[Audyssey] gamepads

2009-02-13 Thread william lomas

hi i am thinking of buying a gamepad for my cmputer
I gather playing games will be more realistic since it iwll be like
playing a console if that makes sense
which newest gamepad is available now for the blind gamer to use in
our currently available and upcomming titles?

do any of the gamepads offer vibration feedback in games like MOTA etc?

[Audyssey] Top 25 Web Sites for Gamers who are Blind

2009-02-13 Thread John Bannick
Audyssey Folks,

We’ve just released our third annual Top 25 Web Sites for Gamers who are
Blind.

Some new sites, particularly for Macintosh users, some sites went away, boo.

Some sites moved up or down.

We also added lists for gamers who are motion-impaired and gamers who are
deaf.

The interesting thing is that there are 25 top sites for blind-accessible
games, but only 20 motion-impaired and 10 top deaf sites.

BTW. The site I personally hit most often is audyssey.org. Maybe because
I’m a coder more than a player. Probably because our cast of characters
here reminds me of the lunatics I hang out with.

In any event, the lists are at www.7128.com

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 Web Sites for Gamers who are Blind

2009-02-13 Thread AudioGames.net

Hi John,

Thanks for listing AudioGames.net again this year! I would like to add some
comments though...

1) Platforms: Windows. actually, we include ALL platforms - hence our
listings of more experimental games like Demor but also Nintendo DS games
like Sound Voyager.

2) AudioGames.net was founded in 2002, not 2003.
3) You forgot to mention that - similar to PCS Games - AudioGames.net also
links to A BIG LIST of free games that cannot be found anywhere else. This
includes three exclusive Playcenter Games: Drive (Sneller), The Curb Game
and Sudo-San, as well is NO LESS than 42 ! Indie audio games - all available
through The Experimental Audio Games Section
(http://www.audiogames.net/playcenter/index_exp.php). We not only link to
these games, we also host them!
4) Categories: Community, Games, Information, Reviews, Help. don't know
if this falls under the information category, but we are one of the very
few websites out there to list (in an annotated fashion) academic-related
material about audio games, such as academic papers, articles, etc.
(including inaccessible material made accessible). This may not seem like a
big deal, but actually our Resources page
(http://www.audiogames.net/page.php?pagefile=articles) has ended up in
various important publications - something of which I'm personally quite
proud of.
5) You forgot to mention that we also host MOD downloads to various games
(http://audiogames.net/page.php?pagefile=mods) .
6) The audio reviews are not ours (may seem like that how you list it), we
only provide a list of links to audio reviews on other websites.

I would appreciate it if you update your information.

Thanks!

Richard

Yeah, automating the thing might not be a bad idea, would probably save
David Greenwood lots of time, as I imagine every developer must be flooded
with similar requests. But maybe he's just enjoying a short vacation that
he forgot or didn'T have time to announce, or some other real life
circumstances are preventing him from responding faster... Don't forget
that we're all just ordinary human beings, not perfect flawless machines,
performing 100% all the time, so life often interferes with our decisions
and intentions. *smiles*
Just my thoughts, not that this would happen commonly with GMA, as far as
I know.

Hey Dark,

Yep, I've already installed GTC on my laptop and been through the
order wizzard. Copied in my original user code and key too in the
hope that it'd speed up the process for me and make life easy for the
folks at GMA. It's been a few days since the reminder email, perhaps
it's time for another.

Hmmm, surely automating this kind of thing isn't a big job for a
proper programmer. In fact there's probably a few free to use
solutions already in existance is there not.

Hi all, quick question for those of you who perhaps aren't as new to
the accessible gaming comunity as I am.

A few weeks ago I purchased GMA Tank Commander, my first accessible
title to be bought. I've recently sent in a request for my key to be
bound to a second user code so I can travel with the game on my
laptop, but heard nothing back in the 8 days since, despite a gentle
reminder. As far as I'm aware, what I'm trying to do isn't breaching
GMA's licence or anything, and even if it is then a reply informing me
that it isn't possible or won't be happening wouldn't go amiss. My
question is, has anyone else experienced this before, or is there any
advice of things to try next?

