[Audyssey] Just finished a game of King of dragon pass
I stuck King of dragon pass on on Wednesday night to see what the new updates were like, and then I couldn't stop playing and quite literally have been doing so for the last two days (dam that game is hard to put down!). The only slightly disappointing thing is I actually lost the game due to heroquests. With the way the new lore page is laid out every myth has a "details" link next to it. When however I got the details of a couple of myths, like the earth mother feeds the tribe, or the cow goddess's blessing (I won't attempt to spell there names), the "details" changed to secrets so I assumed that was how the quests were labeled. Unfortunately it turns out I was wrong. Lots of the other quests like the Healing goddess heals the scars don't have a "secrets" tag, they still read details even when I had the details of the myth. So I kept trying the Cow goddess's quest, failed three times and hus failed the short game! gr! I also confess I did cheat a little, by consulting the Kodp wiki on each quest to actually make sure what I was choosing were the best options, sinse one really irritating thing about attempting heroquests for the first time is that it's actually possible to choose the right option (ie the one from the myth), and still have the action fail, meaning often it seems you've done something wrong when actually you took the right action. I suppose I could restore to the point my tribe was formed, but that seems a bit too much like cheating, plus I'd rather try the thing myself again, particularly sinse I've now decided playing a thrawl taking clan is significantly more problematic than not, and also that it really! seems battle blessings are essential to winning any kind of battle at all early in the game. Re: [Audyssey] Just finished a game of King of dragon pass
Hey Dark, Yep dragon pass is really addicting, think i should start a new game too. The first blessings i try to get are those from the war god humakth and I always try to get a humakti on the ring. But then again i am also always a war clan, never tried peace or balanced for a prolonged time. I must admit that i often cheat if hqs go wrong, that really has a drastic impact on your clan. I should try a game the normal way. I have tried the HARD game a few times now but that is REALLY hard. And playing it for a long time, the first time i played kodp i played it once for 12 hrs on end. I think their game engine is available for purchase, would be cool to see more games like this. Re: [Audyssey] Just finished a game of King of dragon pass
Nice to see more of the same, but probably damnably awful! in terms of complexity. I do know what you mean about addictive, I really! find the game hard to put down once I start, indeed I only started because I wanted a look at the new updaes, then couldn't stop. I'd definitely suggest you give it a try, sinse there are a bunch of new scenes that have been added, some of them really interesting ones. You'll guarantee to see them as well sinse the developers made the new scenes more likely to turn up if your starting the new scenes more likely to appear if your upgrading from the old version. Humact is great and usually I always start with a temple to him. Indeed in my first game my tribal kin was a just plane awsome Humacti with leadership and combat both at renowned who also managed to complete two heroquests, fail at the humact quest but come back from limbo worshipping Orlanth. I also confess I have a soft spot for Humact sinse a good friend of mine does Live action roleplay in a system that uses the same pantheon of gods, and would always play humacti warriors, she's now a blackbelt in Karate and doing krav magar, so it's sort of appropriate for her :D. That being said, in the game I just finished my Humacti managed to get himself killed when off exploring and was replaced by a hard as nales lady who worshipped Venga and had renowned combat (which got to be heroic later on. I actually always wish I could build a full two blessing shrine to Venga, sinse both of her blessings are awsome. I personally prefer balanced to war, sinse when I tried a war clan I was really struggling with both trade and keeping my herds and crops going. This is why i tend to be a bbalanced clan player myself. Sorry dropped my keyboard and the message got sent by mistake :D. As I said, I don't tend to like restoring sinse not only do you have to play through the hole year again (quite a pain if you've failed a heroquest in storm season), but also I actually like the story element of this being a real clan where things can go wrong as well as right. It's sort of more fun. indeed even though my clan lost that last game, I still wish I could have a reccord of their saga (unfortunately my Iphone doesn't like my mail server so I can't setup E-mail on it). Hi, If i ever go into roleplaying I will certainly play a vinga worshipping badass woman. I am gong to try balanced next, that might be a bit of a challenge, i mostly start worshipping elmal because its a bit different then normal orlanthi, i do long games but at normal difficulty. I tend to get huge tracts of land but might now try with a bit less because you quickly tend to overgrow the comfortable clansize this way. Re: [Audyssey] Just finished a game of King of dragon pass
