Hello thanks for this the reason is when I am on mush and that is the sight
impaired version it keeps kicking me out so I have to restart the client

I'm not sure what you mean.

There is the materiamagica mud, but even if someone did do a video demo or 
something on youtube obviously you couldn't read the text of the mud coming 
in so how helpful the info would be I don't know.

Hi Wayne.
There are no specific guides to interactive fiction for blind/vi users,
however there are several general if guides, and sinse If is inherently
accessible anyway as all your doing is reading on screen text and
responding, that shouldn't be a problem.

In terms of software, all you need is an interpreter and the game files. 
Interactive fiction games are like music files and you play them in an
interpreter program just like you'd use Winamp, Windows media player,
itunes, Vlc player or whatever to play your music files.

For what interpreter you need, that depends firstly on what format of game
your looking at playing, and secondly what screen reader you have. some
people find the Filfre interpreter helpful, (I don't have the address on me
but there is a page for it on audiogmaes.net), which can run Zcode or Glulks
format games, I personally prefer win frotz and win glulks as I said, again,
all of these have audiogames.net database entries so go and check there for
more information.

Once you have the file and the interpreter, it's just a question of reading
the text and responding with what you type into the interpreter. interactive
fiction are basically interactive stories that repsond to commands in
truncated sentences, so the commands are realtively easy, stuff like get
sword, light lantern, directions such as north and south etc.

For a general guide see

The site is a little dated but it explains all about what interactive
fiction is, and how to play it, though as I said for interpreters you
probably will want to investigate some alternatives.

Probably depends upon your screen reader.

I find I prefer winglulx with supernova for the same reason I prefer Win
Frotz, sinse the screen is far less cluttered than filfre, and it has the
sapi option for auto reading of incoming text, but I know Filfre has been
popular with jaws users, so it probably depends upon what screen reader your
using.

Still, nice there are alternatives.

There is a way to set mush to automatically open a world on startup, but I
don't use mush regularly and I'm not currently near my windows machine to
figure it out and post instructions.  Next time I fire it up I'll try to

Hello Thomas sorry for this message on this thread but I am running
win 7 pro on a vm fusion but when I try and turn using the ctrl and left or
right arrows it seems not to work do you know if this is a bug in the 64 bit

Yes, the night scope or whatever that thing is called will help, but if
Lindsay is running Shades on a newer PC running Windows 7 or Windows 8 that
would explain it. DirectSound 8 is really screwed up on Windows 7/8 and as a
result when trying to center the mutant humans, dogs, blobs, etc you will
think they are centered and end up blowing holes in the walls or surrounding
equipment because DirectSound no longer correctly positions audio correctly
in older games like Shades of Doom, Tank Commander, etc. The only solution
is to get good at the pitch changes in the night scope etc to target enemies
because relying on the sounds being centered won't work any more
unfortunately.

He's obviously been to the island if he's asking about the compass. But the
lake is in the jungle outside the east gate of that little settlement.
You'll have to kill a huge snake in order to enter it and yes, you'll want a
water breathing potion on hand in order to survive underwater, otherwise
you'll take damage fairly rapidly.

Personally I just use Vip mud and would recommend it, sinse it is very
simple to setup (indeed you pretty much just need to install it and  adjust
the speech to your liking),  no setup no fuss, and it has some helpful
functions such as being able to find words on the  entry window and
separating input history.

Though it is a  commercial program there  actually aren't many  bennifits to
buying it, just removal of the two hour time limit before it cuts out (and
you can always just reconnect instantly), and addition of msp sound support.

You can still create soundpaks and play sound, just not use the msp function
from muds without buying Vip, and to be honest I only  know one mud,
materiamagica that uses a lot of msp anyway.

