[Audyssey] mud connection problems
Hi, I've been creeping around the mud connector webiste and found a lot of games I'd like to try. So, I gathered the info from the site: line of each game page and entered them into the mush z client and waited for the connection to be established. I blieve iwas able to connect to 2 of them, out of 8. the rifts ones do not connect (from the Palladium category), the fallout one does not connect, and several of the shadow run ones do not connect or time out. The X-men flame of darkness one connects but I do not know how to create a character, and the alter awon one, of course, works (most likely because the code is upated regularly by Dennis Town and the server capacity is high. Re: [Audyssey] Storm8 games information
Hi tom. i totally agree on the story angle there tom, however in the case of vampires and warewolves it counts even more. The field has been so heavily worked over by fiction writers, (especially after twilight and other such popular series), that to be really interesting such a story has to have appealing characters and a different take on things. One example of this was the recent series being human from the Bbc, about a vampire, a warewolf and a ghost who shared a house together. What made that however was the fact that the characters were so well rounded. Vampires were basically represented as like basically a totally out of control gang of druggies who even their leaders found hard to control, indeed part of the point of the second series was that just after the main character killed off the head vamp of the area, he suddenly realized that all the arrangements they had with the police etc totally fell out. the vampire character himself was also not entirely a good guy either, since there were points he tried to give up feeding, points he tried to sell the idea to other vampires and other points that he totally lost it or was made to lose it by those around him, (since being human was as m uch about the people as it was about the paranormal). My point however is that that sort of level of character is just not possible in such a short game which just has a click hear to do mission type of setup, indeed even for sighted players the cutscenes only provide appealing photos, not any sort of story or choices. Hmmm, I'm now thinking of trying choiceofgames gamebook, choice of the vampire to see what that turns out like (though i believe that is somewhat influenced by anne rice given that you start off in 19th century neworleans). Same goes for fantasy rpgs though and to a greater or lesser extent pretty much any genre of game, if the backstory and exploration is missing all your left with is stat management and economics, which might be interesting on it's own to some people, but not to myself, at least not when it is just a question of doing the same thing over again rather than actually having some sort of reactive based system of actions to follow. Re: [Audyssey] Storm8 games information
On the matter of replayable, I agree that the system sryth has with grindable areas with many monsters but unique missions works. Core exiles is much the same given that there are specific! missions you can do for npcs, but also general cargo, courier or mining missions which are just like trips on the company pay roll, sort of the way a taxi driver might work for some specific private higher individuals sometimes, but can always go back to a big taxi company to get generall jobs. Another system I quite like is that in puppet nightmares, whereby the game has several very long episodes that that a good while toc omplete, but are repeatable oncedone, indeed this is quite a common system in games nowadays, the action/rpg game darksouls that my brother is a huge fan of has this sort of thing, where by you can finish the game completely after many hours of playing but restart with your levels and experience intact on a tougher difficulty (also setting yourself up for online play with other people). To be honest though I don't think it's really the case that storm8 thought that a specific prince would get captured by goblins again and again, rather they just set a mission with specific reward chances and a button and needed a cool fantasy name and photo to go with it. you might as well just call it mission 5 for all the practical good it actually does in the game, which is again probably why the storm8 games are so much mods of eachother just with differently named stuff and some mildly different numbers in their crunching. Hi lindsay. Just download the update program from the section on the nielsbauer site and run it. When it says directory to update files to, check that it has the correct one for where your smugglers5 game is installed (if not click the button and rouse to the directory), then just keep hitting next until your done. hth. Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 5.