TIA

Re: [Audyssey] Warriors2-Castle of Light

2009-02-13 Thread Shadow Dragon
For your first lap, I recommend without question the castle of darkness. The
castle of light is without question the harder of the two, and is all but
impossible at level 50. You'll have to go through more laps and get to a
higher level, 70 or 80, before you can get through the castle. The castle of
darkness is a bit easier and dooable with the right equipment. You can find
it in the underworld, its called the shaft.

There is one thing about dungeon exploration I also forgot to mension.
Explored areas stay explored. So when you walk back through them it just
says you've already explored this area and don't take a turn. So that helps
a lot in navigation too. I will be curious to see a coordinates system go
in, though I truthfully don't think it'll help too much. But I guess we'll
see. The problem with the castle of light, and the dungeon on the elven
island is that they're so insanely massive and open, and the enemies are so
difficult that even with a coordinate system you'd just be wandering around
in hopes of finding something and not dying.

Yes Wil there are good game pads available. Check walmart for the Phillips
Retractable SGC2909 which was made in 2007. You can't buy this one online
but some stores may still have them. $15 is the price. That is the one I
have and it works great with Railracer, Top Speed, Puppy1, and Pong. It
also works with some of the BSC titles as well but I don't have those
titles myself. I have a friend who just bought a logitech wireless
controler for around 30 bucks and he reports that controler works great.
Both of the controlers I've mentioned here have great forced feedback in
them.

Re: [Audyssey] [Spam] Warriors2-Castle of Light

2009-02-13 Thread dark

Hi.

I've noticed the explored thing. The reason i thought a coordinates system
would work is giving you an idea of generally where in the dungeon you are,
so you know more or less which direction your more likely to find things in.

For example in the sewers of Gorgon village, I ended up walking in
circles, - especially when pressing a switch to open a new passage.

It would be great to have some idea where I am in relation to other
locations, - in fact perhaps the coordinates of the square which got the
new passage opened on it could be noted.

At least I don't have to worry about either of the castles for now, sinse
I'm first going to try to get my human to level 50, do some quests and
finally finish.

The problem is I stil end up walking into trouble in some zones with
monsters that instantly attack, but ah well, I can see this is a game
that will take some work.

At least I've now startede on Sryth again, which I can play when my warriors
character dies.

Beware the Grue!

system go in, though I truthfully don't think it'll help too much. But I
guess we'll see. The problem with the castle of light, and the dungeon on
the elven island is that they're so insanely massive and open, and the
enemies are so difficult that even with a coordinate system you'd just be
wandering around in hopes of finding something and not dying.

Yes, I have one of these as well, works great, the only better controller
for RR is a steering wheel, and for that I reccomend the logiTech Momo,
bought mine a few years ago for like $60 if memory serves.
Also, when I'm done with the release of the card games, I'm gonna adjust
the button code a bit so it will be easier to configure your joysticks the
way you want.

Both of the controlers I've mentioned here have great forced feedback in
them.

[Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games

2009-02-13 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I am almost done with my online card games hearts and hold em poker.
I am wanting to include braille output for those dependant on braille
displays.
Both games can currently use jaws as the speech engine as well as sapi, so it
seems it wouldn't be too hard to convert the output to work with braille.
I cannot read braille myself, but if anyone is on list that can either test
the games with a braille display or let me know where I can get more info on
making jaws play nice with braille displays, I'd really appreciate it.
And before anyone says it isn't worth the time due to the few folks playing
games with braille, sometimes you just got to do the right thing and put
yourself in another persons shoes. I know if I were deaf and blind, I would
very much appreciate having access to entertainment like this. If it helps
only one person take their mind off their troubles for a little hwile, it is
well worth it.
  Thanks for any help,

Re: [Audyssey] GMA Games unresponsive to licence requests

2009-02-13 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Scott,
I can say from personal experience that this is very unusual for GMA. I
have keys for more than one computer, and everytime I have requested a
replacement key I have gotten one with in three days of the request. The
only exception to this rule was when David Greenwood was out of town,
and of course it took longer that time, but most of the time I got
prompt and reliable service.

