I hate Epson printers. They use a technology that keeps the same print
heads for the life of the printer and use a nipple injection system that
frequently gums up and requires maintenance using more of your ink.

HP on the other hand, when you replace the cartridge you replace the ink (it
is self contained so no messy spills of clogged nozzles) and the print head
all at the same time.

Brother lasers, HL-5250DN (30 ppm, duplexing) and MFC-8460N (30 ppm,
non-duplexing, scan/copy/print), both of which I purchased as so-
called "factory refurbs", but were actually brand-new in every
respect, but were sold as refurbs, apparently to conflict with
retailers.

The two named, above, share the same consumables, and ... so far ...
have been supported by every version of MacOS I have installed ...
certainly from 10.3 through 10.5.6.

Search for the model number and "refurbished" to find a seller.

My HL-5250DN was purchased from Amazon.com. My MFC-8460N was purchase
from JustTheFAX.com. Both offered same day shipping which was "free".

Wound up paying no more than one-half price for each.

Both are based upon the same marking engine, and both have PSL3
emulation, network printing, and expandable RAM to at least 544 MB.

The cheap ones don't have expandable RAM, and don't have network
printing, nor PSL3 emulation.

I'm a big fan of Canon printers. I've had my MP600 all-in-one for
about a year and a half, maybe two years now, and it's been great. The
print quality is excellent, and I've never had to deal with a "clogged
nozzle" like I always had to back when I had my Epson. Also, the Epson
was like the "Hummer of Printers"—it went through ink crazy fast. The
Canon is more like the "Prius of Printers." It gets more work than the
Epson ever did, and the ink cartridges last longer.

Another major benefit of the Canon—and I believe that HP does this too—
is that you can still print when one color is low or even entirely
out. I remember that you couldn't do that on the Epson. And, the ink
cartridges supplied by Canon are transparent, so you know that when
your printer tells you it's out of ink, it's actually telling the
truth. (Epson got sued awhile ago because printers reported there was
no ink and refused to print even though there was ink still in the
cartridges.)

I hope that helps you make your decision.

Epson is really good at supporting open source, so their printers will work
out of the box with Linux. Right now I have a Canon that is connected by
ethernet to my router so that my whole family can print to it. Very cool,
but no dice with printing when I am using Linux.
Canon has cool features, but I miss the slightly more basic Epson printers I
have had, unfortunately, they don't seem to be available in my area and the
shops that sell Apple hardware are really pushing Canon printers hard.

Good hunting,

G'day Cheryl

I happen to like Epson printers, but not the cheap entry level ones.
I've got a Stylus Photo R390 (4 years old) which uses a 6 cartridge
Claria ink system, good for 100 year ink lifetime, and have never had
a blockage.

It's mainly used for printing photos, (for home, and my wifes
scrapbooking) and I believe that Epson make the best photo printers on
the planet; the quality when compared to a friends Canon was quite
noticable.

However, Epson printers are a bit expensive to run as you need to use
Epson ink (never use recharged ink) and Epson paper (except for
general printing), and if photos are not your priority, I'd look
elsewhere. My friends cheap Canon was replaced 3 times under warranty,
and he ended up getting a HP. I believe that the photo quality of the
HP is also not as good as the Epson.

Regards

Santa

Canon Pixma iP4500 rocks! It has duplex printing, although it does work better
when the paper is coming from the rear paper slot instead of the cassette. I
had an Epson C84 and a HP, and the Epson sucked.

I just upgraded from a 1560 Cannon printer to a refurbished MP530 when
the old printer needed a new print head ($42.00 + shipping) for $47.00
+ Shipping and a CLI... a great deal to say the least and it's
performance is simply great!

By the way, Cannon has had a long, close and fruitful relation ship
with Apple dating back to the very beginning... good enough reason to
stick with them... besides their ink and paper supplies are reasonable.

Wasn't the last Canon printer which it made for Apple the Color
LaserWriter?

Because of Canon's higher transfer prices, Apple went away from Canon
as soon as it made sense.

Then, when everyone and his uncle were shipping lasers for under
$200, Apple got out of the printer business altogether.

