[Audyssey] pocket pc games

2007-03-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

Are there any blind-friendly pocket pc games? Since msp is available for
pocket pc, and blind people can use pocket pcs now, I'd like some games to
play, if possible.

My apologies regarding the previous post, Thomas had not mentioned this

purchases, although frankly this topic has gotten fairly astray from gaming

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review

2007-03-03 Thread Che
  Hi Jason,
I am writing this so Thomas doesn't have to be the bad cop all the time.
As moderator, Thomas has asked that this topic be closed, and I think as
members we should respect that. I for one give the messages Thomas and Raul
send special priority and make sure I read them since they are the
moderators of the list and I want to respect their wishes regarding the
list.
Secondly, I'm not sure why you don't use periods to seperate your
sentences when you post, but it makes it very hard to understand what you
are talking about and is frankly a bit inconsiderate of the rest of us that
read your messages.
No major big deal, but I thought you might want to consider using some
punctuation so your messages get red instead of going straight into peoples
delete box.
On the other hand, you get a big smiley sticker for spelling, grin.
  Take care,
  Che

If they are, then you're not supposed to be able to do anything with them
until they're actually needed. If you try using the gems or the tome even in
a safe location nothing happens, so that avenue is still sort of in doubt.

i have an idea of what the problem may be with troopanum and pipe2. the
sound encryption/decryption is done using an external library, it may be the
library itself, not the game that's causing the problem with vista.

hth.

2007-03-03 Thread shaun everiss
NOthing is secure josh, if it were, then no access if to secure.
However as long as we have systems people will find ways to get into these
things.
Myself I just use xp as it is.
Maybe when I get vista people will have modified their programs, ie readers,
and other things that require admin rights to tell the user that they need
rights or even better still intercept the errors and bring up dialogs.
Just like any system there will be probably a workaround for those of us lazy
enough to bother about it.

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jason,
I have found a work around to make Jim's games to work on Vista with no
compatibility issues. I have sent Jim a copy of what to do, and probably
at some point he will put it up on his site or somewhere.
I have for the most part located work arounds to get 99% of accessible
games to play under Vista. The exception to that rule is Troopenum and I
think it was Pipe I can't even start without crashing.
Just in case if anyone asks if the downloads were damaged i tested them
on my laptop which still has XP and the ran fine so there is certainly
up with Vista and Troopenum II.

Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
That is a given. Any network admin, programmer, etc can tell you there
isn't a realistic way to make an operating system 100% safe and secure.
However, that doesn't mean we don't try, and not use security because
there is no way to fully have a secure operating environment.
For example, a 10% chanse of being hacked looks allot better than a 50%
of being hacked. At some point without security inplace especially
strong security you are playing rush and rulet with a loaded gun.
Why do we have antivirus programs? To hopefully secure ourselves from
the majority of viruses. Why do we have firewalls? To close ports, and
protect ourselves from incoming and outgoing traffic that would be
harmful to the os. Why do we use SSL, secure socket layer, when
transfering billing info over the internet? To hopefully, keep hackers
from cracking the data stream and obtaining credit card numbers,
addresses, phone numbers, etc of the customer.
Bottom line, each layer of security makes that 50% chanse smaller and
smaller. You might start at 50% of being hacked go to 40%, 30%, 20%,
10%, etc... It won't be 100%, secure and safe but you might be very
close to it.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jason,
Agreed. We shouldn't jump to absolute conclusion about Vista just yet.
Things could change in a later service pack or Windows update.
We are talking about an os barely a month old, and things are bound to
come up which needs smoothing out that could t take a few months to work
out.
When XP came out it was very buggy, had issues, but six years later it
is the most stable and advanced operating system MS has ever come out
with. A couple years from now Vista could potentially pass XP up as the
better operating system.

