I've lived with the 12 for over a year, and a number of other 1024X768
laptops before that (not to mention the older 800X600 and even 640X400
models), so I guess I'm used to the amount of real estate I have.
I was seriously thinking about moving up to the 15 this time, but the
small
size and light weight won out again when I saw them side-by-side.

Andrew
Alright, I'm thinking to replace my 17 PB with the new 12 PB and
having a 20 Cinema Monitor for my desk. What is the max resolution on
the monitor when connected to the PB ? The 17 is too unwieldy and
heavy for my limitations in moving on one leg !

TIA for your insights. Andre.

Re: New 12 PB

2005-02-04 Thread Andrew F.
I would imagine the external monitor resolution to be the same as that of
the 17 hooked up to an external monitor, as both have the same 64MB of
video ram.

Can't help other than that as I have never hooked my 12 up to any external
displays.

First off, please trim your e-mails!
second, no there isn't a way to do this, other than attach an external

Despite the warning about it being 'alpha quality' I've NEVER had a

Re: New 12 PB

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew F.
Other than watching movies, I just couldn't think of anything that the 15
would do appreciably better than the 12, while of course it wouldn't travel
as well.

There is also the price difference, with the 15 combo drive version costing
about $300 more than the 12 superdive version.

Finally, I already have a nice Brenthaven case for the 12, not to mention a
second battery that I purchased barely 6-months-ago, neither of which would
work with the 15.

Part of it also was the EXTREMELY positive experience that I had with

So far, I really don't notice much of a performance difference,

There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is very

driver), and the keyboard feels even better, if such a thing is
 possible.
I'm scoring the keyboard as just production variance, but it is

In all, I cannot complain. With my student pricing (they gave it to

Re: New 12 PB

2005-02-02 Thread Matt and Sue Halter
Congrats, I agree the 12 is a great combination of size and power. I
always thought I'd want the 15 until I got to play with them in the
Apple Store. I quickly warmed up to the 12. If I had the money I
would buy one in a heartbeat. If Apple keeps lowering prices...

Well, I went and got my new 12 PB with SuperDrive this afternoon from
the
Apple Store in Pasadena CA. Actually, I called them earlier and was
told
that they only had the 15, so I went to look at it, but the 12
models got
there about an hour before I did.

As I am all finished with school, I thought that perhaps the 15 model
would
be a better fit, as I no longer truck my laptop all over the greater
LA area
day in and day out, but looking at them side by side, the 12 was just
just
so much sexier, and well, I couldn't resist.

Part of it also was the EXTREMELY positive experience that I had with
my
previous 12 G4 (1.0 GHz), and while I'm sure that the 15 is just as
reliable and well made, the 12 really fits the way I use a laptop.

So far, I really don't notice much of a performance difference,
although my
1GHz book already had a fast 5400RPM TravelStar drive like the new one
does.
There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is very
nice, and only took me about a minute to get used to (no more SideTrack
driver), and the keyboard feels even better, if such a thing is
possible.
I'm scoring the keyboard as just production variance, but it is
possible
that somewhere in the last two years that Apple may have switched
suppliers
or just improved on the design, as the keys are both quieter and a
little
crisper in feel, VERY NICE.

Everything else is about the same. I don't have any BT devices so I
can't
test the new BT speed. I'll install Knights of the Old Republic and
Return to Castle Wolfenstein over the weekend and I'm sure the
difference
of 50% faster processor speed and double the VRAM will make a huge
difference.

In all, I cannot complain. With my student pricing (they gave it to
me even
though I graduated at the end of July) I ended up with a 1.5GHz, 80GB
HD,
SuperDrive and AirPort Extreme for the same price I paid for the 1GHz
with a
40GB slow drive and the add-on AirPort Extreme card last year. What a
deal!
