My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

Another cogent question from my initial inquiry to which no one has yet
responded, is whether two identical low-profile chips can be used in a
WallStreet, whose construction allows (or requires???) one

All the best,

Yes, they can both be low-profile, in fact I think that would give you
a little better cooling since another .75 inch of the processor can
breathe. I had two 256MB in my old Wallstreet 233, that RAM now resides
in a Pismo somewhere.

Re: WallStreet RAM upgrade question

2004-02-24 Thread Andrew Kershaw
I believe the reason for one Low Profile is that a larger one won't fit
on the "underside" of the processor card. Not enought clearance between
the DIMM and the logic board.
Ken
It's because a full sized SO-DIMM is too long to fit. The RAM slot
is too close to the edge of the daughter card, and longer RAM cards
won't fit in the small space provided. So-called "low profile" cards
are actually shorter (not thinner), and will fit in the space.

Two low profile cards will work fine. There is no difference
(electronically) between a low profile card and a full sized card.

Peace,
Drew

Another cogent question from my initial inquiry to which no one has yet
responded, is whether two identical low-profile chips can be used in a
WallStreet, whose construction allows (or requires???) one high-profile and
one low-profile chip.

The ram I'm offered is the original pair of identical low-profile 256MB
SODIMM RAM chips which shipped with a G4 Titanium PB whose owner has
upgraded to 1GB. So, although not Apple branded, they are the ones Apple
supplied with the Titanium as original equipment. They have the following
two designations on them:

HYNIX Korea 01 PC133S-333-542
HYM 72V32N636BLT6-H

and

AA-A256MbSYNC 133MHz CL3

I've left a note for the seller, asking if it would be OK for me to try
them, and then returning them if they don't each show up as 256MB (512MB
total) after installation.

Please give me your guidance.

Thanks!

All the best,
stanton

Re: WallStreet RAM upgrade question

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
I was not able to get to 512 ram even with name brand ram in my
Wallstreet. This was probably due (in part) to the Powerlogix upgrade
card I also installed. Some readers have reported having the upgrade
card and the 512 ram, while others had the same problems. As far as I
know, no one really found the answer. I went back to 256 total ram and
the Wallstreet was fine.

Just make sure you can return the ram if for some reason it doesn't
work. Typically, any reputable company allows for return/exchange. Good
luck!

A lot of Wallstreet users have reported using 512MB RAM in their Wallstreet.
You just have to be careful to pick memory specifically for the Wallstreet,
specially if you plan to use OS X which is really picky about memory.

Re: Wallstreet Ram Upgrade

2003-08-14 Thread Wayne
I have seen many posts with upgraded ram for the Wallstreet, well above
Apple's max limit of 192.

I was not able to go above 256 mb in my Wallstreet (128 in each slot,
Kingston Memory) with the Powerlogix 466 processor installed, anything above
this gave the window breaking sound and no start-up.

Using the stock card from Apple (233mhz), I was able go higher to 384 mb.

Is there any trick to this to reach 512 mb and keep the Powerlogix card?

Re: Wallstreet Ram Upgrade

2003-08-14 Thread Wayne
I would have to think that your #1 theory would be more likely, since
according to Powerlogix, the cards were all the same (this could be the
problem if half of the cards were made with the address wiring different).
You actually captured the rom in flash using a small utility from original
card and then flashed it onto the Powerlogix after installing it.

The problem is so prevelant, that Powerlogix is only guaranteeing the Apple
Maximum Ram amount with the cards. It seems to be a 50/50 mix, some
Powerlogix users have never had this problem, while the others did.

The version of rom is worth checking into, thanks.

Okay... This is all theoretical, but in case nobody else bites: Given
that both cards run the bus at the same speed, and assuming that the
boot ROM is on the processor card (which it usually/always is in Apple
products?) there are two possible reasons why "X" combination of
SODIMMs would work with the Apple card but not the Powerlogix card:

1. ROMs on the Powerlogix card don't recognize the SPD info from your
SODIMMs. (SODIMMs have a small serial EEPROM on them, containing
information describing the speed and layout of the RAM).

2. SODIMM sockets don't have the same address wiring on the Powerlogix
vs. Apple card.

If 2 is true, you're SOL.

If 1 is true, AND the boot ROM in this card is flash memory, you might
be able to fix the situation by getting the latest flash update from
Apple and installing it on the Powerlogix card, then adding your
additional RAM.

