Re: [Audyssey] Winfrotz TTS

2010-11-05 Thread dark

Hi Neophyte.
i wasn't meaning that this was a specifically vi issue at all, just that it
is principely the reason I've stopped playing a lot of if these days, sinse
for every game I tried that I really liked, there seemed to be five or six
others where I ran into those sorts of problems.

This got particularly irritating with games like heroes which had a greeat
concept and very much grabbed my interest.

As to text gamebooks, I mean games based upon the style of the old gamebook
series of the 1980's and early 90's, things like fighting fantasy, lone wolf
and fabled lands.

These are similar to interactive fiction in that they provide a second
person narative, but rather than having a complex program and parza to
handle progression, they use a system of turning to various pages of text
(or with some of the online ones, clicking links), to make choices. Often,
they also feature an abilities and stats system similar to a tabletop rp
game and have turn based combat.

By limiting the choice of player actions, I find it far easier to
concentrate upon the story and world, rather than get stuck behind some over
complex puzle. Traditionally, series like Fighting fantasy have been
slightly pulp fantasy in genre, big swords and big explosions, however
with people now writing gamebooks online, there are some more subtle works
available and works in different genres.

Noteable sites include www.ffproject.orgg, a site which has many gamebooks
online, pluss an in built dice and character sheet system (so you don't need
to write your own).

www.arborell.com, The chronicles of arborell (actually very much a favourite
of mine), a site where an author is trying to do essentially what Tolkien
did, create a world with it's own history, culture and language. There are
several game books (including one very unusual one), pluss many background
novels, historical documents and the like.

www.project.aon.org, a site wwhich allows you to either download or play
online the lone wolf series of gamebooks from the 80's. These are unique in
that the 20 books in the series form episodes in an ongoing story, and you
keep your character and abilities from book to book adding more skills as
you progress and thus getting more choices about where the story goes.

There are several others kicking around, but these I think are probably the
main three, and the three I frequent most.

You can always search the database at www.audiogames.net for the gamebooks
catagory.

Hmm. I was thinking it would something as simple as only one variable.
  The

You can still find weapons and treasures whether the torch is lit or not,
but just have to do it differently. With the torch lit, you hear that
something is there, with it not utilized, you hear nothing. Wouldn't the
same apply with trap warnings? Or, I just thought of this, could trap
warnings be included in what you hear or do not hear, based on whether a
torch is being used or not? This would greatly emphasize the torch's
  value.

2010-11-05 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Actually there was no such thing as an accessible live action audio dos game
for us. All though David Greenwood and PCS Games tried and emulated it pretty
good, like with Cops and Robbers. The thing is, we had no Basic wave file
playing code. So to play a wave file we would use the Basic shell command to
use an external wave file player program. Of course though with this method
the game was totally suspended while the wave file was being played. But in
Windows with DirectX and sapi5 they have the ability to play a wave file and
speak in an asynchronous manner. So unlike the dos games the program can
continue and can do calculations, get keyboard or joystick input, play another
wave file, stop speech and start new speech etc. In dos none of that could
happen while the game was shelled out to play the wave file.

I could be wrong, but I believe that David created Shades of Doom before he
converted Lone Wolf to a windows version.

Hi Jim,
Actually, I think the first live action game for the blind would have
to be Lone Wolf. It was GMA's second title and it was real time based
rather than turn based. Lone Wolf 1.0 was for Dos, but eventually
David Greenwood rewrote it in VB 6 and then 2.0 and later were full
Windows releases. So Lone Wolf probably takes the credit since it was
out far longer than Shades of Doom. Although, Shades of Doom was
probably the first true First-Person game for the blind.

2010-11-05 Thread dark
Michael, if I understand correctly, you are looking for games which are
played on a grid and which you move only in 4 (or 8), directions
encountering things on that grid.

In theese terms, the games I can think of are:

X hour obviously, Galaxy ranger, Night of parasite, self destruct,
treasurehunt, egg hunt, super egg hunt, the great toy robbery, deakout,
super deakout, snake, the Klango game mole no more, the Pirate memory game,
dog and cat, (though that isn't available anymore), and to an extent the
maze games you've already tried (though not mortalmaze sinse that is more
3D.

This isn't really a helpful way of catagorizing games though, sinse it
covers everything from fast action arcade games, to puzles like dog and cat,
to memory tests, as well as some more complex action adventure games like X
hour, night of parasite and treasurehunt.

I suggest in choosing what games to play you think rather more about the
style of game you'd fancy trying, rather than what sort of interface it has.

For instance, if you enjoy adventure war games, gma tank commander might
well appeal to you, even though it's interface is 3D.

