Re: Real computers
If we're sharing stories, :) I'm still a proud owner and user of an Apple //e (8-bit computer for those of you who came into the Apple crowd after the Mac was introduced.) I obtained a Panasonic laser printer that's HPII compatible (and yes it too is still in use.) I had reason to print out boldface italic on the printer, and regardless of how I configured AppleWorks (the real one, not the ClarisWorks renaming - am I showing a slight bias here? :) ), I couldn't get the laserprinter to print out this combo. I thought this was strange since I could do it on my dot-matrix printer. So I called Panasonic's tech support, and got a gent who first couldn't believe that I was using their products with anything Apple. Then he asked which machine. Nope, totally incompatible. Then he asked what program. Nope--simply won't work. I asked him to please contact the instructor for the class I was taking when I was working on a Master's degree and request that the Instructor return that 12-page paper I had turned in the day before, because obviously I could never have printed it out using the setup I was calling about. Stunned silence. He then asked if I could by chance send a hex dump of a text page. Which I could and did. It took my conversation to break him out of his peecee-only mode and realize that the printer didn't care where it got the proper esc-codes and ascii info from, as long as it was in the proper format. And like I said that computer/printer combo still works fine even now. Oh--and the bold italics? Turns out that that combo was the only one the programmers left out of that printer's ROM and that unlike a DM printer, codes aren't additive, so no bold italic in native print mode. Oh well. :) Later.Howard -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I do not recommend Microsoft Anti Spyware since it is a hog of the software world, and it caused problems on my home machine and our work servers. If you are going to donload things download Lavasoft Adaware, and also get rid of any norton or Mcafee virus scan and protection and configure windows firewall correctly an download Avast antivirus, our computer has run like a dream since and we have been running those two programs as our main defense for at least 8 months with no crashes or conflicts, or restarts. I would always recommend a Mac above any pc since right now these are not daily headaches. These men and woman were, for the most part, trained from day one in colleges, tech schools, and universities that were deeply in bed with Microsoft. They had no experience with any OS other than Microsoft because their training included nothing but Microsoft software. From their (very limited) experience software was buggy and operating systems had security holes. My talk about better server software and better operating systems fell on deaf ears because they couldn't conceive of any other state of affairs. So you are right. Win users don't believe us. They can't conceive of anything else. I enjoy doing really mean things like showing them the uptime of my server and notebook. It really boggles their minds to see that I've not rebooted my computer in over a month or that my server has been up for over 180 days. david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I'll spend four hours cleaning some poor slob's PC up from all the spyware they've got and they'll turn around and ask me why I use a Mac...shakes head I know that feeling all too well. My little sister does that all the time, as well as several of my teachers, friends, etc... The only teacher on the network that hasn't had to call IT to fix anything is the Audio-Visual Technology teacher, and he uses a PowerMac G5 and an iMac G5. Plus, they think the PowerMac 5200 is an accurate representation of Macs in general... Caleb -- Fighting the Windoze plague since April 2005... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Real computers
There was an article about a month or so ago where the author, reviewing several different Winders computers wrote 'And we've got work to do, so we can't use a Mac' Never let the truth interfere with a good story. If the truth be known; Just now trying to debug a windows box for a friend. Had heaps of viruses, (380 odd) including one (I think) that made the cursor jump over all the buttons so you could not click on them. Eventually got the viruses out, now still has spyware - and any time you click on a search for 'spyware remover' the browser crashes Now computer has crashed hard, looks like I need to reinstall system. The mouse on this thing has a 'warranty will be voided if broken' sticker over the plate that unscrews on the mouse bottom to let you clean the rollers. So you can't clean the rollers. They expect you to send it in for service - On 07/12/2005, at 3:30 AM, G-Books wrote: THe other thing that could be done with a tech person who says you need to use a real computer -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Surely Windows is better in most situations than DOS, but the comment you quote reminds me of something I ran into years ago working in the commercial Nuclear industry. I had some spreadsheet work to do and the tool available in the office was Lotus 123. After struggling along for hours I told my boss I'd be done in minutes if I could use my Mac (at that time a Mac Plus). The IT folks were worried that I'd create a data island if I used Excel on the Mac. The short of it was that I brought my Mac to work, did the job(s) in short order and saved the spreadsheets as wk1 files (a Lotus 123 format for you young whipper-snappers ;-) ). No, I didn't win any converts that I know of, but using my real computer saved a lot of time and certainly aggravation on my part - and the IT guys learned something new too.