Hi William,
I recommend the phillips 2909 game pad. It is available at wall mart and
goes for $15.99. It has force feedback and just about every other
feature you want out of a game controller. Plus, since you asked,
Mysteries of the Ancients happens to default to that controller layout
since I use it as my primary.

i buy a game, and hmm, some day then i go to some other place where i

i decide to install a game that i awreade have on another computer. but
the thing is, i forget to ask it, and then i will can't play it.
but this thing of product key for certain machines helps in the security

then, it's up to the developer what to choose.

It does cost something... I just can't remember what. As to playing

[Audyssey] Street Fighter IV VS. MK versus DC universe

2009-02-13 Thread Clement Chou
I know a lot of people have MK already, and are probably going to get SFIV as
well. But for all those seriously debating between the two... here's my
two-sense.

I've played both games... up to the most modern ones. After having a bit of a
threat on gamefaqs all about it, I figured I'd give my opinions to the vi
community as well.

I've borrowed a copy of MK versus DCU from a friend of mine, and have been
playing it for a while now. As an honest MK and street fighter fan, I confess
myself to being more on the street fighter side of things. One quote I know
from the thread I mentioned is, MK has always been more about style than
substance. To a certain extent, that is true. MK looks flashy and cool, for a
while, but eventually the slow gameplay mechanics start to get to you. Don't
get my wrong, I like MK. Like it a lot. But in terms of content.. especially in
MK VS DCU, it falls way short and Midway tried to do a lot of things to the
gameplay. Some worked, some did not. Either way, MK wasn't the game it was
hyped up to be... and the m rating got dropped to a t, which also frustrated a
lot of MK fans, me among them.

SFIV, on the other hand, looks good, plays smoothly, and has unlockable
content. A lot of it. Different quotes for acaracters, more characters to
unlock. But the best of all... it has a much deeper engine. You can do a lot of
things in SF that in MK history... hasn't happened very often. The big thing
that always tiled me towards the Street Fighter series slightly more was the
character diversity. Each character has their own style, fighting style that
is, and their own different style of play that's flexible to newcomers and
vetarines alike. Combos are a nice challenge to pull off, and there's stuff in
the engine that you don't really think about until you actually experience
them. As an example... canceling a special move into supers or ultras. MK, on
the other hand... there really isn't too much depth to the engine. Yeah sure
each character has their own set of combos, but when it comes down to it,
special moves are really the only thing that separates one character from
another. In MK, you can play every character the same way and most likely do
okay. But... take a street fighter sinario. If you were to pick Xangief and pit
him up against a character like Akuma, you'll have a good challenge to work
through. Problem? Xangief has no long-rage projectiles, since he's a wrestler.
The result? You have to play defensively unless you can get past Akima's guard.
But once you're through, you can dominate with Xangief close up and damaging
moves like the spinning piledriver... or my personal favorite, the german
suplex. But my point being that SF has a lot more complexity to it. Mk is a
good game, but you know what? SFIV definitely outdoes mk versus DC. Unless it's
just me... since this is only my pinion. But take IGN's reviews for both games,
as an example. MK got a 7.5. SFIV got a 9.3... even though it isn't out yet.
That's the first time I've seen IGN or any gaming site do a review with an
early build... or rather, early release. And... one more thing, audio wise.
Voices at least, I've always liked SF... because if characters shout phrases,
they actually mean something... meaning you can take the Japanese words and
translate them. But in MK.. the only words that come out are random syllables
strung together.

In conclusion, as an mk fan and Street Fighter fan, my opinion given is... SFIV
is better I'm trying to be as unbias as I can, and tried to be as fair as I
could. Hope this helps anyone caught up in this dilemma. All opinions are
appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games

2009-02-13 Thread Lukás Hosnedl

Hi,
I can help you using a Focus 40-80. It amazed me that you can't read braille
yourself. Then I realized that you probably weren't forced nor had any
reason to learn it when you lost your sight in your early 20's, as far as I
remember, but braille output can help and even speed things up a great deal
if you want to double-check any longer piece of text or probably even a
program code. :-) Not to mention mathematical or chemical formulas. *smile*

Subject: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games

 Hi all,
I am almost done with my online card games hearts and hold em poker.
I am wanting to include braille output for those dependant on braille
displays.
Both games can currently use jaws as the speech engine as well as sapi,
so it seems it wouldn't be too hard to convert the output to work with
braille.
I cannot read braille myself, but if anyone is on list that can either
test the games with a braille display or let me know where I can get more
info on making jaws play nice with braille displays, I'd really appreciate
it.
And before anyone says it isn't worth the time due to the few folks
playing games with braille, sometimes you just got to do the right thing
and put yourself in another persons shoes. I know if I were deaf and
blind, I would very much appreciate having access to entertainment like
this. If it helps only one person take their mind off their troubles for
a little hwile, it is well worth it.

