When I purchase a new drive I look for those designated "enterprise grade".
They're the ones with 5 year warranties.

Re: What Mac to buy - and from where?

2013-10-07 Thread Dale Hoffman
Bob,
The MacPro 1,1 is stuck at OS 10.6.8.
I'd try for something with more upgrade future.
The new MacPros haven't hit the market place yet and folks might be getting
worried about the new design shift to less internal expandability.
Until then, the older MacPros might be at a premium.

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-17 Thread Dale Hoffman
Bill,

You need to determine if it's the power supply fan or the main ventilation fan.
You can safely interrupt the spinning fan blade of the power supply (rear
perforated panel) with a narrow piece of wood (I use a bamboo "kabob" skewer).
If the noise goes away when the fan stops it's the power supply. You can
replace the integrated PS fan but it's not easy.
Power supply replacement is tedious and pricey.
If the noise continues when the PS fan has been stopped, you can replace the
the main ventilation fan.
Check also to see if you have a high-end video card with an onboard fan as
these can go bad and make noise as well.

Google the phrase "replacing mac quicksilver fan" for numerous related articles
including some from Apple Discussion forums.

Good luck,
Dale

Before you get too far into things like RAM and drive, try replacing the PRAM

You can get a greatly overpriced one at Radio Shack.
Do you have the OS install disk?
You might want to reinstall the System after you get a new battery.

Dual boot between OSX and Ubuntu by installing Ubuntu on a separate

Then when you start the mac, hold the Option key down and you will get

History is old, true, but it's also a great time saver for accessing
websites by just typing the first letters into Safari's address

searching your history collection. Having a deep history collection is
also an interesting way to refresh my memory and review search logic.

I've looked at the Sonnet Tempo HD PCI card (part # THD-MW). A
question: What does "Bootability - Not supported" mean? Not (gulp)
what seems the most obvious, that you couldn't boot up from a drive
connected to it, right? That wouldn't be good. Especially after I was

Sean

I've been booting from these cards with no problem. Just specify
startup disk in Preferences or startup with option key held down. I've
never had problems with these cards - they are completely transparent.
My choice of Sonnet brand has nothing to do with research into
technical matters such as firmware. They were offered by a supplier I
have been using for years - macsales.com (Otherworld Computing) - and
I knew I would be able to return them if I had any problems. I've had
two in operation on two G4s for at least 3 years.

For years I reused enclosures after the original drives died by
swapping out mechanisms. Then I began buying empty enclosures and
putting the drive of my choice in them. I've found Other World

external enclosures. I've bought a dozen or so of these enclosures and
have had no problems.

They require SATA drives, but that's all you can find anymore and
they're cheaper than ATA.
It supports FW400, FW800, USB2 and eSATA. Comes with connecting cords

Other World Computing has been around forever, they give good service

iCal Attachments & Attendees

2010-02-19 Thread Dale Hoffman

I have a question about the location of attachments in iCal Events.
Also another question about managing invitations through the Events
window.

After using Now UptoDate I had gotten used to linking documents to
events. That had advantages when carrying information from event to
event without copying and pasting into the note field. With iCal, the
attachments apparently are embedded in the iCal file somewhere,
because I can delete the original file and still access it from the
Event window. This seems like it will lead to a bloated calendar file
over time. Am I right in that assumption? Is there a more economical
way of dealing with attachments in iCal?

About Attendees - Is it possible to disable the "Send" button on an
event field?
I use the Attendee list to list contacts relating to the event, not to
send an "invitation" to the event.
In fact, I don't really create events, just notes and reminders for
relevant to each day, so I'm leery of broadcasting that information by
mistake to anyone I have listed in the Attendees field. Now UptoDate
let me list contacts without the possibility of triggering some
mailing by mistake. Now UptoDate also provided links in individual
Contact files leading to all of the events in which that contact was
inserted. Very helpful.

If I am correct, he doesn't need anything, iTunes does this function

Thanks all, especially Jim whose confidence inspiring detailed
description.
I worked the "upside down with micro fiber cloth" solution first and
that probably would have sufficed, but opted for the full surgical
treatment just to see what it was like. I cleaned plenty of lint from
the main cavity and some crud from the underside of the cowl which
covers the tiny track ball. I decided not to re-glue the bezel, rather
to secure it with thinly cut strips of tape.

Thanks again,

Mouse Cleaning Advice?

2010-01-28 Thread Dale Hoffman
I've got a "bar of soap" scroll button mouse that is beginning to get
a bit "scratchy".

The ball doesn't rotate as smoothly as it should and cursor action is
beginning to suffer.

I don't see a way to disassemble this thing and attempts to disrupt
any sediment by blowing air down around the orifice hasn't worked.

Has anyone used any of the aerosol electronic contact cleaning
products to clean deep down in this device?

Or maybe suggest another solution?

Front Panel? Our Xerox 7760 has one, but the printer in question here
is an Apple Laserwriter 8500.
There is no front control panel.
As I relayed just a few minutes ago, the solution was to disconnect
the printer from the wall socket.
We've had this printer since 1998 and it has been great. I've had to
replace the fuser numerous times and toner carts are getting hard to
find, but Tabloid, duplex, multi tray printing is a joy.
Not sure if we'll replace it with another B+W tabloid when the time
comes. Consumables on the 7760 are steep.

Thanks all,
Dale

Hi Len,

The job was no longer in the que. The entire file was sent and
received by the printer in a second or two.
I could shut down the computer or disconnect the printer from the
network and the prints would continue to be output.

However, the solution was to shut the printer down, and disconnect the
power plug.

