VHS tapes into Pismo

2005-12-30 Thread Tony Coult
Advice please - I want to save some VHS tape material onto my Pismo
(and attached LaCie hard disk). What is the simplest way of doing
this? I guess I need to hook my VHS recorder to the Pismo, but via
which outputs/imputs? What software do I use? And what format do I
end up with? I have a PCMCIA card with USB 2.0 sockets on but I'm not
looking for speed. UK-based so that might affect hardware
availability. Thanks for any help offered and Happy New Year to all
readers of this. Tony Coult.

Re: Pismo/External DVD

As the original poster of this question, I may have had a buried memory
about mention of the DVD player's unhappiness with external drives,
which Luis now revives. Does anyone have direct experience with the

Dodgy DVD Players

2004-12-03 Thread Tony Coult
From time to time people - me included -have asked for help with
non-functioning DVD players in Pismo Powerbooks. I thought mine had
died again (Matsushita replaced LG as recommended). I've just upped the
RAM from 192 to 640. Suddenly CDs mount, DVDs play again. Mind, I had a
scary morning as nothing happened at all after I'd put the RAM in first
time. After about five disassemblies/reassemblies it all sprang to life
again. Phew! So the moral seems to be - if your CD/DVD Player won't
work, try more RAM.

Re: Wireless on a Pismo

2004-03-10 Thread Tony Coult
The Airport card (old) in my Pismo had been acting up, failing to make
its presence known, 8 times out of 10 restarts. I'm not sure if its a
faulty card or a faulty internal physical connection. So I replaced it
with a Linksys 802.11g PCMCIA card. A bit expensive here in the UK at c
£70 but I could have bought another Airport card and it might still
have not worked. Panther and Airport seem to recognise the Linksys card
without any other software (Linksys doesn't provide anything for
Mac...) Best wishes Tony C

Binatone card in lieu of Airport

2004-01-05 Thread Tony Coult
Because my Airport card connection seems faulty, I've been on the
lookout for a PC card substitute for my Pismo. Saw a card in a sale at
Maplin's for only £12 and bought it on the off chance that it might be
a badged card that would work in the Mac. It's a Binatone WL1000 and it
has a little green light that suggests that it is picking up the
Airport signal. But the connection isn't recognised. The software is
PC-only. Does anyone know of software that will make this card work?

Dying Airport card

Anyone can help? At first intermittently, now more or less permanently,
the Airport card on my Pismo won't show up as being present. I've
swapped it for another card I know is good so it's not the card that's
faulty. It won't show under 9.2.2. or Panther. It's not Panther as such
as it's worked fine for the several weeks I've had it. Should I
reinstall Panther?

Re: Pismo HD question

2003-11-25 Thread Tony Coult
I have the identical drive except that it is 40g. When my old one
started to rattle and hum, I replaced it myself with a new one. I
followed the instructions-with-pix on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ and
its worked a treat since. Quiet and reliable, bar one terrible day
after I'd partitioned the disc and it suddenly lost my second -
critical - partition. The guy who rescued my data said don't partition,
and don't as I did run Norton to try and rescue things. So I didn't. I
now have Panther on it and it's a pleasure. Enjoy! TONY

Crash! went the HD

2003-08-11 Thread Tony Coult
Thanks to an excellent Data recovery service in Hertfordshire, UK, (email me
for the reference if you want it) I've just emerged unscathed from a
potentially disastrous hard disk wipeout. The experience might be
instructive.
Pismo running OS9.1. Recently-installed 40 gig hard disk. Importing some
tracks from CD into iTunes when it crashed. Restarted only to get the
flashing I can't find an OS folder. Never seen this in my life before.
Fiddled about a bit to no avail then decided to install an OS on the second
of the two partitions I'd set up for the new drive. Started up from this ok.
(Though ominously getting a This disk is unreadable do you want to
initialise it? box first. Said no of course) However, my Entourage emails
weren't present - presumably on the now-dead OS on Partition 1.So I ran Disk
Doctor on Partition 1 hoping to cure it. It found some major problems and
instructed me to fix them. I did (but didn't make a note of what they were
sadly). Restarted and - oh horror! - the first partition, with my work on,
had disappeared. Apple system profiler said it was not mounted. Well I
could see that...
My rescuer in Hertfordshire got it back for me, reformatted the disk,
installed Os 9.2.2 and all seems well. What is interesting is that he said
almost all the problems he'd seen of similar type were on partitioned disks.
This is contrary to what we are told. Partition a new disk. But I needed
no persuasion. No partitions! Any comments? Any speculations as to why this
all happened?TONY

Re: LG DRN-8080B Pismo DVD UK source

2003-02-28 Thread Tony Coult
I've looked at that page and can't find any reference to an Apple (Pismo)
drive. If there was one for that very cheap price I would be kicking myself
because I've just shelled out £190 for one - also refurbished - from Micro
Anvika in London. (However this is the Matsushita drive apparently, not the
notoroius LG drive, of which I've gone through three!). I will report on
progress with my new drive to add to the discussion. TONY COULT

Pismo DVD: Mats vs LG Round One

2003-02-28 Thread Tony Coult
Ongoing report on Matsushita Pismo DVD drive, as promised. It cost £160, not
£190, plus VAT. It had a white sticker over the model number which
unfortunately got mangled when I put it in the machine. However the model
number on the case is M7388(MKE(hash)CR-175). The box says Made in Japan,
but the module says Assembled in Taiwan. There is a black sticky label
saying PowerBook DVD-ROM Module. Underneath is the original wording:
Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series 24X CD-ROM Module. This suggests, does it,
that Apple took an older, unused casing and put DVD hardware in? Hence it
being described as Refurbished. The casing looks new. It fits much more
snugly than my old, dead LG modules. At first it would not appear to eject
properly and there was a nightmare halfhour where everything seemed to jam
up and even the power button wouldn't function. It seems that, unlike the
looser-toleranced LGs, which spat the discs out, the Mats just grunts twice
and you have to pull it open from underneath. So far it does everything
fine, though DVD playback seems jerky on some discs. I think this may be
software rather than hardware. We shall see. TONY

UK Pismo pals

2003-01-29 Thread Tony Coult
Does anyone anywhere know of a good source in the UK for these items?
1. The MCE Pismo Expansion bay Hard drive
2. Replacement batteries
3. Any DVD/CD drive that actually works rather than grinding (that's what it
sounds like) to a halt after two days use
4. The best replacement hard drive (c. 30-40G)
Thanks! TONY

Re: Broken sound-out jack on Powerbook Firewire 2000 (Pismo)

2003-01-27 Thread Tony Coult
There's two things wrong with my brilliant Pismo - the useless DVD/CD drive
(on my third, and useless one), and the wobbly Sound Out. The answer to the
latter is the Griffin iMic. Small, self-powered, and makes the sound better.
Though it does, of course, use up a USB port. TONY3ts

Re: Broken sound-out jack on Powerbook Firewire 2000 (Pismo)

2003-01-27 Thread Tony Coult
Well, it's partly subjective, I admit. It sounds cleaner to my ears. Griffin
say its better because it takes the output away from the general buzz of
electronic impurities inside the case. It may also be that the USB out is
better than the phono? Tony