 Thanks for any help,

[Audyssey] Top 25 Web Sites for Gamers who are Blind

2009-02-13 Thread John Bannick
Hi Richard,

Thanks for your help with the Audiogames.net entry.
I just made the changes.
Here are the details (warning, it's lengthy):

1) Platforms: Windows. actually, we include ALL platforms - hence our
listings of more experimental games like Demor but also Nintendo DS games
like Sound Voyager.

Since you are no dummy, it’s obvious that we didn’t make clear that we
cover only Windows and Mac. So I did two things: a) Changed the
Methodology section to emphasize this. b) Added Macintosh to your entry.
(Sorry I missed that.)

2) AudioGames.net was founded in 2002, not 2003.

I got that date from the Wayback Machine at archive.org, where your
earliest entry is 2003. I changed the date to what you said.

3) You forgot to mention that - similar to PCS Games - AudioGames.net also
links to A BIG LIST of free games that cannot be found anywhere else. This
includes three exclusive Playcenter Games: Drive (Sneller), The Curb Game
and Sudo-San, as well is NO LESS than 42 ! Indie audio games - all available
through The Experimental Audio Games Section
(http://www.audiogames.net/playcenter/index_exp.php). We not only link to
these games, we also host them!

We did indeed say that you offer “…over 300 FREE downloadable accessible
games…” BTW. Dark bonked me on the head earlier to be sure I said that.

I added a reference to your excellent links page and a note about the 42+
Indie audio games. Thanks for that.

Didn’t mention the hosting because, again, Marketing wants this focused
only on PCs and Macs.

(http://www.audiogames.net/page.php?pagefile=articles) has ended up in
various important publications - something of which I'm personally quite
proud of.

Done. And you should be!

5) You forgot to mention that we also host MOD downloads to various games
(http://audiogames.net/page.php?pagefile=mods) .

Damn! I never considered mods. Had to add that one too. Sorry for the
oversight.

6) The audio reviews are not ours (may seem like that how you list it), we
only provide a list of links to audio reviews on other websites.

Thanks. I clarified that. It’s a good list of resources.

So I think that covers about everything. If you see anything else
egregious, please let me know.

And thanks again for the corrections. This thing is going out to a lot of
people.

John

 Hi Scott.
I purchased VIP Mud from Dave last week, and I know he was getting ready

But I can tell you from personal experience with Dave that he is not

i buy a game, and hmm, some day then i go to some other place where i

i decide to install a game that i awreade have on another computer. but

Hi Scott,
I can say from personal experience that this is very unusual for GMA. I
have keys for more than one computer, and everytime I have requested a
replacement key I have gotten one with in three days of the request. The
only exception to this rule was when David Greenwood was out of town,
and of course it took longer that time, but most of the time I got
prompt and reliable service.

Hi all, quick question for those of you who perhaps aren't as new to

A few weeks ago I purchased GMA Tank Commander, my first accessible
title to be bought. I've recently sent in a request for my key to be
bound to a second user code so I can travel with the game on my
laptop, but heard nothing back in the 8 days since, despite a gentle
reminder. As far as I'm aware, what I'm trying to do isn't breaching
GMA's licence or anything, and even if it is then a reply informing me
that it isn't possible or won't be happening wouldn't go amiss. My
question is, has anyone else experienced this before, or is there any
advice of things to try next?

TIA

Depends on what kind of cable you use to plug it in to the TV. If you want
to, and you use the same type of cables that the ps2 and xbox uses with two
rca audio jacks, you can get an RCA to audio adapter, which allows you to
plug the RCA jacks into your computer's line in jack. Then you either unmute
your line in and select your what you hear which is the best way, or you
just select your line in... and you're good to go.

