[Audyssey] Simple sample guess the number game with source code

2007-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi,

For those who have only GMail and have been asking me for my simple sample
guess the number game with source code in BB6 here it is on SendSpace.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/bjvrte

The file name is guessvb.zip. It is a simple sample guess the number game with
it's VB6 source code. It uses the sapi5 text to speech engine and DirectX. I
have commented the code hopefully so that one can tell what each line of code
does. All of my code is in the guess.frm file and starts with the line that
reads
' Sample guess the number game By Jim Kitchen
Everything above that is put there automatically by VB6.

If you have any questions about any of the code or any basic programming in
general, please feel free to ask and I will try to help.

[Audyssey] the machine gun cheet in pipe2

2007-09-02 Thread nicol
Hi
I've experimented a bit with all the cheets. I think there is one cheet
which is actually suppose to be an easter egg rather than a cheet.
I'm not going to give the actual cheet code as it wil be a spoiler, because
gamers is only suppose to get cheet codes once they get more than 2 and a
half million on normal difficulty. But there is a cheet where you can use a
machine gun instead of a normal gun, using this cheet causes the game to end
at level 14, I think this is unfair.
Because this cheet doesn't give me a higher score, neither does it make
the game easier. I can understand that with other cheets its not fair to be
able to get past level 14, such as the cheet where a toolbox is
automatically unlocked for you, that is obvioussly a cheet, it makes the
game easier.
But if you shoot at a thug with a machine gun it doesn't give you an extra
benefit over the normal gun, its just the sound that differs. Its actually
harder for me to get 12 thugs with a machine gun on the bonus round, with
the normal gun I can easily get 12 thugs but with the machine gun I only
can get 10 thugs.
I feel one should be able to get past level 14 when you use this machine gun
easter egg.
Take the easter egg for example where you get a message if you press
spacebar on a trash can, if you use that you can get past level 14. Just
like the message, the machine gun cheet is actually only an easter egg and
doesn't make the game easier at all.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim and all,
First, my apologies for any confusion I have made here regarding any
compatibility with Jim's games and Vista. Now, I shall explain how this
confusion came about just so everyone knows where I am coming from.
Generally speaking the DirectX 8 VB libs as well as the Visual Basic 6
runtime libs should be located in the end users
c:\Windows\System32
directory which is per a standard install.
So I got in to the habit of installing all of my games in a separate
folder like
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Golf
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Monopoly
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Life
and so on. This made the Kitchens Inc folder allot neater, and I
couldn't stand seeing all of his game files just dumped into one
directory. I have a need on my computer to organise everything, and go
nuts when files are not organised and put in some kind of order, and I
always impose order on my files. Thus the separation between Jim's games
and files.
Anyway, to make a long story short since I did not install Winkit I did
not have all the necesary files for those games to run properly under
Vista, and and so copied the necessary files to my
c:\Windows\System32
directory which is really how this should be done which worked.
Jim is correct in that if you install Winkit first, and install
everything to one folder the games will work under Vista as Winkit
contains those missing files, but at the time I wrote my compatibility
chart I did not know this since I was in the habbit of not installing
it. Winkit under XP was a unnecessary package as far as I could see.
Though, now that I am made aware of my error I will of course update my
compatibility chart to reflect both styles of installation. Jim's
official install, and my customised one.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
I can confirm that myself. The Winkit package does indeed solve
compatibility issues as far as I cansee.
However, generally speaking those VB libs should really go in
c:\Windows\System32
where all VB 6 games can access them rather than being in the local
directory where just your games can use them.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
No problem. I'm aware of what needs to be installed to the System32
directory so I'll simply install the libs I need there, and run the
games according to the way I like installing them.
However, officially for the Vista compatibility chart I'll update it to
reflect the installation of Winkit.

Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

No, I definitely will not be repackaging all of my games simply because you
have chosen not to install the winkit.zip file and install the games in a

Hi Kelly,
No, the VB 6 code is not compatible with VB 2005 Express. Visual Basic 6
and Visual Basic 2005 are quite a bit different in structure and design.
As far as what is compatible with Visual Basic 6 you need Microsoft
Visual Basic 6 which is no longer being sold commercially, and isn't
free like Visual Basic .Net Express.

I think you'll get quite the variations of answers on that one. I'm a
rookie programmer, so speed doesn't matter quite as much as my games are
quite simple--so I use vb6. Of course, David Greenwood's engine is
programmed in VB6 too, and is the most advanced game engine for the
blind--but Audio Quake is catching up fast and is programmed in C. I
 might
take on VB.net but I couldn't get the code upgrader to translate the code
from VB6 to VB.net, so I am stuck with VB6 until my two games are done.
After their completion, depending on the difficulty of vb.net, I might
switch over. I've got a game planned out--I just need to figure out how
 to
 execute the code for it.