2003-08-05 Thread Tom Peterson
I must be special. I have a wallstreet with Powerlogic 500 mhz G4 and
have 512 meg ram, 256 top 256 bottom. I did order the wrong sodimm which
registered at half the advertised capacity. I had ordered the ram for
the Pizmo by mistake. The vendor corrected my mistake and the correct
SOdimm is working famously. I think you might want to try some other
sodimms.

If I may add what knowledge I have.

You should run 2-2-2 as it is faster. But if you run both kinds then
the speed defaults to the slower 2-2-3 for both. Replace the 2-2-3 with
a 2-2-2 and you will see the full amount of RAM installed and some
speed increase although it may not be excitingly notable.

the -2 RAM is CAS-2, while the -3 is (surprise!) CAS-3, the CAS latency
is the rating of how quickly each column of memory in the chip can be
accessed (CAS=Column access strobe)

As for why you're having problems, I'm looking into my crystal ball and
seeing you sticking the 2 256MB SO-DIMMs in and recoiling in horror as
ASP only shows 256MB total instead of the 512MB you expected. If this
is the case, it is my experience (with a WallStreet 250) that they
don't like PC133 ram, and that PC100 works perfectly for some strange
reason, despite the fact that PC133 is supposed to be fully compatible
with PC100/66... if this isnt the case, well I don't know then.

2-2-2 is slightly faster than 2-2-3

If the ram is backwards compatible

This means the stick of pc 133 ram that I got for my ibook that turned up a

It does not work in the ibook or the lombard

I will add to that by saying that my TiBook 667 (DVI) is reported to be
running by the system profiler as 666MHz. So either it has been posessed by
the devil, or it's not exact. He he.

they use PC66, PC100, or PC133... each 'faster' ram speed is backwards compatible with
the slower speed machines. FWIW, PC66 and PC100 aren't even manufactured anymore afaik
-- it's all PC133.

there are two factors to consider when determining if a processor/bus speed
combination is 'valid'. the first is the bus speed. the second is the bus multiplier.
if the multiplier is a whole number, then the processor speed must be a whole-number
multiple of the bus speed and the bus multiplier. bus multipliers and dividers can,
however, don't have to be whole numbers. the bus multiplier on a G3 266 would have to
be a hair over 4 -- 4.03 to be exact. on a 300, it's 4.5 (or so).

it's also worth noting that very, very few processors run at exactly their marketed
clock speed. a 233MHz processor is (IIRC) really only running at 232 and change.

Wallstreet ram test?

2002-10-28 Thread Kris Dunn
I found a good deal on a 256mb PC133 sodimm a couple of weeks ago at circuit
city. I didn't expect it to work in my 250mhz Wallstreet, but since it was
local and I could return it if it didn't I thought I would give it a try.
This is my first mac, just recently purchased. I am currently running os X.0
and have 128mb installed in the lower ram slot.

To my surprise it does seem to work!!! It boots fine and the correct amount
of ram shows in the system information screen under the apple menu. All I
have tried at this point is simple browsing. Does anyone have any
suggestions of something that will tax the memory and "ensure" that the ram
is stable and should continue to work?

Thanks

Gerard,
2 things:
First, as someone mentioned, check Apple System Profiler to ensure that
both chips are being recognized. If it shows the 256 on the bottom slot
and nothing in the top slot, that means that the 128 is bad or
unrecognized for some reason.
If ASP recognizes both as 128 chips then the problem is that you have a
high density 256MB chip.
The WS will only recognize low density chips.
I'm not sure about Lombards but Pismos and TiBooks use high density chips.
Using low density memory chips the Wallstreet can definitely go to 512MB,
256 bottom and 256 top.

Have you checked with Apple System Profiler on what speed(s) your two RAM
modules are? I don't know that the Wallstreet works like the Pismo in
that respect, but I found that if the lower RAM is faster, the (slower)
upper RAM won't be recognized by the system (because it's slower,
maybe?). When I put the slower RAM in the lower slot, the system would
"see" both modules and the memory would work okay.

After writing this, I saw Andrew's comments (that the lower slot only
takes 128MB), so that is another factor (hope your 128 isn't slower than
the 256).

128 Mb on the upper slot.
But when I switch the machine on again, Apple system profiler
(either on OS 9 or X) only detects 256 Mb... Until now, I thought that
256+128 would be around 384, a little bit far from 256.
I heard about problems sometimes ago with installing RAM bigger
than 128 Mb on powerbooks, could this be my problem ?
  Thanks in advance.
Gérard.
