Re: [Audyssey] any recommendations for a good gaming joystick?

2009-05-05 Thread Che
Yah, had a friend when i lived in los angeles that had a racing setup in
an old bathtub he had padded out, with a huge subwoofer underneath and dolby
5.1 around the tub, and his steering wheel mounted inside the tub with a big
friggin monitor on a custom platform. His racing wheel was a custom aluminum
job, cost over a thousand dollars, and had a clutch as well, although as I
remember there was only one racing game at the time that would take
advantage of the clutch.
He was so dedicated to realism he wore gloves and a helmet while racing,
the dude was into it. I used to be in an online racing league with him, and
he was by far the best of us all, in both oval track and road courses. Those
online racing leagues were a total blast, because all the guys in them were
die hard racing fans, like myself.

Speaking of, wonder what I can get an antique bathtub for on eBay...

I used to have a sidewinder steering wheel too. It was good but I never
really got the hang of using it. I loved the gas pedal and break, but what
I'd love is a racing wheel with an actual gear shift - though its probably
way out of my price range. I hear there are real life driving games with
wheels with a clutch, break, and gas pedal. Now that would be fun.

I use a logitec wingman rumblepad. As the name implies the controller
includes motors for force feedback. You need to install the software
from the cd or internet in order for games to pick up on its force
feedback qualities. It's a nice gimic but the rumble isn't very
powerful. I got the controller cerca 2001. It looks kind of like a
hybrid between the ps2 and dreamcast/xbox1 controllers - two wacky
looking protrusions out front, 2 decent (if a little flimsy) analog
sticks, 6 main buttons (which are a little small), a d-pad and a few
other buttons for switching control from d-pad to left analog stick
and back and toggling force feedback on/off. It isn't the best
controller - I used to have a microsoft sidewinder whose buttons and
dpad were a little more solid and big - but it's fun to use with games
especially top speed. One advantage resultant of joystick use in-game
is that you don't have to shut down your screenreader (and in some
cases, you don't even have to have the game window in focus - I can
play topspeed while chatting in an msn window though I won't be able
to hear the other cars on the track).

Nick you canceled the cast for flight sim.
Its supposed to be reschedualed or at least I think you said it was, Just
wandered when you were going to put this online so i could join in the live
cast.
On that note at some point this month and for the next 2-3 months I will have
some testing work which means not as much commenting for a little although I
will have fridays off.

hmmm actually if you dropped the 1024 by 768 monitor etc you only really need a
3d card that supports open gl.
they don't say how high.
As for memmory our duel cure 2ghz with 1gb ram will actually do nicely for fast
performance in fact a 1ghz system with 300mb ram would run it, well 512 should
I say.
a single core probably would run it if at least slow.
there is however no mention of sound in the game at all.
The game is much cheaper than fs, about 40 bucks us per version, so about 100
here which thinking about it is not as bad as ms fs is costing.

2009-05-05 Thread Constantine

Hi Jim,
Well, it is true that the Logitec Momo Racing Wheel costs a fair amount of
change but I know there are cheaper racing wheels out there. I've seen a
couple now and then under $50 so as long as those cheaper moddels work,
which I think they would, it is not really that big an investment for some
of us on the list.
Anyway, i think you are making the right decision for the game. It is your
game, and you should create it exactly how you like it. If others don't
like it, have a problem wih it, it is there problem. It is not as though
you have charged them money to play it, and therefore owe them upgrades,
extra features, or whatever might come with a commercial product.

Smile.

the Logitech MOMO Racing controller is not cheap. It costs like $100.00.
I'm sure that allot of people are not going to or can not spend that kind
of money for a specific game controller. I got half of it as a gift and
paid for the other half. Then I learned the VB6 joystick code. So I
then wanted to write a game that used the steering wheel and was as close
to being like real driving as I could make it. So I am not going to dumb
down the game for the keyboard. I am sorry that the game will probably
not be as much fun with a non steering wheel controller and even less so
with the keyboard, but hey I could have written it and just kept it for
myself.