[Audyssey] cyberassault

Motown so can some kind person tell me a good quest to start on I made the
mistake of taken a quest in croc bar with the street tough but that has not

It does, but you'll need to follow the installation instructions on the
website and that are displayed in an edit box during the installation of the
MTScripts in order for it to go off problem free. There are a couple of
requirements related to where it needs to be installed and you need the
visual c++2005 redistributable, which you most likely already have. 
It should be fine, I'm running on 8.1, have been for a couple months now.

Hi leo when you open mush do alt f and look for new world enter on
that and at the top type cyberassault and then the port number 1 then
tab to the next field which I think is address and type www.cyberassault.org
and then hit ok then type new and that should bring up where to start your
creating your new char hope this helps

There is a difference between mushclient and mush-z. Mushclient is a program
that you can use to play any mud. Mush-z is a specific set of triggers,
aliases and sounds that have been built for alter aeon, and come
pre-packaged when you instal the program. Think of it sort of like getting
programs pre-installed on a new computer; mushclient is the computer and
mushh-z is the software. You can, of course, add more software to that
computer, if you're willing to work on it. Same goes for mushclient.

Wayne,  Mush-Z is designed for Alter Aeon, not Cyber Assault.  Use

Hello list I have just started playing cyberassault so can anybody
please help me I started on the beach and found the cache of clothes and
then found high point but the hints mention a place called Motown but I cant
travel to far because I am unarmed apart from a switch blade so how can I

In short, little and none. In more detail: there are a few areas in which
you can pk, and a few ways to accidentally blow up other players. I have
seen maybe five situations in which people actually pk'ed. The atmosphere of
the game is really relaxed, and there's not an awful lot of competition;
we'd all rather work together to save the world than kill each other in
petty conflicts. On my first day, within half an hour or so of loggin in, I
had a player give me enough cash to start buying equipment, and be able to
outfit my character.
If you want to rollplay you can (and some areas are really cool if
you do a little) but there's no rollplaying theme.

also, perhaps look in to mouse control, or joistick / gamepad controll. as a
keyboard just does not suit for this sort of thing to be completely honest.
it would work, but you simply have way more control with a mouse or gamepad.
or what would be even way better then that, steering wheel support.
that would be totally awesome!

Finding the help manual for a particular mud client singularly unhelpful
because it wasn't written for the rank beginner but for those who are
techies. I find the help manual for my mud client quite confusing for this
reason. It does not explain satisfactorily: 1. What is a key and why one
uses one; 2. What is a class in mudding and why one uses it; 3.
What is a trigger and why one uses it; 4. What are variables for and how do
you know how to set them; 5. What are the various paths (sound, log,
default, etc.) for and what is their function and use; 6. Doesn't show one
how to mud without using scripts or if it is required for one to use
scripts, what they are for and why one might want to use them when mudding;
7. How to know what little things mess one up while mudding and how to get
rid of irritating occurrences; 8. What hot keys are and how to make them; 9.
How to know which manner is best for a blind mudder to add for enjoyable
playing experiences and how to integrate text, sound, or anything else athat
leaves one fully satisfied rather than completely frustrated. Are their any
takers? Any conversing what also be helpful because manuals tend to send me
into a soporific state, but I think if said book were written in a fun and
lively manner, I'd probably read it it if it was addressed for my needs.

the proverbial broken record, but I really am having an awfully frustrating

Hello everyone,

As much as I hate being a Nazi about the list rules and guidelines
certain posts have forced me to conclude that the guidelines need to
be amended to insure the accuracy and validity of some of the things
that get posted to the list. Certain members, for whatever reason,
continuously post false and misleading information that could be
accepted by a list member who may not know any better and thus that
information could become harmful and detrimental to the reader.
Therefore I am proposing the following guideline to be added to the
rules which we may modify and discuss before it becomes official.

"Because we get new members who may or may not know about the subjects
posted to the list, and this also may include longtime members who
just don't know what is and is not correct, it is very important that
you, if at all possible, research to verify that what you are about to
post is correct information.  Incorrect information or advice on how
to fix a computer or game issue can cause damage to a list member's
computer or corrupt a game, which can cost that member money and or
headaches unnecessarily.  If a list member habitually posts obviously
faulty information due to a lack of research, they will receive a
warning.  Continuing the practice may result in a removal from the
list.  This guideline is to insure that list members do get the
correct advice or help they need, and they will also know that what
they read is from a reliable source."

