No. Your public IP is available to all. The rest is just stuff
within your ISP's public infrastructure.

hum. Perhaps that strip was adding noise to the phone line.

It's not an "overstatement" per se. They've set those caps in the
modem and DSLAM and their network is more than able to handle the
speed. It's up to you and your line's quality to do the rest.
Seeing 80% of your caps, on DSL, is great!

By comparison, hybrid fiber/coax networks, such as Comcast's, often
provide only 40 to 60% of the caps. Pure fiber (FTTH) networks, such
as Verizon FiOS, often provide 95 to 98%.

Keep in mind that we're kindof stacking the deck here too. The ISP
is selling you a "throughput" based on ONLY that of the first hop
(aka, the last mile). That's the hop from your home to the ISP's
first router. In your case, it's your copper phone line to a DSLAM
box. But we're not testing just that hop! We're testing the whole
connection from your computer, thru your home LAN, thru that first
hop, thru the rest of your ISP's intranet, thru their gateway to
someone else, hop hop hop across hill and dale hop hop hop ... into
Speakeasy's network, to Speakeasy's servers. That's a LOT of added
path. Oh, and the whole thing is run by a Java applet in your web
browser - so we have to factor in the speed at which your computer
runs Java!

hop hop hop

No, not at all, That is simply routing information from the Internet
side of your router to the rest of the world. Your Mac is 'hidden'
behind that router.

I have hidden in quotes, the function of NAT is not to hide an
internal network, but to map external network connections to a non-
routed internal network, but the effect is the same.

Anything on your side of your DSL router isn't reachable from the
outside; your computer has to go out and make the connection.

Dan,

When I suppled this (or other) information above, publicly, did I
compromise my Mac's security?

Thanks,

I have since moved my dsl modem to a new location, taking it off a

No matter what I do I can't get the word "paste" to appear in
anything but gray. I looked in "The Missing Manual" and it said what
you said. However, without "Paste" being dark, I can't make it work.
I've bothered you enough, so I'll say thanks for your efforts.

54 ms is very high for a dns lookup.  Please try this
command:

dig @4.2.2.1 www.google.com

Just select the above text, flip over to Terminal, paste it in.
Then copy'n'paste the results back to your reply here.

If the time reported by this dig is low, under 40ms, then add
4.2.2.1 to the domain name server address field of your Network system

Do you mean dragging text off to the desktop as a clipping? If so just
drag the clipping to your mail.

If you're not selecting stuff first, then your paste will remain
grayed out, because you haven't selected anything to paste, just like
any other program. Terminal is a Mac program just like any other and
follows the same rules as any other Mac program.

Here is the result of a copy/paste of a command like yours. I just

You tell me this works and I believe you, But it doesn't work for me.
I can copy from terminal to my screen, but the word "Paste" always
remains gray so I can't connect from copy to email.

Programs sitting on your computer cannot slow things down, only
running them, so deleting programs you don't use will not help speed
things up, unless they were running at the time.

Computers run slowly for only a handful of reasons:

They're starved for memory, for disk space, for network bandwidth, or
CPU. SOMETHING is making them wait. When the wait is long enough, OS X
pops up the SPOD to let you know.

Lets start by completely identifying the problem:

when you mean 'slow' do you mean performing a certain task or general
unresponsiveness? Faster first thing after restarting or just slow all
the time?

Is it a specific program that you're noticing the problem with? (Note:
this is often not the culprit, merely the sentinel case. I've been
told by people "I have a Word problem, my computer is really slow when
I use it." Go to their desk, and they use Word 99.9% of the time.
Problem is the OS, it's just that they notice it using Word. )

If you use a variety of programs, and the problem mainly manifest
itself using one program or a class of programs (Video editors,
internet applications, etc) this can identify issues that may be the
culprit: If all your internet apps are sluggish, that would indicate
networking issues as a likely culprit.

How many applications do you normally keep running at a time? (Note:
under OSX this is much less of a problem, unless you're very low on
disk space)

What has changed since it was fast? (Note: if your answer is 'nothing
since I upgraded to a faster computer', consider that the slowness may
be, in part, psychological...the computer doesn't seem as fast because
you've gotten used to it, as opposed to when you first got it...it has
happened to me I went from an 800 MhZ G4 to a 2.1Ghz intel iMac..this
thing was mind-bogglingly fast, 'teh snappy' leaking all out and onto
the floor it was so fast. Now a year and a half later? It's the iMac.
I spend time drumming my fingers waiting for it to do stuff sometimes.
The computer is just as fast as it was before, it's just that I've
grown accustomed to it's power and now do stuff I couldn't think of
before, like running two VM's at a time. ;-)

Places to look for problems (this will likely include advice you've
already been given):

Activity monitor: select All processes in the Activity window, and
sort by CPU and Memory. Note particular hogs of either. (if your
computer isn't doing much, Activity Monitor will likely go on up to
the top)

CPU% utilization over %30-%40 is big-time CPU hogging. If the
application is working normally (FCP, iMovie or the like) the solution
is pretty much 'Get a faster computer'...your computer is working as
hard as it can, it can't go any faster.

Memory usage. Look at the Free Memory slice in the memory usage pane.
If it's very small, things will start slowing down, particularly if
you have numerous applications running (not just open, but actively
doing things) at the same time. Solution: stop doing so many things at
once, restart the big memory users to see if it's a memory leak
(notorious with Safari and flash, in particular) or get more memory.

Start the console applications, watch the error messages. If a certain
application or system interface is spewing error messages while it's
being slow, that could point to a broken application, or hardware issue.

