Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey format discussion -Re: Audyssey MagazineNowOnline
I aggree. html and text were the formats the mag was in anyway. content wise I don't know. most of the info I would usually get from something is already on audiogames.net and this list. unless ofcause it never came there but to restrict things just for 1 mag seems a bit harsh and anyway with the net as it is we would never be able to stop the flow till mag release anyway. So the structure would have to change, a fact I have no idea of. At 09:11 AM 4/14/2013, you wrote: I'm thinking that they should all be in the same format. Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey format discussion -Re: Audyssey MagazineNow Online
it was just an idea. I actually give a feck what format the mag continues in. text html podcast whatever. as long as it actually behaves like a mag. Right now most of it is just coppied off the list and developers news briefs most of which are usually out of date unless the devs have not released them. Sadly because of the net our magazine is about as good as a crappy dialup connection. in a lot of cases bar the articles and some places like the dnd site which I don't visit as often as I should most of the info is in our hands and out of date when the mag is released. the mag is then quite small. but then maybe my expectations are quite high. the industry has changed from its fast roling pace to a trickle almost stopping at least on the user level in places. sometimes there is nothing but the swamps sometimes the treasure comes in nuggets and dubloons. But I don't know. I am happy that there are those that want to continue the mag. Right now the mag may as well be dead and gone the shape its in. And I am sure it would be easier to call it quits. though I am not discouraging the fact that there is still a push to keep this thing going. I have often wandered what will happen if the mag ever went. oh we would survive for a time. the old guard, but without anyone replacements the zombies would come and then well. I have noticed this somewhat on swamp. after my system refused to play swamp I got on a few campaigns on another box and found I just didn't enjoy it as much as I used to when it was in active status. I have noticed that postings to forum has dropped some to. I wander how long things will go on till the game is lost in the forum swamp or the page past page 1 of the forum whenever it goes. Once topics drop to what I like to call the crap pile since its not right in front of me simular to the back pages of the newspaper which I don't read they are basically lost and I find that sad in a way. I used to remember the time when we were a strong force. We were shooting leaves up to the sky and even with a few small wars we survived. To be honest though I never though that it would come to a possible end sertainly stagnation was not my idea of an end. its probably just me and I sertainly am not bailing out but so little news comes out compaired from before. I think if we are to continue I think we should go foreward and try to update the mag and try and restore the adventure the mag was. in the old days you never knew what you were going to find. The only way I can see this happening is to get the mag on a even schedual then somehow withhold news and stuff till the mag is out. or simply have a smaller mag I am just not sure. I think of something and my mind thinks about the old days. we have most of the mag in bits before it even comes. Like you I feel a magazine should be read and not listened to. Besides that it would get pretty darn expensive paying for extra hard drive space and bandwidth for a podcast compared to the price of a few MB to store the magazine. Re: [Audyssey] I'm sad: Chillingham.
Well as long as I have a machine that works or that can have xp I won't be going up and if I do it will be 7 that I go to not 8. Ofcause once xp stopps hardware manufacturers stop. so no drivers for any new stuf. Now right now thats probably not to bad, even if they stop next year that does mean a lot of new stuff up to i7 etc will still have minimal drivers for xp probably. but don't hold your life on it. my realtech card has not been updated since last year in june and sure enough my toshiba laptops I am looking at now don't use realtech cards and mostly intel ones. So chances are if you want a system that was released up to june 2012 you will have realtech cards after that well. It was the reason I moved from 98 among other things. Well networking was the other thing. At 01:14 AM 4/14/2013, you wrote: Hi Shaun, Well, while it is true Microsoft will discontinue updates and support for XP next year I somehow think it won't go away immediately. Remember a lot of blind users refuse to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8, and plan to stick with XP as long as possible. As a result even though XP won't be an issue for Microsoft personally a lot of developers like myself still may have to support the platform in order to keep from losing sales by cutting those users off. There is always a few years grace period between when a OS gets dropped and when the majority of users actually get around to buying new computers with an updated OS on it. Take Win 98 for example. When I was developing STFC I got requests clear up to 2006 to support Windows 98 even though the OS was 8 years old, and was basically about to be dropped by Microsoft. I had to point out to those users that because I was developing using .NET that newer versions of .NET such as 3.0 and 3.5 would not run on Windows 98 and in order to support the platform I had to in effect go back to using older releases of the .NET Framework which would not be in my best interests just to support an out dated platform. The point being is either because of lack of money or simple desire not to change the V.I. community seems to be behind the mainstream market, and don't upgrade as quickly even if it would be in their best interests to do so. As a result even though XP might be dropped next year I don't count on the fact the majority of V.I. users will run out and buy new desktops and laptops with Win 8 on them. Eventually maybe, but it will take a year or two before that happens. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