Hi Willem,
Honestly, I am a bit of a neet freek when it comes to my computer and
files. For example, take the Windows start menu. If you install
everything to the default location your start menu will eventually
become an unsorted mess with 40 or 50 pull down menus.
Ok, in my start menu I have all of my pull down menus organised to
catagory like
under the start menu home and office catagory
I have quicken, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc...
Then, under the start menu Programming and Development catagory I have
Visual Studio, Python, DirectX SDK, .Net SDK, etc...
Anyway, when installing I like to have all of my programs installed in
the Program Files directory under company and then organised by product.
Do I need to do these things. No, but it certainly makes files and menus
easier to fine, and everything is sorted so someone can find what they
want very easily.

 Hi Jason,
It sounds like you got it. Basically, a person, dog, cat, etc are all
objects in a real world. they are person, places, and things in programs.
Think of a dog. It is an object. Now, what do dogs do? They bark, run,
pant, etc right? What you do is program a class for a dog which contains
all the necessary code to make your dog pant, run, walk, play, bark,
 wine, etc.
When you create a new dog object all the features of a dog are available
from it's class. All the features you would expect of that dog.

 jason wrote:

I think what Thomas means by objects are characters in a program meaning
 a

 baseball
game for instance batters are physically people but they are objects or
characters when designed in the computer world. You just have to sit
 back
and imagine what they look like.
I hope I am correct. If I am not then sorry about that, if I explained
 objects wrong.

Based on what I have read TJ has become a sort of shareware

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-02 Thread Damien C. Sadler
I just wish that I could get to grips with .net, and I wish that Vista
wasn't such a huge pain in the backside. If it wasn't for the fact that IE7
is buggy with FTP sites, .net isn't all that accessible, too many
restrictions with Vista, including no WaveOutMix, the menus were different,
and that some of the games I play everyday can't be played on Vista, I'd
probably upgrade now, since I've heard it's got better SAPI voices, better
cd writing capabilities, better DVD playing accessibility features, etc,
etc. I mean, the fact that you have to be administrator to install things,
and not just an administrative user. I think that's going way too far, and
the parental control filtering stuff.

 Hi Jim,
Ah, I see. Yes, for XP users that is definately the case. Though, if I
upgrade to .Net 3.0 the .Net extra installation isn't necessary since
.Net 3.0 is a core part of Vista.
Which is really one of the main reasons I picked .Net as my platform.
The .Net Framework is being included as a core part of Microsoft's new
technologies, Windows Vista, Windows CE 6, and so on, and it's becoming
the new standard for application development for Windows.
Right now XP is the main Windows OS out there, and because it is older
these dependancies I am using need to be added. However, in a couple of
years or so when Vista is more widely used requiring to download and
install the dependancies won't be as big a deal since theywill be
 already included in the OS.

 Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

Thank you, but my point was that allot of people need to down load and
install other software to be able to play your games. Which seems now to
be the complaint about vb6 games.

Hi Damien,
I don't know exactly what your issue with the .Net 2005 IDE is, but I
haven't had that much trouble with it. All of the code files are
editable in notepad and you can use the Jaws or Window Eyes curser to
read the output Windows and build logs.

Re: [Audyssey] Audio Game Programming Languages

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, .Net deals allot more with name spaces than does VB 6. For example
System.Windows.Forms
is the actual name space that the Form class resides in and if you don't
have a using directive, AKA Import, at the top of your source code the
full path to the Windows Form class is
System.Windows.Forms.Form.
Of course the System.Windows.Forms namespace holds allot more than the
Form class. It holds classes for buttons, list views, etc...

i'm just about trying to grasp that concept, but i'm still finding it

To prevent that just put it up on send space so everyone who wants it

The needing to be a root user is just bring windows into line with linux.
THe speech recognition is also aparently good.
But yeah, I wouldn't touch vista.
At least not yet.
Give it a year or so and someone will have figured out how to make
vista at least semi ok.
At 11:26 a.m. 3/09/2007, you wrote:

I just wish that I could get to grips with .net, and I wish that Vista

restrictions with Vista, including no WaveOutMix, the menus were different,
and that some of the games I play everyday can't be played on Vista, I'd
probably upgrade now, since I've heard it's got better SAPI voices, better
cd writing capabilities, better DVD playing accessibility features, etc,

[Audyssey] Vista corrections was Kitchensinc games

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,

Quote

I mean, the fact that you have to be administrator to install things,
and not just an administrative user. I think that's going way too far,

End quote

I'd like to point out that this security feature can be enabled and
disabled via msconfig in Vista. Like many things about Vista it is
configurable but most people don't know enough about the os to
compitantly turn on or off features they want or don't want.

