If it's an older 'book, say running a Classic OS
I've also found that it's necessary to have
AppleTalk turned on, as well as having TCP/IP set
to DHCP. This even if you're using an ethernet network that doesn't
necessarily have other Macs on it.

One thing I've discovered in using my Lombard w/ ethernet cable is that
I occasionally have to push the plug in the back to get a better
connection. Not hard but just enough to make solid connection. There
appears to be just a tiny bit of slop with the jack plugged in. This
seems to makes the difference between getting a connection and not, or
minimally, a poor vs good connection. This is worth checking out as a
possibility anyhow.

 Usually at Best Western. Both
places had free high speed internet connections available. Be advised that
you should carry a ethernet cable with you as not all offered wireless
connections. Each motel that did not offer wireless had a modem and ethernet
cable available in the room for use plus usually one available in the lobby.

On the rare occasions I travel, I take the G3 iBook running 10.3.9, with
AirPort Card, with me.

I have zero problems connecting to Wi-Fi setups.

I have had zero success connecting using the Ethernet cable connection.

I have called the hotels' tech support numbers, but often it's a case of
checking in around 7:00 in the evening, trying to connect using the Ethernet
cable, failing, calling tech support, getting a promise to call back and
they never do call back.

Is there some URL out there where I can find instructions for how to
hook up at hotels/motels using the Ethernet setup?

Many thanks,

In my limited experience, it's a matter of making sure that I have
network settings configured for DHCP.

If that doesn't work, sounds like a good excuse to try an Airport

I'm sure 50 miles is too far to go for wifi too, Clark, but if you're
out their way, Panera's says there's a wifi cafe at Gilroy, CA. :)

FYI, I just picked up a Hawking brand 802.11g wifi router at CompUSA
that'll be free (well, $3 or so for taxes) after rebates. It's going
to be one of the prizes at KFest next year. :)

Re: Free Wireless Internet access on the road report

2005-08-13 Thread Wayne Getchel
I just completed a 5000 mile trip from San Diego to Traverse City Michigan.
The routes taken were from San Diego I15 to I70 to I76 to I80 to I94 to I196
to US131 to Traverse City. From Traverse City US131 to I196 to I 94 to I80
to I57 to I44 to I40 to I15 to San Diego. Every overnite stop we made we
stayed at Best Western or Holiday Inn Express. Usually at Best Western. Both
places had free high speed internet connections available. Be advised that
you should carry a ethernet cable with you as not all offered wireless
connections. Each motel that did not offer wireless had a modem and ethernet
cable available in the room for use plus usually one available in the lobby.
The reason for carrying a ethernet cable with you is that sometimes the
furnished cable is pretty beat up or missing. Be on the safe side!! All the
motels that offered wireless had great connections in the rooms and at the
pool areas as well. Once in Traverse City I used Jwire to locate all the
hotspots in the city. I discovered 6 that were free all conveniently
located in the surrounding area. The on I used most of the time had a popup
page for agreement for their usage. Other than agreeing to their conditions
page before being given access to the net, there was no problems what so
ever. So travelers and seekers of free internet sites. Use Jwire to locate
the free and paid sites in the area in question. While traveling watch the
roadside signs the Motels put up most are now updating their signs to
indicate Highspeed internet access is available and for sure all Best
Western and Holiday Inn have it through out the West and MidWest

Free Wireless Internet access on the road report

2005-08-11 Thread Clark Martin
Last week my family was on vacation in Oregon. We travelled there
(and back) from California via Amtrak's Coast Starlight (late as
usual). While on the train I was able to connect my iBook through my
cell phone (Verizon). Back in the mountains I had no access but
along I-5 in both California and Oregon I was able to connect without
a problem.

The Phoenix Suites hotel we stayed at in Albany, OR offered free
wireless Internet access which was one reason we stayed there.
Connection was just a matter of saying yes to the OS X.3 prompt when
it asked if I wanted to use the hotel's wireless APs. The hotel is 4
stories and had (IIRC) 6 APs, the claimed coverage through the hotel,
I had good connections from rooms on two different floors and the
lobby. The system intercepts your web access puts up a web page
detailing terms of service (basically they don't allow file sharing
services) and virus warnings. After that it works normally. My only
complaint is that it puts that page up every couple of hours. And
after it puts up that page you can't back up and get back to the page
you were trying to get to. They only need to do it once. E-mail and
news programs had no problem at all. My daughter had the same
experience using OS X.2.8 on her Wallstreet. I was a bit surprised
as I thought the Source Forge driver took a little more effort to
find an AP.

From Albany we drove to The Dalles which is about 80 miles east of
Portland along the Columbia River. There we stayed at the Shilo Inn.
It also offered free wireless Internet. Our experience there was the
same including the persistent web page intercept.

The third place we stayed at was an old dingy motel in Medford
(having found no better place in town with a vacancy). No Internet
and my cell phone was on the Extended Network meaning I could make
voice calls but not data. On the way back to Albany we stopped for
gas and I was able to access a free WiFi AP from the service station.
But I was driving so I couldn't read my mail along the way.

It's a small sample but the free Internet access worked fine.

My ISP has dialup access points around California and national dialup
for a $3/mo fee. In the past I have used it but this time I didn't
hoping I could use the hotel wireless access and my cell phone. And
except for one day I was able to.

A few months ago I was at a Motel 6 in Illinois with free wifi and it
was a one clicker type of deal too. My PB G4 picked up the signal as
soon as I booted it and I never had any PIA pages or terms popping up.
That would be annoying but for free (no add-on charges that are not
already added-on) you can't complain too much.