We have run all the invoices for our biz for many years with what to me is
the work horse of printers - the Epson Stylus 740. I think we paid $40 for
it about 9 years ago. I have 10 generic cartridges I fill at a time with
generic ink. I have run well over a litre of black ink through those little
cartridges, and it still prints like the day it was born. About 4 cases of
paper have gone through it. We recycle used paper (print on backsides) when
possible, which means sometimes a turned corner will cause a terriffic
crunching jam, but it just pulls out of it and keeps on chugging.
If someone offerered me $40 for it today I'd say no thanks.

Parts for all Canon lasers are widely available.

The mechanical design is so good most can achieve 1,000,000
impressions (less for personal lasers, of course).

I still have LaserWriters made in 1984 which are still operational.

The Canon toner cassette system is foolproof, and refills are widely
available.

Brother is second in my book on the score of consumables, mainly
because the OPC drum is a separate component.

But, a positive for Brother is its extended range cassettes.

Both of my production lasers are Brothers which use the 550/580 toner
cassette, refurbs of which are widely available for as little as $19.99.

My LaserWriters remain available for the few times when I need
absolute PostScript compatibility.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-22 Thread Tom

My Epson Stylus Photo R1800 makes beautiful prints from digital photos
or scans. Occasionally a print head will clog and need cleaning, and
that wastes ink, but the prints are so good that I put up with it.
There are six separate ink cartridges so you can use each one up
completely, unlike my R1280 that had to have its entire cartridge
containing all the colors thrown away when just one color ran out. I
learned that when the printer starts warning you that a color is low
(a red light blinks), don't replace it--it still has a lot of life
left. I suppose Epson is hoping you'll replace a cartridge when it's
merely low. When a cartridge is empty, the red light is steady, and
the printer stops.

Another plus: the combination of these archival Epson inks and matte
heavyweight paper is said by Epson to be able to last 200 years if you
keep it out of constant sunlight. I've had color prints hanging on a
wall in a stairwell that do get afternoon sun, and in three years I've
seen no fading in them.

I sell these prints on eBay, (see ) and
plenty of people have bought them. Take a look at my eBay feedback to
see how much people like these prints. They really are beautiful.

So, if your main use is to print photos or scans, my vote is for the
Epson R1800.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-22 Thread t...@io.com

I just bought a Kyocera EcoPro EP C170N color laser printer for $200
with free shipping. However, that deal has gone away and with
shipping it is about $250 now.

I was concerned about the print quality because there was no way for
me to see it before buying, but it looks great to me. On the other
hand, I'm not a graphics expert, so there could be flaws that my
amateur eye does not pick out.

Still, I printed a close-up photo of our cat (among other things) when
she was young and you can see the individual hairs and the reflections
in her eyes and it looks good to me. Of course the 32lb glossy
Hammermill paper probably helps but it was less than $10 for 300
sheets at Office Mumble.

A good laser printer is always going to cost much much less in
consumables than an inkjet printer, and you never have to worry about
ink drying out and clogging, especially if a month or so goes by with
no printing. And the ink doesn't run if you get your print-out wet.

One thing to keep in mind is that those long feature lists in printer
specification are often specific to some Windows utility of driver, so
it takes an investigation to figure out what's actually going to
function under Mac OS. Much of the functionality of the C170N is
accessible through a built-in web server.

The C170N has ethernet built in (another plus compared to most ink
jets) and in addition to the common TCP/IP support, this printer
actually still has AppleTalk support (Appletalk over Ethernet, not
LocalTalk media) so it is usable with older OS Macs through the
LaserWriter extension.

The AppleTalk support is what sold me compared to the Xerox 6180 ($250
w/ free shipping) and the Brother mumble or other. Although, if
you want color duplexing, Newegg had the Brother color laser model
with ethernet and duplexer for $300 with free shipping.

I think all these deals are over now, but that doesn't mean they won't
be back. The deal I got cycled around a couple of times before I
bought it.

The Xerox 6180 was at Staples. I read a couple of reviews in which
folks were not happy about the amount of consumables the Xerox uses,
but it certainly is feature rich. On the other hand, those people may
have had unrealistic expectations. It's hard to judge the sanity of
reviewers.

The printer I bought was also available on amazon.com for $200 with
free shipping, because buy.com apparently has a store set up on
amazon.com. So I went that route, since my CC pays better bonus
points at Amazon than it does at buy.com. They also had a 512 MB
memory module for $28 which maxed out the RAM in the printer.

