format a Hitachi drive in a firewire case on a Pismo?
Hello, I have bought a new Hitachi drive for my Pismo (listed as compatible on OWC) and put it in an external Sarotech firewire case. However, it doesn't show up with Disk Utility in OSX10.3.9. Then I re-started from a 10.3.2 installer CD, twice by holding down the C key, and it is not seen with Disk Utility. I also re-started in OS9.22 and Drive SetUp did not see it to format it. Pismo hard drive- replace with a Toshiba?
Hello, There have been discussions concerning replacing a Pismo hard drive and the need for an ATA5 rather than ATA6 drive. Has anyone tried a Toshiba drive with a multi interface of ATA 2/3/4/5/6 like the Toshiba 40GB 2.5 Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD MK4025GAS? One specification sheet said it was ATA6, but the seller said it was multiinterface. Also, I think it is 4200 rpm. repair a yo-yo AC adapter?
Hello, The end plug into my Pismo powerbook suffered when someone tripped over the cord. That end will now produce sparks. Tiger install fails on Pismo??
Hello, I have two 512 mb ram modules in my Pismo= 1 gb and they are recognised fine in OS9.22. However, I can't install Tiger in a drive partitioned into two. There is OS 9.22 on the second partition of 8 gb and a 32 gb space for OS10.4 on the first. While the Tiger installation proceeds to the end, when trying to start up it always shows the Prohibatory sign and the circle keeps turning. To find the Trash can in OS9.1 I would suggest a search with Sherlock- Hold down the Apple (Command) key and the F (Find) key. That should bring up a Find dialogue box. When you type in 'Trash' and press 'Search' it should show you where the Trash Can is now located. Pismo screen- repair or replace?
Hello, I would appreciate advice re a Pismo screen. When starting up, the screen is a deep red color, then as it warms up, the color becomes normal. I understand this is a symptom of a failing screen. However, the screen itself has no keyboard marks or dead pixels, so I was wondering if I should try to replace the whole screen OR buy a part for a repair. If the advice is to repair it, exactly what part do I need to buy to fix this problem? From whom and at what cost? Also, what level of difficulty is involved in the repair? Pismo memory question
Hello, I have recently acquired a 500 mhz Pismo running 10.4.2 and would appreciate members' opinions on the following: 1. Memory- installed are two 128 mb ram cards for a total of 256 mb ram. I have an additional 256 mb LP PC100 32x64 CL2 SDRAM SO DIMM piece of ram, yet when I installed it in the top memory slot of the Pismo the machine froze after starting up with Tiger. The Pismo had worked before with only 256 mb of ram. thought the ram for the G3 ibook 300 mhz should work with the Pismo. I also have tried another 512 mb PC133 piece of ram a dealer said would work, but the Pismo only saw half of it. Pismo screen, case, Belkin questions
Hello, I have recently acquired a 500 mhz Pismo running 10.4.2 and would appreciate members' opinions on the following: 2. The screen- When started the screen is suffused with a red color, whether starting in Tiger or OS9.22. Then the red fades and the screen takes on the usual display and behaves normally. Is this vibrant red a sign of imminent screen failure and if so, what will need replacement? 3. The bottom case is separated near the trackpad and down to the bottom edge. It looks like this is the join line of the plastic as it is a straight line, rather than any jagged edge. Do people open the case and try to glue or tape these parts together, will it create a weakness when lifting the machine, or should I buy a new bottom case? 4. It came with a Belkin 54g F5D7010, 802.11g Wireless Notebook Network PCMCIA Card, but when I insert it there is no indication that it is seen, nor that Airport software works with it. Pismo ram and Tiger question
Hello, I have just installed a larger memory module into my Pismo running 10.4.2. It had two 128 mb modules = 256 mb ram total. Therefore, I put in one 256 mb from my ibook G3 300 mhz, leaving the other 128 mb in place = total 384 mb. With the 256 mb only, it ran Tiger. However, once I put the other 256 mb in, it starts up fine, lets me log in and then the cursor freezes. I wondered it if was bad ram, but then why does it boot up? Hello, Has anyone used a Clearlight brand 2.5 HDD Series firewire external plastic drive case? (model IMPT 2500FRHIDE 1394/Firewire). I can't get the drive to be recognised in OSX or OS9 on a Pismo or a 900 mhz ibook G3. There is a driver for use with 9, but that hasn't worked and in OSX it doesn't show up at all. Others have mentioned suitable replacement drives for the Pismo. What about the Sony CRX820E? The Matshita SR-8174-C drive and sled (you'll need both) is the other major OEM drive that was used on the Pismo and will fit perfectly. The SR-8174-C 6X Mfgd 2000 (Pismo) and the SR-8173-C ?X Mfgd 1999 (Lombard) both seem to work well. I am setting up a Pismo for Windows user who has a Windows mp3 player. I have been asked if this will work on the Pismo. Hopefully someone can give me a definitive answer. 1. The person bought an mp3 player about two years ago (it may be called a Lyra). The player is listed as compatible with Windows 98E, XP, ME, or 2000. The person wants to use the software to transfer music from the CDs she owns to this mp3 player, rather than downloading music from the internet. Would this mp3 player work on the Mac if the software CD was installed through Virtual PC v6.1? 