Re: [Audyssey] pack man versus sarah, a lot of questions from an itching curious gamer

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,
]Wow, sounds like Sarah has sure changed since the last major public
beta of the game. I also like the fact there is less of an exact liniar
progression to the game. As I understand it areas like the Chamber of
Secrets is sort of an unlockable bonus level or secret area you can
explore, but is not required for completion of the main game.
I've seen Star Wars games etc like this. If you blew up a certain wall,
tanks, etc you would find doorways in to bonus levels or areas with
power ups, weapons, you ordenarily could not obtain, but were not
necessary for finishing the game.

Re: [Audyssey] pack man versus sarah, a lot of questions from an itching curious gamer

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
Based on what I have played of Sarah so far I would say Sarah is more
like Shades of Doom than Packman.
The castle layout is a more complex maze than the Packman maze. For
example, there are locked doors, a marble staircase, and rooms you can
enter to find items. To enter the basement or dungeon simply go down the
marble staircase to enter that section of the castle. If you have the
proper spell or whatever you can unlock certain doors which opens up new
levels of the castle and hidden rooms. Generally, speaking the marble
staircase is the way to new levels, but you have to have the proper
spell or key to unlock that next level. Not the same as the SOD
elevators, but the same kind of concept is applied. You have to have the
proper spell or key to unlock the door to advance in the game. One can
not just go from level 1 to level 12 as he or she wishes. You need to
explore each floor of the castle to advance onwards.
As you explore you will find magic items that will help you beat that
and future levels of the game. Invisible cloaks, remember alls, magic
wands, are just a few things that will aid you in your quest.
Especially, when beating ghosts, goblins, and other trouble makers.
fortunately, the creatures aren't as interested in killing you as they
are in scaring you away. Grin.
There certainly are dead ends in the game. YUou might want down a
passage that ends in a locked door, or ends wiuth a burning torch or
suit of armour there. That is a part of exploring which is fun. Not
knowing where you are going, and finding new things all the time.
If you get really really really lost you can always aperate back to your
broom closet provided you have some aperation spells left in your wand.
Besides the broomn closet is a nice place to store items you don't want
stolen by Peve's and other tthiefs. Man, I'd love just for once to have
some dark side power like distruction or something nastier I could trow
at Peve's. Perhaps gate him into another demention. Lol!

Re: [Audyssey] pack man versus sarah, a lot of questions from an itching curious gamer

2007-03-03 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Nicol,
In the Sarah game the layout of the playing area will be more like Shades of
Doom than like Pacman.
There are dead ends and rooms that you need to enter to find items.
The coins you pick up in the Sarah game are like the fruit in Pacman but you
need to use the money to buy candy in the candy store to get energy.
I will be revising the manual prior to the release of the game with changes
from the manual that is now posted.
Since the game is based on the castle in the Harry Potter books it still
would help you a bit to read the books.
I have one beta tester that has not read the books and she can find most of
what is in the game.
On each floor Dobby is there to help you a bit if you can not find
something.
He does not give you the exact solution to where something is but just a
hint.
I am sure someone will produce a walk through once the game is finished in
case you get stuck in not being able to figure out a puzzle.
And about the levels since you start out on level1 and can not go to level 0
I changed the name of the levels to chapters.
You can go directly from chapter 3 which is the second floor to chapter 14
which is the chamber of secrets if you know where the entrance is and use
the correct password.
And I guess someone who has not read the book Chamber of Secrets might find
it hard to do that!
I will be writing a short text article that will give non Harry Potter book
readers some help but I can not give away too many secrets or it will make
the game too easy!
Unlike Shades of Doom, you do not have to visit all 14 chapters to win the
game.
I put the final chapter on level12 since that was the last level in an
earlier version of the game but since then I added two other levels but
again the number of the chapter does not mean much.
When you enter the library you will find books that are talked about in the
Harry Potter books but when you examine them you will only get a short
snippet of text read to you.
Some of the books will help you while others may bite you.
At the beginning of the game Sarah knows twelve spells but some of them she
can only do a limited number of times. So reading the books will not add to
the types of spells but will add to how many times she can use them.

