In edSharp - for example, there's a keystroke for it to tell you which indent level you're at, and if you turn on indent notification, it will tell you as you move line to line if indentation levels change. That's pretty much how it gets away without using braces, brackets, and all the other trappings of C/C++ by defining blocks of code based on indention and proper spacing. That said, once you learn how to properly format your code eventually it becomes second nature to you. I guess in that respect I'm fortunate that I learned to format code properly a long time ago, and have been doing it in Java, C++, Visual Basic, you name it for what seems like forever. After a while its so automatic to me that the fact Python absolutely requires me to indent this statement one or two tabs is nothing new. I think when it comes to Python programming NVDA has the upperhand because when you have it enabled NVDA will announce your tabbed indention as you write your code. It lets you hear how many times this or that line has been indented with the tab key so you can determine if you have indented it faar enough or not. Then, if you have access to a braille display that is even better because you can follow the formatting in braille. I don't have a braille display myself, but I've heard people who prefer programming with one for that very reason. Of course, Python is by no means the only option available here. Its merely the one I liked best. Perl is equally up to writing text adventures too, and it has a C style syntax for those people looking for a more C/C++ look and feel to the language. If indenting is an issue something like Perl might be a better substitute. Although, I haven't used Perl in so long I'm not even sure what game specific APIs and libraries are out there for Perl these days. :D Anyway, bottom line, there are quite a lot of scripting languages available Python, Perl, Ruby, Jython, TCL, etc. I'm sure if one isn't sutible there is probably another one that will suit. Its just that Python has pretty much become the adopted scripting language of choice among open source developers, and there is quite a bit of interest in creating games in Python these days. Since PyGame came out, which is a Python wrapper for SDL, there have been a number of free games for Linux produced in Python and PyGame. Python has in its own way become the Visual Basic of the open source world in large part because it was designed from the ground up to target new programmers with little to no experience. Plus SDL has always had a very simple design, that's why it is called Simple Direct Media Layer, and PyGame actually makes it even simpler. Its for reasons like that I've been turning more and more to Python for any kind of open source development I do. My game Star Trek: Final Conflict was initially written in C++, then was rewritten in C# .NET, and the new version has been written in Python. In part because I want it to run on Linux, but I must confess the fact it is simpler than either to
Re: [Audyssey] [brandon's list] interesting articles on fighting games.
Discussion is mostly two people. And I'm going to give my opinion, and I don't mean to sound elitist... but it may come off that way. First off, let me say that I think this comment after the second article is what sums up my opinion pretty much entirely. One person said, "In my day, we didn't have training modes. We put a quarter in at the arcade, got whooped by someone younger than us... and liked it." I don't really hold anythingthat mainstream gaming publishing sites says about fighting games, simply for the fact that most people spend barely enough time with the genre. I've watched gamespot videos of people who review fighting games and litterally have no idea what they're doing... I was watching a soul calibur v vid before it came out and the people were talking about how the meter was way too complicated, and then they turn around and say sf's meter is nice and simple. It's funny because they're the exact same thing. And these are the same people who spent three minutes going on about how one kick could ring you out. Well, duh... you have to strategize. Unfortunately, most gaming publishers learn enough about the game review them, and most of them probably never touch them again. I'm not saying all of them are like that, but all the videos I've sceen show it. Now to be fair, some of the ideas in the articles are interesting. I think training modes improvements aren't a bad idea, but quite honestly? The way they're doing it is asking the game to hold your hand all the way through. And the beauty of a fighting game is that you have to work to get good. You have to figure things out for yourself, experiment, talk to other people. The trials are there to get you started, but the real learning comes from fighting. It's the same thing in reality... you can learn the moves to any martial art or fighting style, but if you have no experience fighting whether on the street or competetively, then it won't apply regardless of how much you know. Sure we could use some basic tactics advice in fighting games, but not to the extent they're asking. At least, I don't think so... but that's just my opinion. Again, I don't mean to sound elitist, so sorry if I do. I just think that this is a sugar-coated way of saying, "Fighting games aren't easy enough to learn... and we don't want to research online and get trumped in the learning process. Can devs put modes in to teach us everything so we don't have to lose when we go online?" The best way to learn is by defeat. You lose, you learn what you did wrong and don't do it again. Virtua fighter 4 did have that sweet of training modes and instructions, yes, but honestly? Few games do that, because the devs can spend more time on the gameplay. Not to say virtua fighter 4 is not a deep or tough game, it is. It's just that not all fighting game developers feel the need to explain every single little detail when it's eventually going to wind up online anyway. