Nice app! Unfortunately, the reasons I use Nisus are such that only Nisus
will fit the bill. I am a bit eclectic in my use of word processors. I use
several, because, for me, there is no one that does it. I even still use WAV
on occasion, because it has a couple of features that no other app
duplicates as simply (lines, for instance), but regularly, I use Word 2001,
Nisus, Claris Works and even Word 5, BBEdit and WriteNow on occasion. :-)

Did anybody look at Mellel? That seems like a pretty good, basic, word
processor.

Not affiliated in any way with it. Just saw it, downloaded it and gave it a
try. I would think that, for most users, that would just do the trick. It
won't replace Word, and I'm sure that a lot of the Nisus followers will
protest that it won't replace Nisus either, but try to give it a try without
any bias... I'm saying this because, over the years, first as an Apple
technical support guy, later as a programmer, I don't think there is any
other type of application that seems to be so personal than a word
processor. People would die for their word processor. Don't know why,
though...

My Pismo 500, runs fine under OSX, I have not installed OS 9 to save disk
space.
The performance and response is so good that I don't see any reason not to
use Sys X, even with my poor memory config (only 160MB).
Now, with the advise of you guys, I have decided not to buy extra 256MB RAM
but 512!!!.

Re: Pismo to X, or not?

2003-01-31 Thread David Pekarsky
Running X.2.3 on a PDQ (commonly referred to as wallstreet) which is
the 300mhz version. Mine has 384mb or ram and runs quite decently. It
is definatley less snappy than 9.1 which I have on the machines as
opposed to a newer version of OS 9 which are plagued by sleep of death
problems. See Charles W. Moore's articles for more information on the
matter. I don't use OS 9 that much anymore save for the occasion time
when I need to use an expansion bay floppy drive which only works in 9.
Overall I would recommend X especially on a pismo even without all the
popular upgrades that seem to be turning it into a cult machine like
the PB 2400 or color classic.

Never dump your Newton, Jon! ;-)

Yes, I still have Classic around for NCU, among others. Until NewtSync is a
clear replacement, I will still continue to use NCU. The other problem I
have with NewtSync is that it requires a specific connection app on the
Newton, which may or maybe not easy to install if you happen to have to wipe
your internal memory. Just my thoughts...

I've been running OSX on my Pismo 400 since the beta. Runs wonderfully. I
use Classic on occasion, though more often when I am traveling because I
haven't quite migrated from Claris Emailer (which runs great in Jaguar's
Classic BTW).
I just upgraded the RAM to 768MB and have a 30GB in 2 partitions: 6BG for
OS 9.2 and OS 9 apps, and the rest for OSX, its apps and all all my
personal docs.

OSX is great Jaguar is heads and shoulders above 10.1.

Re: Pismo to X, or not?

2003-01-30 Thread Mark_PHILIP

Hi Kate.
I'm using a Pismo 400 with 192MB RAM & OSX runs well on it.
It's not as snappy as in 9, but it's acceptable for a system wiht 192MB.
I prefer the snappiness of OS9, but there are some good apps in X as well.
It really depends on what apps you use.
I find myself shuttling between 9 and X, but 320MB of RAM should suffice
for speedy performance in 10.2.

For instance, I use Nisus Writer a lot (9 or classic only), so I find
myself using OS9 a lot more than X. Other than Omnigraffle, I don't have an
intense need to use OS X. But superior memory management and UNIX stability
is very enticing indeed. I will shift over when I get a memory upgrade to
1GIG.

Enjoy!

All I have on my Pismo is OS X v.10.2.3, no OS 9 at all. I just
upgraded the RAM and hard drive to 768MB/40GB 5400rpm but I had been
running a 400MHz/320MB/10GB for about a year and it has been very well,
I can't stand to work in 9 on it so I just took it off. 10.2 is very
snappy for me.

2003-01-30 Thread Kathryn Odell
I've got a pismo 400 with 320 mb of ram. I'm running ox 9.2, and am
satisfied with its performance. However, I'm tempted by some of the os x
applications. I'd like to hear from any Pismo 400 users who have made the
switch. How much does everything slow down? Do you regret moving up?

I've got my free copy of osX here (got the free educator's version) awaiting
advice.

Thanks, Kate