Hope this answers your questions.
Phil

Helllo Everybody why don't we just wait instead of jumping to conclusions
that these features for your mixers won't work for Vista maybe we need to
give the companies more time and then there will be probably a revised
program for vista remember this is what happened with xp when it first came
out it had bugs and features were taken out and if we tell microsoft about
the bugs in the programs or what we want added to the program it will
possibly work.

[Audyssey] Multiplayer deathmatch

2007-03-03 Thread Zachary Kline
Hiya,
Lately I've found myself wishing for some variety of multiplayer
deathmatch. I have friends who are playing games along the lines of Unreal
Tournament every day, and they've gotten me interested.
Might anybody have any suggestions for some suitable alternatives?
Thanks,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
Good question. There isn't a "admin account" as in the old days. There
is some users that are added to an "admin group" which can perform admin
changes, but he/she must launch them from a pull down menu in some
cases, or confirm it in a admin dialog that pops up.
For example, with Jim Kitchen's games to modify the contents of the
program files directory I have to arrow to the extracting zip file,
press context key, and run as administrator before launching that file.
Otherwise Vista will come back with a permission denied error.
This was somethinhg i did not know the first time I tried Jim's Games,
but since then I am getting a feel for Vista and how to get passed these
annoyences simply by knowing where to access the admin rights.
There is a book on Safari on Vista network admin, and one for end users
I want to get as soon as it is out of rough cuts. It should give me a
good look inside how to do allot more with the os.

Hi,

But just because vista has the extra security doesn't mean that viruses and
spyware will be completely eliminated. There wil always be a way around and
people will always find ways to get viruses and spyware in, right?

Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh and all,
Speaking from network admin experience running as administrator is just
not plane safe or computer secure. When you run administrator anything
you download or run under XP has full system wide access potentially
leaving viruses, spyware, and other malware free reign to do what it
wants. General computer safe practice is to have one admin account for
software installs, system wide changes like changing services, and at
least one standard user account for day to day use for internet, email,
office, etc.
I would strongly urge you in the strongest manner possible to move your
data to a non admin account, and use admin for only system upgrades and
other changes you can only make as admin.
A thing everyone here needs to understand when new admins take any
networking course on Windows server or Linux server etc network admin
101 is never run as admin unless absolutely necessary. This fact is
something that has not caught on well with the general public, and the
reason viruses and worms have been allowed to run rampent. Windows 98
etc were not secure operating environments, and even when the os,
Windows XP, etc became more so end users didn't have the know-how or
desire to make XP more secure.
Now, days I think Microsoft is now realising what Linux developers knew
all along is that most general users need to be forced to use a secure
operating environment out of the box. Ubuntu Linux, for example, has the
admin account disabled by default. If you want to do anything you must
run the app via sudo and your super user password. Either that or modify
the script files where the root admin account is disabled for full admin
rights.
Bottom line weather we are talking Windows Vista, Ubuntu Linux 6.10,
FreeBSD, etc the authors of such software are really making the entire
operating environment secure, some might think draconian, but most users
just don't know how to create a more secure operating environment
unless it is handed to them out of the box.
I've heard more than one user here on this list say "I just run XP as
admin," and that is the largest problem with internet security today.
Not running the operating system as it was intended to be run with most
rights disabled unless required as in installs and major changes.

[Audyssey] pack man versus sarah, a lot of questions from an itching curious gamer