So for about $230 I got a color laser printer with ethernet built in,
640 MB of RAM, and it works well with both the OSX and OS9.x machines
in the house. My goal is to use it to print water-slide decals for my
rebuilds of classic model rockets. (Decal paper for printers. A
month ago I had no idea the stuff even existed.)

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread Paul

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned HP yet. Maybe it's because their
recent consumer models are a far cry from their venerable Laserjets.

I print a lot of text, and use a Kodak kiosk at a supermarket for
occasional photos, so I got a used HP laser printer (no color), the
Laserjet 2200d. (The "d" means duplexing. The 2200 prints one side
only.) I use it with a PC, but there are postscript drivers for it for
OS X, OS 9, and probably earlier. It probably was an office machine
made for use by a small workgroup. It's not hard for one reasonably
strong person to carry, easier than a 17" CRT monitor.

The older HP's are very durable and inexpensive as used models (people
often give away ones in very good condition around here), and the
toner cartridges tend to hold more toner than the later consumer
models. That makes them cost a lot less per page. Someone gave me a
Laserjet 5mp, which has postscript, a parallel port, and an older
round Apple Talk port, but no USB.

HP isn't particularly known for its color laser printers, but their
better monochrome Laserjets have an excellent reputation and last
forever. Their recent consumer stuff isn't known for durability or low
cost per page.

Most of the Laserjets with a good reputation use a Canon printing
engine. For instance, the Canon LBP-32X engine is in all of these
printers:

Canon LBP-1000
Canon LBP-32X
Canon P 100
HP LaserJet 2100
HP LaserJet 2100m
HP LaserJet 2100se
HP LaserJet 2100tn
HP LaserJet 2100xi
HP LaserJet 2200d
HP LaserJet 2200dn
HP LaserJet 2200dt
HP LaserJet 2200dtn
HP LaserJet 2210

Canon's generic products (those which have all the capabilities of a
"marking engine", but no interface besides its proprietary "video
interface") are all called LBPs ... Laser Beam Printers.

The early LaserWriters were quite simply an LBP with an Apple-
designed PostScript RIP (Raster Image Processor), with the PostScript
interpreter from Adobe Systems. (Adobe designed numerous RIPs ...
Atlas, Redstone, etcetera, all generally named for missiles ... but
Apple's RIP was its own design, and was considerably simpler that of
Adobe's, or anyone else's ... more reliable, too). The basic LBP had
its top removed and replaced by an Apple-molded top (the piece with
the Apple logo). The Apple RIP was fitted into holes already present
in the LBP, and the RIP was cabled to the LBP's video interface, and
also to the RS-422/RS-232 connector box, which replaced Canon's video
connector box).

LaserWriter and LaserWriter Plus = LBP-CX = CX Marking Engine (Also
LaserJet and LaserJet Plus)

LaserWriter II = LBP-SX = SX Marking Engine (Also LaserJet II and III)

LaserWriter Pro 630 and LaserWriter 16/600 = LBP-EX = EX Marking
Engine (Also LaserJet 4)

Canon LBPs of most types are one of the few printer families for
which replacement and repair parts are widely available.

Countless LaserWriters and LaserJets are discarded each year because
of a failed (paper) pickup roller, which are widely available for
about $6, yet take several hours to install.

Fuser rollers are available, too, for about $10, but the replacement
procedure is quite difficult. Complete fuser assemblies are often
available at reasonable cost, about $50 for the most popular models,
on an exchange basis.

Apple has never offered its LaserWriter repair manuals for sale.
However, HP has, and although these initially cost about $25, these
now cost several times that amount.

Doubtless, one can probably find a scan of a repair manual on-line.

There's one point I'd like to bring up in here.

If you print EVERY DAY, these things are major workhorses, and go
forever. If you don't they're clogging nightmares, particularly in dry
climates (either for real like here in the desert SW, or artifical in
a heated space in winter)

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread cheryl

Wow, I didn't think I'd get so many responses! Thanks so much.

I've only had an Epson Stylus years ago and then this HP for the last
5 years or so. Both were inkjet not laser, so I don't know anything
about laser printers.