Ah, yeah, most of the systems I'm gonna be using have what the ps2 and xbox
have.
Even if they don't, I can buy one, specifically for the genesis, which uses
rf (god that's cool though, daisy chain, daisy chain, daisy chain).
Oh, the 3do controller is like that tooo. It even has a headphone jack and
volume dial on it - but the system itself has 1 controller port, but up to 8
controllers can be daisy chained together.

I owned the Panasonic fz-10 model, which was the second version the released
which had a fliptop design, not a tray.
The one I'll be buying will be the fz-1, the first version, with a tray
loading design, we'll see how it works out, rofl a nearly 16 year old system
using a cd tray? Kinda scary.

The nice thing about these systems, though, is I'll be able to burn copies
of games, to see if they're playable. I just recently found that out and am
going to have some fun with it.

Yeah, nobody knew about the 3do, the launch price was close to 700
dollars. So it didn't get much attention.

Ah, yeah, most of the systems I'm gonna be using have what the ps2 and
xbox have.
Even if they don't, I can buy one, specifically for the genesis, which
uses rf (god that's cool though, daisy chain, daisy chain, daisy chain).
Oh, the 3do controller is like that tooo. It even has a headphone jack
and volume dial on it - but the system itself has 1 controller port, but
up to 8 controllers can be daisy chained together.

I owned the Panasonic fz-10 model, which was the second version the
released which had a fliptop design, not a tray.
The one I'll be buying will be the fz-1, the first version, with a tray
loading design, we'll see how it works out, rofl a nearly 16 year old
system using a cd tray? Kinda scary.

The nice thing about these systems, though, is I'll be able to burn
copies of games, to see if they're playable. I just recently found that
out and am going to have some fun with it.

Depends on what kind of cable you use to plug it in to the TV. If you
want to, and you use the same type of cables that the ps2 and xbox uses
with two rca audio jacks, you can get an RCA to audio adapter, which
allows you to plug the RCA jacks into your computer's line in jack.
Then you either unmute your line in and select your what you hear which
is the best way, or you just select your line in... and you're good to
go.

Re: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games

2009-02-13 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
I have two different braille displays I can test with. I'll be happy to try it
out. I'm deaf blind, but I have enough hearing to play audio games and to not
use braille but rather speech primarily. that said, I do know what being deaf
blind is like and I'd be glad to try it out to see how things worked.

Subject: [Audyssey] Using braille displays with accessible games

Hi all,
I am almost done with my online card games hearts and hold em poker.
I am wanting to include braille output for those dependant on braille
displays.
Both games can currently use jaws as the speech engine as well as sapi, so
it seems it wouldn't be too hard to convert the output to work with braille.
Thanks for any help,
Che

[Audyssey] Fixing TTS in Vista?

2009-02-13 Thread Casey Mathews
Hello guys. I have a few games that use text to speech. For some reason, I
cannot use tts voices on my vista machine. Narrator works, but that is all.
None of my games work with Text to speech. When I open the TTS applet in the
control panel, it eithers does not open, or if it does open, I do not have
any text to speech voices, like Anna, RealSpeak, etc. Does anyone have an
idea of how I can repair these voices?

Thanks

Casey

one way you can get round the key issue is to have a laptop you register with.
I have one with cable internet and wireless.
At 10:31 a.m. 14/02/2009, you wrote:
yea, i didn't purchased any games from gmagames, but it may take some

this is why i prefer to buy games that are not needed online
registration, bekause with my laptop for example, it's really not
everyday that i connects it to the internet, for example.
i buy a game, and hmm, some day then i go to some other place where i
don't have internet connection, like a city that i stay near a beach
that i doesn't have connction, and i'm bored, without anything to do, so
i decide to install a game that i awreade have on another computer. but
the thing is, i forget to ask it, and then i will can't play it.
but this thing of product key for certain machines helps in the security
thoug.
then, it's up to the developer what to choose.

Assunto: Re: [Audyssey] GMA Games unresponsive to licence requests

Hi Scott,
I can say from personal experience that this is very unusual for GMA. I
have keys for more than one computer, and everytime I have requested a
replacement key I have gotten one with in three days of the request. The
only exception to this rule was when David Greenwood was out of town,
and of course it took longer that time, but most of the time I got
prompt and reliable service.

Scott Chesworth wrote:

 TIA
 Scott