2007-03-03 Thread nicol
HI phil and all
I'm patiently waiting for the game to be released. I just have a couple of
questions.
I came across many similarities between pack man and sarah. According to my
understanding, by reading both games' manuals, pack man and sarah works
on the same principle.Where you are eating dots and the bonus object in
pack man you pick up coins, magical items and sweets insarah.
Is the ghost orchestra something similar to the poltergeists in the ghost
home in pack man?
Will the sarah manual that is included with the game once it is released
differ from the manual you put up on your website which we can read at this
stage?
Long ago you said that one will not get stuck in the game completely if one
doesn't have an understanding of harry potter books, but reading harry
potter books do benefit you in playing the game.
Phil you said that for those who haven't read the harry potter books, you
will include a harry potter excerpt in the manual.
Am I correct that sarah and pack man works on the same principle?
I would like to know if the passages in sarah is like those in pack man.
In pack man you will never get a passage where pack man will say|: the
passage terminates abruptly, except if you enter a power pill alcove which
is empty, in other words if you ate the power pill and you pass by that
same alcove later on and you enter that same alcove again, pack man will
say: the passage terminates abruptly.
But other than that no passage in pack man terminates abruptly. It's a
round passage just turning left or right all the time. Well the passages
terminates but not abruptly, the passage either terminates in a left or
right turn.
Is the passages insarah going to work on the same principle or will there
be passages insarah that ends abruptly like in sod?
In sod, a passage terminates abruptly meaning you have to turn 180 degrees
to go the other way, you cannot turn left or right. At most levels in sod,
at the end of the level, you will get a door and then the eva will say: the
passage terminates abruptly. In pack man you never have to turn 180- degrees
if a passage terminates, its either a left or a right turn. The manual said
that the dungin level is level 11 and the ground floor and basement is level
1. but suppose I buy the full game and I'm playing in chapter1 which is the
ground floor and basement, is it possible to go directly from chapter 1 to
chapter 11 or do I first have to play chapters 2 through 10?.
Once I'm in the dungin is It possible to go back to chapter1 which is the
ground floor and basement?
And chapter 12 is the kwiditch pitch and chapter 13 is something else. I
thought the kwiditch pitch is the final challenge in the game, why is
kwiditch pitch then chapter 12 with chapter 13 being something else?
My intentions is pure. Phil is a great developer, I will patiently wait for
him to release the game.
Phil is really an awesome developer. My intention with All These questions
is not to ask for spoilers, in other words, if phil or anyone can answer
these questions, it will not spoil the game before I even bought it.
The thing is guys : I don't want to buy a game which is very complex. I
know the manual clearly said: game play is simple.
It sounds to me from reading the manual that sarah works the same as pack
man. Sarah is in a certain sense a bit more extensive. In pack man you only
eat dots and the bonus object and scare and avoid 4 ghosts.
In sarah you pick up numerous kinds of objects and eat stuff and you scare
not only ghosts but creatures by casting spells instead of eating a power
pill and you also unlock doors in magical ways.
Something else which puzzles me: I noticed that the divination classroom is
a chapter on its own. Is one classroom a large playing area where I can
also pick up objects and scare creatures?
Does every single chapter in the game entails picking up objects or running
from ghosts.
Can I get by in the game with only the manual's instructions without having
to read and memorize harry potter books?
I suppose so. like the sweets, like you told me earlier. The harry potter
reader will know from reading the books that cockroach clusters decreases
the character's magical energy, but for those of us who didn't read harry
potter books we have to taste the sweets and from that distinguish which
ones is good for sarah.
The following statement is found in both the pack man and sod manuals:|
Shades of doom immerses the gamer in a world of action and suspense.
Pack man talks immerses the gamer in a world of fast movement and
suspense.
I noticed that this statement is not in the sarah manual. What would you
call it in the sarah manual, also action and suspense?
Guys let me Tell you something. This post is mainly to make sure that I will
be a happy customer.
Let me quickly relate something. Here in south Africa if you visit a
music store you are allowed to listen to a cd before buyhing it.
If I found a cd which I like then I can have a listen to it.

Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Matthew,
To my knolege. A user can have admin rights, but the system will still
prompt you to confirm an action that will change system wide settings,
installing programs, or running uncirtified programs for the first time.
Windows Vista is a much more secure operating environment than XP etc...
The changes were put in place to crack down on viruses, spyware, and
other applications none of us want, and while it is a bit to get use to
I do feel the changes are in the end benificial to the average end user.
