shipping all machines with 512 minimum soon.
I did find the 9.2 install on the cd's with the iBook. It's on the
repair cd, under install additional software. How odd is that, you'd
never find it unless you looked. Are your cd's like that or are they
complete 9.2 cd's? You may be able to twist my arm if that's the case,
esp if I need to keep the 6500.
That's because the iBook won't boot off of a OS 9 CD, so the regular
installer CD's wouldn't work.

Re: New laptop possibility

2005-03-14 Thread Tim Collier
I've never really used OS 9 since I switched in 2001 back when 10.1 was just
released. My first Mac was a G4 867 tower and it booted into OS 9 but I
wanted to see what OS X was all about to I restarted it and never went back.
All of the software that I've purchased has been for OS X. My desktop is a
20 inch G5 iMacI think I told you and I only use OS X on itnever run
classic and don't have classic installed on either.
When I bought the iBook, I knew that 256 wasn't enough, so I bought an
additional 512it was a bit of a challenge installing it as you need a
'tiny' screwdriver to do ithad to go out and buy one. But once I got
it, it was easy.
Yes, I knew that there was an OS 9 (classic) install on the other disk. My
other OS 9 installation disks are for G4's and say so on the disk. So, I
don't think you could use them to install on anything else.
Since switching from PC, I have become a true Mac Addict!

Take care,

Tim

No it doesn't but it comes on a disk with the machine. I believe it is
on a disk called other software.

Hi Tim! The scary thing is that I was using a borrowed XP laptop on

surf, isn't it. ;)

Hopefully with the ibook I can get rid of the two machines I use for

market anyway!

Right now the book is a bit slower at only 256mb. When will Apple put

I have 2 iPods compliments of my SO. The 5gb 1G when it first came
out, and then xmas 03 for some reason he decided I needed a bigger
one so he got me the 40gb 3G. I hadn't even filled the 5gb yet.
Anyway, I do take them out blading, biking, running etc and even in
the car, depending on where I go, I'm a nervous wreck with them. I
think the Shuffle will put my mind at ease some. If he had bought it
for me without the 'book, I know I'd have the bigger one but honestly

A new iBook should have OS 9 installed. If not it's on your restore
disks. Panther works fine with 9.1 if that's what you've got. Yes,
you should be able to get it off the G4 disks using Pacifist.

My iBook came with a third installer disk that included an OS 9
Classic installer. IIRC neither the disk nor the installer file
identified it as such, it wasn't until the installer was run did it
indicate it would install OS 9. So check your installer disks.

There is no 9.x folder at all, I searched for it. If 9.1 will work,
that is great, I know I have those in my piles o'cds!

I'll have to dig around at my local Microcenter a bit- $617
is less than it would cost to fix my lemon Pismo and upgrade it to
match the iBook's specs. But one has to remember that like all
current Apple portables it's a throwaway computer with a 3 year

Dyna
Chris,
Good deal, until you find a MicroCenter selling a 1.0 gHz, 512m RAM,
30 g HD, Combo drive, 12" iBook brand new in the box for $617. The
outer shipping box was marked 256m RAM, but the Apple box was 512m
RAM. Neither had been opened. The guy who bought it had an $849
refurb on order with Apple at the time. He called to stop the order
and buy the $617 iBook. Apple lowered the price by $40, still not
enough in his case. Food for thought.

Or a bridge that hooks into the ethernet port (such as I have on my
ReplyTV) - but you lose all portability with that!

Won't work. iBooks don't have pc card slots. Airport Extreme is the
only choice, beyond the generally dodgy USB adapters.

(and if that moves you towards a Powerbook, the 12" Powerbooks don't
have 'em either)

I would be replacing my Yikes! and 6500 with it. So power is not
really an issue.

Current ibooks are $999. Our local Apple store has some of the
1.0ghz ibooks for $799.

I *believe* he said the older ones were 256mb/30gb which is the
same as the current ones. Combo drives. I didn't ask about airport,
oh, and iLife. I suppose those two features alone would be worth
the extra $200
An airport Extreme card and iLife are $79 each, so that's less than
the difference. The older one will come with iLife, but possibly the
older version.

But given that this is the Apple store, they may come with the
current version.

I'd say the $799 model is the better deal.
(and, off topic, but the Apple Store is selling iPod mini's for $179
in the clearance section. Damn! Now my new shuffle doesn't look like
such a deal :-( )

I was thinking iWork, not iLife, oh well. I do have an AT&T wireless
card already, I guess I'll wing it when I get there~

Until recently (and I think it's a recurring deal) the Apple Store has
been selling refurb 12" G4/1.2 iBooks, with Airport extreme standard,
for $849, full 1 year warranty. That's a good deal.
