Because that's how far it gets before it freezes..it won't mess up
until it actually accesses the ram.:-) Double check all connections,
and reseat the RAM and CPU. These are the usual causes of such
problems. if it persists, then the the system isn't happy with the Ram.

Well it definitely has all the symptoms of bad RAM; I would hope it's under
warranty and you can get a replacement. If you bought cheap and didn't get
one; I would kindly suggest you get a replacement from someplace like
Crucial.com, may save you $ and time in the long run.

Yes I also have a 128 chip that came with the machine. Funny, I tried the
test cd once and no probs were found. However, I reseat the bad ram, zap the
pram and nv-ram and the computer will recognize the 512 chip ok for a few
hours, then I get a VERY hard freeze, (needing the reset button on the back
of the pismo) I restart, and the 512 magically becomes 256 again.

I have had so many problems with my wonderful machine, that I hope I need a
motherboard replacement. Just think how bad it would be if this Pismo didn't
just sit on a table its whole life!

I don't know if the RAM will fit your friends machine or not but your
description of symptoms would lead me to believe the card is defective. You
could confirm it with your hardware test CD if you have one. Do you have
another card as well in your Pismo or just the one? If you have a second
card you could also try swapping them and see what symptoms you get.

Pismo ram fit in 500mhz iBook?

2003-03-03 Thread Ryan Stewart
Will the ram from my Pismo fit in a friends 500mhz ibook? I think the ram is
"high profile" so that could be a problem. I just need to fit it in for a
minute as I need to test if the ram is faulty. The ram is showing up as 256
on my computer and I get the dialog in os9 boot: "Built in memory test
failed. Contact service technician."

It is a 512mb (PC100? 2-2-2) Chip. I have latest firmware (4.1.8f5) The ram
worked fine for 2 years, until last week when I used my s-video port for the
first time. It has lifetime warrantee, but I don't want to send it in unless
it is really the ram!

Thanks all,
Ryan

Which would make sense, since when the Pismo was updated, only the top slot
was replaced.

gib /jib/: 1. vi. To destroy utterly. Like frag, but much more violent and
final. "There's no trace left. You definitely gibbed that bug". 2. n.
Remnants after total obliteration. Originated first by id software in the
game Quake. It's short for giblets (thus pronounced "jib"), and referred to
the bloody remains of slain opponents. Eventually the word was verbed, and
leaked into general usage afterward.

I'm pretty sure SODIMM0/J2 is the bottom slot. When I added my 512MB
module I put it in the bottom slot and Apple System Profiler shows
SODIMM0/J2 as 512MB. So I'd guess your 64MB modules is in under the

Pismo Ram

2003-01-22 Thread Anthony Vo
Hi Listers,
According to Apple syst. profiler: SoDimm 0/J2 SDRAM 64mb
 SoDimm 1/J2 SDRAM 256mb
Which one is in the upper slot? 64mb module?

I'm trying to replace the 64mb with the 512mb ram module (got from DMS) in my pismo.
I want to make sure it's the 64mb module in the upper position so I don't have to
uplug the processor card to replace the lower one.
Thanks
Anthony

I had my Pismo RAM in all different combinations, including 512 in the
bottom and 512 in bottom, 64 on top. I never found one that didn't
work. Also, make sure the processor card is securely in place,
especially if the 'Book won't start up after you install it. Getting
the card seated just right can be a hassle sometimes...

Re: Pismo RAM recommendations

2002-12-03 Thread Ian Haddock
Interesting to see the same type of problem with OWC. Good sales
service, but if they send you a bad item... they drag their feet
forever, which angers me like nothing else.

I spent 4 months sending and receiving the same 512Mb piece of RAM for
my pismo which had a _documented_ thermal problem (which took $90 of my
money to test by an independent) They claimed each time to have tested
the card and found no problems. Once I requested info on the test
procedures I found out the tests did not contain thermal tests.

The just slapped it on a test board and sent it back. i.e. They never
even read my detailed emails sent with the RAM.

This finally ended when sent a rather angry email to as many email
address as I could find demanding a solution to this ongoing problem.
They finally replaced the RAM and everything has been working perfectly.

So in the end it cost me $100 more than sticker and tons of my time.

I won't be recommending OWC to anyone I know.

I've got full size 512 in my lower slot as well. Adding memory to the
top slot is trivial, the lower slot is a little more compliated, but
not tough.

I'm a big fan of OWC as well. I've only had 1 problem with them in over
20 orders, and that was a glitch in their ordering system that sent the
package to the wrong address. They had it reshipped to me within 3

Tom is absolute correct, I also used just full size chip (512MB) on both
upper and lower slot on my pismo.