Hi. I really can't agree with you here. There is no true 3d audio
games as of yet. No wait, winPup and 3d velocity are true 3d games.
Some other games just have 3d sound. A 3d game means that you can
move in two planes (forward, back, left, right, up and down) and
anything in between. Tank commander only allows for forward/backward
and left/right.

2010-11-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Good point. Yes, I remember how difficult it was to play a sound under
Dos. In fact, I had the very same issue under Linux before they began
developing APIs like SDL, SFML, OpenGL, and OpenAL which provided
better means for handling input, audio, graphics, etc.
For example, I can remember around 1998 or 1999 when I was learning
C++ at Wright State I decided to write a few simple card and board
games for Linux. As you pointed out there was nothing like DirectX
available so I'd have to do something like
system (play shuffle.wav);
which basicly executed the Sox play shell command and told it which
wav file to play. It only allowed me to play one wav file at a time so
was only good for simple games like Blackjack, Poker, Uno, Monopoly,
or something like that. True real time action games weren't possible
on Linux until SDL and other APIs came along a few years later.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure David Greenwood ported lone Wolf to Windows
before Shades of Doom because I purchased Lone Wolf while Shades of
Doom was still in alpha. At that time Lone Wolf 2.0 was already out,
was rreleased, while Shades of Doom was still under development.
However, David Greenwood had talked about the idea of making a Doom
clone clear back as early as 99, but didn't get it done until around
late 2000 or maybe early 2001. Perhaps you are thinking of that?

Cheers!

I've recently found both games uninstallable as well, sinse Avg flags them

Also, irritatingly both games have to run under a version early version of

need to take care where you install these).

Despite being a basic memory game, i did actually think the pirate memory

[Audyssey] Game books

2010-11-05 Thread neophyte

Hey Dark,

Okay, now I'm totally geeking out. I ran down those links you sent through
and they were all very cool projects. I feel like I need a spare year to
start exploring them properly! I played Choose Your Own Adventure books
and Fighting Fantasy books heaps as a kid and have recently been buying
them when I come across them in op shops. (I think you call them thrift
shops.) These links have helped enormously, particularly with all of the
ideas that have been swirling around in my head.

I'm interested to know your more critical thoughts. What do you think many
of the game books do right? What do they do wrong? What's hard to make
work as a VI person? And, probably more interesting, what would you write
if you were to make one yourself?

I also stumbled onto the audiogames.net resource page while searching for
the categories section. What a find! Thanks again for all the links and
the explanations.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Hey Phil,

I can understand why you would suggest buying a voice! The links you gave
me had quite the variety of them. I was pretty stoked to find that Real
Speak has an Australian one called Karen, which isn't too bad!

The Ivona Amy voice is my favourite from the pages you've linked to. It's
amazing to hear the difference between the voice I've got in Winfrotz TTS
to a properly paced voice using a screen reader program. Do you know much
about the Ivona Bright Voice technology, or the NVDA screen reader they
offer?

Cheers,

Hi Neophyte,
If you are trying to play I F games using SAPI, you should try to get a
decent sounding voice.
The better ones need to be purchased and cost from $35 to $45 US per voice.
You can check out the demos at,
http://www.nextup.com
They carry the A T and T voices. I prefer the Crystal and Mike US English
voices.
I read a review that said that most sighted players who use voices like
Acapela Heather the best which Next up also sells.

A new company, IVONA Text To Speech, has some interesting voices,

Re: [Audyssey] Game books

2010-11-05 Thread dark

Hi neophyte.

To be honest as a visually impared person doesn't particularly apply here
if the books are accessible. Obviously I prefer them not to have graphics or
graphical puzles, and equally obviously it's good for me to get them online
rather than in an inaccessible print form (I've contacted the publishers of
the ff series sinse they seem to be producing versions for Iphone,
suggesting that they might sell accessible pc versions, but sadly I got no
response, and sinse I on't have an Iphone myself I can't say whether
gamebook projects released for it are accessible with th aple synth voice
over or not).

As a fan however, I do have thoughts.

my first, is that obviously good writing is manifestly helpful. I've seen
several sites which offer online creation of Cyoa type affairs, but all of
the ones I checked seemed to be written by a ten year old (and often a dirty
minded one at that).

So that's obviously the first concern (this is one thing i really love about
the Chronicles of arborell, the writing is superb).

Then there is probably the most often mentioned factor of gamebooks, random
death. A gamebook (such as house of horror on the ff project site), where
fairly inocuous choices can get your character killed and the only way
through is basic trial and error frequently leaves you with a sense of
unfairness.