I'm not going to be doing a lot of printing. One thing I liked about
my old Epson was that you could do a lesser-quality print like a draft
which used less ink if you just needed a reference photo or to print
out a list. Or were printing out a walkthrough for an adventure game.
LOL! I do photos occasionally, and one thing I really want to be able
to do again is print my own business cards. I know it's expensive to
do it yourself, but I print them up maybe 40 or 50 at a time and I
don't need 1000 of them. The HP is a tray feed so I couldn't make them
myself because the perforations would break when it went through the
rollers and I'd end up with it all screwed up.

There are times when my printer will sit for months unused, and then
I'll use it several times. So a printer that clogs easily is probably
not a good thing. I also can't spend more than about $100. Boy I'm
asking a lot, huh?

Now that I think of it I need decent photo printing because I do image
transfers that I put on polymer clay as part of my artwork. For what I
do it doesn't have to be top quality but it at least has to be
decent.

I will say I've never had a clog with my Epson Stylus R200 and I do

I was always a big HP fan till I was way behind technology with a
non-USB machine and HP dropped the old serial port. I then switched

Since you mentioned "print my own business cards," I have been using a
Canon Pixma MP500 multi-function inkjet to print personal cards, with
layout templates from Apple Pages, and on to Avery 8376 "Matte Ivory"
blank cards. The printer works so well for this that others have
complimented me about the cards, and several friends have asked me to
make cards for them. The Canon MP500 is a few years old, but there
are other newer models in the same series.

In my experience, Canon has provided excellent support for all
versions of Mac OS X so far, including Leopard.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread Paxton

I have been using Goodwill printers at about $10 each, specializing in
HP Photosmart 7350s and 7550s. I use these because I standardized on
the 56, 57 and 58 ink carts. They seem to work well however the door
to change the ink carts is a little flaky so I check those out before
I buy one.

I have refilled these 5X carts with a Costco refill kit but abandoned
it. The color was acceptable but noticeably worse than using HP carts.

I have had good luck printing with them both photos and text, on Mac
(10.3.9) , PC (XP & 98) and Linux (Ubuntu). I also travel for several
months at a time and have always had good luck in coming back and
using the printer after it has not been used for two or three months.

I also have a Lexmark E234n Network laser printer that I also got at
Goodwill for $10. Had to change the feed roller (actually just turned
them over.) Works really well as a B&W network printer. Very quick.
Works well with the Macs. It replaced a networked Laserjet 5 that also
worked with the Macs (OS9.2).

My next printer I am looking for is a Epson 2400 printer with pigment
inks for studio quality Photo reproduction. Hoping to find one in
Goodwill.

At the school where I worked we had about 30 Epson 940N (IIRC) printers.
Every summer the printers sat idle. Every fall it was a major
undertaking to clear out the inkjets. It usually consisted of printing
pages with large blocks of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It usually
used up the better part of an ink cartridge. Then it would happen
through the year on certain printers that didn't get used often.

We later switched to HP inkjet printers. I don't think we had very many
of those printers have problems with the ink drying up over the summer
or through the year.

Another issue we ran into was the Epsons loaded paper from the top rear
and the output was in front of that also on the top. You wouldn't
believe the stuff we found inside. This was another reason for choosing
the HPs, the paper in and out was in the front and the top was
completely covered.

Folks get passionate about Epson, but if your priority is for the best
photo quality at home user prices, get an Epson which features their
Claria Hi-Definition ink. We have a Stylus Photo RX595, a 2007 all-in-
one model, which works great with no clogging problems. For years we
used the Epson 740 with great photo quality.

For best text quality, avoid Epson. We have a Canon Pixma iP4500
which does very nicely, also a 2007 model. Some HPs also get very
good ratings for text.

I've never seen any reports praising Brother ink jets for quality of
output.

I believe most LaserWriter ENGINES were made by Canon. I don't know if
Apple built the cases and other parts or Canon built the whole thing.
HP ALSO used Canon engines a lot.

The RIP ... the "brains" in LaserWriters ... is an Apple design,
using a PostScript interpreter licensed from Adobe, with fonts
licensed from Linotype/Hell.

The later LaserWriters appeared to be completely assembled by Canon,
with the exception of the RIP board, which was supplied assembled and
tested by Apple.