Thanks again and BFN

the mouse works great for rail racer, no reason why it wouldn't work

Hi,
Yeah, Rail Racer supports racing wheels. While Rail Racer seams to be
fairly mouse oriented it works equally well with the wheel too. Having
seen that support in Rail Racer and Topspeed I'm rather interested to see
the new Mach 1.

Why pay for the wheel? Because it will work for Mach 1, it does work for

Speed, and it's supposed to work for Raceway. Sorry Che but I've been a

If they don't want to pay 20 dollars for a controller for a free game,
then

they don't have to play the free game. I might possibly understand them
getting mad if the game cost 50 dollars and they still had to buy that
controller, but come on. The game is free.

Besides which, we need to get with the times.

To get a similar effect using keys you would need to use something like
the whole numbers row.

1 would be speed 2
2 speed 4
3 speed 8
4 speed 16
5 speed 32
6 speed 64
7 speed 128
8 speed 256
9 speed 512
0 speed 1024
Just the number moves you forward
the number plus shift would move you left
the number plus control would move you right
the number plus shift and control would reverse your direction.
So 11 keys could do what one joystick or mouse could do.

advantages to joystick movement and action when you described it as you

How about having to type -5000 to determine your movement during a fast

Hi,
It isn't an issue of annalogue verses digital devices. it has to do with
how operating systems and programs recieve input from those devices.
Keyboards return a key pressed or key released state back to the
operating

system or program polling it. Since a key can only be held down or
released there isn't any other state the key can be in. This is
different
from a joystick that has a wide range of motion and movements left,
right,
back, foward, or a combination of these. Obviously, since the joystick
has
such a wide degree of movement you can program much more complex tasks
for

it.
If you wanted a player to run using a keyboard pressing up arrow might
start him walking. Add a shift or control key and he breaks out into a
run. This works, but you don't get a lot of control over speed other
than

a walk or a run because a key can only be pressed or released.
Now, on a joystick since the y axis has a range of -5000 to 5000 you can
speed up or slow down based on the y axis. If the axis is 0 the player
is

stopped. If you push the stick foward or backward the closer you get
to -5000 or 5000 you can continue adding speed and momentum until the
player reaches the proper speed. This gives you a huge advantage over
the
keyboard because you have a steady increase from standing still to an
all

out run. Much smoother, realistic, and advance than the clunky keyboard
method.

h I did some doodling with my wingman force 3d.
Either I have a dud but I can't get things centred or rather the stick is
just to darn sensitive for my liking.

plus I can only do so many things at once.
Its got loads of power in the moters, but games I tried are just not that
good for it.
topspeed and railracer may be although I use the mouse for rr and the
keyboard for ts.
sod as I said things spin round all the time slowly like its not
calibrated, on that note how does one calibrate these things I followed
the instructions but I don't know exactly what I really need to do to get
things going with it.
I here ffb sticks don't have the prosition centering feature defined as
well as other sticks.

my sighted friends say its hard to centre the stick.
If say troopinam or something has controls for the stick I run out of
buttons and 2 of them are at the extreme back so I'd have to use the board
and stick at the same time and its a bit impractical right now.

So I suspect I won't be playing with a stick.
or at least that one.
I have a simple non force feadback stick here a simple usb side winder I
got for 20 bucks.
this has the basic centre game pad stick control like a cross for up down
left and right, 4 buttons on the top right and 2 sets of r1 and 2 buttons
on left and right like the old ps1 controlers.
its not ffb however its got 8 buttons as supposed to the ffb stick I have
which has 6.
it does mean that I will have no keyboard control but means I can map more
buttons.

and I may actually use one of these.
I don't have the cash to get any extra things.
maybe if I sell my controlers one of these days I may have the cash for
something although this is the last time i will get an actual stick, I

something like that with 2 sticks and the rest.

I use the same controller, and it seems to be a good one. It is the only

Re: [Audyssey] any recommendations for a good gaming joystick?