I'm not saying random death shouldn't occur, only that it would be helpful
to have at least some hint in the text, or some method of saving yourself
via a stat roll or use of ability, not just woopse, didn't we tell you that
taking the right hand passage lead to a giant invisible crushing wrecking
ball of death!

getting on to abilities, obviously it is not possible to feature a hugely
long combat and stats system in a gamebook, however there should be things
you as a character can do to influence stats, rather than just be forced to
take whatever you roll at the beginning and live with it.

lone wolf for instance has the Kai skills systems (which has also been
mirrored in Arborell), where taking certain skills allows you to avoid
combats, for instance by using your archery skill to shoot the guards
from a distance, or using your hunting skill to head around the advancing
guard patrol.

Like wise, while it's not really possible to have a really complex and
interesting stats system in a gamebook, combats should at least have some
nice scriptions for winning or losing (the chronicles of arborell does this
very well).

i also dislike books which simply stick in statistically hard fights for the
sake of it which you as a player cannot alter.

While having a chance of death in battle is fine, being suddenly attacked by
something which is amazingly tougher than you and cannot physically be
killed due to the high stats against you (as indeed happened in some of the
lw books), is simply unfair.

I actually did have a plan for a gamebook, but I've yet to get to the point
of writing it, too many other things on hand unfortunately.

I hope you have fun with these.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Well, as a big Sendspace user with a Max account I can give you lots
of reasons why Dropbox is, well, not that good. For one thing with a
Sendspace Max account you can download up to 8 GB per day, can store
100 GB of files on your account, use of the Sendspace Wizard, etc.
Dropbox doesn't offerly nearly that much. Especially, for a free
account. I can't tell you how many times someone has posted a podcast

download limit has expired or the file is no longer available. The

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 16 Changes

2010-11-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,

Okay, but after this we really really need to get back on topic. This
is way off topic. Smile.

The name Bash is an achronim for Born Again Shell. Unlike Dos that has
a single user interface, a common shell environment you might say,
different brands of Unix like BSD, Solaris, Sco, etc all developed
their own shell environments independantly like the Born shell, Ash,
Corn shell, and a few others I can't remember. To make a long story
short when Linux came along the open source community decided to
create a free and open source shell environment similar to the Born
shell and called it the Born Again Shell or Bash for short. Over time
Bash pretty much became the open source and Unix standard, and is by
far the most popular shell environment on the market. Not only is it
the default for every Linux operating system out there Mac OSX uses
Bash as its shell environment too.

As for the term shell it means exactly that. A shell is simply a basic
input output system for the operating system that allows you to
interact with the OS by using simple instructions like cd to change
directory or del to delete a file. It is called a shell because it
provides a low-level shell that everything else including the
graphical user interface is built upon.

Even in an operating system like Windows 7 the Windows shell is still
there. It is just buried under so much graphical stuff the average
person doesn't know it is there. However, if you boot Windows and
bring up the Windos 7 boot menu you'll see an option to boot to
command prompt mode. This is basicly a new name for MS Dos mode. As
much as Microsoft tries to hide it the Windows shell is still there
and if you know how to get to it Windows XP, Windos Vista, and Windows
7 still have a low-level shell similar to MS Dos that everything is
just built on. Linux isn't that much different, but unlike Microsoft
they don't try to bury the shell under lots of graphical user
interfaces and act like it isn't there.

Cheers!

2010-11-05 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Hi Lori. I'm not sure what's happening here, but the procedure I use is:
Select and copy the file(s) I want to put in the public folder,
Go to the system tray and select drop box, then select the open drop box
item
Navigate through the resulting window to the public folder and paste.

If I've missed something you're doing that invalidates this suggestion let
me know and I'll do some more investigating.

Hi Hayden,

Well, as a big Sendspace user with a Max account I can give you lots
of reasons why Dropbox is, well, not that good. For one thing with a
Sendspace Max account you can download up to 8 GB per day, can store
100 GB of files on your account, use of the Sendspace Wizard, etc.
Dropbox doesn't offerly nearly that much. Especially, for a free
account. I can't tell you how many times someone has posted a podcast
or something to Dropbox, and when I go to download it Dropbox says the
download limit has expired or the file is no longer available. The
service is quite honestly terrible.

Hi. I really can't agree with you here. There is no true 3d audio
games as of yet. No wait, winPup and 3d velocity are true 3d games.
Some other games just have 3d sound. A 3d game means that you can
move in two planes (forward, back, left, right, up and down) and
anything in between. Tank commander only allows for forward/backward
and left/right.