Quote

 the menus were different,

End quote

Again this is absolutely configurable. There is no need to bash the os
for the end users lack of technical no how in setting things back to the
way XP was, or setting things back to the way 9x was for that matter.
I don't know the blind users need to set everything back to classic look
and feel. Our sighted peers do not use the os that way, and it does
create a golf between us and them in communicating where to click, find
this or that, and classic look and feel is like an old crutch we have
held on to for way too long. However, the fact remains that Microsoft
has left us the ability to do so if we have a preference to do so.

Damien C. Sadler wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] Simple sample guess the number game with source code

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tristan and all,
The Visual Basic 2005 IDE has a VB 6 to VB 2005 converter, but it is far
from a perfect solution.
You can get away with it on simple projects, but for example if your
game uses DirectX 8 and now needs DirectX 9.0C managed libs the
difference is to great for the simple conversion tool to handle. if that
makes sense.
Also even though it might make the conversion for you it won't
necessarily conform the application to make maximum use of good oop
practises, and make the app conform to .Net standards.

Yes i agree. Maybe search in google for a vb6/vs 2005 converter?

Re: [Audyssey] Simple sample guess the number game with source code

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kelly,
As I just said in my prier post. Visual Basic 2005's VB 6 to VB 2005
conversion program is only so so. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it
doesn't work worth a ratts tail.
It all really depends on how complex the conversion needs to be, and how
much the dependancies have changed. Not only that while the conversion
tool will do it's best to make your converted program compile and run it
won't necessarily make the app conform to .Net programming standards or
switch your sstructured code magically into best oop practice.
If this was a real programming project, rather than a simple guess the
numbers game, there would still be allot of hand modification involved
to fully convert the app over to a true .Net application.

Kelly Sapergia wrote:
 Hi Tristan,
I just did that, and found a Wikipedia article about Visual Basic
.net. It says that the Express 2005 edition contains a VB6 converter.
I'm going to try running the source code through it and see what happens.
 Thanks.

sendspace does not have any file limitation. it's just that the free server
gets full and you need to wait sometimes. if the file isn't downloaded for a
few weeks it's deleted though.

 Hi Trenton,
yeah, Angel Of Darkness was very long. In reflection your suggestion to
go with the remake of TR1, Anniversary edition, might be more practical
in some sense. TR 1 is much shorter than it's later sequels.
By the way, TR 1 Anniversary has only 14 levels. They have both
shortened the game some, but put more into the graphics, sounds, and
music. It's a bit of a trade off. It has all the action and adventure
thrill seaking we know and love from the original game, improvements in
the game engine, graphics, sounds, but they have edited out some of the
things of the original as well.
Anyway, it is not a big deal to me personally what they did. It is still
a good game, and really really hard when you can't see what you are
doing. Level 1 requires allot of jumping from ledge to ledge, climbing
up on hand holds, and the entire way of getting Lara to do what you want
 is a pita.

Re: [Audyssey] Tomb Raider and Open Source Ideas

2007-09-02 Thread Trenton Matthews
And I'm refering to the music for Tomb Raider 1, Original. Its that mMelody
in the first song that really makes the mood see quite dreammy, but with
plenty of action. TR 3 through 5 didn't have too much bad music either, but
the theme to TR 1 will always be the one that people will rmember.

 Hello Trenton,

 Quote
The theme song isn't a Tomb Raider favorite tune I personaly liked, and I
hear that the game is a little, um, short.
 End quote

Which TR game are you refering to. I happen to like all of the games,
and I felt every game had good music.
 Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-02 Thread Trenton Matthews
I myself wonder how the ESP Softworks/Draconis's games work. I'm not even
sure if they'd run on vista. By the way, I was gonna say this in another
topic, but I'll be trying out Linux soon! That is, after I'm finnished
downloading it. Its only 44 percent complete. I'm backing up the file for
sure! If Ubuntu has a way to work with Direct-X, I'll let ya know. There is
that one Linux port called Lindows, now called LinSpired, that looks and
feels like Windows, I'm thinking games could be run on that one.
http://www.lindows.com
is the old address, which points to the LinSpired one. I don't know what
the newer one is. Oh and one last thing. Just like Windows, Lindows isn't
free ither.
Hmm. 698 MB download for an operating system, and I'm only at 315 mb. 45
percent as I write.
I wonder if the Kiseeno game, for example, could be imported to Ubuntu
one day.

 Hi Thomas,

Thank you, but my point was that allot of people need to down load and
install other software to be able to play your games. Which seems now to
be the complaint about vb6 games.

 Hi Jim,
Well, that at least is something i can help you with. Go to
 http://www.usagames.us/requirements
and download the .Net Framework 2.0 package and latest DirectX 9.0C
 upgrade.
First, install .Net 2.0 and then DirectX, and you should be set to go.
Though, as I have discussed on list I am highly thinking about going
.Net 3 since that is now what XP and Vista are using primarily. However,
I am still thinking on that score.
