Clie utilities under OS X
I don't have my Clie UX-50 install CD with me, and sonyclie.org has been down all week (hope the guy/server is safe, dig shows them to be in TX?) and I don't have the software installed on my 10.4 powerbook. Can someone tell me if the Data Import utility will run inder OSX (or classic?) I have the Missing Sync and it will not copy mp3 files to the Clie; and putting mp3 files on the card itself via a card reader, results in mp3 files which are not playable by AudioPlayer on the Clie. I've been using it on my 1.25ghz AlBook. It's worked fine since day one on Tiger (April 29). It worked fine under Panther also. - Dylan --- I have iscroll2 on my 12 iBook, 1 gig under 10.3.9. While only beta, I would like to have the horizontal scrolling as well as the vertical. However when the new Mighty Mouse comes down to the Antipodes, I'll get one if only for the button scrolling though the multi buttons will no doubt find their niche in the scheme of things. I tried SideTrack on my Panther PowerBook. I made the mistake of paying for it right up front rather than trying it out. It made my trackpad ultrasensitive, causing the cursor to suddenly be other than where I had it. It almost seemed like it would respond to a sneeze. I finally uninstalled it when I accidentally sent an email that was not finished. To the credit of the SideTrack people, they did answer my emails very quickly, giving me suggestions on which settings to adjust, but I felt like I got my computer back when I uninstalled it. And while we're at it, what are some of your favorite add-ons and widgets? After 2-1/2 years on OS X (and providing support thereon to numerous clients), the only repair utility I've found useful is DiskWarrior. Norton Utilities were never properly upgraded for OS X, and I've seen too many problem reports with TechTool (I read MacInTouch every day) to trust it. DiskWarrior, on the other hand, once it was properly updated to work with OS X, continues to provide both routine directory maintenance and occasional miraculous cures. Note: DO NOT USE the TechTool Deluxe that comes with AppleCare on any Tiger Mac; it can and probably will trash your HD. TTD has not been updated in years, and has never been of much use anyway; it's criminal that Apple is still bundling it with AppleCare. See http://macintouch.com/support08.html#jul28. I'm a big fan of Macaroni http://atomicbird.com/, which automates Repair Permissions and the three cron routines so the user doesn't have to remember to do them. Out of the box it repairs permissions once a week, and does the daily, weekly and monthly 3 am cron routines whenever the computer is on. You can also configure it to do any other Unix-based maintenance automatically. Until Apple buys Macaroni and includes it in OS X, I buy licenses by the dozen, and install it on every Mac I set up. OnyX (not OnXy) http://www.titanium.free.fr/english.html is an excellent utility for doing all sorts of chores and interface adjustments, similar to Cocktail and others, but free. (I've been having trouble downloading the Tiger version, though; the dmg won't mount.) A similar utility which you can run from the menubar is MainMenu; it's free but I sent a contribution 'cause it's so well done. Some other utilities add-ons I like: AppleJack, RCDefaultApp, PDF Broser Plugin (Tiger Safari can display PDFs, but this plugin -- free for personal use -- still has more features), ClearDock, iSnip, Easy Find, WeatherPop, URLWell, FruitMenu (I didn't switch to OS X until I could have a configurable Apple menu), Little Snitch, Safari Aquafier, and uControl (which I use to allow trackpad scrolling; it doesn't work in 10.4, so I'll have to look into SideTrack, iScroll2 -- which doesn't work with my trackpad -- or perhaps the newly released Free Focused Scroll). I also recently discoverd AcidSearch and Sogudi, which allow me to customize the Safari web search function. All can be found at MacUpdate or Version Tracker. TechTools is a more generic utility while DiskWarrior focuses more on disk recovery. That being said, I've been using OS X since the first public beta in 2001 and I've never used one or the other on 3 different Macintosh, a Blue White, a PowerBook Pismo and a PowerBook 17. My all-time favorite add-ons is LaunchBar, followed by DefaultFolder X, and ASM. TinkerTool is also a good tool if you want to change some system settings that are otherwise difficult to change. For instance, I used TinkerTool to specify the location of the Dock at the start position, not in the middle as it is by default. I put the Dock on the right side of the screen and because of that start position, it is located right below the menu bar and only expend downward. So, my favorite applications that sit on the Dock are always at the same position relative to the screen. The subset chip test and all that stuff- well it's nice but it's never diagnosed a problem for me. the