well there are many ways you can handle licences. with dolphin stuff you can put as many as you want. you start with 3 licences but you need to wait every 6 month for either your keys to reset or a licence to generate so yeah you will always have coppies but you just have to wait. the bsc one is the same 4 keys, wait a year and then another 4 keys. fs has a simuolar one though they need to reset manually and will actually investigate if you go to far. dvd audio extracter has 1 licence configured to 1 machine but you can move this round and as long as you have 1 unit licenced with a licence file though I have not tried it in theory you could continously move it round or buy another licence whic would actually stay online. On the ms front I aggree with. in theory as long as you are carefull you can use your key more than once but just don't use the same key on millions of boxes. There are loads of ways to handle it. There are sinble key registrations then there is the obvious demo and full game seperated different expiring downloads or just on cd. ok it would still get distributed but hmmm. Most of my software though is freeware or opensource. I have several comercial programs, windows an old version of office, my games, but the rest is free or opensourced with a couple acceptions but thats mainly because I have not found legal programs to replace them with or had the cash to buy them yet which I will eventually do. At 12:04 AM 4/14/2013, you wrote: Hi Shaun, I know the feeling. I wasn't a big Rail Racer fan, but I did beta test it and had a license for the game that won't work on any of my newer machines. Not only that I felt Che was being too strict with his licensing policy so that if I wanted a copy for my desktop and a copy for my laptop I'd have to obtain a second license. That kind of turned me off the game right there. I don't know. I think if I were to pay for an upgrade I'd also expect that some of the licensing restrictions be lifted. I'd want to be able to have a copy for at least one of my laptops as well as a key for my desktop. If I can't do that then I'll probably say forget it. I don't go for a lot of commercial software that won't allow me to put it on more than one PC at a time. That is in fact why I have turned to Linux for a lot of my software these days. well personally I think that a group of us should do the mag, and have it shared in such a way that if things go pairshape, then the mag can be done on a regular schedual. not sure how it would work. my issue is at the moment the mag has no schedual at all. Its not the fault of anyone but the mag design and schedual was never changed since 1995 when it came out first. it worked for ages and ages and now no one saw the issue that some day with the net and well life and other junk that we would get to a point where it would not be on schedual. I think it came out 4 times a year. then 2 and then every couple months. then it was once every year. now I am no longer sure what the schedual really is going. The only other thing that can be done is have articles for sections and simply terf the mag but I don't want that to happen. [Audyssey] old handheld games
Hi, While I was growing up, I enjoyed playing self-contained handheld games. I had a wide variety of these games, but over the years for one reason or another, they have disappeared. I'm wondering if anyone can help me track some or of them down. There's a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one that was very blind friendly and it actually talked. I can't remember if there was a sub-title or anything for this particular game. Another one is Spiderman, where the hero battles these huge mechanized spiders created by one of his enemies. At the end of each stage, the three spiders would stack up and face Spidy as a combined tripple-threat. Sorry if this is off-topic, but I figured because this was a gaming list I would give it a shot. Replies can be sent directly to me if necessary. Thanks. PS: the above games are just two I am looking for, but if anyone can direct me to a place that has these types of games then feel free. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Python Games On the Mac?
Hi, guys, Thanks for the help. Yes, the instructions in the readme file were specific about dependencies and versions and such. I'm sure I followed them, but I'll double-check. There were a couple of versions of dependencies that I couldn't find in the given links, so I googled them. This is probably where the hitch came in. Re: [Audyssey] Python Games On the Mac?
Hi Teresa, Python applications are Python version specific. For example, if you have a program that requires Python 2.7 then you must install Python 2.7 and not any other version to run that application. Running a version of Python too old or too new will likely end up not working. Also you must install any third-party dependencies that the game needs. If you need Pygame 1.9 for Python 2.7 then regardless if you have Python install the game will still not run because not all the dependencies are met. Hope this makes sense. So if you want to run certain games first read its system requirements, find out what version of Python it needs, what game libraries it needs and then we can help you get it running on Mac. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Python Games On the Mac?
