This is a new problem for me -- I've never seen it before. Whenever I insert a blank disk in my PowerBook (Pismo) or in my external QueFire burner, it is not recognized. Have you checked your system preferences? In CDs and DVDs you can set the action your Mac takes when you insert a blank disc. Perhaps the problem machine is set to ignore it. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... It is possible you have a hardware problem but it is quite possible we are both unaware of some other sort of solution. Amber Misery loves company, I guess. Don¹t see how it could be a hardware problem in my case since both my internal and external drives are behaving the same way! Total guess, have you tried http://www.patchburn.de/ ? According to their website, Q: Does PatchBurn support CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives? A: No, PatchBurn only supports CDRW and DVD writers. CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives won't need PatchBurn. Since they are read only devices, they should be supported by Mac-OS X right out of the box. So no soap there either. Cheryl -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Blank disks not recognized
So if you don't have a CD or DVD burner then how do you expect to burn blank CDs? And why worry that the system can't find the blanks? Or am I missing something?? If you have an older CD burner try PatchBurn anyway. John It is possible you have a hardware problem but it is quite possible we are both unaware of some other sort of solution. Re: Blank disks not recognized
Recent software update? Maybe the latest update broke something? Can you link the problem to the time you installed an update? Could the drive eye have gotten dirty? Try using a CD cleaner in the drive. Try a different cable. John Ok, so I tried PatchBurn, even thought the QPS (my external Firewire drive brand) website says the drive should be supported by OS X. PatchBurn did not find any writers. See applicable quote from their website below: PatchBurn 3 does not find any writer, although it is connected and switched on. It asks me to save and send the logfile. A: This issue mostly appears with older CD writers connected via USB (like Freecom, HP, Mitsumi, QPS or Sony) or SCSI. In Mac-OS X you will need a special low level driver for the USB or SCSI interface. Contact the support of the drives vendor to get this driver. After installing it, your writer should appear in PatchBurn. Both drives used to work fine -- this is a new issue. Both drives show up in the System Profiler. I can't burn anything if the machine won't recognize blanks! Cheryl -- Pinky, you've left the lens cap on on your mind again - Brain -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Blank disks not recognized
Hi Cheryl You say that the specs of your mac are internal cd/dvd and external q drive cdrw. OK someone tell me if i am wrong but why put a blank cd/dvd in the internal drive anyway. because there is nothing that you can do with it in there, because it is just a dvd not a burner and it would not see the disc correctly anyway. As for the external burner if the burn circle is grayed out then the OS is not seeing the writer. Have you tried reinstalling the software that come with it , because when they say it is supported by OSX and there should be no need, what they really mean is if the burner is seen and works before you install the software then you are lucky and keep it that way. i use toast for burning even though the systems i have have apple internal cdrw/dvd. Blank disks not recognized
Aloha Group! My first post although I've been lurking for quite a while and have learned loads. Tried my local user group, but so far no solution. This is a new problem for me -- I've never seen it before. Whenever I insert a blank disk in my PowerBook (Pismo) or in my external QueFire burner, it is not recognized. Tried three different blanks, and none showed up in Finder or anywhere. But when I inserted the same disk in my iMac G4 (Manapua), it pops right up with a message asking what to do with it. Things I've already tried: checking the CD/DVD System Preferences, Repairing Permissions, restarting, and logging on as another user. CDs with information on them are readily recognized. And when I tried using Disk Utility to make a disk image out of the disk I want to copy, the program makes the requested disk image, but then the Burn icon is grayed out! What is going on here? My system looks like this: PowerBook G3 400 576 MB memory 40 MB internal HD 160 MB external HD Matsushita internal CD/DVD drive QueFire External Cd-RW drive External monitor and keyboard Airport network System 10.3.8 (Imac is still running Jaguar) Thanks, Cheryl P.S. I'm in Digest Mode, so direct reply appreciated. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi Cheryl, I am having exactly the same problem with my G4 Al PB. It is not reading blank disks that my friend's PB is able to read instantly. This only started happening for me recently and I called Applecare. I have not been able to figure out why it suddenly started doing this as it was working perfectly before. I have tried all the things you have - i.e. repair permissions, checking preferences etc and went through all of that again with the Applecare tech before they agreed it was probably a hardware problem. I won't know until I get it in for them to check over but have been sick for the past couple of weeks so haven't been able to get it down there yet. It is possible you have a hardware problem but it is quite possible we are both unaware of some other sort of solution. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