The early LaserWriters had the ABS plastic top made by Apple and
applied, with the RIP board and its card cage, by Apple after
importing it.

So, mostly made by Canon, and never made by HP.

HP bought the very same marking Canon CX/SX/EX etcetera engines which
Apple bought.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread Paul

With some Laserjets, it's easy to replace the rollers that usually
need replacing. Some of the older ones especially were a pain that
way.

You also don't want to go too old (older than the various Laserjet 4
models), because then you get ozone emissions from an earlier printing
technology. And I think the 4's were the first to have 600 dpi. And
front paper feed is more reliable than top.

With color inkjet printing, some stores may offer an arrangement where
you buy the printer and a contract that lets you trade in the printer
for a new comparable one for free within a certain time period. It
might end up being more economical than buying a new printer and then
buying replacement ink cartridges. People often give away perfectly
fine inkjet printers when they run out of ink, because it's cheaper to
buy a new whole printer than to replace the cartridges.

Inkjets generally aren't very economical for occasional printing. I'd
love to find out about one where the ink keeps well when just sitting
there for months, while still producing good pictures when it's
finally used.

The CX marking engine (Apple LaserWriter and LaserWriter Plus, also
HP LaserJet and LaserJet Plus) requires almost completely
disassembling the printer in order to change the rollers.

Makes sense, as the CX marking engine was originally a photo-copier
which was later converted to a laser printer.

You DO have to separate the "clamshell" in order to get to the
rollers, thereby removing the "upper case", and to get to the
registration roller you have to completely disassemble the "lower case".

This is somewhat easier on the SX marking engine, but it is still not
that easy.

This flaw was resolved on the EX marking engine.

The "4 series" ... Pro 630, 16/660, LJ 4, LJ 4M ... were the first
OPC (organic photoconductor) drum machines to offer 600 dpi, provided
enough RAM was installed, otherwise these were limited to 300 dpi.

The first 600 dpi printers were the selenium-drummed printers from
Agfa, I believe, and which were sold as low-cost imagesetters.

Cool! I use a HP LaserJet 2100tn at home. got it for free, it was
broken found a piece of case plastic in the toner cart
roller. pulled it out and it worked great for a couple of years
any how.I'm sure it got a quite a bit of use in it's past life,
prints are getting degraded now, leftover toner from previous prints
ends up on the next couple of pages. can hardly see it when
printing just text, but if an image is in there it gets bad.

anyone know what's wrong with it? worth fixing? thinking a
LaserJet CP2025dn might be a good replacement if it comes to that.
It'd be nice to do color prints (I've got a 2.5 year old, so I'd like
to print those preschool activity page type things in color).

At work we've got a HP 8100dn and a 6MP that have been chugging
along for quite a while, never broken, ever.

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-23 Thread GKHannon
I have no intention of getting into minutia-related disputes, and will only
relay my own experience.

I have had two Epsons, and have already gotten rid of one and will get rid of
the second when its ink runs out.

My problems have been:
(a) the absurd cost of Epson inks;
(b) the inability to print in black merely because one of the color
cartridges is out;
(c) the clogging -- perpetually, it would seem -- of the nozzles, once the
printer is over around one year old.

I have gone back to HP, which I originally left due to a software conflict
(then using OS 9 on an unupgraded G-4 Quicksilver).

I'm now on Tiger on both my Macs; on my RAM-upgraded G-4, already using the
HP, I have had no software conflicts, and love the quality, and the cost, and
the speed, of the HP's output.

I have an HP Laserjet 4000, extracted from a client's leaky, rodent
and bug infested storage building. Printed with streaks, smudges,
lines and blank spots. Rescued it from the dumper and took it home.
Cleaned it out with compressed air, cotton swabs and dust free cloths
everywhere I could get to. Put in a new toner cartridge and it's been
giving me excellent prints for the last 5 years. Not heavy usage, but
probably run 30-40 reams of paper through so far, plus envelopes and
disc labels.