Are you sure you're running python 1.4? Most widely adopted/largely in use version of python nowadays is 2.7 as far as I know - but/and, that' s what I work on/run on my windows PC, and when recently tested/tried out something on a ubuntu/linux machine it seemed to be running version 2.5. Either way, just asking since would guess that that might be an issue if python 1.4 is a bit out of date/old? Unless, I'm just mistaken, and that version number has something specific to do with it's implementation on a mac machine..? Could otherwise, also try out one of those .pyc files for you if you like, and see if they operate on this windows machine, running python 2.7, since also have pyGame installed here, etc., but anyway..? Re: [Audyssey] swamp complete weapons guide finally updated
Thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I've been thinking about updating it since the group of smgs came out (probably 2-3 weeks ago), and I've been looking at the various weapons as they appeared. It's handy to have the custom maps and campaign scripting; the only special weapon I've actually found on multiplayer was the m-1928. The actual html and cross-referencing that came with it really only took three or four days, with a lot of it getting done earlier today. - Original Message - From: ryan chou Subject: Re: [Audyssey] swamp complete weapons guide finally updated wow, this is pretty good! nice job just out of curiosity how long did it take you to get all the weapons, test them and type in the information? lol on the m240 thing, I have to agree with the damage rumor but it also seems to be a bit louder or that could just be me, who knows On 4/13/13, john wrote: I've finally completed the new weapons guide for version 2.9. Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey format discussion -Re: Audyssey Magazine Now Online
Hi Dennis, Good point. Wikipedia and a number of encyclopedia type sites like it will not accept quotes or references from podcasts which could be counter productive if we want to write an article on Wikipedia about audio games, accessible games, or refer someone like Popular Mechanics to back issues of the magazine for research. Its easier to research audio games if it is written down than it is to download dozens of podcasts and listen to them. Cheers! [Audyssey] Fifty Shades of Dark.
Games we'd like to play. Fifty Shades of Dark. Allison visits Dark at his company's headquarters where she finds him working out his patented fifty shades of blindness that had earned him a PHD and eventually a fortune. It was like a handicap in bowling in which your light perception could be plotted on a scale where 0 was total blindness and 50 was total sight. Then when buying an appliance or playing a game, all the person had to do was type in their Dark number and the game or device would instantly be adjusted to their specific visual needs. As she entered his office, she tripped on a wire strung along the door frame and fell on her face. Dark was standing behind his desk looking out the window observing the comings and goings of the people far down below. At the sound of her scream, Dark swung around and smiled. He was an impressive figure, two meters tall dressed in black, with his left arm in a sling because of a recent dueling wound. "I see you don't understand the protocol of addressing me. You must bow to the great and hugely entertaining dark, before entering my office. Only then will the trip wire be withdrawn. Allison spoke, "I was told your are the top authority on blind games and the most informative source on the subject in the world. Dark nodded, "Yes that is true my dear. Now what would you like to ask me?" "There has been a rumor that you received your wounded left wrist not from a fencing battle but from playing too much Swamp. Is this not true? Dark frowned, saying, "Drat you have me there woman. I have a bad case of mouse wrist syndrome. But pleas do not mention it to my adoring fans. They all think I am indestructible." She raised her pen int he air and said, I have only one more question for you and the whole destiny of the world hangs on your answer." Hi Tony, Thats something we have been seriously considering. Re: [Audyssey] Corporate VS IndependentDeveloperswasModeratorMessage
Hi Dark, Well, its definitely not beyond reason to create a true 2d side-scroller in audio. Its more than possible provided that the developer uses the correct API and tools which is kind of the catch 22 from a developmental aspect. What I mean by that is in Microsoft DirectSound you can modify the stereo pan and volume on sounds which generally lends itself to being very accessible to a blind gamer and it works with no special hardware to get the most out of it. Unfortunately, DirectSound is now deprecated , and only provided on Win 7 and Win 8 for backwards compatibility with Windows XP, and even there DirectSound doesn't work correctly on modern versions of Windows. So we have to hunt for a different sound library for games. First, we have Microsoft XAudio2. Aside for a few bugs it is a very nice library, but it has no simple 2d stereo pan controls. Believing that everyone wants 5.1 surround sound if you want to pan a sound in XAudio2 said developer basically has to write a custom wrapper over top of the 5.1 surround sound audio and fake a 2d stereo pan which isn't quite as good as the one in DirectSound. So clearly XAudio2 isn't for everyone thinking of 2d games unless they want to have 3d audio in a otherwise 2d game. Second, the OpenAL audio library has just about everything an audio game developer could want such as custom DSP effects, virtual 3d audio, pitch adjustments, etc but it does not have a simple 2d stereo pan control. Again if a developer wants one it has to essentially be bolted on top of the existing 5.1 surround sound controls which is overkill, and I've tried doing this and