Michael, if I understand correctly, you are looking for games which are

treasurehunt, egg hunt, super egg hunt, the great toy robbery, deakout,
super deakout, snake, the Klango game mole no more, the Pirate memory
game,
dog and cat, (though that isn't available anymore), and to an extent the
maze games you've already tried (though not mortalmaze sinse that is more
 3D.

This isn't really a helpful way of catagorizing games though, sinse it
covers everything from fast action arcade games, to puzles like dog and
cat,
to memory tests, as well as some more complex action adventure games like
X
hour, night of parasite and treasurehunt.

I suggest in choosing what games to play you think rather more about the
style of game you'd fancy trying, rather than what sort of interface it
has.

For instance, if you enjoy adventure war games, gma tank commander might
well appeal to you, even though it's interface is 3D.

Hmm. I was thinking it would something as simple as only one variable.
  The

warnings would either be on or off, just like I picture the torches to
  work.

You can still find weapons and treasures whether the torch is lit or
not,
but just have to do it differently. With the torch lit, you hear that
something is there, with it not utilized, you hear nothing. Wouldn't
the
same apply with trap warnings? Or, I just thought of this, could trap
warnings be included in what you hear or do not hear, based on whether

Agree with you on lonewolf. The issue isn't really in which directions

Hi. I really can't agree with you here. There is no true 3d audio
games as of yet. No wait, winPup and 3d velocity are true 3d games.
Some other games just have 3d sound. A 3d game means that you can
move in two planes (forward, back, left, right, up and down) and
anything in between. Tank commander only allows for forward/backward
 and left/right.

 On 11/5/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
Michael, if I understand correctly, you are looking for games which are

In theese terms, the games I can think of are:

treasurehunt, egg hunt, super egg hunt, the great toy robbery, deakout,
super deakout, snake, the Klango game mole no more, the Pirate memory
 game,
dog and cat, (though that isn't available anymore), and to an extent the
maze games you've already tried (though not mortalmaze sinse that is more

Hmm. I was thinking it would something as simple as only one
 variable.

 The

warnings would either be on or off, just like I picture the torches to
 work.

You can still find weapons and treasures whether the torch is lit or

not,

but just have to do it differently. With the torch lit, you hear that
something is there, with it not utilized, you hear nothing. Wouldn't

the

same apply with trap warnings? Or, I just thought of this, could trap
warnings be included in what you hear or do not hear, based on whether

a

torch is being used or not? This would greatly emphasize the torch's
 value.

Hi,

Another all-in-one email.

To Zachary.
Thanks. I'll add that little bit of information to my expanding text
document. Hopefully, soon, I'll work through everyone's advice and distill
it down into some good set ups that work well on particular platforms.

To Muhammed.
I'll do some research on the Braille note before I chat to you, so I can
get a better understanding. I believe it was talked about in the book I
recently finished, called Wake. It's by science fiction author Robert
Sawyer and features a blind girl as the protagonist.

To Shaun.
Sounds like you've got a great collection of old-school games there.
There's something about the really old floppy disks that were around in
the eighties and nineties that I still love. I wonder if, in thirty years
time, people will get all nostalgic over CDs. Grins.

To Dark.
Awesome. Thanks so much. That's given me a good understanding of some of
the features that are missing from Winfrotz TTS.

Your reply to Michael was great, too. Laughs. Don't worry. Pretty much all
of the frustrations you talk about with interactive fiction is there for
sighted players, as well. So many games have tripped me up just because I
couldn't get the right syntax or didn't understand the author's logic. In
my opinion, that's often largely the fault of the author.

In both replies you mentioned text based game books. What exactly are you
referring to there?

I've downloaded a copy of fallthru. Hopefully, on the weekend, I'll get to
play some of it. I played a bit more of the IF comp game Mite last night
using Winfrotz TTS. It was a little easier than the night before. I
imagine you get used to things and anticipate them, or cancel them with
the right keystroke.

As for a recommendation on what to play, it depends on the type of game
you like. I'm a big sucker for short interactive fiction games such as
Lost Pig, Escapade, Snack Time and so on.

To Michael.
Thanks for the welcome. No doubt me landing on Audyssey and then
proceeding to ask a million questions has caused a little intrigue.
There's a couple of reasons why I'm trying to learn so much. One of them
is so that I can help the community of sighted interactive fiction authors
understand how to write better games. Anything (and perhaps everything) I
learn here I hope to share with them at some point.

Thanks for the fantastic overview on Winfrotz. Some questions that popped
into my head include things like:

What if there were commands written into games that could let you review
your last turn, or list the known objects in a room?
What if there was a command that let you know the obvious exits? For
example, typing the word directions gave you an abbreviated list of the
exits.
Are there features like that which could be written into an Inform
extension that would help?