I had a B&W that was plugged into an Apple ADC display with a failing
USB hub. The system would slow donw and come to a halt, it seemed,
although the mouse would still track. After 20-30 seconds, the system
would 'catch up' to anything down during the slowdown. When this was
happening, the system log was being flooded with USB port errors.

Start in safe mode, particularly in 10.4 or 10.5, this clears a lot of
gunk out in the form of font and system caches.

Scour your fonts for damaged or corrupted ones, using FontBook.

Use Onyx Macjanitor or a similar app to purge the logs.

Create a new test user. Log on as this user and use the system for a
while. If you experience the same issues, it's a systemic problem,
possibly a corrupted system install, an incipient hardware failure or
a simple case of "computer just ain't up to the task".

If the problems go away, then the issues is something associated with
your usual login account: a startup item, local fonts, program caches,
preferences something like that.

If ll else fails, a complete system rebuild like yours may actually be
necessary, sometimes gremlins can get in and just wreak havok on the
system...but this is WAAAY less likely

A 61ms dns response is a bit slow.

Try this command:

   dig @4.2.2.1 www.google.com

If the time it reports is a lot lower, then add 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2
to your domain name server address list, in the Network system

No. I wanted the above two commands typed into Terminal, then
provide the results here.

The dig command tests your DNS servers; the domain being looked up
can be anything. The traceroute shows me the path between you and
Speakeasy, with timings at each step. With that information, we can
usually figure out where the slow-down is occurring... then decide
how to approach fixing it.

Those are essentially the same types of tests that the Verizon tech
ran. But he's concerned with only your connectivity within Verizon's
network. I want to examine the whole picture -- the path through the
network, through Verizon's network, into your home, into your Mac.

That's what they did a few years ago ... assigned a different range
of IP addresses that would be automatically assigned to this area
(Lynchburg).

I called just now, and they went through a lengthy process, including
getting me to restart my modem ... then the speed went back up (new
IP address) ...

Then ... they said there was nothing they could do, because the speed
was back up.

I feel I have invaded this thread ... but the problem sounded the same.

I'll retreat ... didn't understand what you wanted above ... a Google
Search with "dig" and a speed test on Speakeasy?

Its back up to:

Speakeasy — Speed Test
Test your internet connection speed!

By measuring the download and upload rate from the following
locations you are able to accurately measure your current line
throughput or internet connection speed.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 733 kbps (91.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 125 kbps (15.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

So I'll retreat.

Good.  That's a decent percentage of your rated caps - so
your thoughput is good.

The problem seems to occur with with

Firefos.

Ok.  Now we need to see if your DNS is working correctly,
hence the dig and traceroute commands described below:

Launch Terminal.app and issue these two

Usually, I get the same / similar Speed Test results, also have
verizon dsl.

But

Tonight I am getting 544 / 126 ... and everything downloaded is slow.
I was going to call verizon, because I think it's on their end ...
having solved a similar service problem last year by them
volunteering to switch the IP address to one that is not being used
as much ... but they're quite agitated these days ...

Have you tried moving your ethernet cable to a different port, if
you're connected hard-wired to the DSL modem/router? Sometimes a
multiport router will acquire a bad port ... or so I've experienced.

Although, since your Down/Up speeds look alright, I'm not sure you're
connected to a failing ethernet port.

Hello,

Since I can't add speed to my computer even though I've recently

Buy a new external HD, start with my installation OS CD and slowly

Sorry. I don't buy it. I know how Verizon's network works. They DO
NOT reduce customer caps because they have more than one computer.
EVER. There are a myriad of reasons for poor throughput, all of
which have specific solutions. It just takes some effort to diagnose
it.

Did you get any sort of ticket number from Verizon when you called?
If you can provide, I can forward it to a local manager who can have
that person "corrected" then initiate whatever investigation toward
your difficulty is necessary.

Verizon Tech told me late last night, if:

"you have 2 computers using the same verizon DSL connection, they
will cut your speed in half".

That makes "sense".

They went up in price this year ... guess cutting the service you've
had with them for years, in half, makes sense.

While they're talking so fast you cannot get a word in edgewise ...

LOL.

Two other things to try if Safari is slow:

1. Safari will open faster if you set it to bring up a blank page at
startup. (See preferences)

2. If you are using a third party Ad Blocker such as SarfariBlock try
disabling it. The ad blocker can really slow down down the rendering
of pages.

almost half from time to time for the last month or so ...

We might need to call them and have them assign a better ISP URL or
whatever its called, to re-assign us to the better service.

Terribly annoying ... and somewhat "verizon".

All I need to do is turn off the modem ... wait about 20 seconds and
start it back again. The connection usually moves back to top speed
864 / 160 ...

But a call to verizon tech service wouldn't hurt ...

Where did the Speed Go?

2008-10-11 Thread Wilton Shaw
Hello,
About a year or so ago, I upgraded my internet speed to Verizon DHL
and noticed a considerable improvement. Recently, things have slowed
way down. When I open Safari I have to wait 20 or more seconds for the
home page to open. When I try to open any other page, the blue ribbon
at the top of the page takes 20 to 60 seconds to cross from left to
right to reach a point that activates any movement.
Any suggestions as to what has happened?
I have an eMac, using OS 10.5.5.
Thanks

Wilton Shaw

Re: Where did the Speed Go?

2008-10-11 Thread Jeffrey Engle

do you mean DSL? if you have a DSL modem, unplug it from the wall,
wait 5 mins and plug it back in. You might also check into upgrading
the modems firmware. Jeff