because it uses logarithmic roll-off instead of linier roll-off the panning sounds weird to people use to DirectSound. So while a good option not the best choice for 2d games. Finally, the last completely free option is SDL Mixer. Compared to the other two options it is not as good, generally speaking, but it does have 2d stereo panning. In fact it has the easiest pan control of any API I know of. However, the panning isn't as accurate sounding as DirectSound, is either left or right, meaning you can't really make it sound closer or further away so it works but doesn't work here. In short, we just looked at three alternatives for DirectSound, and can't really get what we need. they either go all the way for virtual 3d and 5.1 surround sound, or have a generic pan control so generic that it really isn't well suited to audio games. At least, not as accurate as we are use too. I'm not really sure what the answer is, but it is something of a problem for me as I have a 2d game in development, and I need to find an alternative to DirectSound in order to handle the audio. Using DirectSound is merely a temporary measure, and won't really work beyond Windows 8 anyway. So looking ahead I want to find something that will make it easier for me to develop 2d games and yet still be up to date. Cheers! One other problem with podcasts is that they're not considered 'real' by sites like wikipedia, wheras if it's written down and has an editor that checks articles, it can be used as a reference. I don't know that it's that important, but giving the magazine legitimacy like that may help get it out to more people. Hi Alisan. I actually know sryth very well. Back in 2004 when it was just a free game, before there was any commercial signup I was very much a fan and played endlessly, I was even 2nd on the leaderboards for a couple of years, but in 2009 I pretty much abandoned I pretty much abandoned sryth for exactly the reason you mention, it just seemed the gm was bumping up difficulty unreasonably and requiring massive donationsto perchice the higher level weapons to complete standard adventures, not to mention all the lotteries, timed events, stat grinding etc, it frankly seemed the gm just got reedy to me and his writing suffered. There are lots of online games kicking around, for more details see the games to play online page over at www.whitestick.co.uk. Many games however get a bit grindy aand are lacking in the text or have very quick battles. In particular I'd advise trying puppet nightmares, which has a fantastic battle system and a very interesting story, plus you control and take charge of pokemon like weerd surreal creatures making it also a creature game, and core exiles, a fantastic and very different story driven space adventure. That one has many stratogy elements, but also lots of sapce to explore and missions to do. Warriors 2 is also fun, especially with the random adventure system, though in that game unfortunately battles are all automatic, and I'd also recommend metroplexities, a cyberpunk style rpg game set in a distopian future. kingdom of loathing is good for comedy value, though unfortunately I've found the dayly adventure limit in that game a bit too strenuous, and while I enjoy the humour I don't find the story has me come back for more as much. I would also recommend looking at whitestick's online gamebooks page. these are interactive stories, but with full rpg mechanics, some requiring rolling of dice. In particular age of fable and those on the fighting fantasy project webiste are worth a look. hth. Hth. Beware the grue! Hey Dark, are there any other games like Sryth out there? I assume you know waht Sryth is...basically it's a browser based fantasy type game. Not quite an rpg, but sort of. Sryth is cool, don't get me wrong, but it gets rather, well, boring, and the whole melee rating and adventure token reliance is sort of putting me off from playing it anymore. I do like that genre of game though, but I don't know of many browser based fantasy games sadly, so thought I would ask here. Oh, and I hope your arm is doing better btw. *smile* On 4/13/13, James Bartlett wrote: > Hello Dark > > Thank u 4 all your input on this. I'll b shore 2 check out those > games. Hi Nicole, I can't think of anyy Hangman games that work with Jaws specifically, but Jim Kitchen has a free Hangman game that uses Sapi 5. Re: [Audyssey] Corporate VS IndependentDeveloperswasModeratorMessage
Hi Tom. well as I have said before, my spacial memorization is pretty cruddy, though i find a game like shades of doom playable with my usual landmarks method, still this is a point to considder. that being said, as you've pointed out yourself, there is currently no 3D game in audio, so it'd certainly be worth trying and it might be that a 3D system with sufficiently advanced navaids is more workable than it sounds, and even if it requires effort, as with the 2D fps games it might be that that effort is worth making. i'll also point out however, that a true! 2D game in audio is not beyond complexity either, indeed I think if a game with a propper 2D layout which took complete advantage of analogue jumps, a full second dimention and ledges positioned at many different distances above and below the player, the complexity factor would rise again. for example, in a true 2D game it would be necessary to include an indicator for the hight of possible reachable ledges which was variable according to jump distance. Even in something like prince of persia which only really had two possible layouts for jump distance, you'd still have to cope with ledges one or two levels above or below your character, and of course in a game like megaman or original monti there would be considderably more since your jump hight could cover a very large vertical distance which would require similar audio indicators. Re: [Audyssey] I'm sad: Chillingham.