Then you likely didn't have it fully seated. There are quite a number
of Pismo users with both memory slots populated, neither DIMM being
low-profile. The backside slot does not require a low profile DIMM in
the Pismo as it does in some of the older iMacs.

The top slot is easy, of course, but the lower is a bit of a hassle
because you have to pull the CPU card, which is connected to the heat
sink, which is connected to the... Anyway it's a bit awkward. Handle
with care so you don't bend the heat sink tube arm.

I've been buying from DMS (http://www.datamem.com/apple.asp) for
years, with excellent results. Last week I had my first bad RAM from
them, and they shipped a replacement overnight, with a prepaid return
for the bad one. Dunno how this would work for an overseas sale, but
in general I'd recommend them.

The lower DIMM [under the processor card] needs to be low profile, the

Re: Pismo RAM recommendations

2002-12-02 Thread Doug Behr
For What it's worth, I have had mixed results with
Other World COmputing.

I have 1 GB in my Pismo that I got from them and have
was happy with the service and the RAM.

After that, I ordered a HD from them and it took over
four months to get a replacement after they initially
sent a dead unit.

A "plus one" and a "minus one" leaving me leaning
toward negative. After my last experience, I vowed
not to buy from them again, and have all taken my
hardware and software biz elsewhere.

I bought some desktop RAM from Crucial about 4 years
ago and was very happy with that
transaction...although I'd guess that their RAM is
more expensive than OWC.

Good Luck.

On service alone, I highly recommend Other World Computing. They give
a lifetime warranty on their memory. I've found them to ship quickly,

Putting the memory in is a bit complicated. But it can be done fairly
quickly.

Pismo Ram & IBM HD

2002-11-13 Thread Joel Furtek
Hey all,
Just wanted to report that I've installed my second 512MB ram card
from OWC and my Pismo is up and running fine with 1GB. Both have
PC133 stickers on them. Shipping was $1.50 more for Express than
ground, so I ordered Friday night, it shipped on Saturday (not
expected) and with the holiday was here on Tuesday.
My GNX 40MB drive is also, knock on wood, operating flawlessly.
I use this machine for daily office work, but also do a daily dose of
iMovie and iPhoto, and it's the master for my iPod, so the ram and
hard drive space are a big benefit.
Apple really got it right on this powerbook! A great package when
new, I can't express the ease of upgrade relative to my (now sold) PB
2400. Same when going from a Powermac 8500 to the G3 Blue & White.
Now I just need to schedule the down time for the G4 upgrade...
:-)
Best,
Joel

Other World Computing (http://www.macsales.com) has a 512MB
module at $108. This is a full-sized module, though. They also have
low-profile memory that "fits both memory slots" (I'm not sure whether
this is a possible problem with the Pismo.)

I ordered a 512MB unit for my iBook last friday, and it was

Yep, memory went up since November 2001. Maybe I'll just sit tight and
not buy anything until the end of the summer. Maybe, just maybe, prices
will be lower.

Boy! Is it me, or has the price of memory went up? $186 for 512 MB? I
thought it used to be barely above $100 not very long ago, or am I wrong?

condemned mainly by anal-retentive weenies. "Dike out that goto or the code

Re: Pismo RAM and help with a decision...

2002-05-29 Thread Thomas Peri

Crucial Technology (www.crucial.com) is pretty good. Right now, you can
get a 512MB module for a Pismo for $186.69 with free shipping. As for
quality, I used to run a lab of 30 G3s at a university, all of which I
upgraded with RAM from Crucial, and we never had any problems with it in
the year that I continued to work there.

I just did a google search for "powerbook memory" and turned up a few
places that have it for much cheaper. Though I've never dealt with
them, Ramjet (www.ramjet.com) is one that sounds familiar to me as a
reputable name, and they've got Pismo 512MB modules for $149 plus $9
shipping.

Now, about the dilemma. I don't know how current this information is,
but everymac says the beige G3 300 is worth $650-$750:

Personally, I think I'd go with the G3 now, and get the pismo RAM later.
But I don't know how urgent your RAM needs are.

Pismo RAM and help with a decision...

2002-05-29 Thread markemmanuel

This post is a mix of off topic and on topic questions.

First, which is the best vendor to buy 512MB of RAM for my Pismo? I 'm
looking for the best price and best product.

I'm kinda torn with a decision, someone is selling a G3 300 Beige
Minitower for $350. I have a stick of memory left from my old Beige G3
so I'll have a quite a bit of RAM to feed it. I'd be nice to put Linux
on there. On the flip side, My Pismo only has 128MB of RAM and I'm
thinking of upgrading it to 640MB. So, I'm torn. Buy the RAM for the
Pismo or buy the G3? Perhaps I can find a low end Intel based computer
to install Linux. I dunno. Input?

Thanks.