I've not tried a game where I didn't worship Orlanth, then again i've only played a few games seriously, ie, long enough to form a tribe. I usually start with the slightly more land option so that my clan has room to expand, but not so much it's easy for nasty neighbors to come and grab it. One thing the manual says is absolutely true, you can't win by slaughtering everyone sinse the object is to make peace. I therefore tend to try to resolve feuds as much as possible and make allies, but leave a couple of feuds going with especially hated rivals so that my weaponthanes have something to sharpen their swords on. Btw if you play a war clan what do you tend to find in terms of combat are the best tactics to go for? There is a table on the wiki but I didn't particularly get the point. I tend to find sacrificing before battle is pretty useless, charging works better when you outnumber the enemy, when things are roughly equal skirmish is best when attacking and maneuvers when defending, accept against horse spawn, and evade is best when your outnumbered. AlsoI'm not sure on the raid objectives, taking captives seems best when you outnumber the enemy but not to work otherwise, and survival is best when your outnumbered. When things are roughly equal drive them off or plunder works, I'm not really sure on burn homesteads or kill as many as possible objectives sinse I don't tend to use those much, after all they're pretty scummy ways to fight :D. [Audyssey] star traders was: Re: Just finished a game of King of dragon pass
I've played star traders elite quite seriously (indeed i had a major game of it the other day). The problem at the moment is there is still one screen, the planet navigator that is missing some pretty major information on the various planets. At the moment it's quite possible to fly around, do contracts, do all the fighting, buy upgrades etc, but you can't for example decide you need to get more reputation with one faction and fly off to their nearest planet to make peace, or take several contracts on close buy planets sinse there is no way of telling from the navigator how far or near planets are or in what direction. I know though the access fixes aren't quite finished and indeed sinse a new version was released for android quite recently I'm hoping the new Ios version will appear any day now with those fixes, indeed I've mailed the developer to see how things are going. When things are fixed and it's possible to play a strategic game, I might well reccord a podcast as I did for s5 about star traders. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called a braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and start playing live against a human. To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the board and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one from in your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell braille cards, dice etc. Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible to hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I want to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square it will move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent my disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that move will be a bad or good one. This is why I've never got on with the various audio Chess games like BGChess challenge, Kchess elite etc. Sinse while they have some good audio overviews for the board, fundamentally you are still just getting the information square by square, and I don't find myself able to old enough spacial information about the board in mind for that sort of overview to really help me or make it possible for me to play chess. Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land mark memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be different though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar position, hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Well the Hadley School for the Blind offers two free chess courses, Chess for Beginners and Chess: Principles and Strategies. You even get a free chess set with the first course which is yours to keep after you complete it. Each course has I believe six lessons, each with an accompanying assignment. I agreeDark. Tat's wy I don't play onlie, even though you can get a free year of membership to an online Chess community for completing both of the two Ches courses offered by the Hadley School here in the US. Their chess set, which is included with their beginner's course, is really nice. It not only has the pegs and holes for easy piece placement and the pins denoting white and black pieces (in this case I believe it's the black ones), but the board is also brailled. The white side says wite and the other black, but the ranks and files are also denoted with letters and numbers. To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the board and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has pins on the top to tell them apart. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
that sounds like a really good chess set bryan. Sinse the old one I used to own pretty much died due to lack of use (several peaces depegged), I tried buying a new one from the Rnib however i was quite disappointed. The peaces are tiny, however instead of black and white it's more like dark brown and slightly lighter brown (the contrast is quite horrible), and the peaces are extremely small and lumpy. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
There was a step by step guide to the alter quest on the audiogames.net forum i remember, sinse that's the only way I managed it myself, particularly sinse while I'm used to speaking and talking about moves on the board, eg e2/e4, the notation code used for commands I found rather whacky. I tried that charlse with K chess elite, however I think I must have misscounted moving one of my opponent's peaces sinse each game I tried I'd get a ways through and then the computer would tell me to move something I thought was an empty square or the like. Although it is pricy, you can get a very well made tactual chess set from www.thechesshouse.com The pieces are tournament sized. I believe the set costs around $100. --- Be positive! It's always a good idea to double check by using your arrow keys to review the board in cases like this. You can sometimes hear b7 when it actually said d7 or e7. Another very good chess program that is speech friendly is Shredder Chess. You can get it from www.shredderchess.com and you can also get it for an iDevice as well. Do a search in the app store. If you get it for an iDevice, you can get it for your PC for a discount price. I haven't found out what the cost is, but will do so next month. --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] old games site found.