Hi Lindsay. first you could go to the programs menue and look for the program group, (it's installed in a folder called nielsbauer games I believe). This is actually what I do all the time myself since I prefer running things from the start menue and leaving my desktop for important shortcuts that I want keys for. If this doesn't work, just find the smugglers5.exe file in the games directory and run it that way, though you should have to do this unless you've really lost all your shortcuts and the start menue as well. Re: [Audyssey] mud connection problems
Keith, The thing to remember is that most muds are hobby games at best, and most of them are only up for a few months before being shut down forever. My guess is that at least two thirds of the games on mud connector aren't up or available anymore, and of those only perhaps ten percent have reliable uptime and population. Unfortunately, you're just going to have to sort through the bad ones to find what you're looking for. I prefer Email lists like this one because I don't have to search topics and threads to find what I'm looking. This is why I stress the importance of subject lines. I get hundreds every day, so I read or delete based on that subject line. Example: I changed the subject line here because it more correctly tells what I'm talking about. Re: [Audyssey] Forums or Email - Moderator Important Message for the List
Hi Charles, Yes, if someone posted wherever they felt like on a forum posts would get quite lost. Fortunately, most forum users tend to be more orderly than list members when it comes to subject lines and topic content, and a big part of that could be because all posts are arranged by topic rather than responded to in a first come first received manner as is the case on list. The other advantage of forums I see is because all the posts of a particular thread are there you can see every post from the first one to the current one so you don't get a lot of extraneous crap. A moderator can move topics to a different room, or can delete certain posts if they stray too far off the topic at hand. Forums are by there very nature more orderly and organized than lists. Re: [Audyssey] Storm8 games information
Hi Dark, Well, not necessarily. You say due to Twilight and other such popular series that to be interesting a game about vampires and werewolves has to have appealing characters and a different take on things. While I can agree with that to a certain point I also know a lot of that stuff just isn't available to a blind gamer. If we were sighted we could buy a copy of Castlevania or Wolfenstine, and play it to our hearts content. When you are totally blind like me that's not so much of an option. If someone creates a blind friendly text adventure or roll playing game based on Castlevania or Wolfenstine that might be old hat to those who have had the opportunity to play those games, but is a completely new experience for the blind guy who is just experiencing it for the first time. Bottom line, while it is true that vampires and werewolves have been worked over by mainstream game developers and authors to the point it is difficult to come up with something new and original that still is beside the point that we are talking about a group of people who have to a large extent been deprived of access to those materials. I know, for example, you have played Super Castlevania. What if you never played it before and some V.I. game developer produced an accessible audio version. Would it be a new experience? Well, of course, it would be. Therefore I'm less concerned at this point of originality than making games available to the V.I. community that are a new experience for the majority of people who have been deprived of access to the originals. These Storm8 games have given me a bit of inspiration to write a text based game about vampires and at this point I really don't care if I borrow ideas from the Vampire Chronicals, Twilight, or any other popular series because I really haven't played many games about vampires and do not belong to a guild or similar RPG group. So for me it is all kind of new. Cheers! [Audyssey] Looking For Something New to Play
Hi all, Okay, I am looking at the Audiogames.net website for something new to play, something interesting, and correct me if I'm wrong but it seems the only accessible games that seem to be under active development and are being talked about these days are games for iOS. It seems the accessible PC games have just stopped or are rapidly being taken over by games for smart phones and tablets. The only PC games I can see that I haven't tried are the Japanese audio games like Bokura No Daibouken which I have no intentions of trying unless a fully English version is produced that doesn't require translation from Japanese to English. Otherwise I don't see much new I haven't tried. I can't go for iOS because I don't as yet own my own iPhone or IPad so that's an instant out, and the game has to run on Windows or Linux. So have any suggestions for me what to play? I don't want to play Swamp or Road To Rage because I am not really into player verses player games. I want something I can download and play solo. I've tried Jim's new Press Your Luck, and it was good for what it is, but I want something more with exploration, adventures, etc. I don't really see anything like that for the PC these days. I'm sure there is something out there be it a mud, web based RPG game, or an audio game that will suit but I just as yet don't know what to try. Hi Thomas, The only major game release I'm aware of in the past while has been The Inquisitor audio adventure. It has an iOS version along with PC and Mac and can be compared to old-style point-and-click adventures for the sighted, such as those from Sierra Online or Lucas Arts. Hi Michael. I completed the game on IS in the end and haven't played through the game using the new update, however, however you need to keep examining the corpse and once you've completed your examination, you should be able to proceed to the square. Re: [Audyssey] Looking For Something New to Play