one time I had a machine with bad RAM on the MB, the RAM test didn't find it except by crashing the machine- which was happening anyway. Lots of pretty graphs and stats it generates, though. YMMV. This was early OS9.1 era. I saw the Drive Genius website a couple weeks ago- looks interesting. Do you all recommend one over the other, both, neither? (And while we're at it, what are some of your favorite add-ons and widgets? I did just install Compost, since I like the idea of having more control over trash functions. :) ) I like RadarInMotion. When it opens with your other Widgets, click on it and it almost triples in size. You can set it to Regional Radar, Radar, Satellite, U.S. Visible Satellite, U.S. Water Vapor Satellite. I always use Regional Radar and my Zip code. It displays the lines of storms as they march across your area and you can get a very nice appreciation for how far away the storms (rain/snow) are and how fast they are moving. Stickies Widget is very useful because: I keep forgetting to open my desktop stickies so I don't see the text there. OTOH, each time I invoke Dashboard, there are however many stickies I have nagging me to do something which I would forget to do w/o them. Another one is SysStat which provides info on CPU stats, memory stats, hard drive state, Network interface info, your IP address, system uptime, load average, etc. I've tried several others, but these are the ones I kept and use constantly. bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... On 1/22/04 1:22 PM, gianfranco wrote: My question to the list now is (perhaps I should have changed the subject?): (Changed it for you/us)... I've read many bad accounts about Norton Utilities, is it really that bad? I have used regularly the antivirus and defrag on my powerbook for over a year now and occasionally the doctor and this is really the first time it messes up (it was Utilities 6.0.3 for OS 9) and it messed up a freshely set-up partition with no fancy installs on it (FileSaver started already to report problems even before I could switch it off as I do usually right after a fresh install). I'd like to hear some opinions and what are the possible alternative for disc maintenance and repair? Part of the difference is that DiskWarrior repairs the directory entries and creates a new directory in a new location. Norton works (IIRC) directly on the directory (so if it crashes in mid-corrections, you're out of luck, for example). My problem with Norton was it would repeatedly find problems, and also Filesaver kept giving me conflicts with other extensions under MacOS 9.x. I believe others have reported on this list problems with having 'repaired' a drive, but DiskWarrior still finds problems. Others can chime in who have direct experience (rather than my secondhand) with Disk Doctor and other Norton Utilities programs. Jim Rohde -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Best disk utilities...repair backup
Just this last weekend I was working with one of my sound apps in 9.2.2 on my PB667 hotplate and managed to completely disrupt the HD file system. The result was a non booting HD in OSX or OS9. I initially used the Tech Tool disc that Apple gives away with Applecare but it would freeze in the process of validating the file structure. I then used Disk Warrior and this utility (previously installed) brought back the PB to its original condition. Life is good. The disk was so damaged that I was not allowed to preview the imager before restoring. The question is...Is this the best utility currently on the market? And... Why can't Apple themselves be better about HD disk utilities for their products? I doubt Disk First Aid would have touched this problem. After this near miss I will be replacing the original HD with probably a 60 GByte IBM and creating separate partitions, something long over due. My work requires moving massive audio files around on different computer systems and I believe Retrospect 5.0 works the best for my workgroup. I get a kick out of the extreme ease of the clients working cross-platform on the windows machines of the network. Any thoughts or conformation about backup utilities would be welcome also. Brian C. Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, Disk First Aid. These are the tools of choice. I just bought an iBook (Dual USB) and am in the process of making a list of must-have software. Does anyone have any suggestions, machine specific or not? I use Disk First Aid exclusively. It's in the Utilities folder and is part of the Mac OS. I've found that the other utilities you mention tend to repair just about everything, but if it's something DFA can't fix, it'll usually come back eventually. So, if DFA can't fix it, I just backup, zero my drive, and restore. Problem fixed. :) -- Any statements herein represent my opinion and do not represent those of my employer. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