I agree, to a point. No doubt you already know that because I've sent messages along similar lines before. Generally I jump on the bandwagon when it's a technical term or some other thing that could misrepresent us as a player base to the mainstream gaming community, (the never-ending battle to get people writing CAPTCHA properly being one recent example). But when the majority of someone's messages over a period of several months are one or two lines long, and seem only to criticise or insist on clarity to the point where it appears that person isn't willing to investigate a single thing that hasn't been handed to them on a plate, I do start to wonder whether our old buddy Mr Initiative is stuck in cyber traffic. Yet somehow, that seems unlikely, because the grammar police usually manage to make it to the scene of the crime right on time don't they. To give you an example of how this comes across, I could've replied to your last message as follows: "What is knit picking? I was referring to nitpicking. Check the difference in spelling. Thanks." It wouldn't have gotten anybody any closer to enjoying games, so I chose not to. Follow what I'm saying? Let one go once in a while man, it frees up a few extra seconds for gaming. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Keith, There's two forms of notation. Algebraic notation is easier to fathom. In algebraic the files are lettered a through h from White's queen's rook right to white's King's rook. The ranks are then numbered from 1 to 8 counting from white's first rank. So a move of pawn e2-e4 is king's pawn from 2 to 4. As to playing, there are, or were several board game producers for the blind producing peg style chessboards for the blind that used alternating raised and depressed squares to represent the color, and that had pins or bumps on the black pieces to distinguish them from the white. I have such a board and it works well as you can look at board position without messing up the pieces. I hope this helps, Jeremy --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] alter aeon underground chess tournament
The underground chess tournament is a really old area on Alter Aeon. The moves are set up using very old door opening code to make things happen. It's a relic from a more primitive age of building. If the audiogames.net walk through no longer exists for some reason, anyone who is interested can contact me off list and I can provide a walk through, assuming mine's still accurate. I know some changes were recently made to that area to help deal with some of the whacky syntax etc, but revamping the area would be tricky. When I completed the deed myself, I was actually talking to the original builder Islaine. She had me play through all the chess problems on a board. Took me about 3 and a half hours one morning. However, it was something of a rush. Jeremy --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Hi Charles, I was happy to hear that the PC versoin of Shredder is speech-friendly. The only issue is that I'm not sure what you meant byh that. I get no feedback on moved pieces, and I see no way to look at the board. What needs to h appen to make that work? You can sometimes hear b7 when it actually said d7 or e7. Another very good chess program that is speech friendly is Shredder Chess. You can get it from www.shredderchess.com and you can also get it for an iDevice as well. Do a search in the app store. If you get it for an iDevice, you can get it for your PC for a discount price. I haven't found out what the cost is, but will do so next month. --- Be positive! If I actually played more chess I'd rather considder that, assuming that that particular company do orders outside the states. Though I don't tend to play that much chess now. Beware the grue!
