Re: Basic Video card question....
I used macs for more than a year now, but i wouldn't consider myself new to them. It's just that I never messed around with the video cards. Btw, if you want to ask me about the pc to mac transition, it was great. macs are better like always. If an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX440 PC video card would supposedly work in my PM G4 Graphite, show me which pins are pins 3 11. I am prepared to flash that video card and run it in my PM because i'm pretty fed up with the ATI RAGE 128PRO's performance. Also, the PRO in the name of it shouldn't be there. It would be more of a pro if it had more like 128MB of VRAM. I perfectly know that Video cards from back then didn't have such amounts if VRAM, but i came across an Nvidia GeForce 5700 with 128MB of VRAM and it says the MFG date is 7/11/2001. Since my PM was made then, why can't they include a top-of-the-line video card option with it? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I would use a video card that has 256MB of VRAM. Most of my computers have that as a minimum, even though i almost never use graphics intensive programs, but just in case i have it there, it will be there. I reccommend an Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT with 256MB of VRAM. It can also have an extra 128MB of shared VRAM, getting up to 384MB of VRAM. I have an ATI RAGE 128PRO in my PM G4, and no matter what video card i buy, it's incompatible!!! GRRR. Anyways, i am looking for a video card to replace my current one. It lags so very badly under Leopard =(. Basic Video card question....
Sorry if this questions seems to naive/basic, but my experience with AGP cards is limited. I bought a flashed nVidia GeForce FX5200 128Mb to replace the 64Mb of a late 2004 PowerMac G5 dual 2GHz. The FX5200 is shorter than the original ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, so the hook of the GeForce card where the AGP slot latch catches has to be introduced inside the slot. Will the slot be damaged if I put the card hook into it? Or can I simply put the card all the way in the slot whitout problem? Have been googling around but cannot find a definitve answer. Thanks a lot! Gorka from Spain -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Basic Video card question....
If it is longer, be careful and try not to damage anything inside. Put it in carefully, and you'll be good to go. It will fit in, but i don't know about the hook. The hook may be some obstrustion to the system. I have expirience with an Nvidia GeForce 6200 GT with 256MB VRAM, it is very long, and it does have a hook, but basically i looked where i was plugging it in, and everything was good to go. As long a it can fit into the socket, you're ok. BTW, the Nvidia GeForce FX5200 is kinda slower, so i would reccoemnd buying one from me. I have once Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT AGP 8x 256MB VRAM. yes it is the longer one, but it has no hook, and it requirees plugging in a power plug like the ones on a HDD on a 3.5 internal drive, or a DVD/CD drive. It's pretty fast, and useful. I don't need it at all because It won't fit into my PM G4 Graphite. inteas i have ste same card that's compatible in there only it's a 6200GT not a 6800GT. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Basic Video card question....
The FX 5200 is shorter that the original card, so the hook used to secure it to the AGP slot latch is lined with the slot and has to get inside if I want the card to fit. It`s the same lenght as the Rage 128 fitted originally to early G4 PowerMacs (I had one to compare), so it would perfectly full the Gigabit Ethernet AGP slot. The AGP slot in the G5 is far longer (64bit vs 32bit slot), so the hook with catches the G4 AGP slot latch would have to get into the longer AGP slot of the G5, in an area which has its own connectors, which MAY be damaged in the process. I was worried this could damage the slot, so in doubt I did nothing and put back the original video card. I was told by the seller the card was used in another G5, so I guess it should fit, but not being 100% sure I wanted to ask first.