Hi Shaun, Well, while it is true Microsoft will discontinue updates and support for XP next year I somehow think it won't go away immediately. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Corporate VS IndependentDeveloperswasModeratorMessage
Hi Dark, Hmm...I hadn't quite thought of it that way, but I do see your point. >From a purely exploration point of view 3d type games can be more frustrating and more complex because you now have six primary directions instead of four to deal with, and that in turn requires more complex controls and navigation aids. Moreover things that would be relatively easy in a 2d side-scroller now become more complicated just because of the added dimensions of the game world. For example, in a3d FPS game in order to pass through a door you have to center your character in the doorway and of course be facing the right direction. In an audio only game that is sometimes hard to do unless there is some sound queue such as wind or a beep that helps orient you to that doorway. Even then in games like Sarah I plow face first into a wall when I actually intended to walk through the door, and have to sidestep left or right to center myself so I can go through it. In a 2d side-scroller I wouldn't' have that problem because to walk through a doorway all I need to do is be walking in that direction. So 3d does have additional complications that could get in the way of game play. One thing I know for sure a lot of blind gamers have an underdeveloped sense of spatial orientation. Its not true for everyone, but it is common enough that I've heard complaints about games like Shades of Doom and Teraformers that they are too hard, too complicated, and that such and such person couldn't figure them out. This is a serious concern since both Shades of Doom and Teraformers are actually 2d FPS games and are only concerned with the north, south, east, and west cardinal directions. They lack an additional third axis of movement of climbing up and down on ladders, ropes, vines, and so forth. If they have difficulties with Shades of Doom, which I found to be very easy to navigate using the aids, I don't think they could ever hope to manage something more complex with rooms stacked above and below them as well as the regular north, south, east, and west directions. So from a purely exploration point of view 2d side-scrollers probably are better for the majority of blind gamers since it removes a lot of the visual complexity from the game as well as doesn't require a good sense of spatial orientation. Plus 2d side-scrollers are easier to adapt to audio since the audio requirements are much much simpler. All I have to do is use the 2d stereo pan control of the API to pan sounds left or right where as with a 3d FPS I need a more complicated virtual 3d audio API and a 5.1 surround sound setup to really do it justice. In the end as much as I hate to admit it you are right in saying that 2d games lend themselves to an instant engagement for the player and doesn't require much forethought about the controls, navigation aids, and interpreting the environment. All you have to worry about is using up arrow to climb up, down arrow to climb down, press left to go left, and press right to go right. Since it isn't as complicated the gamer can focus on the game and exploration more than in a 3d game. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Shaun, I know the feeling. I can't see paying double or triple for the same software just to run it on more than one computer. Cheers! [Audyssey] Anyone with a working version of Mushz, I'd like to ask a favor
Hi, apparrantly the mush z link on alteraeon.com is dead, and my copy of mushz got corrupted some how and I had to nix it. So, I don't have a working copy of the client or the plug ins, or the soundpack for alteraeon. Was wonering if someone could drop box or send space a copy of the programs to my email address. The copy of the mush z client I have still tells me that it has to access drop box for updates, and the soundpack and plug ins never stay loaded. I got it to voice once, and then it quit. Anyhow, hope someone can help me. Thanks Keith --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Lenron, Hmmm...The web setup should have worked. That's the one I would have recommended in fact since it will detect what components you were missing and installed only those components you needed. Re: [Audyssey] Hand-held devices.
