It's not laziness - it's incompetence.

Back in the day, programmers were Engineers - they actually had 4 or

Except for a few, these days, programming is mostly a job-shop

It's not laziness - it's incompetence.

Back in the day, programmers were Engineers - they actually had 4
or 6 year Computer Science educations from college. They actually
knew how to design or select efficient algorithms.

And back in the day, 99% of them never had to deal with a GUI, or
were even thinking of doing something on the order of Photoshop.
Efficient algorithms are SUCH a tiny part of programming todays
applications that it's not even funny.

Blaming it on incompetence is merely the lazy way out...software is a
LOT more complex today than it was in the day...if you don't think
so, feel free to go back to using an Apple II for your day to day
use, and see how far you get.

Me, I'm glad we have the BFH programs of today...they let me do *my*
job more efficiently, which is vastly more important than letting my
computer do it's job more efficiently. Buying more hardware to do
that is not even a problem. Hardware is cheap and amortizable. Human
capital isn't.

This isn't an excuse for sloppy programming or feature creep, both of
which are huge factors in why Office is now 300MB instead of 300KB,
but there's also the fact that 300MB today costs a fraction of what
300K did then.

They concentrated on efficiency then, because they had to.

ALL engineering is constrained by one simple adage: Fast, Cheap,
Good: choose any two with the Jobs corollary Real Programmers Ship.

Hmm. I worked on the project that put SPSS together. Cards. Stacks of
cards. Hated keying those cards; probably two bad ones for every one
that came out right. Big IBM 360/67 in a building the size of
gymnasium. One day, I loaded a stack in, went into the snack bar, put
in change for a coke, pushed the button and the whole bloody system
crashed. I was almost convinced I'd caused it. When the system was up
again, at least a week later, all our data was interspersed with data
from the Stanford Hospital... Sat through hours of classes in Fortran
IV. The project finally moved on to the University of Chicago; I was
invited to go, too, but then I watched the riots at the Chicago
Democratic Convention and decided that was one of the last places I
wanted to go.

Never touched another computer until I got my hands on my sister's
Mac Classic.

All of that takes several actions and time. I am active on many
lists, and if bottom posting is preferred, it would be simpler if
there were a way to make that the default.

Well, under Options in Outlook Express 5.06 there is a radio button where
you can select whether your reply will be typed in front or after the quoted
text.

This oughta be possilbe in every decent mail program, oughtn't it?

Alas, there's no way to do it, however, you can simply select what
you want to quote, getting rid of all the excess verbiage (as I just
did), then do ONE FREAKIN' MOUSE CLICK to position the cursor in the
right place. That too much? Control-down arrow takes you to the end

If that's too much work, then perhaps you're not thinking hard enough

I read this AM that AOL will start charging mailing list owners for
content sent to their list members- if you aren't whitelisted, it
will not be delivered. Other big mail services (yahoo etc) should
follow.

mailing list is a little vague but it mentions specifically
enabling/disabling HTML links, etc, which content makes up 80% of 90%
of the body in posts on the LEMlists (long footers).

B

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3581301

AOL announced on January 30 that it will phase out its Enhanced
Whitelist service in June in favour of Goodmail CertifiedEmail, which
carries an as yet unspecified per-message fee. Until now, a mailing
list gets on the AOL whitelist by following good e-mail practices,
such as cleaning up dead addresses, making it easy for people to
leave mailing lists, and of course not sending any spam. This is all
going to be thrown out the window and replaced with the payment of
hard currency to Goodmail. People who can afford to pay this fee will
have the privilege of reaching AOL subscribers, others will end up in
junk folders. Yahoo is expected to follow down the same path.

I've been a list nanny since we started having nannies, and on one of the
oldest lists, the quadlist.

The lists are not a democracy. There is no voting. If you don't like
following rules meant for the good of all, unsubscribe. It's not a
dictatorship either.

That said, there have always been people who top-posted. It's a pain.