Any last minute thoughts, suggestions, or comments before I add this
to the official list rules and guidelines?

Wayne,

Alter Aeon runs all the time and can't be shut off.  The game saves itself,
and when you log off your character it's automatically saved.
You don't need to save manually, because the game always takes care of it
for you.

I'm not sure exactly what item you're talking about (it's been a while since
I've been there), but you could try one of a few things. In order to pick up
a binding item you need to know one of it's names. For example, ">get whip
ped" instead of ">get all ped". If you can't guess one of the names of the
object (andd there should be a few obvious ones, seeing as it's in the
newbie zone), then try emptying the container, and see if the item's ground
string (type look once it's emptied) gives you some extra hints.

Hi, I have the VIP Mud client and would like to know how to configure it
better for playing RPGs. Right now it's set to "default path". It also has a
sound path and a logs path. What precisely do those paths mean?
For me, since I'm really geographically challenged, I'm wondering if a
combination of sound and speech would work for me. I also find it hard
because I've never scripted anything in my life (and don't particularly want
to). I also wish I could find a way so my screen reader would tell me how
names are spelled. I say this because I can't seem to use the typical
reading commands. I'm wondering also if my view is wrong. I'll probably have
to check it. I would really like to do role-playing, but find it exceedingly
frustrating because I'm the newbie player. The help files tend not to be as
helpful as I'd like and also, it seems I'm asked to do acts which are
nonsensical (depending on the game). I come from a reading, movie-observing,
TV-observing, and play-listening background.
What galls me is the difference between what the game could be for me and my
frustration in not getting there, i.e.,  advancing . I also understand that
VIP MUD isn't the only mud client out there, but which ones are easy to use
if you're a non-techno-savvy blind person. I truly wish there were manuals
and tutorials for people like me who need stuff in excruciating detail where
I can understand the sense of commands, etc. I also suppose the speed is
such that I'm not getting the information I want at the time and how can I
get rid of those percentage signs? Okay, I know this might be considered a
rant, but it's based on my feeling of going round in circles when I attempt
to do some mudding. Right now, the only satisfactory thing I'm doing
approaching the RPG experience is being a member of a blind gamers group
using the D&D setting meeting on Sunday evenings. I'm also wondering if it
wouldn't be helpful to have rpg buddies. So question 1: which paths are most
useful to you who role play? Question 2: Do you find it helpful to role play
at the same time as other people in the beginning? 3. When you talk to
people, do you find their answers helpful? 4. Is there an RPG where it is
satisfactory on every level and isn't simply the hack-and-slash sort? I'd
love to be better at role-playing the Iron Realms games because their
backgrounds and mythoses are great and they seem sensible to me, but are
they all completely free to play or are there things one has to pay for? So
there you have it. If anyone would like to write me off list, I'd really
like serious conversations on this topic because the learning curve for
mudding is high and I could really use the help surmounting the curve, so to

Hi Wayne,

The problem has to do with Jim Kitchen's installers. They install games to
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc when they are suppose to go in c:\Program files
x86\Kitchensinc on a 64-bit operating system. If you go to c:\Program
Files\Kitchensinc and move all the files to c:\Program Files x86\Kitchensinc
they will show up in the Kitchen's Inc game menu.

Hello I don't know about win7 32bit but I have win7 64 bit and have
downloaded winkit but when I go and download more games they don't show up
in the kitchen sink folder so I have not been able to play any games so any
help would be great

I think I have the 17 Lone Wolf missions, the 9 or 10 floors of Shades Of
Doom, and the 6 sectors of GMA Tank Commander.  Maybe a few others, too, but
don't recall at the moment.