Yeah it looks that way, a lot of the big blind gamer companies well not all of them obviously but a lot of them are either concentrating on the msmartphone markets or simply not releasing anything pc related. The ag forums team of opensourcers and hackers did keep things going but thats stopped to. Most stuff is for android or the i devices mostly the latter. This was part of my rants a bit ago, it feels like just about everything has died or stopped for an extended length of time. I can't name who has stopped but as a whole its stopped. Its just possible that with the rise in access especially for the ios devices the blind community is seriously having second thoughts about where to go. Right now myself, the next revolution in gaming for the pc needs to be the touch screen and in particularly even though this will probably disadvantage a large percentage of the community at large for some time the windows8 system. A lot of stores are pulling out of pc gaming in general for cds at any rate. Mostly because the games now are all cloud based web games or simply using things like steam, etc. I think the market is switching from a lot of standalone games to multiplayer games of large size. I still like the pc games but that market is getting smaller and smaller as pcs well focus is shifted to handheld devices. I'm not suggesting that the pc game market is totally dead and I don't think it is the end of gaming for the blind or gaming for pcs in general but its quiet out there. Even when I go online these days bar the occational security update, virus or hacker attack on the network or news article the net is slowed right down for me at any rate. I can't explain it but thats what it is. Re: [Audyssey] Forums or Email - Moderator Important Message fortheList
Hi Tom. Well I agree keeping topics in correct rooms is a moderator's responsability and one job I do on audiogames.net, however there is another side to things. I have seen forums where any post that a certain mod considders to not match the subject gets utterly crucified, or gets their posts deleted, which just makes for an unfriendly atmosphere. To take one example, in a brouser game I played recently, I couldn't find any in game help at all, so i posted a general introduction on the forum, said who I was etc, and asked if anyone could please tell me where the in game help was which, for an intro message I didn't see as unreasonable at all. however I instantly get three members, including the admin jumping down my throat for daning to ask a game help question in the intro forum, needless to say that is not a forum i visit anymore :D. People can be real nazis about those sorts of things I find. The rule I use with audiogames.net, is that so long as there is a continuous discussion thread from one message to the next in a topic, it's fine, even if this means discussion changes slightly. So for instance, we might be discussing swamp, which leads on a general discussion about fps games and discussions of the relative merrits of shades of doom. This is fine, even if the topi subject were still about swamp, since afterall everyone can read the continuous discussion and understand why! we're suddenly talking about shades of doom. if however someone jumped into the thread and asked about something entirely different, like how to run Jim kitchin's games for instance, then! it would be off topic posting and I'd likely post a mod warning. of course, if it did! spark another thought that was completely unrelated, say someone got to thinking about comparing ideas for in game monsters, they'd likely post another topic and refer back to the old one as you describe rather than derailing the thread completely with a tangent. that system seems to work very well for audiogames.net, and is imho the right balance betwene order and free discussion. Re: [Audyssey] Storm8 games information
Hi Tom. while I see your point on originality being less of a concern due to access, I'm afraid I do not necessarily agree, not when we're talking about text adventures and rpgs, as opposed to action type games like super castlevania, since experiencing even a very generic spooky castle dracula with all the sterriotypical opening cofins, creaky stairs, shambling ghoul butlers etc would be quite a different ethos to having a fully fleshed out game with background and character, considder for example the difference betwene playing the esp pinball classic haunted house table with all it's sounds, evil organ music etc, and just reading a very generic description of a creapy old ruined house. I'll also add that for me, super castlevania only really became interesting in it's environments later on in the game, when i reached places like the swirling room in the clockwork mantion or draculas treasury, the first few levels in the generic castle area and the standard forest I didn't find half as interesting in terms of their background and setting. Getting back to text games though, to take one example, The choiceofgames choice of the vampire has clearly been enspired by anne rice first book, since your vampire starts off on a plantation in late 19th century neworleans. now, if I were to write a vampire text adventure game with the same historical setting, it would be far less interesting since we have seen what vampires are like there and have even played as one. Likewise there are so many