Also have 2 - HP 4315 AIO printers and a 6988 wireless, color printer.
Never had any serious problems with HP... 'cept their ink cartridges
cost too d**n much (Tho' the company reimburses me for much of it)! ;-)

2610 5-in-1 (print/fax/scan/copy/photo and a Canon i860 which was
purchased first, to go along with a new digital camera in 04. The HP
came home when the better half wanted some copying and fax
capability. Little did we know what a journey we embarked on. the
Canon is now hooked up to the airport and works flawlessly, as long
as it is fed. The HP is now hooked up straight to main computer,
dual G5 1.8 (june '04, running 10.4.11). What took almost 6 months
to discover was the inability of the 2610 to work its multiple
functions on a family computer set up for fast user switching. That
is when it came off the Airport and was plugged in directly. Then
last time I tried to scan/OCR some data in, hp wanted me to
deinstall, reload and reinstall the drivers-EACH & EVERY time someone
else used the computer.(on the 4 users who wasn't the main guy) That
was about 6 months ago and I haven't seen lately if they have
upgraded the support/driver. It boils down to failure of my
researching the product and the salesman's level of knowledge when I
described what I wanted to do.

I realize both my printers are aged things now, but until I know
things will change for the better that is where I am stuck. Enjoy
the quality of both and the ability to print to photo paper.

My parents use a PSC 1315 at their house on windows. It is indeed a
pita. They've had constant trouble with it's drivers not loading for
everybody. I've had no trouble with it when I used it on my iBook, but
then I only had one user account.

IF ... and only IF you can get the drivers installed and you only have
yourself, the PCS works very well.

However the printers I've had myself I never had any problems. My
first printer was a Deskjet 550. then up to 613C. then to 850c.

I now have a Deskjet 990cxi and a Deskjet 5650. The only real problem
that I have is the 990 leaks. Otherwise the 990 works wonders from an
airport express. The 5650 I keep connected directly to my main
computer. I have a doublesided printing module installed, and I keep a
photo ink cartridge so that I can print off scans from my flatbed
scanner.

Obviously there can be chances that you could get an equally bad HP as
with a Canon or Epson. I have a Stylewriter 1200 that is still
chugging along.

Really depends on the quality of the materials used to make the
printer and how well they develop the driver. As with the previous
posters Photosmart and my parents PSC, HP's all-in-one software for
these two models is nothing to write home about.

Curious question: How does Epsons or Canons AIO software and drivers
compare to HP's?

I have gotten quite a number of printers that the local Salvation Army
would toss out. They'd stick them on the shelves with a piece of tape
on them marked "Works" and when they didn't sell they'd simply toss
them.
I might have to post the list of tem one day.

Just my .02, I switched to Canon when an Epson I had had for a couple

more than a year died, and Epson told me too bad, it was out of

I'd have to buy another. I was disgusted, and will probably never buy
another Epson product.

The Canon is on its second year with no problems - it's a cheaper

it works very well.

I emailed HP about my printer and they said it's not compatible with
Mac OSX Leopard. I'm going to give it to my brother who's on a PC and
see if he can use it.

What do think of the new Kodak printers? I doubt many people have them
yet since they are new but the ink is going to be much less expensive,
like half the price of most others. Also, it's an all-in-one for $100.
I'm thinking about it. I want to stick with an inkjet because that's
what I'm familiar with.

Laser is about 10x cheaper per page than inkjet. If you need photos
printed, the professional printing does a better job much cheaper than
any home printing. For instance Kodak Gallery (formerly Ofoto) is
known for excellence, or even Walgreen's or Walmart. Of course, people
want instant gratification and will pay almost any amount for it.

Answer to specific KODAK question.

Cartridge went dry in my HP -- New ink = +/- $40

New local discounter had KODAK Easyshare 5100 for $45 (? don't
remember exactly)
Kodak = new printer + copier + Scanner for about the same as new ink
for the HP --- So I got the KODAK.

Have since run the Black cartridge dry, Took a few days to get some
ordered --- should be here Mon. or Tue. All in all, I'm happy with
the KODAK.

Probably true, if you're talking about 4-digit model numbers, and not
older models like the 4, 5, and 6 series (except for the top loading
ones). II's and III's are sturdy, too, but they're getting awfully
old, though I bet they still have some big fans.

I forgot before that the top-loading models have an "L" in the model
name; e.g., 4L, 5L, 6L. "D" means duplex, "M" means Postscript-ready,
