Re: G3 Lime iMac and 10.4 instal CD

If the firmware hasn't been updated that may prevent installation.
Tiger will require some level of update that may or may not be on the
imac now.
Here's the latest: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130#English
If it needs to be updated then you have to boot from OS 9 to do it.

Yes, since it has Firewire it's an SE version, and the optical drive
is certainly at least a DVD ROM drive, so that means your Tiger
Installer DVD should work as is for this iMac.

G3 Lime iMac and 10.4 instal CD

2010-06-15 Thread janesprando
I need to install 10.4 on a G3 Lime iMac. However, I have a few problems to
overcome.

1. I live in Portland, OR, and the iMac is in Las Vegas, where I will be
visiting.
2. The iMac does not have a DVD drive. The Tiger install disc (disk) that I
own is DVD.
3. I do NOT have access to an external CD drive to take with me.
4. I can't seem to find a Tiger install CD.

Does anyone out there have a Tiger install CD? Can anyone make one for me?

You have Tiger installed on a machine currently? If so, use CCC to
make a backup of that to an external. Take the external to the iMac,
and use CCC to slap it on the HD.

If you're intention is to upgrade an existing system then if using
the CCC method remember that Migration Assistant I think will be
needed to make it kinda easy otherwise a 10.4 upgrade install is the
safest and fastest, IMHO

But if this is a simple total system transfer then CCC rules here.

Another possibility is what I did on my G3. If you have access tp a

Then hook it up to Your G3 via USB.

There are two Lime iMacs, one without Firewire and one with Firewire
(the SE (Special Edition) model). You're correct that this Lime iMac
is likely without Firewire because it lacks a DVD drive, and all SE
versions came with a DVD drive. While Apple doesn't support booting
from a USB 1 port on a colored iMac or iBook, it DOES boot from USB 1.
You use the Option key at boot to select the USB device and it boots
fine, but slowly since it's USB 1.

Installing Tiger isn't supported on G3s either. Sometimes you need to do

Look in the archives and check my postings. You will see that I explained
that all PowerPC macs with USB can boot from USB. (except for beige systems
and powerbooks before the G3 era.) I have successfully installed Mac OS X
tiger on a blue (not indigo) iMac G3 @350Mhz with 512MB of RAM through my
external DVD drive. Not only that, it has no firewire. I used XpostFacto. At
first i really did think that PowerPC macs could not boot from USB drives,
as i first attempted this on my Summer 2001 Graphite (yes, with firewire)
iMac G3. I thought maybe it didn't work because of a OF error or block, but
I then realized all that time i did not start up pressing and holding the
Option button.

This is a good point. If this Lime iMac doesn't have Firewire, the CD
installer set won't really help because it will have the block against
installing onto non-Firewire Macs, and won't run without minor
modification. This is another reason to either clone the installer DVD
onto a USB stick and then add the modified OSInstall.dist file so that
it can install onto any non-Firewire Mac; OR use a clone of a
previously installed System.

You have Tiger installed on a machine currently?  If so, use CCC to
make a backup of that to an external.  Take the external to the iMac,
and use CCC to slap it on the HD.

Dan (and John), I have a back up of my G4 iMac running 10.4.11 using
SuperDuper on a LaCie Firewire external drive.
It is not exactly light weight! But the Firewire won't work, either.
I still think the easiest solution is to find a 10.4 install CD.
I don't need to have iTunes, iPhoto, Garage Band or any of those CD-
hogging Apps.

Does anyone out there have a Tiger install CD? Can anyone make one
for me?

Make an image of you DVD and use Disk Utiliy to restore the image on
a USB stick it will boot the G3 and install from it.

JOHN CARMONNE

Will the iMac boot up from the USB stick/flash drive? I thought G3's
could not boot up from a USB drive. After making the Disk Image, would
I just drag it on to a flash drive or does it have to be installed on
it?

No after the image is made use the disk Utility Restore feature to
get it on the stick. And be sure to test it before heading to Las
Vegas. That's how I do it.

Also, 10.3 is currently on the iMac.. It's been a while since I have
done an upgrade. So would Archive and Install till be an option?

Jane
Yes it will boot from the USB stick and Yes install and archive if
you have the drive space. The stick will be slow so don't get antsy
give it time it works pefectly.

Kris --- and everyone else who has responded (thank you!) --- I just
got the specs for the iMac:

Lime Green iMac
Model: PowerMac 2.1
CPU Type: Power PC 750 (83.0)
Processor: 400 MHz PowerPC G3
Memory: 512 MB SDRAM
Hard Drive: 10 gig
Ports: 2 USB
Firewire 400
Ethernet

So it DOES have Firewire and a Tiger CD copy would work.

the lime iMac G3, put it in another iMac G3 (or how about I install tiger

Mark, I assume that you are talking about my original post.Tiger is
NOT on this iMac.
It is now running 10.3. I want to install Tiger. I can't pull out HD
and put in another one
because I don't have the time, money or access to another G3 hard
drive. I will be only be
there for a few days.

That would be great if you could install Tiger for me, but how would
that be possible?

A Tiger CD is kinda hard to find, I'd use the image on a stick or
another way is a USB DVD drive, You boot the DVD from Startup Disk
in OS 9,
Trust me the stick is the easiest and cheapest way to go, I'm
starring at a G3 iMac right now booted from a stick with Tiger 10.4
install DVD image

on it.

Yes, since it has Firewire it's an SE version, and the optical drive
is certainly at least a DVD ROM drive, so that means your Tiger
Installer DVD should work as is for this iMac.