interactive fiction games, eamon rpgs, gamebooks etc that are either directly set in castle dracula in transilvania or in a very similar system, isolated community of fearful peasants ruled over by vampire lord living in his giant medieval castle, that it would not be a new setting to explore, indeed if you look through the list of Eamon adventures there are so many with this form it's quite unbelieveable. of course, good writing or game design can always make a generic setting worth trying anyway, but even so, I'd myself much prefer a game with a slightly different ethos. To take one example, one thing i've not yet seen is a vampire game set on an estate in a time of termoil. Suppose for example, I wrote a game set in 18th century England at the time of the battle of colludan, in which England was at war with Scotland regarding King James the sixth being king of both countries. You could have the vampire as in fact a leader of a Scotish clan which was comparatively undiscovered, but which has come betwene the encampments of both an English and Scotish regiment. The vampire of course, wants both sides to get lost and leave him alone and to not be discovered, since both the English and Scotish church would agree on his extermination, so therefore starts reanimating corpses on both sides to fight against each other, in an effort to wipe out both regiments so that no news gets back to either London or edinborough. So, in the game you could either play an english or scotish soldier, (the english being better armed but the scotish having better starting stats). Part of the game would be fighting the enemy army, then the vampire's plans would be discovered, and the second part of the game would involve the two forces combining to fight off the undead, before storming the manner house of the vampire himself. The game would therefore be set mainly in rugged country sides, battling with 18th century weaponry against both humans, and the undead and whatever the vamp could throw. I'm not actually suggesting you take on this idea in itselff, 9since obviously it depends upon historical knolidge), but merely pointing out that by just tweaking the time and plot of even a standard vampire story, you can wind up with something with a lot more dimention to play. I will freely admit however, that as a general theme I'm a little sick of vampires at the moment, everyone going nuts over what is essentially a human mosquito, especially with all the romantic rubbish (I wonder how romantic a leach is). Then there is the constant winging and wining about vampires having to kill people to survive! for goodness sake grow up! :D. this isn't to say i won't play anything with a vampire in it or give something with a vamp a try, it's just that as a general concetp I'm getting pretty sick of them in their standard form, and to interest me as an idea in a story, interactive or otherwise, there needs to be a little more, or at the least, some darn good writing! Of course as I said, this is totally different from the question of an audio game, since there you have the action, atmosphere and sound, not to mention exploration to considder over and above the general theme, heck I'm not crazy about modern war stories, but I do very much enjoy games like Zero site, gma tank commander and lone wolf purely as games and experiences. So, feel free to come up with an
Re: [Audyssey] Forums or Email - Moderator Important Message fortheList
Hi Dark, Being able to go back and review prior posts is definitely an advantage of forums, and is one reason we archive messages for the mailing list. Anyone who wants to go back and see how a certain topic got started can. Although the method of checking the list archives isn't as straight forward as a forum and that is where a forum does have a slight advantage. However, I have seen a few mods of forums who are absolute dictators, as you describe, and they go too far with moderation. I realize the desire to keep everything organized and orderly, which is something I readily agree with, but when the mod in question flips out and crucifies a new member for posting a topic in the wrong room he or she has a serious control problem. :D To steer things back to the original topic at hand though since a person can not just easily pull up an entire topic and read it through it is a good idea if emails are properly identified with a subject line that reflects the topic being discussed so later readers can find information on what they are hunting for. :D Cheers! On 3/20/13, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. Then again, something like that would of course not! work on a mailing list, since obviously past messages are not visible thus the flow of discussion is less obvious to anyone joining the thread later. Re: [Audyssey] Looking For Something New to Play
Hi Tom. since smugglers 5, the main releases we've had for pc have tended to be smaller games like Jim's and the BG ones, however there are some I wonder if you've played as yet, several of which have had new updates. Firstly, kerkerkruip had a new version quite recently, just before christmas, if you don't know kerkerkruip, see the audiogames.net db, but it's a full on solo dungeon rpg written in glulx format, and is highly worth a try, especially for it's incredibly detailed combat. Another game that has recently had an update is Kirt wolf shrine of the lynx. This is an audio adventure game, but one with full 3D graphics. it has animal protagonists similar to carsh bandicoot etc, and a cutesy spy atmosphere, but it is a ful game where you can walk in all 360 degrees, jump gaps, and do stealth missions. For more info see the db. then, a brouser game I've been playing a lot recently is puppet nightmares. This is an anime style game, with probably the most complex rpg battles I've ever seen. It somewhat resembles pokemon in that you collect and train soul puppets, but it's story and ethos are set around a game played by children in a small german town taught by a mystical mage called the toy maker, and your quest to find your missing brother. Pvp is entirely option, and the game even has a solo story. It lacks battle descriptions, but the characters, itesm etc have text, and the battles are very complex and reactive. hth. