But they list clamshell iBooks which had 4MB of Video RAM and up to what,
466MHz processors with a max of what 768MB RAM?

I can’t imagine running OS X on a clamshell, which is limited to 640x480
resolution.

Re: Tiger Release

2005-04-16 Thread harry
I’m eager to try it out, since I’m having a problem with Mail not able
to receive email to my domain address. And I HATE using Web Mail (which
I’m doing now). I’m hoping that Tiger will fix this. If it doesn’t, I’m
going to have to change domain hosts for the second time in a month.

So I’ll be an early adopter. I may install it first on an external
FireWire 800 drive to test it out first, though.

Is anyone using an inexpensive domain host and not having problems
getting domain email in Mail?

Thanks,

Harry

I just ask because it's been my experience that it is best to wait
until after the initial release to see what issues and problems arise,
then buy after those issues and problems have been dealt with. Not
that I don't REALLY want Tiger on my system ASAP.

OSX at 640 x 480 is unusable, but it runs quite happily on a clamshell,
though, at their native resolution of 800x600.

Apple hasn't shipped a system at 640x480 max since the era of the
PB5300 and PB190, iirc.

It's 800x600, not 640x480, but it would suck anyway. 1024x768 is the

I heard that Tiger will NOT install on G3/Pismo's
even tho they have the required: G3+, built-in Firewire.
Apple does not list the Pismo...
The rumor is that it actually henges on what video card
is installed, older ATI vs newer AGP.
Anyone heard anything more?

Re: Tiger Release

2005-04-13 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
But they list clamshell iBooks which had 4MB of Video RAM and up to what,
466MHz processors with a max of what 768MB RAM?

The Pismo came with 8MB Video RAM, up to 500MHz processors and a max of 1GB
RAM. Doesn't make sense...what could be the limiting factor?

The later clamshell iBooks had 8MB VRAM and an ATI Rage Mobility 128 (AGP
2x) graphics card.

The Pismo had 8MB and ATI Rage Mobility 128.

I think it is a mistake on the website as others have pointed out, it will
run on a Pismo.

I am not sure where to draw a line but I think that if your PowerBook
supports Core Image, things can get amazingly faster. I have a 17 at 1.5GHz
and I did notice a significant speed increase in various operations. Most
notably in the Finder (finally!) and Safari 2.0 is also much faster. There
are some pages that display in less than a second! Menus and other widgets
are quite faster.

However, I am not sure to what extent your GPU supporting Core Image can
speed things up...

The Apple site goes into very little detail on which GPUs give full support.
I have a brand-new PowerBook 12 (64MB nVidia 5200) so I'm guessing it is
fully supported, but my friend has an 800MHz iBook G4 and I don't know
whether I should recommend the update for her or not. Also, my 1GHz
Sawtooth has a 32MB GeForce MX pulled out of a QuickSilver, this is an
older, though Quartz Extreme capable card. Will it be supported under Core
Image, and if not, is it still worthwhile from a performance viewpoint to
install Tiger on that machine?
