ALWAYS TAKE THIRTY POSTS ABOUT SOME ISSUE BEFORE ENOUGH PEOPLE TELL YOU TO STOP, BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY STOP? okay. thanks, sorry. Here's where I stand. 1. I'm sorry, I don't know much about pismo laptop's hard drives. 2. the coolpad sounds neat, I'll look it up when I get my 'new-to-me' laptop. 3. I also have a g4 desktop that has a flatscreen. Usually, if I have a crt, I turn it off when leaving- just a habit so I don't burn an image in (even though I hear its tough to do so). With the flat screen, its different, so I usually sleep the computer in-between uses, if I'm not rendering- if I am, I just set the display sleep time to 5 min and harddrive to never. That works well. 4. I think I really want to say something about the quick political jab tossed in here. One, America is one of the most wasteful countries on the planet. Doesn't matter how you slice it, or how much you're willing to pay for the bills, we're not being responsible. If you're not using something, turn it off. There's no other need to have it on, right? And this includes sleep if you're in that camp like me- sleep uses much less energy than awake, and a fractional amount more than off. When the middle east was mentioned, I think the reference was not on the Arab-Israeli conflict, but our dependence on the oil that is produced in countries that could very easily cripple us with cutting us off. And as far as global warming, I won't touch this one. I don't have hard numbers, which I'm sure at least one of you would demand from me. What I do know is that much of our energy comes either from burning coal, which produces the toxins in acid rain and adds to global warming, or nuclear reactions that produce thousands of tons of radioactive waste that the engineers are *not quite sure* how to get rid of them. So I think that from an ecological, economical, and ethical standpoint, it just wouldn't be right to leave things on all the time, especially when we don't need to. That's my opinion, I hope that others share that, but if you don't, please don't tell me to go watch more propaganda advertisements. They really have nothing to do with either turning off or leaving on your Macs. Thanks guys, talk to you later. -Dylan Don't personify computers They hate that! -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: lombard hinges dying?
I'm sorry, but after reading david's e-mail, I just couldn't stop cracking up! I'm sure this will start a flame war about somebody's Mac512k that is not obsolete, but those of us in the real world need to have machines which will run modern software at modern speeds. The rest of Mayberry may want to use an LCII and consider it modern, but it isn't. Oh yeah, that's obsolete, I'll agree with you. But one thing that apple has always been strong in is durability. That's why we still HAVE our performas and quadras and powerbook 520c's and why maybe two people have their old 386 packard bell's. Apple's products are just overall much more reliable. So I can understand why someone would be concerned that their apple product has a specific part that might wear out. Its not really as common as other household products. Maybe YOUR car runs 350,000 miles without needing a new timing belt, but mine doesn't. Perhaps your car goes 400,000 miles without having the shocks get a little springy. Mine doesn't. If apple made cars, I bet mine would wouldn't need a new belt, and I bet the shocks would be comfortable ( = . Then again, if microsoft built cars, they would be ten dollars, go a million miles an hour, and crash every month, killing all the passengers. (Sorry, I couldn't resist!) I happened to look at the spec's on my Pismo this afternoon. It's a 2000, 500mhz, and the drive is a 6month old 30gig fujitsu. It shows just over 4.8MILLION writes to the drive. That's not read/writes--that's JUST writes. Anyone care to comment on how they'd feel after 4million of ANYTHING? Well, since you asked... At this point I just started laughing. I mean, I can understand your points, but don't get so carried away, buddy. 4.8 million bucks would make me feel pretty damned good. And also, I don't see how the hard drive has anything to do with the hinges- Hard drives get written to and even to write a megabyte, it will have accessed 1024 byte locations and written to each. Heck, those megabytes add up, don't they? I think you see where I'm going with that one. Especially cause you know how your pismo's hard drive really has too much to do with a lombard's hinges. Get a grip people. A laptop running the equivalent of a third lifetime is going to have a few problems! Even if it is a Mac, it's not perfect! Well, we weren't freaking out or selling our lombards or crying hysterically in our houses, so don't tell us to get a grip. It just annoys me. Oh yeah, and I don't think anyone can consider the shelf life of a product to be its lifetime. My quicksilver dual 800's G4 is running the same up to date software like adobe 6 and lightwave as the quicksilvers released a year later. Again, I think you know that I just consider everything you wrote from about two paragraphs previous to this to be overkill and inaccurate. And considering that they can be replaced for less than $100, it's probably not worth whining about too much. If I were bent double [over?] four or five times a day, then slung in a backpack and bounced across town, I'd probably fail after three or four years. What about you? Well, I hardly consider two or three concerned e-mails to be whining. Oh yea, and us students usually DO have to bend over for our five times a day with a bookbag and so far I haven't failed. I mean, wouldn't have said anything about that, but you asked What about you? ( : Okay, that's all for me. Thanks for being such a good sport, I think you can recognize that everyone gets a little over zealous once and again ( = -Dyl Don't Personify computers, they hate that. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