To Jim.
Thanks for the brief history lesson. I understand the revolutionary aspect
of audio games, but do you have more problems with system conflicts and
platform bugs as a result?

To Tom.
Once again, some awesome information there. Thanks! I really appreciate
it. I obviously need to do some research on Sapi and start listening to
the differences between screen readers to get a better understanding.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Re:Q9 version 1.2.

I certainly understand where you're coming from, but if the game's too
difficult, it gets to a point where your fastest reflexes won't help you
out

for long. Since Q9 is Philip's most recent game, let's use it as an
example. You set game to insane and start walking around. at some point
during the game a rhino, and about 5 other animals come galloping at you
at
full speed. what do we do in that situation? we can't kill them all
without
taking massive damage in the process, and since there's no way of dodging
we

can't attack them on mass, and hope to survive anyhow. so they all attack
at

once and we die within 10 seconds. In this situation you could say well
jump

away from them. We could do that, but what if there's a pit behind us?
Also
remember Q9 enemies follow you indefinitely once they see you so are we
just

gonna run all the way back to the beginning of the level, at which point
we'll be trapped regardless? . if we jump forward and over them somehow,
only thing that'll happen is we'll have another pile of enemies from that
side added to our current predicament all ganging up on us. I don't find a
difficulty like that fun or challenging, I find it extremely frustrating.
Console games have a balance between the easiest and hardest difficulties
that stays constant, and also within the realm of possibility to complete.
even games that are extremely difficult and almost impossible to beat have

a

multiplayer option, or a way to get health items, or some such feature
that'll spread, or lessen the burden of completing the game and that won't
lead to frustration for the player for the next 3 years. I think if
developers are going to put an extremely hard difficulty, they need to
test
it out or at least have a team that's good enough at the particular title
to

test it for them, and complete the game first to make 100% certain it's
doable. Don't just put it out there without the slightest clue whether
someone will ever be able to complete it. If I had the programming skills,

I

could make a game that has a difficulty setting with 350 creatures moving
at

55mph and all attacking simultaneously in 3d space, but I know no one will
ever complete such a game. and if no one can beat it and brag about it,
then

what would be the point? the clue's in the name guys. It's called game
difficulty setting, not game impossibility setting. or unbeatable game
setting.

Hi Dark,

thanks for the file, I hope it will work.

Do you have this old version of Klango as well? I don't have any setup

It would be great if you could send this as well, since the game will not
work with the new Klango.

Hi Hayden,

I'll have to check Gournet out. It should be simple to code into any game,
and it sounds like it would be vey helpful.

As for the Braille Note talk, perhaps I'm confusing it with the braille
output device she had. I remember her talking about a number of braille
devices. I'll have to check sometime.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Hi Noeophyet, There are, as a natter of fact, games written in zcode that
use the command exits for that information (see Gournet). As for
Wake...did they really? I missed the Braille Note talk. Although, owning
one I cansay theyare invaluable. Best Regards, Hayden

Re: [Audyssey] Game books

2010-11-05 Thread dark

Hi.

well they have their devotees, however sinse unlike interactive fiction you
often need to write your own character ststats etc, some people don't want
to put in the work (which is imho a shame).

There are actually people writing more ameter books, for instance the
chronicles of arborell runs a competition for one each year. I've always
considdered entering and in fact do have ideas, but thus far I've just been
too busy with work on my phd, games, doing stuff for audiogames.net, reading
a lot, all the things on stage I do and (when I have time to write), more
conventional forms of writing.

Hopefully at some stage I'll get the time to sit down and bring my idea
about, sinse I certainly do have one.

I agree on the death business, though some ameter books have done a good job
with this.

Trials of alabas toom on the ffproject site for instance, has a room near
the end called the pit of death which has you descending down various poles,
slides and ladders to the bottom of a large pit.

there are four or five 50 50 choices with an instant death at each. The
clever thing however is that throughout the first part of the book, if you
explore, you will find litle hints on which choice is dangerous and which
isn't. So for instance I recieved a hint about a box crashing to the ground,
so when presented with a choice betwene an elivator or a staircase in the
pit of death, I took the stairs.

And of course, even if you miss a hint, you are not doomed sinse you stil
have a chance of survival.

then, there is also saving, ie by noting down a certain section of the book
(or by noting the page if it's an html one). Though only supported by some
books this can be a way of avoiding instant death choices being quite as
dangerous, particularly in the longer, 500 or 1000 section books (windhammer
from the chronicles of arborell actually has rules to support this).

Beware the Grue!