How to stop printing in progress

2009-12-28 Thread Dale Hoffman
I've just pulled the paper tray from our Apple Laserwriter because
someone inadvertently launched a print job of indeterminate length.
I'm getting continuous duplicates of a single page with over 100
printed so far.
The job is in the printer's memory, shutting down the printer does not
clear it - the job resumes when the printer is back up.
I've tried to contact Apple's support line but everyone is calling in
with Christmas gift questions, no doubt.

Thanks for any help.

John,

The first version that came with iLife '04 will work with 600MHz G3 or
better.
You need a DVD to install.
I'm reading this from the Requirements panel of my box copy which is

Contact me offline if interested.

Geoff,

You can always ZIP the file in which case nothing can touch the content.
I'm not sure why your file is being tampered with although I remember
AOL being notorious for resampling graphics attached to emails.
Bruce mentions the drop down selector giving the option of "Actual
Size" for your file.

You might look into one of the file hosting services especially for
files that exceed ISP limits (typically 5-10MB).
I recently upgraded my Stuffit license to see what their file hosting
service "Stuffit Connect" was like. So far it seems OK.

Service Bureau ftp sites are often a maze of assigned passwords,
required pre-registration and time limits. I hate to deal with them.

Re: installing old software

Use Disk Utility on the computer that will mount the low density
floppies and create "disk images" of them.
These can be copied to whichever removable medium that will work on
both computers and transferred to your G4. Drag them to your desk top
and "mount" them in sequence.

Pete,

Look into SnapzProX by Ambrosia:

If you can see it on your screen you can capture it. Sound included.
I missed a premier of Breaking Bad and went to their web and recorded
it.
Burned a DVD and watched it on TV.

If you need to swipe content from a DVD (personal use from a DVD you
own, uh huh), SnapzProX will do that as well.

Good luck,

Re: Seeking Opinions on "Elgato" products

2009-05-11 Thread Dale Hoffman

Hello Richard,

We just started using the Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus connected to an iMac
24 2.8 Ghz Intel core duo with 4GB RAM and various external FW drives
available.
Our primary intention was to use the setup to digitize old VHS
material but we've seen how conveniently it replaces the VHS recording
deck.

The digitizing device - EyeTV 250+ - connects to your cable, antenna,
dish or VCR. Their software - EyeTV3 - gives you a clean and simple
interface for scheduling timed recording. There is also a web
relationship with an online scheduling service called TitanTV (www.
titantv.com) which gives you local progamming listings. I've had
issues with accuracy especially on PBS offerings, but you can manually
schedule based on your local last minute listing schedule. Between
TitanTV and EyeTV3 it is very simple to schedule recording sessions,
when Titan can be depended on, which is most of the time especially
with prime time programming. Once your material has been recorded,
Elgato provides a very basic editing utility with which to perform
approximate surgery such as commercial removal. You can't edit down to
individual frames or combine clips without exporting to something like
iMovie which is time consuming. To burn to DVD, they provide a copy of
Toast which takes over at the push of a button.

Picture quality is good - better than VHS - but you might encounter an
occasional "hiccup" or split second glitch, as we do. Not sure whether
that can be blamed on the EyeTV device, or DVD burning, but it's not
something I've encountered with straight VHS recording. The EyeTV 250
gives you dedicated digitizing, leaving your computer's power alone.

I'm not sure what the possibility is for viewing these recordings
directly on a networked home entertainment HD LCD, or how Apple's
Apple TV device might be made part of the configuration (note that
Apple does offer the Elgato EyeTV 250, possibly suggesting a
synergistic relationship). That would be something worth looking into,
but we don't have a very sophisticated "home entertainment" center.

Check out Apples web spot for the Elgato which includes some useful
reviews:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR373LL/A?mco=NDkxMTQ0NQ

OWC was our point of purchase, which saved us a bit.

Best wishes,
Dale

Try one of the Elgato EyeTV devices (I recommend the eyetve plus).

Also allows connecting your vhs tape deck for digitizing old tapes.

Re: Dock Underwater

2009-02-25 Thread Dale Hoffman

Hello,

They couldn't select any of the files to drag them to the desktop.

I experimented on a computer by deleting the " User / Library /
Preferences / com.apple.dock.plist" file and restarting.
That worked for me in restoring the Dock to is unmodified condition.
I've passed the recommendation along.

Thanks all.
Dale

Now the dock barely appears above the lower edge of the screen. We've
tried playing with the options available in the System Preferences

We used to use "PC Maclan" from Miramar but it has been discontinued.
They recommend something called Network Magic Pro.

Thanks DC.
Doug, follow the link and there is a compatibility chart which
includes the 9800 Pro.
Looks like a match.

Replacement Fan for ATI 9800 Video Card

2009-01-01 Thread Dale Hoffman

I have a Quicksilver G4 with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac AGP 256MB
video Card.
I use it to drive an Apple 23" LCD monitor and don't want to give it up.

The fan has been acting up emitting intermittent whirring noises.
I removed it, blew it off with compressed air which worked for a while.
Then I added a drop of silicone electrical contact cleaner to a whole
in the back which - I suppose - feeds the point of rotation. This is
working, but I would rather find a replacement fan if I can. Tried
Googling on the only ID info printed on the fan which is "ATI 603AC"
but couldn't get a match.

Anyone know where I can find a replacement fan for this card?

Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Help Identify this Video Card

2008-12-06 Thread Dale Hoffman

I pulled this video card some time ago and forgot to make notes.
It would probably have come from a G4 but I was hoping for a bit more

All I can read on the board is "nVidia Model P66"

Any specs and clues as to which models contained it would be
appreciated.

Where do I find the data associated with Address Book in OSX 10.5.4?

I want to transfer from one setup to another and can't find anything
in Libraries that identifies itself.
Also, why is the Address Book application so huge (50+ MB)?

Thanks,