Hi Nicole, As was mentioned on list the other day Franklin is still selling the Language Master, and it has gone down in price. So you may want to look around for the best price for it. As far as other handheld devices about the only other one I can think of is BopIt. I don't really have too many handheld games, and the only one I play once and a while is the BopIt game. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey Magazine Now Online
Hi Dennis, I don't think its necessary, but if you want to do that go ahead. For the moment I don't know where Ron is with issue 55, and since his personal life has been up in the air I don't know how often the magazine will get updated at this point. I have considered temporarily taking over the job as editor until he is able to return to that duty, but I'd have to discuss that with him off list. Obviously, I don't want to just do it without asking him first. Howeveer, the point I want to make is that I don't expect that page to change too much right away unless Ron or I begin cranking out new issues of the magazine. Cheers! [Audyssey] Other Game Suggestions was Unable to Run Rail Racer Demo
Hi Lenron, Not sure if you are interested in commercial or freeware games, but some of my favorites are Lone Wolf, GMA Tank Commander, and Shades of Doom by http://www.gmagames.com which are some of the best audio games ever built in my opinion.. In Lone Wolf you get to command a World War II submarine against the axis forces. The game comes with 17 missions, but there are well over 99 additional user created missions available for download. In Tank Commander you get to command a modern day tank as you liberate an island from an enemy force of tanks, helicopters, infantry carrying antitank weapons, etc. If you are into simulation games Tank Commander is one of the best. Shades of Doom is a decent clone of the classic game Doom. In Shades of Doom you are an agent sent to check up on a top secret experiment gone wrong. When you arrive you get trapped in the lab and must fight your way out by fighting or fleeing mutant humans, cyborgs, mutant dogs, giant rats, blobs, and various other experimental monsters. Your objective is to find the experiment control box and shut it down, and then make it to the roof and call for help. Some other commercial games you might want too look at are the arcade games produced by Draconis Entertainment. In particular Alien Outback, Dynaman, and ESP Pinball Extreme. Dynaman is a modern retake on the classic game Pac-man. In Dynaman you try to eat All the dots in the maze while being chaced by the evil Spark brothers, and occasionally run into hazards such as short circuits etc. Its a pretty cool game based on an old theme. Alien Outback is probably one of my favorite clones of the classic game Space Invaders. In Alien Outback its about this Australian dude in the Australian Outback who sees an alien invasion of earth, in progress and well decides to single handedly take them on. Unlike Space Invaders there is a lot more too it such as alien landers, multiple weapons, and several different types of ships. Its a great game for something in the classic arcade genre. Pinball Extreme is definitely the closest you come to an accessible pinball arcade for the blind. I believe it comes with 5 tables, but there is a party pack of extra tables you can buy for it which gives you more tables and games to play with. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] unable to run Rail Racer Demo on windows8
Hi Shaun, As I said there was a number of major changes made between 1.1 and 2.0. Those changes introduced compatibility issues between 1.x and 2.0 .NET applications. As it happens newer .NET Frameworks like 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 5.0 come with backward compatible libraries for .NET 2.0 and later but have no backward compatible libraries for 1.0 and 1.1. The .NET 1.x libraries are deprecated and so were removed from the .NET Framework and .NET developers are expected to update their code to reflect this change accordingly. However, in principle the .NET Framework is suppose to provide developers with a write once run anywhere solution by targeting the .NET Framework rather than any specific Windows platform. If You write a .NET 4.0 application on a Windows 7 system it should run fine on older systems running Windows XP and Vista that have .NET 4.0 installed, various mobile phones, and of course is forward compatible with Windows 8. While in principle that is suppose to be how it works I've encountered cases where it does not really work out that way. For example, 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility issues. By default .NET apps are compiled using the Any CPU flag. This usually works most of the time, but if you include 32-bit libraries in a .NET app and try to run it on a 64-bit OS it will crash. Same if you include a 64-bit library in a .NET app and try to run it on a 32-bit system. It will blow up big time. The solution for those sorts of problems is to specifically target the .NET platform such as x86 or x64 so that your .NET app will initialize the proper runtime environment and compatibility libraries rather than choose the default for the system. All I am saying is while Microsoft has tried to make .NET into a write once run everywhere solution sometimes things go wrong and it doesn't quite work out that way. Not all .NET apps are compatible with every version of the .NET Framework, and it is up to the developer to resolve those compatibility issues.. Most of the time compatibility issues are due to error on the .NET developers part such as using the Any CPU flag when x86 was required for compatibility reasons, or the app was built using some now deprecated library or API that was removed from the framework. Cheers! Hi. here's a new one from choiceofgames, a new gamebook adventure. These are quite accessible on the iPhone, and given the easy interface, I'd be surprised if they didn't work the same way on android too. Sadly, windows users are out of luck thanks to the chrome web store, (I tried to ask the devs about this since the demos and free versions of their games on the choiceofgames site are standard net pages, but I didn't get a response. still, for anyone with an Iphone I'd highly recommend this, indeed I'm playing choice of the star captain myself at the moment.