2. The software CD is 'Music Management Software' by RCA. The program is 'Musicmatch'. I was wondering if iTunes software ever had luck connecting with other mp3 players, rather than an ipod? 3. Or, can she insert her audio CD and copy a song to itunes, then somehow export it to the Windows mp3 player? Hello, I'm setting up a Pismo for someone and would like to ask: 1. I have an Orinoco Wifi card 11Mbit/s Silver Lucent Technologies. Should I use the latest Airport software for this, or the Orinoco drivers version 7.2? 2. Will this card only work in OS9, or are there drivers for OSX, such as the Airport drivers? 3. Is this the card that can be 'set to a higher enryption level' by inserting it into an ibook Airport slot and opening the Airport software to configure it, according to the website listed here several times? 4. Hello, My Pismo modem is working in OS9, installed on a separate partition. However, in OSX 10.3.8, when I try to dial into the ISP I get the message that the modem cannot detect a dial tone. Hello, I have just received a Pismo 400 mhz, 256 mb, running system 9.22 and I have a few queries. 1. When the battery indicator is pushed, one (of the four) battery indicator light flashes. Does this mean the battery is dead? The control strip shows the battery as charging, but it still keeps flashing. 2. When turned on, the screen immediately dims, which I think is normal. Then during the startup process the screen goes to a blank gray screen four times, twice while loading 'Welcome to OS 9.22', which I have not seem on another Pismo. Hello, I have seen two Wallstreet powerbooks and they had different, but both in English, keyboards- on the bottom row one has a symbol for both Option keys and the Enter key. In the next row there is a symbol for the Shift keys and the tilde/accent key is located next to the 'z', instead of in the upper left. In the next row there is a symbol for the CapsLock key and an extra key with line symbols. Thus the Return key is shaped like an upside down L to fit the extra key. In the next row the Tab key has a symbol and the keys with lines symbols is missing (it's already in the row below). In the next row there is an unlabelled key with an underlined addition symbol and a swirl. The Delete key has a symbol. The top row of F keys are all labelled the same- both in numbers and the English writing above. Were these keyboards made for different countries or different models? ibook 500 mhz US AC adapter cord question
Hello, I have an ibook dual usb 500 mhz. I have a 65W portable power adapter for Australia but I want to use this in the US soon. I believe that I can use the square white Adapter, but I need a cord that is compatible for the US plugs. query re Wallstreet speed
Hello, Would anyone be able to help me tell what speed a 14 inch screen Wallstreet model is, as the laptop won't turn on? I think it needs a new logic board but inside it does not have the speed written on it. When looking through the PC card door, down at the bottom of the case, the serial number inside is CK8241AE898A (?) - that last look like an M. When I double click a saved web page, and Expose moves the Explorer windows to the center, I see a file behind them which is labelled Hidden. I can't find it to delete it, just see it. questions re ibook oddities
Hello, I have an ibook (900mhz, 640 mb ram) running Jaguar. After it had been left in Sleep, when I tapped a key to resume work the screen was filled with rolling, jagged lines and double images. I tried to find the shut down menu and it shut down. It started up ok the next day. The technician at Apple said that it could have been a program or the Finder crashing and there was no problem. Does that sound right? Secondly, last night I was transferring files from another powerbook (OS9) via ethernet. It would not let me copy of the System folder nor any file that might be in use for File Sharing, saying I did not have the permission to do so. However, I have always copied over System folders for back up purpoes before. Then, just after midnight the message appeared that I must Shut Down the powerbook by holding the powerkey for several seconds. I did that and then reconnected via ethernet. OSX on a Kanga partition?
Any advice please: I want to try to install OSX onto my Kanga powerbook using XPostFacto. I have a 20 gb hard drive partitioned into 2. Now I have OS 9.1 and 9.2 each on a partition. I have an OSX 10.1 CD and a 10.2, but the instructions say that if OSX is installed on an older powerbook with a partitioned drive, it must be within the first 8 g. I have 2 partitions, but they are both 10 g. 1. Does that mean I will have to reformat the drive and make one partition only 8 gb or less? 2. some more Kanga questions
Could someone please answer some Kanga questions: 1. I see from the Service Manual that the in the Environmental section on page 43, it says the shipping, non- operating altitude is 15,000 feet maximum and I wanted to send it by Fed Ex from Australia to America. Does this mean you can't ship by air a powerbook without it being in a pressurised airline cabin? 2. I do not have double sided tape for the bottom of the keyboard so it touches the expansion ram module to keep it in place. Will any brand of double sided tape do? 3. I do not have a plastic insulation sheet for the hard drive. Will a bit of clear plastic from the front of a school folder do, or will it cause a heat problem?