Courtesy to aid effective communication is the object here. Just as we
DON'T POST IN ALL CAPS we have a number of other conventions to extend
courtesy as we wish it extended to us.

The top posting rules is a lot older than a year. (snip) ing long quotes
to the minimum is another courtesy.

But, Tim has put his finger on it.

If we don't use the rules effectively, people will not read our thoughts.
The delete key is a lot easier than scrolling through a lot of repetative
junk.

I'd suggest a look-see at the list rules

or I'll be glad to send them to you by e-mail.

I too am on cable, as well as being on several other lists.
The point in having simple rules like: deleting all but
the most relevant portions of the message we are replying
to is just common courtesy. So that the reader will not
have to plow through all that unnecessary verbiage. Just
leave enough information so the topic is understood.

My time is important, so the easier we make it for others
to follow the line of though between messages the better.

The reason for requesting the reply follow the repeated
portion of the thread is so the reader will know what the
message relates to. Then they will know if they wish to
read any further. Another reason is so the format of each
reply to a message is consistent therefore making reading
dozens of them easier.

But we can abide and violate once in a while. Perhaps we can call
 this freedom of style

From RFC 1855: http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html#3

If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you summarize
the original at the top of the message, or include just enough text of the
original to give a context. This will make sure readers understand when
they start to read your response. Since NetNews, especially, is
proliferated by distributing the postings from one host to another, it is
possible to see a response to a message before seeing the original. Giving
context helps everyone. But do not include the entire original!

I don't see anyone trying to reinvent the wheel, so much as adhere to
proper standards for email communication which were spelled out years ago.

It's unfortunate that AOL and the advent of free webmail (which almost
always has lazy users top-posting and including /everything/ in the previous
message) have utterly destroyed what was once a far more pleasant means of
communication, but once things start sliding down a greased shit-chute to
hell, there's no stopping it...

Cheers,
A.J.

lists, and if bottom posting is preferred, it would be simpler if
there were a way to make that the default. A few extra steps times
many replies equals an amount of time that adds up as well as extra
repetitive strain...

I haven't used Automator, since each time I've wanted to it didn't
seem to do what I was wanting. Can it do something like hit the down
arrow twice, hit delete, then Cmd-down arrow (to go to the bottom of
the text) and then Return?

For those that are a little nostalgic of these old times, I just found out
an unbelievable fun to use application for OS X. It's called GLTerminal.
GLTerminal emulates a 1970¹s terminal monitor, complete with flaws in
brightness, warped display curvature, and flicker. It even simulates baud
rate lag. And! for extra verisimilitude, the character colors can be green
or amber. It is incredibly well done!

You can download it here:

Oh I am not that nostalgic of those days. They can stay in the past.
But you would think the web would have grown a lot more since then.
But everything is really the same. A lot easier, faster and
different methods to do the same things.

Well, I'll agree there. Add in the fact that we use word processors that take
up tens and hundreds of megabytes of hard disk space, when Word 5 would do
almost everything the new stuff does, in only 2 MB, and with only 1 MB of RAM
usage.

Maybe we should all go back to the old ways of using assembly code to write
software..

The size of programs and the amount of memory and processing power

I could do 90% of what I do now with my Lombard running OS 9.2.2 with 192 MB
of RAM on my 190 running OS 7.5.3 and only 24 MB of RAM. Is it just me, or
did that jump from a 68LC040/33 to a G3/400 not make all that much difference

Lazy programmers and feature creep. Having worked for a software
development firm, I can tell you these are the two biggest reasons we have
such Big Fat Hairy programs out there today.

I'd use the old days of DOS as an example, but that's just too far OT
for me. Someone else mentioned MS Word, though, and that's a perfect example
of bloat: Quite possibly the most seamless and perfect program I've ever
used on any platform was Word 5.1. For Mac or Windows, it was smooth, worked
great, did absolutely everything I could ever want a word processor to do,
and never choked on me.

Then 6.0 came out. It's been a downhill slide ever since.