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi tom. Yes, i know about the list archives, but they do take more time searching than just reading up the page, in fact I will admit the only time I've searched the audeasy list archives was when looking or a specific peace of info like a link or a solution to a problem, not just if someone starts a thread and I missed the beginning of it. on the plus side however, responding to multiple threads or keeping many conversations going is much easier on a mailing list since you just respond to when replies come in,w here as on a forum you have to sepcificaly go and check each thread you might wish to read or reply to. Re: [Audyssey] Looking For Something New to Play
Hi Shaun, You may be right. I guess I'm just surprised with the availability of tools like BGT its now easier than ever to develop audio games for Windows quickly, easily, and within a person's low income budget and game releases for PC seem to be dropping off instead of increasing. For a while there, perhaps last year, there were a number of freebies written in BGT that were released. They weren't award winning games by any means, but they were something to download and play. I had hoped some of those up and coming developers would release something else by now, but a lot of them released one or two simple freebies and disappeared. Some of them like Battle Zone was showing promise, and I haven't heard anything new on that project for a while. It seems to me that a lot of people are buying iPhones or iPads, and there are a wealth of games there that has redirected focus to the smart phone and tablet market. Eventually, I myself will be buying one when I have the money, but as someone who has just a regular cell phone I don't have instant access to all the new cool games. I have been able to borrow my in-laws iPhone to get a feel for the device and played a few games on it, but since its not mine I don't have access to it 24/7. However, because of the up serge in interest in such devices I'm wondering if USA Games might be better off investing in the tools to write games for iOS and get out of the PC business while the iron is still hot. :D However, even though I sound a bit dire I do think it is just a trend. There is a certain logic in having games on an iPhone and that is a matter of convenience. If someone is riding a train, sitting outside waiting for a class to start, taking a lunch break, he or she can just take out there iPhone and play Lost Cities or something while they wait. You can't do that with a PC unless you have a Netbook or something like that along. Even then an iPhone is probably handier. There is still a market for PC games given that an average desktop or laptop has more CPU power, can handle graphics better, has a larger screen, and of course may have better audio as well. Those kinds of features will most likely encourage developers to produce better games for Windows while they continue to develop simpler games like the Storm8 games for iOS. Cheers! On 3/20/13, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: Yeah it looks that way, a lot of the big blind gamer companies well not all of them obviously but a lot of them are either concentrating on the msmartphone markets or simply not releasing anything pc related. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] demos or not - Re: Looking For Something New to Play
Hi Charles, Perhaps yes perhaps no. I haven't decided to buy the game or not, and the main reason simply comes down to the state of my bank account. At this time of the month my cash is getting low and I tend to watch what I spend more than I would if my bank account was full. In the case of this game 19 Euros isn't really a big deal, and I would probably risk it if I had it to spend. If it were the end of the month, there were no more bills going out, and I had say $300 for spending cash I might risk a few bucks on a game demo or no demo. However, when my bank account is less than $150 and more than a week left before my next check comes I'm not going to buy something unless I am darn sure I will enjoy it. So in summary I will pay a small fee for a game if there is no demo if I have it to risk, but if I don't have it to just throw away I would prefer a demo to see what I'm buying in advance. Of course, if I don't have the cash to spend in either case then the game won't get purchased demo or no demo. :D On 3/20/13, Charles Rivard wee1s...@fidnet.com wrote: Ah. Re: [Audyssey] Looking For Something New to Play
Hi Tom, God forbid that the audio dependant has to be shuffled into the iPhone as a game platform. Honestly, while I love the iPhone for what it does, I really haven't enjoyed anything in the game department that I thought I had to really have when it came to the IOS apps. Give me a PC any day of the week. Does this mean your wrestling game is hanging on this particular decision? As for new games, there is Tactical Battles and that shadowgate adventure and they are free...I got to check out what Dark mentioned too. Let me rephrase what I said earlier. I know IOS is probably the latest fad, but I am hoping a developer could do both, and not drop the one for the other.