2009-05-05 Thread shaun everiss
h I did some doodling with my wingman force 3d.
Either I have a dud but I can't get things centred or rather the stick is just
to darn sensitive for my liking.
plus I can only do so many things at once.
Its got loads of power in the moters, but games I tried are just not that good
for it.
topspeed and railracer may be although I use the mouse for rr and the keyboard
for ts.
sod as I said things spin round all the time slowly like its not calibrated, on
that note how does one calibrate these things I followed the instructions but I
don't know exactly what I really need to do to get things going with it.
I here ffb sticks don't have the prosition centering feature defined as well as
other sticks.
my sighted friends say its hard to centre the stick.
If say troopinam or something has controls for the stick I run out of buttons
and 2 of them are at the extreme back so I'd have to use the board and stick at
the same time and its a bit impractical right now.
So I suspect I won't be playing with a stick.
or at least that one.
I have a simple non force feadback stick here a simple usb side winder I got
for 20 bucks.
this has the basic centre game pad stick control like a cross for up down left
and right, 4 buttons on the top right and 2 sets of r1 and 2 buttons on left
and right like the old ps1 controlers.
its not ffb however its got 8 buttons as supposed to the ffb stick I have which
has 6.
it does mean that I will have no keyboard control but means I can map more
buttons.
and I may actually use one of these.
I don't have the cash to get any extra things.
maybe if I sell my controlers one of these days I may have the cash for
something although this is the last time i will get an actual stick, I think my
next controler will be a game pad or maybe an xbox 360 unit or something like
that with 2 sticks and the rest.
Feadback is good but I don't know.

That would be cool. I’ve never looked at the program. But just from
what you’ve said, it sounds sweet.
Just a quick update about the pocast we were going to do to demo fs 2002
We are still planning on doing the podcast. We just are trying to find
the time to sit down and demo it. So once that’s done, we’ll get it
over to you guys. Trust me, you’ll be the first to know!
So look forward to that soon!
I would say, if you really want to get in to using this when we do the
podcast, buy a copy of Microsoft Flight simulator now. That way, when
we make the podcast, you can just jump right in!
So that’s at least something you start to do if you’re really in to this.
We’ll do the podcast really soon and if you have any questions, please
don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

I may have asked this before, sorry if that's the case. Does anyone
happen to know where I could pick up a Philips retractable in the UK?
I'm totally diggin rail racer with the mouse, but think that an analog
stick to take the curves with might be even more instinctive for me
seeing as I grew up as a console gamer.

from the cd or internet in order for games to pick up on its force
feedback qualities.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-05 Thread Phil Vlasak
To get a similar effect using keys you would need to use something like the
whole numbers row.

1 would be speed 2
2 speed 4
3 speed 8
4 speed 16
5 speed 32
6 speed 64
7 speed 128
8 speed 256
9 speed 512
0 speed 1024
Just the number moves you forward
the number plus shift would move you left
the number plus control would move you right
the number plus shift and control would reverse your direction.
So 11 keys could do what one joystick or mouse could do.

Would minus 5,000 be moving backward at full speed, then? I can see the
advantages to joystick movement and action when you described it as you
did.

How about having to type -5000 to determine your movement during a fast
action game? (evil grin) In other words, "No way, Jose!"

Hi,
It isn't an issue of annalogue verses digital devices. it has to do with
how operating systems and programs recieve input from those devices.
Keyboards return a key pressed or key released state back to the
operating

system or program polling it. Since a key can only be held down or
released there isn't any other state the key can be in. This is different
from a joystick that has a wide range of motion and movements left,
right,
back, foward, or a combination of these. Obviously, since the joystick
has
such a wide degree of movement you can program much more complex tasks
for

it.
If you wanted a player to run using a keyboard pressing up arrow might
start him walking. Add a shift or control key and he breaks out into a
run. This works, but you don't get a lot of control over speed other than
a walk or a run because a key can only be pressed or released.
Now, on a joystick since the y axis has a range of -5000 to 5000 you can
speed up or slow down based on the y axis. If the axis is 0 the player is
stopped. If you push the stick foward or backward the closer you get
to -5000 or 5000 you can continue adding speed and momentum until the
player reaches the proper speed. This gives you a huge advantage over the
keyboard because you have a steady increase from standing still to an all
out run. Much smoother, realistic, and advance than the clunky keyboard
method.

