When I first tried this on Panther, even the Python apps that come with

crash after a dock bounce or two...I was able to dick around and
finally convince PackageManager to run, and after some more stuff that
hopefully didn't hurt the system, use PackageManager to download all
the Pygame stuff and things that are needed for that, but it still
doesn't help any with Pydance.

-

They don't care. As far as they are concerned you can run what ever you
want on your laptop. The problem lies not in your laptop but in Jaguar,
or even Panther < 10.3.5. Jaguar just doesn't have the drivers for
your new hardware. Apple would have to go out and release a new version
of Jaguar to support your new laptop. Unlike Windows which is designed
to support everything under the sun (which is one of the main reasons
Windows has so many problems) Mac OS is designed to support, more or
less, only the Apple provided hardware available at the OSes time of
release. They could take the time to make a version of Jaguar that will
run on your iBook but that would take time away from updating 10.3 for
new models, and the development of 10.4, and lets face it Jaguar is 2
years old now.

Is there any chance the problem is due to the version of Python installed
(2.2 on Jaguar, 2.3 on Panther)? In which case you might be able to fix
it by downgrading your Python installation.

Because new hardware=updated software. Every time Apple makes a new
computer, they update the current version of the system to work with the
new hardware and ship it with that. If they made it possible to run an
older OS on new machines, they would have to use OLD hardware supported
by the older system, which completely demolishes the point of buying a
new computer. You wouldn't buy a new computer, only to find it uses old
outdated hardware. That's basically why old systems don't work on new
hardware.
