Airport problem with 10.4.3
After upgrading to 10.4.3, I lost the ability to connect to my Base Station. I noticed that shortly after the release of 10.4.3, there was an update for Airport and installed it, but it made no difference. Also, like other people, I received a message about airport needing access to my keychain. I thought nothing of it, because it seemed quite normal, since there was a new version of the Airport software, and authorized it. I believe there is something wrong with the new Airport software and would like to know if more people are having the same problem. I workaround for similar cases has been to grab the appropriate file from a previous version and substitute for the problematic one, so I would appreciate help in determining which file(s) might be needed. I do have another mac still running 10.4.2, so I migth grab the file from it (alas, this other mac - a BW - does not have Airport, so I cannot use it for testing the Base Station). I'm on digest, so on replying to the list I'd appreciate if you could cc: me. Re: Airport problem with 10.4.3
Fairly common complaint for most upgrades. Try this: 1 access your base station via ethernet. 2 change the channel on the base station. 3 try and connect via your airport card. This should solve the problem. I usually fixed the problem in the past for most people that lost the connection after an upgrade. Re: Airport Problem
Laurent: Chill. Check your solder joints on that ABS. The caps may have degraded or there may be a short between the terminals. Suspect that they are used to condition the input power for the ABS, so any shorts will be reducing the power available for running the circuits. I've replaced my caps twice in a graphite ABS with the latest set being of a far greater voltage than the originals. Test the ABS disassembled as well. You may be moving the caps in an inappropriate way when you close the internal clamshell. I actually cut holes in the clamshell to accomodate my first set of replacement caps as they were too big to fit. The first set didn't fail - they were a temporary solution. If all else fails, try a hard reset on that ABS. Maybe the firmware got rattled to a low power setting that was mentioned in another post. Thanks, Frank! Glad to hear from someone else who also repaired his ABS. Actually, I had a lot of problems to get enough solder into the board holes to hold the capacitors. I don't know if there is a trick when you do that, or maybe in removing the older capacitors, I did make the holes a little larger, but if there is a trick, I certainly don't know about it. Also, since you seem more knowledgeable than me about this, if you know a sure way to do any measurement after replacing the capacitors that would tell me whether my solder is good or not, I would greatly appreciate. I think that's is the only thing missing from the web site I used to do the repair. Again, I could certainly use your assistance to verify my (maybe poor) work. Thanks again! -Laurent. -- Laurent: Just check for continuity between a capacitor lead and a circuit board trace near the solder joints. A zero reading should indicate that your work is OK - not for sure, but good enough for our purposes. More importantly, check for any shorts between the cap leads or solder points as these are possible problems. Not sure if there are any internal foils on this card that are relevant, but you should examine that the solder appears to have bonded to pads on both sides of the board (if present). Check http://www.seanadams.com/deadairport/ for more tips. Also would check the functioning of the unit before you close it, and do be sure to upgrade the voltage rating of the caps relative to the original ones. Also, you did respect the polarity of the electrolytic capacitors? - they do have positive and negative terminals, indicated on the cap and usually on the board F. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Since you already seem to have an extra WaveLAN card, why don't you install it in the PCMCIA port in your Pismo and see if that helps, which will either pinpoint the problem with your internal antenna, or eliminate it? Laurent Is there any adjustment in the card software to adjust the transmit power? On my cisco card's software I can adjust the transmit power from 1mW to 100 mW, which I would assume dramatically effects the signal strength. Well, I've got no reaction from the system when I tried it in my Pismo. The PCMCIA card menu did appear in the menu bar but the only option was to power down the card, or something like that. In any case, if anybody is interested, I just confirmed that my internal AirPort card and its internal antenna just works fine. I saw a co-worker a few minutes ago which also brings his Pismo to work. So, I did create a network and he was easily able to connect to it from over 50 feet. Ouf! AirPort problem
I've been having problems with my graphite AirPort Base Station. I had to replace the 2 blown capacitors to make it work again. I'm not using it much since it is much faster to use built-in Ethernet when moving large files between my PowerBook and my Blue White (both at 100Mbps). Last weekend, I had to temporary move to a different room with my Pismo. I then realized that I was unable to connect to my ABS. I did disassemble it to see if something was wrong from my repair or otherwise. Didn't find anything. I tried using another Wavelan card in it to no avail. Then, by pure coincidence, I found out that if I would put it within 2 feet of my Pismo, I was able to connect to it. Moving the base station a couple of feet and I would lose the signal completely. Using Internet Connect and KisMAC, I did monitor the signal while moving it out and in both software, the signal drops to nothing all of a sudden. I then proceeded to open my Pismo to check my internal AirPort card. I did unplug the internal antenna. Everything seems to be fine. Is it possible that the internal antenna wire has been broken up, resulting in that bad reception? I haven't been rough or anything with my Pismo, taking it to work every day but that's pretty much it. Although, a couple of months ago, I had to reseat the processor daughtercard. The base station is sitting where it has always been sitting. There are no new phone or anything that could cause interference. So, did anybody ever experience something like this? -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] creationism n.: The (false) belief that large, innovative software designs can be completely specified in advance and then painlessly magicked out of the void by the normal efforts of a team of normally talented programmers.