[Audyssey] games and joysticks

2009-05-05 Thread shaun everiss
Hi all.
after a little bit of shuffling I have managed to find a place to store and
play my wingman force 3d stick.
However I really hope its worth it, when I started to play games like gtc and
sod just spun round.
and round.
however this time I have made sure the ffb stick will always centre.
Hopefully I can get a game or two, its just a basic stick and its probably
getting a bit old.
I will probably start with something like this since i have it then switch to
a rumble pad one day, however this was an old birthday present some years back
so I guess I'll try.
I have a throttle control back and foreward as well as left and right and left
right stick turn 6 buttons and a central button making 7 buttons.
we will see.
However if stuff I play just doesn't cut it or something I may just switch off
the stick.

Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Arcade Mode

Hello Listers,
I have a real quick question for some of you Mysteries of the Ancients
fans. Over the passed few days/weeks I have been involved in performing a
major upgrade of Mysteries of the Ancients. As the work I am doing is
largely experimental I don't want to say too much about the work as yet.
Although, I think if it pans out it will be a big step forward with the
game, and possably will resolve several issues with the game.
That said, here is the deal. I've been porting MOTA over to a newer
version of the Genesis Engine, and so far so good. Thing is since Genesis
is primarily for First Person style games I never put an arcade mode in
the main Genesis Engine. It was strictly an addition to the modified
engine for Mysteries of the Ancients. Obviously I can add an arcade mode
to the Genesis Engine, make it a standard feature, but I'm not sure if
that is necessary. So I am going to ask this question. When playing
Mysteries of the Ancients do you prefer arcade mode or standard mode when
playing?

Thanks.

Hi,
Yeah, Rail Racer supports racing wheels. While Rail Racer seams to be
fairly mouse oriented it works equally well with the wheel too. Having
seen that support in Rail Racer and Topspeed I'm rather interested to see
the new Mach 1.

Ryan Strunk wrote:

mouse user for Rail Racer, so I'm not sure if it works for that, too.

If they don't want to pay 20 dollars for a controller for a free game,
then

they don't have to play the free game. I might possibly understand them
getting mad if the game cost 50 dollars and they still had to buy that
controller, but come on. The game is free.

Besides which, we need to get with the times.

How about having to type -5000 to determine your movement during a fast

Hi,
It isn't an issue of annalogue verses digital devices. it has to do with
how operating systems and programs recieve input from those devices.
Keyboards return a key pressed or key released state back to the operating
system or program polling it. Since a key can only be held down or
released there isn't any other state the key can be in. This is different
from a joystick that has a wide range of motion and movements left, right,
back, foward, or a combination of these. Obviously, since the joystick has
such a wide degree of movement you can program much more complex tasks for
This gives you a huge advantage over the
keyboard because you have a steady increase from standing still to an all
out run. Much smoother, realistic, and advance than the clunky keyboard
method.

2009-05-05 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
Actually, unless you specifically program the secondary stick for game
pads such as the SGC-2909 the secondary stick will do nothing. However,
some game pads like the Logitec Rumble Pads have a speed slider on the
front of the unit that when slid left/right they act as a type of
throddle control. Seeing that every game pad and joystick is different I
can't see a way around not having some kind of built in profiler to
customize the controller to the end users liking.

Hi Jim,
Well, it is true that the Logitec Momo Racing Wheel costs a fair amount
of change but I know there are cheaper racing wheels out there. I've
seen a couple now and then under $50 so as long as those cheaper moddels
work, which I think they would, it is not really that big an investment
for some of us on the list.
Anyway, i think you are making the right decision for the game. It is
your game, and you should create it exactly how you like it. If others
don't like it, have a problem wih it, it is there problem. It is not as
though you have charged them money to play it, and therefore owe them
upgrades, extra features, or whatever might come with a commercial product.

Hi,
Yeah, Rail Racer supports racing wheels. While Rail Racer seams to be
fairly mouse oriented it works equally well with the wheel too. Having
seen that support in Rail Racer and Topspeed I'm rather interested to
see the new Mach 1.

