2012-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Simon,

I understand your feelings, but I'm only the messenger here. I didn't
make the laws. :D

As far as the license agreement goes unless someone changed the
installer you did get the end user license. When you run the Realspeak
setup on the second screen you get a license agreement to accept or
not. You have to accept it to continue. If you didn't get this screen
then you must have a modified installer. If you checked the "I Agree"
checkbox to continue then you legally agreed to be bound by the
license. Checking that checkbox is the same as signing it.

Cheers!

Hi Simon,

Yes, its absolutely software piracy. It makes no difference if Nuance,
Freedom Scientific, etc makes it available or not. The law is the law.

It amazes me how many people fail to understand copyright law. It is
all rapped up in that end user license agreement you get with your
software product. If it says you are not to resell, share, or
redistribute the software with a third-party that is exactly what it
means. If the company decides to stop selling the product it does not
suddenly make it legal to share the software with a third-party. The
end user license agreement is still legally enforcible in the United
States, Canida, United Kingdom, and wherever else the software was
sold. I would agree with many that this sucks, is often unfair, but
that is the way copyright law works.

Believe me when I say I'm not a fan of copyright law. If I legally
could I'd give the software away too. However, as our list attempts to
keep everything on the up and up I can not legally just pass on the
voices to anyone who wants a copy.

Cheers!

Hi everyone,

I thought I would just send you a quick message on a very interesting
development that will effect Windows 7 64-bit users. As many of you
know the copy of the Sapi 5 compatible Realspeak voices that shipped
with Jaws 8, 9, and 10 will not install on Windows 7. The issue is
that Freedom Scientific set a launch condition in the setup installer
to fail if running a 64-bit computer, but the voices themselves work
fine on Windows 7 if you get passed that error message. So what I've
done is built a new Microsoft Setup Installer for the voices,
installed them on a 64-bit computer, and am able to use them with NVDA
as well as Jim Kitchens games. So the good news is it is possible to
use the Sapi 5 compatible version of Tom, Caren, Lee, Daniel, Emily,
etc on Windows 7. The bad news is redistributing my setup installer
would be technically illegal so I can't just casually redistribute my
copy.

What I'm thinking of doing here is creating a patch so you could copy
your Realspeak disc to your computer, copy my patch over to the setup
installer, and run it to install the voices on your system. This would
legally cover my backside as I wouldn't redistribute the cab file with
the voice data but only the *.msi file which launches the setup. I was
wondering how many people would be interested in this patch so they
could continue to use the Scansoft Realspeak voices on more modern
Windows machines for games, screen readers, etc?

Cheers!

As I have said before the only way to get the full Sapi 5 Realspeak
voices is off the disc that shipped with Openbook 8, Jaws, 8 or, Jaws
9.If you do not have that disc I can't just give you the voices. All
I'm going to be giving people is a patch to fix the installer so they

Hi Jacob,

Right, it should work with Jaws, but I haven't tried them with a
64-bit copy of Jaws. There may be some technical issues using a 64-bit
program like Jaws with a 32-bit voice. So far I've tried them with
NVDA, Jim Kitchen's games, and Textaloud and they work O.K. However, I
have no way of knowing if Jaws and other programs will work equally
well unless I test them.

Hi Ron,

That's not what I said. What I said is that the older version of the
Realspeak voices are full Sapi 5 voices that will work with Jaws, NVDA,
Openbook, games, Textaloud, etc. The newer Realspeak voices available on the
Freedom Scientific site only work with Jaws, Openbook, and Magic. That's the

2012-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Simon,

I know, but I don't think Freedom Scientific had much choice in the
matter. Nuance, the company that owns the Realspeak voices, has
changed the end user license on those voices, and I believe Freedom
Scientific had to tie it to their products per the new license
agreement the same way Nextup ties their Realspeak voices to
Textaloud, Weatheraloud, and Newsaloud.

Cheers!

Hi Shaun,

Same here. Most of the time when I use Sapi voices it is for games
like Entombed. When I got my Toshiba I was furious that the Realspeak
voices wouldn't install because when I play Entombed I like having
Realspeak Daniel. Using Microsoft Anna with Entombed just don't do it
for me.

Same could be said for a lot of Jim Kitchens games. Realspeak Tom
makes a good announcer for Baseball and Football and I quit playing
both on my laptop because I absolutely could not, would not, use Anna.
So I decided to make the Realspeak voices work. :D

Cheers!

Hi Jacob,

I know. Freedom Scientific created a special launch condition in their
setup installer to prevent the voices from being installed on a 64-bit
computer. I don't know why because once I built a new installer and
installed them the voices work fine. You have to configure them via
the 32-bit control panel if you want to use them, but that is no big
deal. I've got Realspeak Tom working with NVDA on a 64-bit system
without issue now.

Hi Ben,

Sorry, I can't help you there. The only way I can legally do this is
if you actually own the Realspeak software disc that shipped with your
Freedom Scientific product such as Openbook 8, Jaws 8, Jaws 9, etc. If
you don't own the disc or threw it away I can't just zip up the
patched disc and voices and give them to you as that would be software
piracy. The best I can do is upload a little patch that fixes the
Realspeak software installer to allow them to run on 64-bit Windows
for people who own the original software media. My goal here isn't to
pirate the software, but simply fix the setup so people can use them
on new laptop and desktop machines running Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Cheers!

Hi tom.
thats really cool news.
I aquired the files from a friend, and I am sure happy I have them
though sadly my friend's system died, and he lost the origional cds
with the files on them so if I lose them thats it.

I would be interested for a patch though for 64 bit.
For one thing, even though I would eventually buy actual voices ivona
or something the fact is the only time I use sapi at all its for gaming.
I have tried using highquality synths on this 32 bit unit and there
are major delays and mispronounciations in the voices.

Even so to at least be able to play games would really rock.

[Audyssey] Scansoft Realspeak Voices and 64-bit Windows

2012-07-17 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!