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Laurel, Well, sad to say there really aren't that many free TTS voices out there. There are the Microsoft voices Sam, Mary, Mike, and now Anna, and then there is ESpeak. ESpeak is very robotic sounding, similar to Eloquence in that regard, but there are some higher quality voices for ESpeak you can install from the MBrola project. You can find the ESpeak downloads and information at http://espeak.sourceforge.net and you can google for the MBrola voices. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Python and Interactive Fiction
Hi Ryan, Yeah, I know. I was taught to format my source code along with my fellow programming students back in my college days, but the point of all that formatting is so someone sighted can read it. Which is why I said it was unfortunate. It comes down to an issue of intent and who the code is written for in the first place. Yes, were I writing something professional for a business, company, or a group of sighted programmers like myself I would certainly format everything so people can read it. However, if I'm punching out a quick and dirty script for myself, something I never intend to redistribute, then what's the sense in formatting it when I can not see it? Either way it doesn't really bother me much. I've been formatting code in various languages for a long time so the fact I have to properly format my code in Python isn't a big deal.I certainly don't have a problem doing it. Its just the issue it is not optional in Python where other languages aren't this anal about formatting. So let's not make a big deal out of an offhand comment. Cheers! Hi Dark, Yeah, its quite doable. A lot of screen readers have the option to announce the formatting of a document and speak the number of tabs proceeding a line of text. Okay, that's what I thought. Another question, is there a way of making a room private and then imputting in a password? In part because I want it to run on Linux, but I must confess the fact it is simpler than either to use and speeds up development time its preferable to the commercial programming languages. Re: [Audyssey] Anyone wants a Nintendo Wii?
Hey, Charles. Well as you might have read my message on the audio game thatwas made for the Wii, it is only workable for the European region and not any other region. The Wii has the Wii censor remote and nunchuck. I was just trying to make a little extra money. I have no use for the thing since it is not fully accessible to blind, not to knock anyone that is totally blind that plays. I was just doing a bid to see if I could earn more money. But if no one is interrested in the Wii then I'll run it on ebay. -- Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network. Like I said, he's probably selling it because that supposed game for the blind won't run on US systems. Re: [Audyssey] Python and Interactive Fiction
Agreed, however, in my work, I often want to work quickly and want to know exactly where I'm placing a statement or bit of code. If I need to go through fifteen or twenty or more spaces (every time I want to edit a line at its beginning) to make sure my cursor is right at the beginning of the correct line, it's really a pain, so fortunately XCode can be smart about indention and formatting so it's not something I need to worry about. Not sure if this is straying too far off topic for the list… -Probably best for the Dev list?… Now that this has come up, am curious if XCode will auto indent Python as it does with the C style languages. -Interesting… Smiles, Cara :) --- View my Online Portfolio at: http://www.onemodelplace.com/CaraQuinn Follow me on Twitter! https://twitter.com/ModelCara On Feb 14, 2012, at 8:01 PM, Ryan Strunk wrote: There is nothing unfortunate whatsoever about requiring indentation. Re: [Audyssey] Python and Interactive Fiction
Guess you don't look at code sites, because half of it is not formatted at all. Python is strict when it comes to formatting, one tab or space out of place and code won't run. A lot of languages are forgiving as long as you have the syntax right. that is also where you have the most garbage code, because no one cares about how it looks except company work. In part because I want it to run on Linux, but I must confess the fact it is simpler than either to use and speeds up development time its preferable to the commercial programming languages. Re: [Audyssey] Extant question.
Hi Michael. Nope. The tech demo is as far as things go, though last I heard from Sander they did have a lot of plans for the game, but were busy on another none access related project at the moment. he said when that was finished they could get around to making a more complete Extant game, hopefully this year. I will confess though michael I do find your question a little strange in that sinse Extant is! made by the webmasters of audiogames.net, it would be quite surprising if a new version of the game came out and there weren't any sort of news about it. Oh, and no, the web master of audiogames.net is certainly not me, --- I'm not nearly that clever at php scripting. I usually just refer to myself as admin which covers a multitude of sins, though thinking about it that is now literally true sinse I'm an administrator of the forum. We do also have some more site admins though now as well, which is an extremely good thing. Beware the grue!