Ryan Strunk wrote:

Why pay for the wheel? Because it will work for Mach 1, it does work for Top
Speed, and it's supposed to work for Raceway. Sorry Che but I've been a
mouse user for Rail Racer, so I'm not sure if it works for that, too.

If they don't want to pay 20 dollars for a controller for a free game, then
they don't have to play the free game. I might possibly understand them
getting mad if the game cost 50 dollars and they still had to buy that
controller, but come on. The game is free.

Besides which, we need to get with the times.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-05 Thread Kai

Greetings Jim.

I've made it fairly clear before, but I'll reiterate my opinion: I fully
support your decision to focus on a controller that will bring forth your
vision of how the game should be played. The keyboard is a fine staple for
input, but it is rarely the ideal medium for complex maneuvers in games and
other applications. Can you imagine a graphics specialist trying to draw an
F18 fighter jet with just the arrow keys? An animation artist trying to draw
a moving hand with the keyboard?

I applaud you for not caving in to slave over implementing a sub par input
device in your design of Mach 1. I think that product developers have every
right to put their foot down, make things as they wish, then see what
happens -- more so if the end product is free of charge! Rather than try to
please everyone, you should always design it to your vision, make it
something you yourself would enjoy playing, not some Joe Shmo who you'll
probably never meet. If Joe enjoys your game, then more's the better, but by
no means should Joe's satisfaction or lack thereof sway your vision.

Lookin' forward to the new release!

Ah, yeah. My controller has 2 shoulder buttons that are usually used as
break and gas. They're anilogue so I can push them a little or a lot, and
the vehicle would go faster and faster.

Hi Charles,

I'm sure that Mach 1 tts will work with any joystick as the code for
joysticks is all the same. I am thinking of the dual stick game
controller that has been discussed and am thinking about steering with one
stick and the other stick would be the gas and brake peddle. Guess that
would work out ok. The Logitech MOMO Racing controller has behind the
steering wheel two fins (buttons) that you can pull easily with your
finger tips while your hands are on the wheel. I have those set to
speedometer and track position. Then there are 6 buttons on the hub of
the steering wheel. I have them as lap, gear, time and horn. Two are
unused. Then to the right of the steering wheel is a gear shift knob. I
have it as pushing it forward is down shift and pulling it towards you is
to shift up a gear. So I still need to write all of the part where one
can select which button, stick etc will do what if you are not using the
Logitech MOMO Racing controller or just want to rearrange what does what

Actually, that's how I see Vip mud. Monkey term does things just as great
and I'm not paying a cent to play the muds themselves. This is a bit
different though, since you can use the controller/steering wheel for more
than just TTS.
The thing about the PS3 is the fact that your paying for the system itself
as well as games. So essentially you do have an option of playing.
With Jims games, though, the games are free. I think there should be
keyboard support for at least a few tracks - or how about mouse support? I
love rail racer for that.

Greetings List.

I can't afford the cost of the PS3, its peripherals, nor the games
themselves, so I'm not playing PS3 games. Same case would apply here, I
think. It's not exactly like *everyone* has to play a game. People who
can't afford Shades of Doom won't play it. It's effectively the same
situation.

Meanwhile, for those who can afford such peripherals for their computers,
concentrating on improved support for said peripherals will make the game
that much more enjoyable for them.

2009-05-05 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi,

Thank you all for your Mach 1 tts comments and suggestions. I know that the Logitech
MOMO Racing controller is not cheap. It costs like $100.00. I'm sure that allot of
people are not going to or can not spend that kind of money for a specific game
controller. I got half of it as a gift and paid for the other half. Then I learned
the VB6 joystick code. So I then wanted to write a game that used the steering wheel
and was as close to being like real driving as I could make it. So I am not going to
dumb down the game for the keyboard. I am sorry that the game will probably not be
as much fun with a non steering wheel controller and even less so with the keyboard,
but hey I could have written it and just kept it for myself.

Thanks again and BFN
